keep your back straight and
imagine the top of your head
lifting up toward the ceiling.
Inhale and twist your upper
body and midsection to the left,
reaching your right arm across
your body to grip the back of
the chair. Let your left arm relax.
Breathe deeply and relax your
back muscles; deepen the twist
if you can. Hold for 10 deep
breaths; repeat on the other side.
Stand facing the side of a sturdy
stationary chair. Place your right
foot flat on the seat of the chair
and walk your left foot back so
that you're in a lunge position.
Keeping your chest upright,
bend your left knee to lower it
toward the ground. Gently push
your hips forward and feel the
stretch in your left hip. Hold for
10 deep breaths and repeat
on the other side.
Sit near the edge of your chair
and interlace your fingers
behind you, with your palms
facing your back. Lean forward
until you can lift your arms and
rest them on the back of the
chair. (If you can't reach the top
of the chair, just grip the sides
of the chair back.) Inhale into
the stretch; exhale as you
relax your shoulders. Hold for
10 deep breaths.
Stand with both palms placed
flat in front of you on a flat
surface, such as your desk or a
table. Now inverse your hands so
that your fingertips are pointing
toward you; your thumbs should
be facing out and pinkies facing
in. Keep your palms in contact
with the surface and spread your
fingers wide to stretch
keyboard-tense muscles. Hold
for 10 deep breaths.
Sit near the edge of your
chair; lift your right leg and
cross it over the left so that
your right ankle is resting on
top of your left knee. Sit tall and
straight, feeling the stretch in
your right glute and hip. Hold
for 10 deep breaths and repeat
on the other side.

Sticking to a New Year’s resolution is an exercise in self-control — but who’s to say that falling off the wagon has to be a
bad thing? If you’re going to abandon your mission, we recommend making better “bad choices.” To help, we’ve collected
some indulgent recipes from local hotspots. As for staying on the straight and narrow? There’s always next year.

Panna Cotta Ingredients
1 c sugar
1 tbsp gelatin
1 c milk
3 ½ c cream
salt
lemon juice
Brittle Ingredients
1 c sugar
½ c corn syrup
¼ c water
½ c cooked, chopped bacon
½ c roasted peanuts
2 tbsp softened butter
1 tbsp baking soda
Garnish
1 banana
sugar
chocolate sauce
whipped cream
To make the panna cotta, caramelize sugar over medium heat until dark brown. In a
separate bowl, sprinkle gelatin into milk and let soften. When sugar is caramelized, carefully
pour in cream; stir to dissolve. Heat milk over low heat to dissolve gelatin; when heated, stir
the milk into the cream mixture. Add a pinch of salt and lemon juice to taste; pour into eight
5-ounce cups and refrigerate 4 hours until set.
To make the brittle, heat sugar, corn syrup, and water to 300 degrees. Stir in cooked,
chopped bacon, roasted peanuts, softened butter, and baking soda. Spread on a silicone
mat or on a baking tray brushed with vegetable oil and let harden.
For garnish, slice a banana; sprinkle slices with sugar and brûlée under a broiler. To serve,
top the panna cotta with chocolate sauce (Bothen recommends Hershey’s Special Dark),
whipped cream, brûléed banana slices, and chunks of peanut brittle.
Switchel Ingredients
4 ¼ c water
1 ¾ c apple cider vinegar
1 ¼ c maple syrup
2 tbsp fresh ginger
Cocktail Ingredients
ice
1 oz Cruzan Blackstrap rum
2 oz switchel
soda water
To make the switchel, combine water, apple cider
vinegar, maple syrup, and fresh ginger, peeled and
finely chopped. Mix all ingredients in a container
and cover; let sit for at least one day and strain
before using.
To make the cocktail, add ice to a large rocks or
highball glass. Pour in Cruzan Blackstrap rum and
switchel; top with soda water or sparkling water.
Garnish with lemon peel and candied ginger.

Q: How do these buildings fit the ideal of modern living?
A: Because there are a lot of different lifestyles in a city, we
designed a range of apartment types — some bedrooms
are inboard, some have lots of windows. The gardens
on the roof can be used to grow vegetables and herbs;
there’s also a cinema screening room and a fitness center.
There is a good package of amenities, so the buildings can
accommodate a lot of different types of living.
The newest buildings shaping the skyline
in the North End of Shaw are the
residential properties at Atlantic Plumbing
and 2030 8th Street, both of which bear
the signature architectural flourishes of
New York-based architect Morris Adjmi.
Known for Brooklyn’s Wythe Hotel and
the 837 Washington building near the
High Line, Adjmi brings a deep reverence
for history and neighborhood identity to
his work. We caught up with him to discuss
his creative process and what makes his
new D.C. projects so exciting.
Q: How is Atlantic Plumbing different from your other
projects to date?
A: The project was very different, besides just being our first
in Washington D.C. To begin, the neighborhood around
Atlantic Plumbing has historic elements, but it is not
technically in a historic district. In some ways, this allowed
more freedom than we usually encounter working with
historic sites that are in landmarked districts. As a
result, we had more liberty with the design language for
the new buildings.
Q: What kind of role do you think the development will play
in the evolution of the neighborhood?
A: The neighborhood is in the midst of a transition. A number
of surrounding sites will be developed in the coming years,
including another phase of the Atlantic Plumbing project
that we are currently working on. AP’s introduction of new
retail and residences to the area will serve as a backdrop for
this anticipated change. Additionally, the subsidized artist
workspace on site will hopefully stimulate new creative
activities and encourage more visitors to the area.
The next phase of the project includes a semi-private street
that will provide a new outdoor gathering space for the
neighborhood. We hope that all of these programs at
AP will act as a catalyst for change — like the Wythe
Hotel was in Williamsburg or the Theory Building was in
Manhattan’s Meatpacking District — to bring new energy
to the neighborhood.
Q: What do you hope tenants will appreciate/enjoy most
about living at Atlantic Plumbing?
A: Both buildings have the advantage of enormous
windows without the ‘glass box’ aesthetic that normally
accompanies buildings with this much glazing. Residents
will hopefully enjoy the tremendous amount of natural light
within the apartments, as well as the distinctive design of
the buildings’ exteriors.
The buildings also have generous amenity spaces, including
the planted roof deck gardens. These outdoor spaces are
unique to what is typically available in D.C. apartment
buildings and include amazing views of the city.

Q: Can you talk a bit about your process as you approach a
historic area with new construction?
A: Typically we begin our design process by looking at
the project’s neighborhood and history. Our designs
aim to be compatible with the area’s historic fabric and
character, but not by copying the past. The buildings
reinterpret historic, architectural language in a form
relevant to contemporary needs and technologies.

Another new experience was designing two buildings that
are across the street from each other. Our goal was to
create a dialogue between the two buildings, and between
the buildings and the neighborhood. We did that with an
industrial aesthetic for each building that acknowledges
the area’s history. On the larger building, we have the large
x-bracing, which is a structural element but it also gives
the building a sense of scale. On the smaller building,
there’s the brick pattern, which breaks up the slick, glasscube look and references all the brick buildings in the area.
We wanted each building to have a strong identity, but also
fit within the neighborhood.
