Charlie Boxer/Terrier Age: 10 weeks Charlie was rescued from a southern shelter at this very tender age. Even a puppy this young is at risk of being euthanized in crowded shelters without no-kill policies. 26 | winter 2010 | www.cesarsway.com T hese are the faces that can melt hearts of stone: shelter dogs who want nothing more than to find a home and someone to love. But they have had one lucky break. All of these impossibly cute pups have been rescued by North Shore Animal League America, headquartered in Port Washington, New York. The league is the largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization in the world, saving 20,000 abandoned pets every year and helping them find loving homes. Since it was founded in 1944, the league has managed to place almost 1 million dogs and cats of all ages. Its sprawling Long Island campus, located 20 miles from New York City, has its own veterinary center, which provides 24-hour care—in addition to treating 10,000 animals a year on an outpatient basis, performing free neutering or spaying on all animals that are adopted, and offering educational and vaccination programs. Rotti-Lab Mixes Age: 6 weeks old We couldn’t believe our ears! Marley and Harley were born at North Shore. Their mother, Leila, was rescued from a local municipal shelter where pregnant dogs often face euthanasia. Mom is also waiting to be adopted. Diana Staffordshire Bull Terrier/Welsh Corgi Age: 2 years Unique and charming Diana was rescued from a local municipal shelter. Her sweet looks tell her story: She has a wonderful disposition and is a young lady with a touch of tomboy who loves to chase after a ball. Their beagle mom was rescued from a house along with three other pregnant females and a dozen other beagle mixes. He’ll be placed in a home that will give this sweet boy the life he deserves. Beautiful little Gracie is your typical Labrador mix; like all Labs, she is peopleoriented and is always ready for a good long walk or a day of vigorous activity. This is the ideal breed for adopters who enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle. He would enjoy life in an active household, where he might have a “job” like retrieving objects or running an agility course. Sully came to the Animal League from an overcrowded municipal shelter.
