and their Pups - North Shore Animal League America
Moms and their Pups Sierra Yellow Lab mix At the North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, NY, the dogs in need sometimes have a family. Lost, abused, cast away, they look at us as if to say, “Just give me a home. You do that, and I’ll handle the rest.” Photographs by Michael Brian 28 | march 2010 | www.cesarsway.com Sierra was already a mother when North Shore rescued her from a Georgia shelter. Many municipal shelters euthanize newborn puppies because they can’t handle them— but that won’t happen to Sierra’s babies. Catalina Shepherd mix It’s colder up north than it is at the Southern shelter where Catalina gave birth to her five puppies (pictured here at eight weeks of age). But they no longer face the threat of being put to sleep—they just need happy, loving homes. 000 | winter 2010 | www.cesarsway.com PHOTO CREDIT TK www.cesarsway.com | march 2010 | 31 RIO Dogo Argentino mix On Christmas Eve animal control officers in New Jersey got a call: A family had found a large white dog under their porch, and she appeared to be pregnant. Taken to a local municipal shelter, Rio gave birth to 10 little miracles that very night! 000 | winter 2010 | www.cesarsway.com PHOTO CREDIT TK www.cesarsway.com | winter 2010 | 000 SNICKERDOODLE Bassett-corgi mix Rescued from an overcrowded shelter in Virginia, Snickerdoodle was pregnant when North Shore took her in. Like many of the newborns at North Shore, their future is much brighter than if they’d stayed in the municipal shelter Dimples came from. “I just have to be firm with him,” says Eva, out for a jog with Hugo. “I just have to be firm with him,” says Eva, out for a jog with Hugo.
