Double Dobies
Our Double
Your Money deal
will come in handy
since many of our
dogs come in pairs
or groups like the
double Dobermans
from the shelter in
Big Spring. One was heartworm positive,
and the owner refused to treat the dog.
Local vet Dr. Daniel Holt liked the dog
so much that he agreed to treat Reba for
free if we would take her! Now Flex and
Reba are waiting for you.
New Beds for All
Mr. and Mrs. Jarrett arrived at our
Adoption Center one day with a truck
load of doggie beds. In fact, they bought
new beds for every one of our dogs to
keep them cozy and warm through the
winter.
Torti Point Princess
Susie, the Siamese cat, was staying at
Dr. Allen Bolt’s clinic after her owner
had a stroke. When the owner passed
away, Susie came to us. With a great
personality and natural beauty, Susie
was soon on the way to a new home
thanks to the gang at PetSmart.
Brazilian Sloth Cat
A slow moving ball of hair was
creeping down the road. The man who
spotted it (Jack Hanna?) was certain he
was seeing a Sloth in the Brazilian
Rainforest. Looking closer he discovered
the slowest moving Persian cat on the
planet. We call her Maderia, but she might
be very happy just hanging quietly in a
tree all day.
Secret Mom Has Puppies
Freedom, a skinny little Shih Tuz, was
very bedraggled at the Abilene Animal
Shelter. We brought her to our Adoption
Center and just a week later she had 5
puppies! Despite the surprise birth, we
were overjoyed when
we saw how
beautiful the
little tykes
were.
Mom
and 6 Please
Just as our Shih Tzu
puppies arrived, we received
a mom and 6 Dachshund
puppies! After a few weeks
(and lots of poop), all have
been adopted.
Cline Shale Rush!
The future is oil! Hearing
that, the young cat headed off to
find her fortune and ended up at
the United Oil and Grease yard
dodging big trucks! Renee Fitch
brought her to us, and Sepia has
been adopted by a huge oil
company we can’t name just yet.
Popper or Bouncer?
Rescued from a home where a small
child was very rough with him, Popper
has trouble walking. Dr. Allen Bolt
examined the kitten and suspects brain
damage. However, Popper is
doing fine in his new home and is
improving. In many cases, that cute
kitten or puppy should NOT go to a
home with tiny children.
....Till April 30, 2013. Give $20 and we get $40! Give $500 and we get $1,000!
An anonymous donor has pledged to match every dollar given to Rescue the Animals, SPCA up to $20,000.
This offer is good until April 30, 2012.
Double your money and double the number of animals you can help.
Abilene’s newest casino is open for business, and it’s the only one with kennels! Dachshund Dice, Kitty Cards, Pug
Faced Poker, or Ridgeback Roulette, every game will double your money and save lives. You can’t lose and neither can our
animals when you help us match our donor’s challenge.
As you will see in this newsletter, we have not only doubled adoptions at the Abilene Animal Shelter, but we are very
close to tripling them, having set new all-time adoption records in 2011 and again in 2012.
Every dollar counts as we scramble to meet our donor’s Challenge.
Become a Pet Partner and we can double your first year’s gift!
By making monthly donations by credit card or bank draft, our Pet Partners are always there to help our animals. A small
donation each month adds up in a hurry, and now we can double what you give for the first year. If you donate $10 a month as
a Pet Partner, that’s $120 per year. BUT we receive $240 because your gift is doubled.
Pyrenees Pulled Behind Truck
Several years ago, sweet little Taylor, a shaggy terrier, was tied to the bumper of a pickup and dragged down the street
next to the Taylor County Courthouse. While Taylor survived, the driver was never found, despite our offering a reward.
Now, as Yogi Bera used to say, “It’s deja vu all over again!” Earlier this month it seems
Snowman, the huge fluffy Great Pyrenees, got out of his yard one time too many.
His owner was so furious that he tied to dog to his truck bumper and dragged him
home. Along the way, Snowman suffered huge cuts and gouges on all his legs and his
chest. The pads on his back feet were cut away as was one toe.
However, the Sheriff’s department in a county near Abilene was on the case
quickly and arrested the owner for violating the Texas felony statute against torturing
an animal. Local vet Dr. Walker Books gave first aid before we arrived to pick up
Snowman. Dr. Allen Bolt has done surgery and cleaned up the dog’s wounds, and
we are on the road to recovery. We will need a BIG home soon for Snowman.
In 20 West Texas Counties, we are the only group working daily
with law enforcement agencies to fight animal abuse and neglect.
Your donation will double our chances of success!

Lucky Dogs Have Clean Towels Again!
When our washer stopped, the towels piled
up in a hurry. Robert Sudbury quickly placed an
online SOS. Several folks responded with donations, but Connie Booklet Lewis of Stroudsburg,
Pennsylvania emailed to tell us that Home Depot
would soon be delivering a new washer! Apologizing for not giving us a choice since she bought the
one on sale, Connie saved the day. A few days
later, Aaron’s called saying Lucky Dog (their
mascot) was on his way with a new washer and
dryer set! This set will go in our Vet Clinic, giving us two laundry rooms.
Lucky Lucy Loves
Lone Star and CFA
Beautiful Lucy, a dazzling Akita puppy, was ill when
she was dropped off at the Animal Shelter. Aaron Vannoy
rushed her to the Emergency Clinic to find she had Parvo.
Quick treatment, paid for by a grant from the Community
Foundation of Abilene, saved Lucy who was soon
transferred to Lone Star Rescue. Another CFA save!
Horse of
Another Species
If the world did not have
horses, we could all ride Great Danes. Our buddy Apollo
Creed arrived at 149.2 pounds. Seems he was just a little
too big to be a playmate for a little two-year-old child.
Apollo has heartworms, probably the size of an Anaconda,
and is undergoing treatment. He will be ready to “ride”
soon, but you will need a really big dog house.
Was Tiny Tim on the Ark?
As our Mindi Qualls loaded the 2 Labs, 4
Chihuahuas, 4 adult Pyrenees, and 5 BIG Pyrenees puppies, she wondered just how Noah got
everyone aboard the Ark. Many of our calls come
from “out in the country,” where folks have way
too many animals. In this case, our loaded van
went straight to Dr. Bolt’s to check on Tiny Tim
who had a broken leg. The “little” 4-month-old
puppy was soon adopted, and we are working on
the others.
Animal Shelter Closes in on
Tripling Adoptions Since 2008!
2012 was another record-setting year for adoptions at the Abilene Animal
Shelter with nearly 3,000 dogs and cats going to new homes! Our December Home
for the Holidays Sale also set a new record for adoptions in the month of
December.
The most amazing part is that adoptions have almost
tripled since 2008!
In 2012, Rescue the Animals, SPCA and the
City of Abilene increased the number of
monthly sales events at the Animal
Shelter, and we spent more money
on advertising for these events.
Our $20 spay/neuter mail-in
rebates offered at the Animal
Shelter along with the City’s
price reductions are bringing
record numbers of shoppers to the
“pound.” Even more sales events
are planned for 2013.
More adoptions also mean that
animals can stay at the Animal
Shelter for a much longer time.
More time means more adoptions!
More time also means that the
number of animals being reunited
with their owners is rising.
Nearly Three Times as Many Animals
Hit the Road as in 2008
County Workers Save the
Champ
Taylor County road crew members Ricky Walters,
Wayne Helser, and David Barcuch were working south
of Buffalo Gap, when Ricky saw something move in the
brush well off the road and found an emaciated dog
caught in a snare that was probably set for coyotes. After
untangling the dog and cutting him loose, Ricky called
our office, and we raced to help the dog. Champ had been
there for days and did not have much time left. Dr. Allen
Bolt had to use bolt cutters to remove the wire noose that
had worked its way deep into the dog’s ankle. Champ
lost his leg, but he came out prancing after a few days of
good vittles.

Chinese Crested Dominos?
Another big success is the Transfer for Life program that
sends dogs and cats from the pound all over the nation.
The Abilene Animal Shelter is the only shelter in Texas to
receive a grant from the Carroll Petrie Foundation that
helps pay the expenses involved in transferring animals to
rescue groups. 2012 saw nearly three times as many
animals transferred as 2008.
25 Days to Colorado
More time, more transfers.....Rein, a white German
Shepherd, stayed at Abilene Animal Services for 25 days
until Snow Capped Shepherd Rescue in Littleton, Colorado,
said “yes” and arranged a ride to the mountains for him.
Rein was found at Lake Ft. Phantom and had an old injury
that had pushed his jaw out of alignment, but it had healed,
leaving him a bit snaggle-toothed.
Mom
Repunzel
Saralynn
An elderly couple asked our help with a rare Chinese Crested mom and her
puppies. When we placed them on line to locate new homes, another man called
and asked us to take two more Chinese Crested adults he had inherited! Like
falling dominos, we quickly cornered the market in these rare dogs. The puppies
have homes, but we still have the adults.
How Many Miles to Illinois?
How far would you drive for love on the
internet? Benigo Soto once had a beautiful Ridgeback and fell instantly in love with
a Ridgeback on the Abilene Animal Shelter
website. The quick trip from Illinois “cost me
around $1400 (with car repairs), and I would
do it all over again,” said Benigo. “There were
beautiful animals at the shelter. Why anyone
from Abilene wouldn’t adopt before purchasing
a pet is beyond my comprehension.”
No Rush, It’s Not 2014 Yet!
Was the dog’s owner waiting for the start of the
new national health care in 2014? He must have
been. The little dog broke his leg in early 2012 and
was never treated! Animal Services was asked to
do a welfare check in December, picked up the dog,
and asked APD to investigate. With funds from the
Community Foundation of Abilene, Dr. Lynn Lawhon
amputated the dog’s leg, and he was off to a new
home. Maybe his owner will be too!
Daisy Dumped at Dam
Animal dumping is a huge problem all over
our area. Thousands of unwanted cats and
dogs are dumped every year. Daisy, with
multiple scrapes and bruises, was dumped
at Lake Ft. Phantom along with her puppies.
The puppies quickly found homes and the
Shelter 2 Shelter Coalition (one of our transfer
partners) took Daisy to happier days!
Dr.Vic Lee Doubles the Braces
In 2011, Dr. Vic Lee of Lee Orthodontics
raffled off a complete orthodontic package to
benefit Rescue the Animals, SPCA. In 2012,
he doubled the deal, giving two lucky winners
FREE BRACES and our dogs and cats a pile
of cash. Dr. Lee and winners Emily Nadeau
and Abigail Slawson were all smiles about a
promotion that has produced over $10,000 in
two years to help our animals.
