Udine is at the heart of Europe. A few kilometers away
there is Aquileia, an old Roman town founded in 181
BC, with rich archeological finds, where students
and professors from the University often go on digs.

he now rests at the Altar of the Motherland, in memory of
those who died in all wars.

Living Udine
THE CITY
AND ITS EVENTS
Students who come and study in
Udine always have a great experience
and go away with a wealth of happy
memories: they form life-long
friendships and many stay on!
Udine is a people-friendly city: it offers all the
attractions of a bigger center – pubs, cafes,
restaurants, wine bars, coffee shops, discos,
theaters, cinemas, gyms and so on – but it retains
its human dimension – it is safe and compact,
so you can walk or cycle everywhere and at all
times of the day and night.
Moreover, music-lovers can supplement
their university training at the local conservatory
(www.conservatorio.udine.it).
international student guide
SURROUNDINGS
The city has a very rich and varied calendar
of cultural events: from music concerts (rock,
pop, rap, jazz, classical) to the internationally
acclaimed Far East Cinema Festival in ApriI.
And don’t miss the food and wine extravaganza
that is Friuli DOC (September). Shops, art
galleries, museums: Udine has it all!
Knowledge Festival
In order to spread the love for knowledge, during
the first weekend of July the University organizes
an annual Knowledge Festival. The event is
aimed at promoting an exchange of scientific
research, educational trends and new knowledges
through meetings with internationally acclaimed
philosophers, writers, journalists and scientists in
the town squares and through didactic laboratories,
technological installations and debates.
UNIUD / 18
There is just so much to see and do
in and around Udine!
Cultural sites? Cividale is hard to beat, with
its Longobard treasures, but there’s also Villa
Manin, near Codroipo, where Napoleon stayed
before signing the Treaty of Campoformido
(you can see his bed!), Palmanova, the starshaped fortified town, and the Roman remains
at Aquileia. There’s the beautiful unspoilt
countryside of the hills and valleys, where you
can eat local food and drink local wine for next
to nothing at the “frasche” or village “sagre”.
If you want to venture further afield, (Trieste
is only 70 kilometers away, Venice 140, and
if you want to visit other countries, Austria,
Slovenia and Croatia are nearby and easily
reached by public transport).
UNIUD / 19
SPORTS
IN FRIULI
If you like sport, come to Friuli!
We have a vast range of sporting facilities to offer.
Situated half-way between the mountains and the
sea, the choice of sport is yours: in winter you can
head north to the mountains, for skiing (all types,
from Alpine to cross-country), snowboarding,
sledding, skating and tobogganing. Or in summer
you can hike, climb, swim in the Alpine lakes,
cycle or mountain bike.
If you prefer the sea, it's just a short ride (or cycle)
away. You can go to Grado or Lignano, where you
can swim, sail, kite surf, wind surf, canoe, do water
aerobics or snorkeling (the Trieste coast is best
for this), bodyboarding, jet ski, beach volleyballor simply laze on the beach of course.
And if you're a football fan, you have to go to
Stadio Friuli to watch Udinese!
