September 2011
by Gordon Kohl
Hello to ALSI Friends!
Our ALSI meeting
was spectacular this August. Several members
played beautifully their
music selections. Club
members are practicing
new and interesting
songs to share at our
monthly time together,
thanks to all of you. It is
very nice to hear expressive songs played with a
musical flair! Keep practicing and adding those
musical tricks to your
solos.
The Showcase Per-
His skills and artistic
talent as an accordionist
places him in a group of
perhaps fifty (50) superb
concert style accordionists left in America. Let
us keep these “rare”
music geniuses in our
midst and doing wonderful public performances.
On we go to the
upcoming fall entertainment scheduled here at
ALSI. A great, local and
very talented accordionist, dancer and singer,
Ms. Linda Hibbert, will
share her keyboard wizardry at ALSI on September 11th. Linda
plays both an acoustic
reed accordion and a
“Concerto” digital/reed
instrument. She has improved her skills here at
ALSI and through diligent study. We are definitely going to hear
some great music.
Some of you players
can bring your talent out
in the open by dusting
off some of your repertoire and performing for
us. It’s your time to
shine here at ALSI!
It is also time to sign
up for Octoberfest Day
in Balboa Park and our
yearly Heritage Festival
with great ethnic music
from many countries.
Contact Bill Barr regarding sign up for Octoberfest and look for a
sign up sheet for Heritage Day Performers at
the September meeting.
Best Wishes
to Everyone!

COMING THIS MONTH
First of all I really love the accordion,
I love the reeds and the vibrations of them
against your chest , it makes the accordion
a part of you. I do not feel this with a piano. I am thankful to have been a part of
ALSI
since
about
1988.
I first became acquainted with the accordion when I was about nine year's old. A lady
came to our house in Allied Gardens, with
a twelve week lesson program and a rental
twelve bass accordion at Ozzie's Music
Studio on El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego. Because my father loved the accordion and
wanted me to play, he bought me a small
pearl blue 120 -bass Petosa accordion. I
thought it was the most beautiful thing, I even
liked the new leather smell.
I played
pretty well but after a year or so was not
able to read music. My teacher would
play my lesson for me and I was playing by
ear only. My father took me to Bertolino's Accordion Studio. Mr. Bertolino knew I
could not read music and set about to make sure I could read music. He was a great teacher, and would not play my
lesson. He made me learn to read and would dazzle me with his playing skills. I really liked the way Mr. Bertalino
sounded with his professional accordion. I had hopes of playing like him someday. Also, I remember hearing Lou Fanucchi play in the studio and recitals, he was the child prodigy and he inspired me to practice more. Thanks ALSI for
all of the years of great accordion music experience and fellowship that I've enjoyed because of this great club. "Viva la
Accordion"! —

FESTIVAL REVIEW
The A.T.G. Orlando Florida Accordion Festival and Competition
by Gordon Kohl
The A.T.G., Accordion Teachers Guild, is
an accordion music organization which was
founded seventy-one (71) years ago by the
late Maestro Galla-Rini. The yearly affair has a
variety of events always scheduled.
One of the events featured at the festival
was the Roland competition. The competition
determines the U.S. champion in a senior and
(left) Junior Winner: Daniel Pavlotsky
(right) Senior Winner: Danielle Renzi
junior division. The above Senior Winner of
the competition will represent the United
States in the world Roland Accordion Competition. The event will be held this October in
Rome, Italy.
The competition consisted of each contestant having to perform three selections uti-
lizing an array of both solo and orchestral digital
sound’s using the Roland reed less accordion.
The selections were fantastic, very musical
and represented excellent use of a digital instrument. The expressiveness of the digital accordion was unbelievable. As an accordionist, I was
amazed at the authenticity of the digital accordion sounds featured in the Roland V accordion.
Now a little about this year’s winner, Danielle
Renzi, she is a nineteen year old from Rhode Island. She has great potential as an accordion artist. It is interesting that one of her other passions is biology, which she will be studying in college. As for many musicians, music and science
go together both being analytical and challenging.
A rewarding element of this gathering of accordionists and teachers is to play as a part of an
energized orchestra under the direction of wonderful conductors.
This year, as in past years, Ms Joan Cochran
Sommers has been a favorite conductor bringing
a song to life with beautiful melodic expression
and impulsive rhythm by accordionists playing
from several countries of origin.
This year the ATG Orchestra comprised of
some eighty (80) members; sixty (60) from Scotland, and twenty (20) from the U.S.A.
The highlight of the festival was concert night.
The concert featured accordion soloists from the
U.S.A., Italy and Russia.
The orchestra played four selections. The
first selection was an original composition of the
late Maestro Galla-Rini titled “The Paragon
March”. The second piece was full of energy and
was from the musical Fame called “Flash dance”.
The third song was a jazzy tune, “Racuerdo” an
original orchestration from the talented Ms. Amy
Jo Sawyer. The orchestra’s final selection was an
instant favorite with the orchestra titled “Rock n
Roll Trilogy” a Randy Martin arrangement from
Los Angeles, California.

SHOWCASE REVIEW
PETER ROBUFFO SHOWCASE
AUGUST 14, 2011
by Bob Warner
If you were not here this great Sunday afternoon you really missed it. Peter Robuffo
was here, a superb, fantastic, outstanding, impressive, world class accordionist. I could stop
here because there are not many other adjectives that can adequately describe the skills of
this master musician. I first heard Peter play
about 10 years ago at an AFNA event in Long
Beach. All
he
has
done is get
better – if
that’s possible.
He
has reached
extraordinary levels
of competence in his
musical life.
Peter plays
a
great
sounding,
amplified
Excelsiola accordion. There was nothing else,
just a fine sounding acoustic accordion played
with an exquisite skill that most of us just
dream about. I dare to say that Peter is one of
the most underrated accordionists around.
Not enough people have heard about him and
they should have. He has an extensive classical
and novelty repertoire but he is equally at
home with swing and jazz as we soon found
out. This was an awesome program today,
performed completely from memory and with
all of the nuances the accordion is capable of.
As he launched into Gus Durand’s “WALTZ
IN E FLAT” I’m sure that everyone was immediately struck by his crisp, clean, fluent keyboard
technique in a piece that seemed to be designed
to exhibit the virtues of the accordion. This is
playing with authority and confidence. His
presentation of this high energy waltz was impressive, especially for being the first number.
He followed this with “A GAY RANCHERO”
played at a pace slightly slower than most accordionists have in the past. The melodic and rhythmic ‘EL RELICARIO” by Joseph Padilla was a dazzling arrangement full of melody and rhythm
played at a paso doble tempo. A program would
not ever be complete without a polka, but in this
case, Peter showed us a new one called
“LOUIE’S POLKA”. This was a bouncy, infectious piece full of runs and arpeggios composed
by one of his former teachers, John Caruso. It
was refreshing to hear a new polka.
“CARNIVALE”, a novelty composition by
Charles Magnante, displayed that curious combination of melody and technical fireworks that
the old timers of the Golden Age of the Accordion were so good at. Peter added his own special embellishments as usual, triple bellows shake
being one of them.
Jazz has been a part of Peter’s music for a
long time. He gave us two pieces, “THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE” by Johnny Mandel and
“SATIN DOLL” by Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington and Johnny Mercer. These sophisticated, elegant arrangements of Peter’s were a pleasure to
listen to. It was all there, big chords, embellishments with runs and arpeggios slipped in where
they belonged to make a cohesive presentation. I
believe I heard a little bit of Art Van Damme
here and there, too. “HOLIDAY FOR
CHORDS”, a Magnante composition, showed us
another side of the accordion. The left hand
parts were played only on the chord buttons
with no fundamental base being used. The result

is a novel, softer musical tone that technically
would make you think about what you are doing with the left hand. The piece itself was
more or less like a lilting tone poem but with a
rhythmic jazz beat in 6/8 time part way
through. This piece was no pushover; there
was a lot to it.
Peter’s performance of the rousing overture to the opera “MARRIAGE OF FIGARO”
was pure classical virtuoso. I have always said
this piece transcribes perfectly for the accordion. I’m sure Mozart would have been pleased
to hear it. It takes technique at the highest level
to play it right. Peter’s skills with dance music
are replete with numbers like ‘WAVE”,
“BESAME MUCHO” and “JALOUSIE”. These
were all virtuoso arrangements of his, especially “JALOUSIE”. To finish his program, Peter
played his show stopper arrangement of
George Gershwin’s “RHAPSODY IN BLUE”. It
was a most remarkable virtuoso performance replete with technical skills and artistry.
I’m sure we were all mesmerized with this
performance today. If you ever hear of a Peter
Robuffo venue it’s worth at least a days drive
to hear him. We will surely have him back next
year! —

FESTIVAL REVIEW—continued
The audience enjoyed all of the selections.
However, when the orchestra performed the
Rock Trilogy, conducted by Mr. Bruce Gassman,
everyone played with a super intensity and passion. The orchestra received a standing ovation.
They also had a great experience practicing
and playing to a wonderful audience which appreciated the accordion as an orchestral instrument.
Prior to the final evening of the festival,
there were many accordion workshops, demonstrations by teachers, exhibition performances
by wonderful Chinese musicians and Scottish,
young teens.
Guest artist performed wonderfully, playing
classical music from Russian composers on the
unique Bayon Accordion.
There were several music workshops and
music clinics which were inspiring. Topics covered were: playing better left hand fills, playing
the Blues scales in and around a melody, adding
the technique necessary to enhance classical
melodies, and how attention should be given to
the bellows, rhythm and fingering.
All in all the ATG as an organization offers
opportunities to accordion teachers and performers to share and fine tune their skills once
a year. There is always something to learn and
improve upon in one’s musicianship and teaching knowledge.
Come be a part of a fun and rewarding music organization. I am glad that I joined.
The yearly convention is in a new city almost every year. In past years the conventions
have been held in Nashville, Tennessee; Dallas,
Texas; Washington D.C.; Santa Clara, California; and Orlando, Florida.
Guess what, next year we will be having the
convention in Chicago, Illinois. This is a city
with many heritages featuring music with the
Accordion. Hope I see you in Chicago in July
2012. —
