BOARD OF DIRECTORS Marilyn Mesh, MEd, MAc President Rebecca Ragosta, MHS Vice President Larry Dankner Treasurer Jan Robinson, MSN, RN Secretary Carol Barnard Laura Berns, PhD Margaret Eppes Runi Foster, MD J.T. Frankenberger, JD Jane Gay Victoria Goodwin, RDH, MEd Paula Guerrein Leslie Hendeles, PharmD Christy Harris Lemak, PhD Ellen Lopez, MPH, PhD John Meuleman, MD Cristina Palacio, JD Lorie Primosch, RDH, MEd Boyd Robinson, DDS, MEd Mimi Balch, MD Co-Volunteer Medical Director John Meuleman, MD Co-Volunteer Medical Director Sheryl Ely, DMD Volunteer Dental Director Stuart Wegener Executive Director In early June, the United Way of North Central Florida announced ACORN Clinic was the recipient of a grant of $20,000 to support the costs of providing pediatric dental and medical services to children through the Success by Six Initiative. Designed to ensure every child enters kindergarten ready to learn, the first year of this Initiative was kicked off after a broad and open competition among interested local nonprofit agencies and organizations. The grant will underwrite the costs of enhancing our services to assist primarily rural and low-income children to enter school healthy so that they can focus their energies on learning! ACORN Clinic provides a low cost solution to rural north central Florida residents in need of quality health care. ACORN Clinic Transitions to A New Look! You can see strong evidence of ACORN’s new look in these pages! During 2005, ACORN undertook a comprehensive review of its logo and attendant images which had remained the same nearly since the Clinic’s inception. Working with a Santa Fe Community College graphic design class, a formal competition was held among its students, who produced nine different options for our consideration. For an organization which seeks to maximize its scarce funds, this was a golden opportunity to obtain high quality assistance at minimal cost! The new design logo on the front of this newsletter was chosen by the Clinic’s Board of Directors as the winning selection. It was designed by Elise Powers, a recent SFCC graduate in Graphic Design. We are delighted with our new look and hope you’ll like it, too! Mark Your Calendars! Three organizations of special mention which have supported targeted outreach initiatives in women’s health and dental education are the North Florida Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the American Dental Association’s Samuel Harris Fund and the AVON Foundation Breast Care Fund. We are grateful for their advocacy of the Clinic’s role in these important areas! ewsletter Summer 2006 ACORN Receives Major Gift… A New Parking Lot! Through the generosity of the Hipp Construction Company of Alachua, ACORN patients and staff are enjoying a newly paved parking lot! Our facilities were greatly improved in 2001 but the parking lot seemed less pressing compared to other organizational priorities. Ed Culpepper, husband of Kay Culpepper - ACORN’s Caseworker, was instrumental in identifyStuart Wegener thanks the ing local resources that could help. Enter Hipp Construction Company Crew the Hipp Family, who decided that it was time that the dust bowl-like conditions had to change and helped leverage a new layer of asphalt. APAC-Southeast, Inc., First Coast Division assisted in this process. We are most grateful for this extraordinary gift, which has greatly improved the ease with which our patients and staff access the Clinic. Thanks, Hipp Family and the crew from APAC-Southeast! In Gratitude For One of ACORN’s Earliest Volunteers We are truly grateful for having benefited from the services of Mrs. Annie Langham, who passed away in Gainesville earlier this spring. A consummate volunteer, Mrs. Langham was a dedicated Board member during the 1970’s. She volunteered faithfully at the Clinic during its early years, the history of which she captured in writing. Her work remains the best source of information about the Clinic’s roots. Donors have made many gifts to ACORN in her remembrance. We extend our deepest sympathy to Dr. Max Langham and the entire Langham family. ACORN Clinic Programs Update The Dental Clinic The Medical Clinic A major transition in leadership has occurred during the past month: Dr. Micaela Gibbs has completed her role as the senior dental student faculty supervisor. She is now the Director of Community Based Programs at the College of Dentistry at UF. We are happy for her, yet will always miss her compassion and caring as well as her outstanding Dr. Micaela clinical expertise! We have Gibbs, DDS certainly benefited by havQuinn Lybing Dr. Gibbs here these bert, DMD last few years. She is an extraordinary teacher and a lot of fun to work with! Thank you, Micaela, from all the Cont. on Pg. 6 Real Life Stories from the Medical Clinic Ms. NF is a middle age female with a long history of morbid obesity. She has tried multiple times to lose weight only to be either unsuccessful or regain the weight she has lost. We were recently able to enroll her in a program at a local health and fitness center, despite her lack of resources to cover the cost of the program. It was a team effort to get her established in a quality program where she also did not have to worry about making payments. She was hesitant at first but was able to speak with other clients here at the Clinic who were successful in sustaining weight loss through lifestyle changes emphasized by the program. NF is steadily losing weight, and has changed her diet. Assuming her position as faculty supervisor for our dental students is P. Quinn Lybbert, D.M.D. He is a native of Banff, Alberta, Canada and completed his General Practice Residency at the Malcom Randall V.A. Center in Gainesville during June, 2006. Quinn spent considerable time in Belize, Central America as Co-Director of the International Service Learning Dental Clinic there. He is a tremendous addition to the Clinic…very skilled and pleasant to work with to boot! We are delighted to have him aboard! During the first six months of the year, the Dental Clinic served over 1,900 patients, including 300 new patients! Services provided included: 650 child and adult cleanings; 405 sealants for children’s permanent teeth; 698 extractions; 1,185 fillings and composite fillings; 77 crowns; and, 71 partial and full dentures. Our Dental Outreach Program remains a powerful educational tool. The Tooth Fairies wrapped up in June for the 2005-2006 School Year, after presenting their popular educational program of proper oral hygiene care to over 3,000 children in Alachua, Bradford, Columbia, Hamilton, Lafayette, Suwannee and Union Counties! Continued from Page 4...Medical Clinic increase her activity and endurance levels. She remains motivated to stay with the program and is committed to losing weight and improving her health. Upon a recent visit with her doctor at ACORN, NF reports she feels great support from her trainer, and especially from her health care professionals at the Clinic. She is an inspiration to all of us! Ms. DX is 48 years old and was recently diagnosed with diabetes. She was seen in the Clinic with a blood sugar too high to be read on our equipment. She was sent to the emergency room where she was found to have a blood sugar reading of 722. Due to her lack of any health insurance, she requested that the Hospital not admit her but allow her to come home for outpatient diabetes management through the Clinic. Her Hospital doctor was reluctant to send her home but finally agreed as DX promised to follow up in the Clinic the next day. We were able to consult with our MD and get insulin orders, teach DX insulin injection techniques, and give her a glucometer to monitor her blood sugar. We also supplied her with insulin and syringes. We stayed in phone contact with her over the weekend to answer her questions and saw her back on Monday to further titrate her insulin as she was on four injections a day. Over a period of weeks, with frequent visits and diabetic education, DX now has optimal control of her diabetes and has returned to work full time! She is advocating with her employer to obtain health insurance but due to her now pre-existing condition, she is having great difficulty obtaining health care insurance at any price. Unfortunately, this is a story we hear much too often. It remains our mission to advocate for and manage our patient’s health care needs by utilizing the resources we have available to us. We get letters of thanks…. Our patients are always extremely grateful for the services they receive at the Clinic and we hear from some of them in writing. We also hear from those for whom the Clinic is a marvelous place to support, in order to help others less fortunate receive the care they need. Here are two recent letters we thought you’d be interested in: Thank you so much for being patient with my inability to pay my bill til now. My poverty has been very difficult in so many aspects of my life. Also, thank you for all the dental care that I’ve received & otherwise couldn’t afford. -Mary B. Dear ACORN, Please accept this donation of money saved over several years by Rena Cohen (age 5½) and Amy Cohen (age 3 ½). They wanted it to go to a “hospital” for people who don’t have enough money to pay for the doctor themselves. Sincerely, -Karen Cohen ACORNewsletter - Summer 2006 Page 7 Letter from the Director... Dear Friends of ACORN Clinic: As summer draws to a close, it is truly my pleasure to share with you some of the most recent activities taking place at ACORN. Take a look in this newsletter at the many ways ACORN makes a difference in the lives of patients throughout north central Florida! Our capacity to do so, of course, is greatly leveraged by the support the Clinic receives from our donors, partners and volunteers. I joined ACORN earlier this year as only its fifth executive director in the past 32 years. Having viewed ACORN from a distance for many years and admired how it persevered to fulfill its mission, joining its leadership seemed a natural choice to me when asked to consider it. Despite a relatively short tenure here, I can report that I remain in considerable admiration of the organization, and how it serves our rural neighbors in need of health care and social services. The staff’s incredible continuity of service and compassionate care…the Board’s complete dedication to serving our patients and ability to squeeze the most out of every dollar… leads me to be very grateful for the opportunity to serve. Many of you are aware of the significant challenges ACORN faces as the health care arena continues to experience considerable fluctuation. The viability of so many health care organizations continues to be tested and that process is unlikely to change soon. I want to thank you for your personal belief in the value of ACORN to ensuring quality rural health care gets to those who need it the most. ACORN’s strong partnership with you and so many other supporters is critical to our making a tremendous difference for the health of our community’s most vulnerable. Simply put, for ACORN to continue to be an exceptional resource for our patients requires funds, such as those made available by gifts from you and other Friends of ACORN. I hope you will continue with us on our journey as we seek to make quality health care accessible to each patient, one step at a time! Stuart Wegener Executive Director Yes, I want to support ACORN Clinic! Enclosed is my tax deductible gift of: $25 $50 $100 $500 $1000 Your investment enables ACORN to bring hope and changes lives.
