First of all let me say congratulations to the Greeters for a fantastic Denim and Diamonds party, lady Judi and I had a wonderful time and it truly was a night to remember. GREAT JOB GREETERS! Then it was off to the land of Kansas for the Brew to Brew run. I have yet to understand why someone would run all those miles when no one is chasing them, but it sure seems popular for those that enjoy running. Let me say thank you to Jim Kerns and the Kansas City track club for allowing Ararat Shrine to be a part of such a great event. Also a great big thank you for the generous donation to Ararat Shine. To all that worked this event thank you, you hard work and generosity of time is what make this such a large success. The next thing you know we are in Lathrop Missouri for the one and only Ararat Shrine swap meet. Again the nobility of Ararat Shrine, shines! Everywhere you look or turn you see a Shriner working from daylight to dark, have fun and making another event a success. Thank you to all of you, there is no way we could have this event without your hard work and dedication. Steve what a fantastic job you have done this year as the Liaison to this event, I know you had a great team that made it very easy to be the custodian to this project. Again great job to all! Last but not least, I would like for you all to know that it has been truly a wonderful experience to serve as your Potentate thus far this year. It is an honor and a privilege to spend my time with a wonderful group on nobles and ladies. What a humbling experience! I thank the good Lord each and every day for my blessing and I thank you all as well. Remember “Dreams to Reality” for Ararat Shrine and Shiners’ Hospitals for Children. Yours in Faith, Maurice Camerlynck Potentate 2014 “Dreams to Reality” Attention All Units and Clubs… A rarat’s Membership Committee is hard at work on our New Nobles Handbook. This book is a starter manual for our new nobles that will assist them in knowing a bit about the goings on in our Shrine Center. Each unit and club will be called upon to provide some information about their operation. In effect, each club and unit will be given a one page “Advertisement” for each new noble. Be sure to include a statement about what you focus on, when and where you meet. What it costs to join and why a Noble would LOVE to be a part of the group. This MUST be turned in to Jim Gargotta or Bill Warren by Wednesday, May 14, 2014. If your unit and club do not make a submittal, your information will not be in our next publication. If you need help, please reach out to Jim and Bill; they will be happy to assist. James Gargotta: 913-645-4760 [email protected] Bill Warren: 913- 215-1964 [email protected] The Annual Vidalia Onion Sale will start the first part of May and run until we are sold out. Watch The Buzz emails for the exact day and visit our website at www.araratshrine. com for locations throughout the Kansas City Metro area. www.araratshrine.com ARARAT SHRINE NEWS |3 Hospital News Hospital Van Drivers If you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital Transportation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever experience. We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner. A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital Van in the month of March! Ernest Conner John Foster Leroy Graham Ron Griep Howard Silvers Notes from Board of Governors St. Louis Shriners Hospital for Children by Wayne Spencer P.P. T he new Hospital continues to progress at a rapid pace. The Staff is developing processes and policies to expedite the move when the time comes. The Staff is really excited about the new building and their new home. It should be an exciting new era. While we are discussing the future, we are getting ready to celebrate the past. The 90th Anniversary Party Gala is scheduled for August 22nd and 23rd. As I understand it now, it will be held in the Fox Theater in St. Louis. The theme is the Roaring Twenties. More to come on this, but if you can go it should be a great time. There will be local St. Louis celebrities and I am sure Imperial Officers present. There will be a block of hotel rooms available. Keep your eyes and ears posted for the upcoming announcements. The referrals are still down from previous years and our patient load is declining as a result. Remember, if you have a neighbor or friend with a child in need, we need to get them in the system. Shriner referrals are still one of the main ways we get patients. We need to support our hospital and help our community at the same time. We call them referrals, but it is Love to the Rescue. Speaking of patient referrals, there are some questions surrounding the insurance co-payment requirement. By law, if a parent or caregiver has insurance for the patient and there is a co-pay involved, the Shriner’s Hospitals must attempt to collect this co-pay. However, we do not refer the parent or caregiver to a collection agency for failure to pay. If someone questions you about this and they have concerns, please refer them to the billing department at St. Louis Hospital. At the risk of being a Philadelphia lawyer, it is better for us as Nobles to refer to the source. Bottom line is that we are still taking care of our kids regardless of their ability to pay. Telemedicine still is struggling along, but the committee is doing all it can to make it a more viable source for the Hospital. Headquarters is now looking into developing an insurance code for this service. Historical data being tracked will be used in this endeavor. The current capital program has netted over $3 million dollars so far and they are looking for Corporate and Foundation sponsors. If you know a connection with a Foundation or Corporation, please let me know and we can have the Community Relations and Development team at St. Louis make contact. We need to keep our Hospital financially strong. For a closing, I will make my pitch again for Hospital Van Drivers at Ararat. Our drivers make many trips a month to St. Louis and could use some assistance. If you are interested, please contact the Hospital Office at Ararat and they will be happy to explain the program and requirements. Until next time, remember to support our Kids and our Hospitals. 2014 ararat parade schedule Don Pittier, Sr. - Director of Uniformed Units • 913-620-9957 DATELINE-UP TIME/PARADE TIMELOCATION 05/03/2014....................... 9:00 AM/10:00 AM............Missouri City, MO (Volunteer) Breakfast - MO City Masonic Lodge 7 am 05/03/2014...................... 12:00 noon/1:00 PM................................. Festival of Champions - Warrensburg 11/20-23/2014.............................................................Circus - Municipal Auditorium 4 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS MAY 2014 Food &Wine By STEVE DOWDY T he Bordeaux grape varieties are some of the most widely traveled grapes in the world. Because everyone likes red Bordeaux, everyone wants to grow its main grape, Cabernet Sauvignon. Because most Cabernet Sauvignon is better with a little of some other grape added the other Bordeaux grapes, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, have come along. The classic flavor of red Bordeaux is black currants and cedarwood, and that’s basically the flavor of Cabernet Sauvignon. In warmer spots, it is bigger and richer; in cooler spots, it tastes a bit green. That’s not so desirable. Just about anywhere you can think of has Cabernet Sauvignon, either bottled on its own or filled out with a touch of something else. In parts of Bordeaux, Merlot has taken over as the main grape in the blend, usually stiffened with a little Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc to give it a little more backbone. It makes a softer wine than Cabernet Sauvignon, with lusher, plummier, fruit, but it doesn’t usually age as well. The two grapes together can make a perfect marriage, and more and more growers of Cabernet Sauvignon are seeing the virtues of adding some Merlot. You wouldn’t often see a varietal Cabernet Franc, although some do exist here and there. The Loire Valley in France is where it is most widely grown for its own merits. The reds of Chinon, Samour-Champigny, and Bourgeuil are what to look for. It has a grassier, lighter, more raspberryish flavor than Cabernet Sauvignon. In a blend, especially with Bordeaux, it adds perfume and elegance. The great Chateau Cheval Blanc in Bordeaux contains a lot of Cabernet Blanc. MysteriousAppearance The Chaplain’s Corner BY, LOYD R. GENTRY I confess. I’m a “people watcher!” Others in my family accuse me of “gawking.” I’m guilty. I like to sit at shopping centers, public concerts, sporting events, parks, etc. “watching all the people go by.” I don’t like what I’m seeing these days. People hungering for a sense of belonging. Young people who feel that that no one really cares. Individuals of all ages caught in the treadmill of trying, without achieving. What is missing from each of these lives? HOPE! I congratulate our Potentate, Maurice Camerlynck, upon the choice of his 2014 theme. It takes him only three words to ask you and me and all of Ararat to HOPE! Study the picture on our Calendar of Events Book and what do you see? HOPE! HOPE keeps us looking ahead. HOPE flies the flag of expectation. Where there’s HOPE, there’s wholesome enthusiasm. A Shriner came upon a boy patiently fishing at a favorite fishing hole. “How many have you caught?” he asked. Without turning around the boy answered, “If I catch the one I’m after now, and the two more, I’ll have three.” It is HOPE that gives us enthusiasm for whatever we are doing. Where there’s HOPE there’s earnest effort. HOPE inspires us to invest our effort in any endeavor. Another boy sat on the banks of a fishing stream when he was approached and asked if he had caught anything. “I haven’t caught as many as I hoped, but then I didn’t expect to. Brothers, it is only as we anticipate great things that we will attempt and accomplish them. How many Ararat dreams can we turn into realities in 2014? THE PHANTOM REPORTER S ighted at the Arab Shrine Potentate’s Ball, this sinister apparition wandered around for a few minutes, and tried to kiss a small, blonde Lady wearing a white dress & cowboy boots. There have been no reports of injury from any of his actions, although some witnesses reported difficulty breathing, possibly resulting from excessive expressions of gaiety and disbelief. Reportedly, some normal people allegedly recognized the creature and suggested that he was an interloper from another Shrine Temple far to the east of Arab, possibly from another state. If you should happen to encounter him, scream loudly and leave the area around him immediately. The Illustrious Potentate of Ararat Shrine has been contacted, but he insists that this strange creature is unknown anywhere east Tonganoxie. I ATTENTION ALL TRADESMEN OF ARARAT SHRINE n the interest of maintaining our facility, we are looking to establish a list of qualified tradesmen to volunteer for projects necessary for the upkeep and preventive maintenance of the Ararat facility. If you are qualified in air conditioning, refrigeration, electrical, carpentry, flooring, plumbing, plastering, painting or any other building trade, we would like to hear from you. There will be a Building Committee formed and this committee will coordinate the necessary projects for the Temple. If you are interested, please provide your name, contact information, hours of availability and area of expertise to the Business Office. We thank you in advance for your willingness to be involved in the preservation of your Ararat building. www.araratshrine.com ARARAT SHRINE NEWS |5 MING esoosHmmmm,SOON let’s COMING SOON WWa LOCATION COMING SOON o als o wh co, NEW LOCATION h let’s NEW LOCATION THVILLE,MO h atc scr can He COMING o also SMITHVILLE,MO HVILLE,MO SMITSOON play well with Nobody Told Me! I didn’t buy any, probably because I’ve got so many statues around my house that I can’t find a table to eat on. I liked the old tools that were for sale, too. The men selling the tools were as interesting as the tools, too. One fellow would pick up a tool and describe the entire history of that tool, starting when the first pre-historic ape used a rock for whatever that tool is used for. Amazing. And, fascinating, too. Then, by mid-afternoon on Saturday, you could see more than a few Shriners sleeping in the lunch hall, in their cars, and, if you looked hard enough, I suspect you could find a couple of Nobles asleep standing up. In their defense, some of them had been working since Friday morning, and none of them were lazy. Shrineta did a great job of feeding us. Must have been a dozen or more Nobles working behind the counter to keep the other three or four hundred Nobles from starving. Barbecued ribs and pulled pork sandwiches, slaw, and potato salad. It don’t get no better than that! Thanks, Shrineta! This is what makes me proud to be a Shriner. One of many things that make me proud. It’s not the making money; it’s just that our Nobles, my friends, are so willing to work like nervous ants to make it a success. There’s not enough money in the world to pay somebody to work this hard, but these guys, and their Ladies, do it for free, and with a smile. I am not alone in noticing this. Our Pro Shop is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. We are trying to trim our budget by running our golf with volunteers. If you can do an afternoon or morning shift it would be a tremendous help in trimming our overall cost and keeping this club alive. Our Senior Golf has already begun on Fridays at 1:00 pm. Come out for a good time on the course and cool down afterwards in the Bar. As always, our prayers are with our sick and disabled. Pray for those who suffered loss and for those brave men and women who serve this great nation. Assistant Rabban Steve Johnson informed the Captain of the Guard that the Potentate was about to open Ararat Temple for business. That done, Captain of the Guard Bud Higginbotham informed the Outer Guard, and then reported to Noble Johnson, who informed Illustrious Sir Maurice that the Temple was under a double and trusty guard. Chief Rabban Clarence Kirby surveyed the crowd and informed the Potentate that our Temple was free from jeopardy as there were none present save members of our order. The Potentate replied “’Tis well.” Oriental Guide Henry McDaniel prepared the Altar. Chaplain Loyd Gentry remembered our Nobles who had been visited by the Black Camel and gave the invocation. The Legion of Honor and the Ararat Pipes & Drums presented the colors, to the accompaniment of the Ararat Dixieland band. The assembled Nobles, led by Chief Rabban Kirby, recited the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance. Noble Jacque Mote led us in singing the National Anthem. The Dixieland Band accompanied us. In compliance with a motion passed in February, the minutes of the March Meeting were distributed on the chairs, and were not read. Recorder Mike Wheeler read three Petitions for Creation and two Petitions for Affiliation. Those Petitions were approved by secret ballot. There was one Petition for Restoration, and none for Demits or Remission. Treasurer Nick Baldi gave the Treasurer’s Report. Revenue exceeded expenses for the General Fund, as was the case for most funds. The Restaurant had a profit for the month of March. Approximately 400 Vendor spots have been sold, and more sales are expected. The Restaurant is expected to start serving lunch by mid-May. Substituting for High Priest & Prophet Randy Berry, Ill. Sir Maurice spoke of this year’s Vidalia Onion Sales Program. ARARAT SHRINE NEWS | 11 Ararat Ladies Without Nobles BY MARVA McARTHUR-LaFON, SCRIBE ur March meeting featured Claron Fisher accompanied by Muir, a beautiful black Lab mix puppy. He is the 11th puppy that Claron has raised and trained for Canine Companions. She trains each puppy to ring a bell to go outside and to obey basic commands of “sit,” “stand,” “heel,” etc. as well as to pick up an item and give it to her. Muir accompanies her to the store, church, and everywhere she goes. The puppy must learn to adapt to any location their handicapped person may go. When the puppy is 16 to 18 months old, Claron delivers it to a Boot Camp for extensive training. Only fifty percent successfully pass. Others are put up for adoption. Those who pass are offered to eligible handicapped people as their personal canine companions. The dog allows their human to be more independent and have a better quality of life. Dean Koontz gave proceeds from three books that he wrote with his golden Retriever, Trixie, to a fund set up to assist needy handicapped persons with Canine Companions to use to feed and care for the dogs. Ladies enjoyed lemon bar cookies, brownies and chocolate candy “eggs.” Each table had a centerpiece of a ceramic birdhouse to remind us it really is Spring - - according to the calendar. “Thank you” Gloria Jackson and Barbara Greeley for this month’s refreshments and decorations. Long stem roses were given to Veita Anderson and Gloria Sutton to celebrate their March birthdays. We discussed a proposed bus trip to Paola, KS on June 17th with interesting stops and lunch at a German restaurant. Members should sign up for this trip at our April meeting. The attendance was great and once again the food was delicious. Noble Bill Fickle, owner of Side Pockets in Blue Springs, provided the main course of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans and of course our Ladies provided the rest. Our President, Noble Phil Meisenheimer started the meeting. We ate and then we got down to club business. We welcomed some new members to the club, Noble Dean Bezingue and Noble Charlie White and Lady Kim. Wow, BSSC just keeps growing! Assistant Director of Shrine Clubs, Noble Art Kinder and Lady Janet along with our Ambassador, Noble Jim Lindley were in attendance. We were happy to see Noble Dick Newport back with us after back surgery. We had a few members out due to surgeries or health issues. We wish Teresa Braley, Elaine Reiman, Angie Bonner and Louie Sohn speedy recoveries. It’s with deepest sorrow that we report that the Black Camel visited a longtime member, Lady Vivian Snell. Vivian was the wife of Noble Willard Snell of Blue Springs and the mother of current Noble Jim Gargotta. She will be missed by all. Everyone had a great time at the Maverick’s game. The Maverick’s beat the Quad City Mallards. We are also planning our Pancake Breakfast for April 19th at Side Pockets in Blue Springs. We will be having the bucket of booze drawing again, Giggles the Clown, Fez Head Fred, and an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids. We are looking forward to seeing you there. We meet the fourth Monday of each month. The meeting time is 6:30 p.m. in the Lantern Room at the American Legion Post 499 on 7 HWY in Blue Springs. Come join us and be a part of the fun! Give us a call at 816-228-2401 if you’d like to attend, have a free meal on us and see what we are all about.
