Students often question why we celebrate the Cross considering that it was the most miserable punishment in the Roman Empire. We know, however, that the cross is not an end in itself but that Jesus had to die to fulfil the promise to all humanity. On Sunday we celebrate the resurrection – the greatest symbol of God’s love. Throughout Lent we have examined the woundedness of our lives and why our relationship with God has possibly broken down. The joy of Easter, of course, is in the knowledge that, in spite of everything, we are loved by God and we face Easter confident in the promise it holds for us. This week we have journeyed the path of Jesus’ suffering and resurrection through the Stations of the Cross, beautifully prepared by our Year 12 students. On behalf of the staff and students I thank them for helping us to reflect with such prayerfulness. May we all celebrate a happy and holy Easter. As the first term ends, I marvel at the many events and achievements of the past 10 weeks, and thank God for the gift of each member of our College community. Catherine McAuley told her Sisters that ‘if you work in expectation, you will often be disappointed’. Never once have I been disappointed but rather continue to be in awe of the generosity of spirit of so many parents, students and staff and the inspiration of the Sisters. Mrs Carli Sanbrook and Mrs Cynthia Pickering are leaving to have their first baby and we wish them both all the very best. Mrs Paula Campos and Mrs Kathleen O’Toole begin their long service leave, returning to us in Term 3. Mrs Jenny Porter will also be on leave for Term 2. We welcome Mrs Chris Aldous (RE and Christian Service Learning), Ms Lisa McBride (drama coordinator) and Mr Anthony Lionetti (History, S&E and RE). We also welcome back Mrs Philippa Hunt (English) for Term 2 and thank Mr Peter Sharpe for taking on the head of the English learning area for second term. I hope that many of you came along to the College to enjoy the Year 12 Play, Dead White Males, by David Williamson. The girls did a wonderful job under the direction of Mrs Carli Sanbrook. Well done girls. On Tuesday last we had the wonderful musical evening featuring the House Choirs, the Junior and Select Choirs and the Madrigals. It was a pleasure to be there and to see the girls embrace and welcome the members of the Spirit of the Streets Choir, who are always such an inspiration. Thank you. From the beginning of term 2 we are introducing the Future Problem Solving Program to some of our outstanding achievers in Year 7 and Year 8. The program began in 1974 when Dr Paul Torrance was invited to work with a group of gifted students in Georgia, USA. It compels students to think more creatively and positively about issues, develop an active interest in the future, think critically and analytically, learn about complex societal issues, develop research skills and apply knowledge towards the generation of new ideas. The program features several curricular as well as co-curricular opportunities to engage students in problem solving and is affiliated with other international programs. Fourteen Year 7 and twelve Year 8 students have been invited to participate and have already been through a rigorous selection process. I thank sincerely Mrs Sabrina Hughes, Mrs Arletta Ralph and Ms Yvette Elliott for spearheading the program and wish the girls well. I wish all the students and staff a restful and enjoyable break. Thank you again for your generous giving. Safe travel if you are going away on holidays and I will look forward to seeing you all again at the end of April, refreshed and reenergized. Our next social activity with Trinity will be our Academy Awards Social in term 3. It’s hard to believe that your daughters have completed one term already and I have to say that overall the transition was a good one for most of them. Next term the students have their first ‘social’ with the Trinity College boys during the first week back on Thursday 30 April. We will be walking the girls to Wellington Square where they will have a picnic with the boys. A letter has been sent to you regarding the details of this small excursion. We are busy this week finishing off Easter activities and finalising our projects and contributions to Project Compassion. Everyone is looking forward to the big Dodgeball competition on Wednesday and regardless of the outcome of the game the winner will be Caritas. Homerooms have also been asked to bring in contributions for the Fete and if your daughter has not yet done so this may be done at the start of next term. I am looking forward to seeing many wonderful cakes and biscuits on fete day also. There are many fete related Christian Service hours and activities available for girls who need to pick up some hours. I would like to congratulate the following girls for their caring behaviour and for being nominated as Homeroom Heroes for the last fortnight. Maddison Krause Lauren Canning Macy Gregson 7.1 7.2 7.3 On Wednesday morning the Year 10s will be given a quick tour of Mercedes Village and the girls will be shown the rooms they will occupy next term. We are all very excited about this and it will make the start of term two very special. Finally, the Year 7 Pastoral Care staff and myself wish you and your families a very blessed and peace-filled Easter. YEAR 8 NEWS - Mrs Margaret Ancliffe A few girls need to make alterations to their hair during the holidays and I ask that everyone checks the size and length of their winter uniform so each girl will be able to make a smooth transition into the winter uniform on the due date. Wishing you all a happy and healthy Easter. The girls have reached the end of their first term and they can all be very proud of their efforts and achievements. They responded well to the guest speaker from Public Transport who came and spoke to them during Pastoral Care about the correct and safe way to travel on public transport. They asked sensible and mature questions when it came to question time. YEAR 11 NEWS - Mrs Marianne Morphett It has been an eventful first term for the Year 11 girls and they are to be commended on their involvement in many aspects of school life. Congratulations to the girls who represented the College at the recent interschool swimming carnival; they did extremely well! Special praise for the excellent behavior shown by the girls from 8.1, 8.4 and 8.5 who came along as spectators. They looked fantastic in their summer uniforms and were wonderful ambassadors for the College. The river cruise with Trinity College last week provided a relaxing social occasion with which to conclude the term. Early next term we will have our first informal gathering with the Year 8s from Trinity. We plan to have a picnic lunch and some introductory games during our PC period. Girls will be required to be in their winter uniform next term. An exception to this will be our photo day on Monday 4 May when the College has decided to photograph Years 7 and 8 in their full summer uniform with their blazer. A reminder for this will be given to the girls during week one. YEAR 9 NEWS - Mrs Sherrin Adams It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of term already! Most of the girls are showing a pleasing growth in maturity and can be very proud of the efforts they have made over the term. The interim reports for most of the girls are very pleasing. Next term is, of course, most exciting with dancing starting in week one and the social in week nine. All parents should have received a final letter concerning dancing groups. I wish all Year 9 families and the Pastoral Care team a happy and holy Easter. I hope to see all of the girls back fit and well next term. Congratulations to Pegah Safdel (11.7) who acted as an ambassador for CARAD (Coalition for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees) at Presbyterian Ladies College. Pegah shared her experiences with the students and was presented with hundreds of books donated by PLC families to assist in the language and education programmes run by CARAD. We wish the girls and their families a happy Easter and hope they have a refreshing break. YEAR 12 NEWS - Ms Bernadette Dell The girls have been giving some serious thought to life beyond school after an address from our Careers Counsellors. They have been invited to complete a sheet that outlines their career interests so that our Career Counsellors can assist our students with appropriate information for the training options and occupations that are most suitable for each girl. In addition, any student who has queries about entrance requirements to institutions, special programs or post-school employment is welcome to make an appointment with the counsellors and receive direct personal advice. The Leavers’ jackets arrived on Monday and the girls showed great stamina in keeping them on in the hot weather but all students need to remember that the jackets are casual and sporting wear, and must not be worn again with their formal uniform. They will be able to wear it as an alternative to the sports jacket and to events such as the frog jog, athletics carnivals, Mercy Day and out of school. I hope all students have a relaxing break to reinvigorate themselves for a very busy term that lies ahead. This is also an ideal time to catch up on reading or tidying up notes or similar tasks that many students let slip as more pressing course requirements take over. It is always reassuring starting a term well prepared to face the tasks ahead. This is a private business that provides courses in study skills. They will provide two sessions (April 23 & 24) at Mercedes during the forthcoming school holidays to any student who requires further skills as outlined in the flyer. There will be separate sessions for senior and junior students. All enquiries and registrations must be done directly through Improved Communication Skills. Mr C Cole , Deputy Principal Gospel Challenge 12 April—Easter Sunday—John 20:1-9. The Gospel describes the surprise and excitement of Mary of Magdala and the disciples who discovered that the tomb was empty. 19 April—Second Sunday of Easter. (Sunday of Divine Mercy)—John 20:19-31. The Gospel describes how the risen Jesus gave the task of continuing his work to his disciples. Salvation Army Workshop On Thursday 12 March Grace Gatt-Lodding (10.1), Georgia Cowan (10.2), Sicora Ostle (10.3), Arielle Koenig-Luck (10.4) and Jacinta Cowan (10.5) were selected to represent the school in the Salvation Army Beyond the Classroom workshop at the Rivervale Centre. We participated in many activities including a quiz on the Salvation Army (did you know that they invented the doughnut?) and listening to volunteers and how they came to be involved with the charity. We dressed up and played the roles of people in our society and learnt about how people shun the marginalised. Through playing this game we not only realised how generous and selfless people of the community can be, but also that there are always people available to help, regardless of who you are. We met many people from different schools and some with whom we still keep in contact. We all had a fantastic day and encourage everyone to get involved with the Salvation Army. Year 12 Service Hours—URGENT Year 12 students who require more service hours please see Mrs Stacey at Student Services during lunch times to sign up for service opportunities during the holidays. These are opportunities to complete some, if not all your hours. It is imperative that service hours are completed as soon as possible. Mrs Margaret Ryan Distribution of Fete Flyers Students from all years will participate in the distribution of fete flyers as part of their contribution to the Mercedes College Fete. On Wednesday 29 April students from different year groups will be transported around various streets in Perth and surrounding suburbs to distribute fete flyers. We anticipate this to take approximately 50 mins (equivalent to one class period). Students will be accompanied by a teacher and will be supervised. If you do not wish your daughter to participate in this activity, which will benefit the College fete, please email Mrs Stacey at the College on [email protected]. If no response is received by Wednesday 29 April we will assume that you are happy for your daughter to help with the distribution of fete flyers. MAJOR FETE RAFFLE If you have sold your raffle tickets, please return the butts and proceeds as soon as possible. You have until Friday 1 May. Hurry, time is running out for you to sell, sell, sell your tickets. Unsold tickets must be returned by Wednesday 29 April. If you have lost your tickets, please provide a letter stating this as all books must be accounted for. Rhythmic Gymnastics News Mercedes has achieved some fantastic results from their first competition this year. The judges’ invitational held a couple of weekends ago was extremely successful for our club. Congratulations to all our gymnasts who competed in two apparatus each in this competition. The fantastic results were: Level 7 Junior - Gemma Mulholland-6th apparatus 1 (freehand), 3rd apparatus 2 (hoop) and 3rd overall (bronze medallist). Level 7 Senior - Sarah Marshman-3rd apparatus 1 (Ball), 3rd apparatus 2 (Hoop) and 3rd overall (bronze Medallist); Jessica Burns-1st apparatus 1 (hoop), 2nd apparatus 2 (clubs) and 2nd overall (silver medallist); Daniella Sicari-2nd apparatus 1 (ball), 1st apparatus 2 (rope) and 1st overall (gold medallist). Level 5 - Tansy Barr– and apparatus 1 (freehand), 2nd apparatus 2 (hoop) and 2nd overall (silver medallist). Tansy also competed in the level 5 SAT (badge testing) and passed with flying colours. Level 4 - Siobhan Brewster-1st apparatus 1 (rope), 1st overall (gold medallist); Ghislaine Brewster-2nd Apparatus 1 (rope), 2nd overall (silver medallist). Thanks to our judges Barbara, Wendy and Kristin. We know it was a big job and we all really appreciate your efforts. New members to the gym club are always welcome to come and try out Tuesdays in the Hall. Please note that training times for Term 2 for beginner gymnasts is Monday and Tuesday 3.30-5.00pm. Sharing stories helps give students a bright future 50th Jubilee Celebrations at Holy Rosary School Doubleview Pegah at PLC Last week Year 11 student Pegah Safdel visited PLC to share her experiences of coming to Australia as a refugee. After sharing her experiences with students, Pegah was presented with hundreds of books donated by PLC families. The books will be distributed through CARAD (Coalition for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees) to assist refugee children, much like Pegah, with their education and language skills. COMPASSION * EXCELLENCE * Mrs Therese Temby will address the Holy Rosary Parish and school community on the topic of the history of Catholic Education in Western Australia and its relationship to the Church. Mrs Temby is eminently qualified to talk on this topic having been the parent of children who attended Holy Rosary, a member of the teaching staff, the former Director of Catholic Education in Western Australia and the current Chair of the National Catholic Education Commission. All members and friends of our community are invited to attend the hour long talk at Our Lady of The Rosary Church on Sunday 3 May at 2.00pm and will be followed by afternoon tea in the parish hall. This is a great opportunity to hear from one of the most influential leaders in Catholic Education in recent times. As Mrs Temby is generously donating her time there is no charge to attend. JUSTICE * INTEGRITY * SERVICE COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD SPORTS NEWS MUSIC NEWS Interschool Softball Last Friday the Mercedes College softball team played in a round-robin competition at Mirrabooka Softball Centre. The girls played extremely well and ended up coming third on the day. Congratulations must go to Mary-Grace Espeleta and Samantha Jackson for their fantastic pitching and to Hayley Cogan for her two home runs. Also, a special thank you to Hayley for her leadership as captain of the team on the day and at the training sessions. Congratulations to Hayley Cogan for making the School Sport Interstate Softball Championships team which will be held in Adelaide in May. Little Athletics State Championships Congratulations to Francesca Da Rui (10.3) and Jessica Pillera (10.1) who were nominated for Athlete of the Year. This award is given to the top performing athlete in the Little Athletics State Championships. Francesca took out the award and will be competing for the state in the multi event championship, which will be held in Adelaide during these holidays. Jessica will be representing the state at an athletics competition in Kuala Lumpur during the July holidays. Congratulations also to Vincion Geneste (10.2) who received the Sportsmanship award at the Little Athletics State Championships. The concert was a huge success – we had a full hall with an audience of over 300 people! Congratulations also to the House Choirs. McDonald won the competition with their beautiful and emotional version of Tears in Heaven. Frayne was awarded second place with an upbeat Hail Holy Queen from Sister Act. The girls spoke at length about books they had read, including last month’s book club offerings, over afternoon tea. Mrs Daniel then previewed this month’s books to the girls and they selected the ones they wanted to read. The girls chose their favourite book to write a review on. The gathering finished at 4.45pm. Our next Book Club meeting is Monday 11 May 2009 (week 3). Girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 wishing to join Book Club should come to the library for a ‘permission to stay after school’ note. Ten girls discussed why they write, what they write about and when they write. One student read a poem she had composed and several students outlined stories they are in the process of writing. Next term the meetings will move from Thursdays to a yet to be confirmed day to accommodate the Year 9 students. Any student wishing to join the Writers’ Club should see the library staff for a ‘permission to stay after school’ note. Rebel Boylan (8.4), Jessica Joe (8.2), Regina Yap (8.2) and Grace O’Neill (11.5) all presented entertaining and informative speeches and drew compliments from the judges. Although none of the girls were heat winners, we are proud of their efforts and they have learned some new skills from this challenging experience. Bernadette Dell, Public Speaking Coordinator JUSTICE * INTEGRITY * SERVICE COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD Interhouse Chess Championship Have Sum Fun Competition The girls who competed in the Interhouse Chess Championship played extremely well and were dedicated to continuing the competition over a number of lunch times. The “Have Sum Fun” junior and senior competitions were held at St Hilda’s on Friday 3 April and Friday 27 March respectively. Despite not being in the top place-getters, our girls certainly did have sum fun. Congratulations to Ainslie Lavers 9.4 (McDonald champion) for winning the Interhouse Chess Championship. Well done to Chelsea Fruhwirth 11.5 (Frayne Champion) who played skilfully. The other House Champions include Kimberlee Baldry 9.2 (McAuley Champion) and Theresa Pham 9.4 (Serisier Champion). All the girls who played in the games showed good strategies and determination during the competition. Mrs Margaret Ryan Mothers’ Day Fair Trade Stall Congratulations and thank you to the Young Mercies and other students who helped in the organisation of the Mothers’ Day Fair Trade Stall held last week. Over $1300 was raised for Fair Go Trading and the Trading Circle run by the Good Shepherd Sisters. Mrs Margaret Ryan, Student Mission Leader Wintercamp Youth with a Mission will run a camp for 12 to 18 years olds at Forest Edge Recreation Camp, Waroona from 6-10 July. Mr Peter Mee, Head of Mathematics Transition to the Winter Uniform and Photo Days There will be an extra photo day to cater for Year 7 and 8 Homeroom photos on the morning of Monday 4 May. These students will be in the summer uniform with blazer. All other homeroom photos will be taken on Friday 8 May when all students will be in full winter uniform. Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 students may commence wearing the winter uniform on Tuesday 5 May. Please consult the Information Handbook for winter uniform requirements. Sports photos will be taken on Monday 11 May. Students who are involved in the sports photos may wear the sports uniform to/from school on that day. This includes the full track suit, white sport shirt and correct sport shoes. Students will be advised by their sport coaches about any specific uniform for the photo. You may use the entry forms available in the library and then place your entries in the box in the library by Tuesday of Week 1, Term 2. Year 7 Confirmation In accordance with the Archbishop’s request that all children be confirmed in their own parishes, details of the Confirmation Programme for this year at St Joseph’s Subiaco are as follows:. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated at St Joseph’s Church on Sunday 29 November 2009 at 12 noon. Parents of children who belong to St Joseph’s Parish Subiaco will need to contact the parish office on 9381 0400 during office hours to register their child for this sacrament. There will be four classes that they will be required to attend and these will commence on Tuesday 3 November from 4.15pm to 5.15pm. Parents’ attendance during these classes is essential. Details of Baptism and other Sacraments received should be brought to one of these meetings, preferably at the first meeting. More information can be obtained by contacting Ms Melissa Elpitella at the College or em ailing [email protected] COMPASSION * EXCELLENCE * Special examination arrangements exist for students who have temporary or permanent disabilities, medical issues, and/or specific learning disabilities that could disadvantage them in timed assessments. Mercedes College undertakes to ensure that these students are catered for in an appropriate way and in accordance with Curriculum Council guidelines. Special examination arrangements may include (but are not limited to) any of the following: extra working time extra non-working time use of Lap Tops or PCs use of a scribe special supervision Mrs Lynn Jacobs, the Deputy Principal (Curriculum), must approve any special examination arrangements prior to their implementation. The program involves 110 hours of structured work placements in an acute hospital and an aged care setting in addition to studying four units of competency towards a Certificate III in Aged Care work. Most of the program is completed during school holidays. Any Year 11 student who is currently studying at least FOUR subjects or courses of study that will lead to a WACE examination and potential TER in Year 12 (minimum English 1c1d) is eligible to apply for entry to the program. The application process is competitive and involves a written application and an interview. Successful applicants in Year 12 will be offered direct entry to Curtin University’s Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree, WITHOUT the need to receive a TER.
