South House Newsletter
Summer Term 2013
As per usual, this term has been extremely busy with plenty of activities, fixtures and events involving all the girls of South House. Obviously, exams have dominated the minds of the Upper 5th, Lower 6th and Upper 6th. However, we have still managed to: sleep out in a box, run around the track a few times, play some tennis, have everyone involved in House Swimming, hit a few golf balls and perform in a couple of concerts! As we say goodbye to the end of this academic year, we also say goodbye to our wonderful Upper 6th who have made this a truly memorable year! Head Of House
Even though the summer term is the shortest term in the school year, it is always by far the busiest. South, however, has really pulled through and been such a great, supportive community during the exam period. It is so strange though that a whole year has gone by... I feel that I have only just started getting used to being Head of House and all of a sudden it is all over. But I know that you guys will all have an amazing time with next year’s UVIth as I can't think of a better group of girls to leave South House with. Although it is a big bye bye from me and everyone else leaving this year, I hope that you make the most of your time at Cranleigh. Yea I am sure you all wish you were somewhere else, but trust me when I say that I couldn't have wished for a better 4 years. Those of you who really throw yourselves into work, extra‐
curricular, sports, drama and everything that the school has to offer will be the ones who have a good time. So enjoy it, and keep up the singing in chapel. Have a great summer! Lots of love, Imara x House Tennis — Ellie Sutherland
House Rounders
— Gaby Gerrard and Clemmie Ryder-Smith
Of course House Rounders is an extremely important event in our busy agendas that both houses strive to win! Our junior teams went out with skill and aggression, backed up with Mrs Frett's competitive motivation, to (of course) return with gold! Our under 15 teams hit with style and bowled with speed, having Eva Solt, Laura Izon and Phoebe Osborn gaining us rounder after rounder with superb hitting. The cheering and support we gained carried us through to win both matches with the score of 13‐11 for the A's and 10‐6 for the B's. The U14s conveyed true house spirit, also trying their hardest to please their ruthless housemistress! Unfortunately the A team narrowly lost, however the B team comrades picked up the score for them by thrashing West 11‐5. House tennis this year was more eventful than usual with the added challenges of howling gales and torrential rain. With our famous house spirit, the team consisting of Beth Andrew, Maisie La Costa, Ellie Sutherland, Alice Eamey, Poppy Bathurst, Katie Bowser, Louisa Richards, Claudia Berry, Holly Gluning and Sophie Lewis stepped out onto the puddle‐filled courts with enthusiasm and humour. Unfortunately, these qualities could not quite stand up to the mighty West team, resulting in a rather convincing loss alongside the numb hands and hail‐
battered legs. Special mention must go to Poppy and Katie who played outstandingly well against an extremely strong West pair in the second match. Well played to every‐
one involved, and better luck next year! Frodo’s section
Some of the more observant among you may have noticed that I have not been quite so visible in the house this term. This is because Mr. and Mrs. Frett in their wisdom have decided I should be retired from public service. I ask you: Mrs Frett’s getting on, but if I dared point that out I would be evicted. Anyway what about the Queen and Prince Philip? They are 86 and 92 respectively and still going strong. In human years I am 77 ‐ a mere spring chicken. I can tell you this: I still have it in me to search/sniff out food in the most unlikely of places and track it down. Don't think a gate is going to stop me. Actually, it has, although the sight of Mrs Frett trying to climb over the gate in a skirt did amuse me. I have to confess to missing you all. As they say, if you can't bring the mountain to Mohammad ... Please come and see me. I miss your squeals, tears and hysteria. I am also still available for walks and will promise not to divulge your secrets. Big hugs. The man of the House (in age and wisdom!!). Mrs Frett’s Column
Here’s a question I often ask myself: Why does there seem to be no limit to the Southies’ abilities, sense of purpose, drive, innovativeness and general brilliance? House bouldering ‐ that’s a new one, but yet again shows the diversity that is amongst this phenomenal group of individuals. … And so to sum up this term ‐ I feel as though I am a broken record and yet I know I am not alone when I marvel at how fast this year has gone. When the 4th form arrived, I was DEFINITELY taller than most of them, and yet suddenly they have shot up in height and confidence. It felt like yesterday that last June I was having my first prefect meeting with Imara and Ellie S, and yet here I am having just appointed my new prefect team, have had our first meeting and have set the stage for a new academic year. However, this term is about reflecting and saying goodbye. Reflecting on what an amazing group of girls I have in my care. Reflecting on some highlights: Sleep in a box ‐ our charity initiative, where 89 of us slept in school corridors ‐ I use the word ‘slept’ loosely as I'm not sure exactly how many minutes I slept between being trodden on/woken up to sleep shouting (I kid you not!). Busking in the Middle CR and being blown away by the talent and courage of the 4th Form standing up and singing. Raising over £5000. Socials ‐ those informal cups of tea; sitting in my snug with various cookies being passed round and putting the world to rights. Whole year group socials which usually end up in a bun fight. My L5th take 1st prize for singing a medley of unforgettable songs with varying degrees of tunefulness. Sport ‐ loving the competitive spirit as we took on West for house tennis, house athletics, house rounders, and perhaps the most memorable ‐ house swimming. In a rash moment I promised my Upper 6th that if we won (I repeat “IF we won” and that doesn’t mean 2nd place!) they could throw me in the pool ‐ I felt safe, as in South memory this had not yet happened. Even before the results were out I was being edged towards the pool, and the rest, as they say, is history. Exams ‐ the top three years were a credit to you and South by their energies towards the seemingly endless revision. Bravo to the U5th for being calm, focused and good natured. Extra‐curricular ‐ clearly there has been drama (the junior musical was fabulous and showed up a new batch of talent in the Southies). There has been music galore to feast your ears on ‐ wrapping up the Helen Wareham competition with a grand finale. TGI Wednesdays with the imaginative, creative and gifted Miss Sturdee … and more. L6th ‐ what a leadership team they are going to be in September. Head of House —Jess Worpole, Deputy ‐ Cecile Zoet, 4th Form prefects ‐ Phoebe Bagge, Georgia Beaumont, Hatts McKenna and Tish Montgomerie, Matrons’ prefect ‐ Maisie La Costa, and Peer Mentors ‐ Hattie Allison, Anna Forrester and Lara Hobson. But now I must pay a final tribute to my wonderfully vibrant, energetic, loud, memorable Upper 6th. Thank you to Imara and Ellie S who have led the house with such wisdom and house spirit; thank you to Em Robinson for being such an inspira‐
tional leader in the school. Thank you to my 4th Form prefects, charity prefect and all of you for leading our house forward with such passion and humour. We will miss you. Stay in touch. We also say farewell to Mr Bartlett and Mrs Delliere who are being posted to other houses, and good luck to Mrs Thomson who is having her first baby. Thank you as always to the extraordinarily talented Miss Greenwood and Miss Sturdee who make me laugh, keep me sane, fill in the blanks and make this place buzz. Thank you to Claire and Kim (who has just completed her first year with us and is already part of the furniture!)
‐ you are fabulous matrons and the glue that holds us all together. Thank you for my superb tutor team and for the care and attention they lavish on their tutees. Thank you for the cleaners who do an extraordinary job in making this house of 109 girls look as though no‐one is here! Thank you finally to my long suffering husband Dan who never knows when he is going to be called on to pour wine, make tea, talk to girls who are sad, fire up the BBQ and a thousand other jobs. Have a great summer. Take care. God bless. Mrs Frett x P.S. Recommended book this summer for all girls: ‘Lean In’ by Sheryl Sandberg. Sleep In A Box - Miss Sturdee
South’s idea for a charity fundraiser this year was arguably its most ambitious yet: getting the whole house to be sponsored to sleep out overnight on Saturday 27th April to raise money for the youth homelessness charity Centrepoint. The event was a great celebration of House Spirit, with the evening kicking off with a fun swim, a BBQ, a slot for ‘South Unplugged’ (with girls across all the years performing), and then a swim. In the end, 84 girls, plus Mrs Frett, Miss Greenwood, Miss Sturdee and Claire bedded down in sleeping bags and on cardboard boxes around the main school quad to brave the cold night. Amazingly, most of us got a pretty good night’s sleep! It was pretty special to see the house all getting stuck in for this unique event, and it really was a sign of the fantastic commitment and generosity that the girls had for this cause that they were prepared to voluntarily sleep ‘rough’ for one night to raise money for those who don’t have a choice about doing that every night. Along with the sale of our charity T‐shirts, over £5000 was raised! The money was split between Centrepoint and Beyond Ourselves.
House Swimming - Katie
Batchelor
Although we were not the overall winners, South managed to win the junior and senior events with outstanding times and records set! There was a great atmosphere during the event, and despite the conditional agreement that Mrs Frett would be in the pool if we won, we managed to get her in anyway! Well done to those who took part ‐ only a narrow loss to West! House Athletics —Jessie Lenton
House Badminton– Isie Marcar
On Thursday 9th May, the houses House Badminton was definitely a highlight of the term. The team consisting of Lara competed against each other in the Hobson and myself, Georgia Beaumont and yearly House Athletics day. It was a Hatts McKenna, and Kate McGovern and Ella very cold and windy day, but South Gurdon. South were victorious in this event house did very well, and managed which was pretty clear from the beginning, to win the Senior section by just a and we definitely showed our true talents few points. Unfortunately we lost to at the sport. Well done to everyone. I hope West in the Inter and Junior next year will be the same sections, meaning the overall for the badminton winner was West. Even so, we had a very enjoyable afternoon supporting enthusiasts! our house. Duke Of Edinburgh Gold - Louisa Richards
Encore Concert – Phoebe Bagge
On 10th June, 4 members of LVIth South (Anna Forrester, Louisa Richards, Jessie Lenton and Amy Craig‐Wood) went to mid‐west Wales on a four‐day expedition for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh. Known as “the doomed group” from the start, having suffered appalling weather for both their previous Bronze and Silver expeditions, the weather lived up to expectations raining most days. Despite the tough terrain, sore feet, and heavy backpacks everyone remained positive throughout. It was quite a challenge but overall a good learning experience as we really improved our navigation skills and learnt how to “wild camp”. The “encore” ‘Helen Wareham Winners’ concert was held on the 17th of May, after three musicians per section had previously competed to win out of the five divisions. Our very own Phoebe Bagge won the singing section and sang ‘Where have the actors gone’ by Morten Lauridsen. The night was full of extremely talented musicians, and exceptional performances were done by all competitors, with a special mention to Terri Yoon who, at the Headmaster’s request, played a beautiful piano piece. Overall it was a fabulous evening of music.. A big well done to all. House Cricket – Hattie Allison
This year we had quite an inexperienced team for the house cricket match, including 8 members of the fourth form. Despite this, we put up a good fight, batting first and scoring a reasonable total. Then, in the field, our opening bowlers of Eva Solt and Katie Bowser performed well, with good support from the fourth form, in particular Gabriella Hodge. In the end, we didn’t quite put enough on the board to prevent the West run chase, but we did have an excellent time, which was definitely helped by the lovely weather. DW 2013 - Tish Montgomerie
This year’s DW consisted of 5 South House members: Imara Gluning, Abby Doherty and Kitty Cahill, Tish Montgomerie and Hatts McKenna, and Georgia Beaumont and Phoebe Bagge. Every year the team selected go through the same gruelling training period over the Lent Term in order to prepare them for the massive 125 mile canoe race that starts in Wiltshire and finishes at Westminster Bridge over the course of 4 days. The weather conditions this year had been the worst recorded for over 50 years, making the overall task even harder than anticipated. Well done to every South girl that competed and completed the race, and good luck to those in the future who are crazy enough to take on the challenge! Charlie Johnson’s Horse
Charlie Johnson, a member of the L5th in South, created this horse sculpture made of oak this year, which is now being displayed outside the Emms Centre. Studying the anatomy of horses, she went to great lengths to ensure it was as realistic as possible, and even practised by painting a skeleton onto her own horse before she started to build this sculpture. Of her own work Charlie says: “The idea was to give the viewer an insight into how I feel connected to horses. The strong interlocking branches hint at a flow of energy which reflects the powerful yet gentle nature of horses. I hope the viewer may participate in my world by making their own connections to the piece.” Junior Musical — Maddie Lock
The Junior Musical was a great success with 6 members of South taking part in it: Ella Batham‐
Read, Maddie Lock, Abi Lord, Libby Richards, Amy Slade and Jemima Stephenson. ‘By Jeeves’ was a play filled with energy and was a lot of fun for those involved . There was loads of great acting, singing and dancing, and altogether it was a show to be remembered.

House Golf — Abi Lord
Junior House golf was a huge highlight of the year ranging from intermediates and beginners. It was a lot of fun, with Miss Greenwood supporting us on every hole. It came very close between South and West, but everyone played an amazing round of golf and it was a beautiful day. Thank you to :
Our matrons Kim and Claire ‐ we could not have made it through this year without you! Also to our wonderful cleaners, we hope that everyone has a relaxing summer x The aim of the school’s Facebook page is to keep in touch with parents, ex‐parents, Old Cranleighans and supporters of Cranleigh – it is part of our drive to make contact with as many people as we can in the run‐up to the 150th celebrations and the launch of the Foundation being able to raise some funds. To find the new facebook page type in Cranleigh School in the Facebook search box.
