DVB-RCS VSAT Hubs
Advantech Satellite Networks, a world leader in satellite communications, offers the world’s leading, two-way, open standard (DVB-RCS), broadband satellite access system. SatNet’s DVB-RCS
Hub, and in particular its Return Link Sub-System (RLSS), is at the heart of the broadband access system.
SatNet Hubs (including the RLSS) are turn-key
systems which can be installed in days to enable a
wide range of public and/or private network topologies with satellite interactive terminals.
The RLSS from SatNet is a modular hub subsystem which can be integrated with new or installed IP/DVB broadcast platforms and IP switch/
routing equipment to provide two-way satellite
broadband access services.
The RLSS is designed to receive upstream traffic,
handle upstream and downstream signaling,
schedule and control networks of satellite interactive terminals (available from multiple suppliers).
A single scalable RLSS unit can support networks
ranging from just tens to thousands of simultaneously logged-on terminals.
SatNet DVB-RCS Hub Highlights
• Up to 80 Mbps downstream / Up to 6 Mbps upstream per carrier
• Optimized for IP and multi-media content
• Open standard design (DVB-RCS)
• Qualified with multiple IP/DVB broadcast platform vendors
• Interoperable with 3rd party SatLabs certified terminal vendors
• Unique multi-carrier demodulation technology
• World-class scheduling efficiency, maximizing bandwidth utilization
• Always-on
• User-friendly network management system
• Mesh Overlay (peer-to-peer) optional capability
System Costs
Networks of SatNet Hubs and Terminals are highly flexible; several different network architectures are possible. Some key features by the SatNet DVB-RCS Hub include:
•
•
•
•
Frequency independent—hubs, terminals and onboard processors can be operated in any frequency
band (e.g., Ku, Ka, C, or hybrids of these).
Satellite versatility—the system can operate with the forward and return link on the same satellite, or
on different satellites.
Hub diversity— networks can be designed to use a single hub, multiple independent hubs, with
dependent hubs coordinated with a master hub, or with hybrids thereof.
Terminal diversity—networks can support receive-only terminals at the same time as two-way
terminals, as well as both mesh and star topologies of terminals.
SatNet’s entire system, as well as the DVB-RCS standard, has been designed to minimize the cost of
scaling a broadband access network from terminal populations as small as a few tens of terminals to tens
of thousands.
Performance of access layer protocols is highly dependent on traffic profile. SatNet’s implementation of
DVB-RCS, utilizing dynamic assignment techniques mandated in the DVB-RCS specification, has been
specifically designed and tuned for multi-media traffic. In comparison, other VSAT systems are less dynamic and less flexible.

SatNet Pay-as-You-GrowTM
The SatNet Pay-as-You-GrowTM system supports the service provider’s requirements at all stages of a
network deployment. Starting from an SCPC-based network, the Pay-as-You-GrowTM strategy enables the
network operator and service provider to migrate to DVB-RCS while re-using the same user terminal
equipment and forward link equipment. This allows to easily grow the system from a few SCPC terminals
to hundreds of DVB-RCS terminals. Further, the Pay-as-You-GrowTM strategy makes it possible to scale up
a DVB-RCS hub from hundreds of terminals to tens of thousands of terminals.
The SatNet Pay-as-You-GrowTM networks support the full IP application set ranging from web access and
FTP to streaming and interactive end-user applications. Pay-as-You-GrowTM provides a powerful IP access
network and the required infrastructure to support end-to-end IP connectivity.
This solution, starting in DVB-SCPC and upgrading to DVB-RCS, offers a very cost-competitive solution for
any size network. There are several steps possible in the evolution of a network that needs to grow.
•
•
•
1st step—Deploy an SCPC/DVB-S/DVB-S2 network with a small number of terminals.
2nd step—DVB-RCS + SCPC: retain terminal types, add the DVB-RCS specific element (RLSS to hub).
3rd step—DVB-RCS only: retain existing terminals and deploy (additional) DVB-RCS-only terminals.
The DVB-RCS hub and RLSS can be scaled up as the network size grows.
