Applications and computing platforms continue to devour memory, processing power and bandwidth at a relentless pace. Remote users, decentralized facilities and WANs all challenge available networking technologies, particularly when multiple service providers and access technologies must be used to tie everything together. Advantech Satellite Networks, or SatNet in short, offers the world’s leading broadband satellite networking solutions to address these needs and more. SatNet satellite network solutions provide: • Always-on, broadband connectivity for all locations • Cost-effective distribution and sharing of content • Rapid deployment • Reliability and quality of service • Single platform solution for all needs • Flexibility and scalability All this is achieved through the internationally adopted DVB-RCS open standard technology. In fact, it is this DVB-RCS open standard that is allowing SatNet to revolutionize the economics of broadband satellite networking solutions: • Reduced cost per MHz - Designed to support the latest satellite technologies (eg. Ka band, spot beams, turbo codes), and to modularly incorporate the latest technologies (eg. DVB-S2) • Higher throughput of bits per Hz - Offers the world’s most efficient air interface for IP-based multimedia traffic (TCP/IP, UDP, etc) on networks ranging from a few hundred to hundreds of thousands of sites • Continuous price/performance improvements in equipment - The open standard fosters competition that has, for example, driven terminal pricing down by over 75% in just three years. As a result, service providers are today offering broadband access for <US$100 per month and can therefore compete effectively with terrestrial solutions. The Return Link Sub-System (RLSS) is a modular sub-system which can be combined with several new or installed IP/DVB broadcast platforms to provide two-way satellite interactive service. > Open Standard The DVB-RCS Return Link Sub-System (RLSS) is fully compliant with the DVB-RCS open standard. Several terminal manufacturers are providing products compliant with this standard, assuring interoperability. The European Space Agency (ESA) has established the SatLabs Group (satlabs.org), an international, independent, not-for-profit association whose main goal is to ensure the interoperability between DVB-RCS terminals and systems, and to help overcome technical barriers inhibiting low-cost service provision. SatLabs membership is formed by service providers, system integrators, terminal manufacturers and technology providers with an interest in DVB-RCS. SatLabs has formally launched an independent verification facility for interoperability testing, and this facility has certified in Q4 2005 the SatNet terminal to be DVB-RCS compliant and interoperable. SatNet is continuing to participate in on-going Satlabs activities. > Bandwidth on Demand The DVB-RCS Return Link Sub-System (RLSS) is the first commercial satellite system specifically designed for broadband communications. It is optimized for highly asymmetric traffic and multimedia content. The RLSS provides always-on connectivity and bandwidth-on-demand. This optimization and targeted design drives superior performance and maximizes power and bandwidth efficiency, thereby reducing lifetime equipment costs and recurring costs for service providers. > First to Market Over a decade of research and development has gone into the DVB-RCS satellite-based broadband ground equipment. The SatNet DVB-RCS Hub continues to have at least a 12 month lead on potential competitors in the DVB-RCS RLSS business, based on public announcements of competing systems. This lead translates into unparalleled implementation, experience and product maturity. > Modular The DVB-RCS RLSS is designed as an independent system that can be integrated with IP/DVB forward link equipment and network management systems from multiple vendors. The interoperability of the DVB-RCS system has been demonstrated with several IP encapsulators. Service providers can upgrade previously installed one-way systems at minimum cost, or replace their entire system as necessary. SPREAD-singles 3/30/06 2:11 PM Page 5 DVB-RCS Hubs > Scalable In its minimum configuration, the RLSS can support hundreds of terminals, with up to 24 Mbps of return link capacity and up to a full transponder of forward link capacity. The system can, in turn, be scaled to support tens of thousands simultaneously logged-on terminals. Four key elements can be scaled separately to drive equipment configuration: return link capacity, number of terminals supported, number of forward link carriers and redundancy scheme. Each can be scaled simply by inserting additional plug-replaceable compact PCI cards into the RLSS rack. > Performance The SatNet DVB-RCS RLSS is designed to provide inbound bandwidthon-demand up to 4 Mbps for housands of simultaneously logged-on terminals. Mini Hub configurations are also available for more modest capacity requirements. > Network Management A range of network management solutions is available for SatNet hub equipment, both from SatNet and from development partners. Management tools provide fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security (FCAPS) control and monitoring, as well as subscriber management and element management functions for the SatNet RLSS and Hubs. SPREAD-singles 3/30/06 2:11 PM Page 6 > SatNet Technology Licenses In addition to the DVB-RCS two-way, open-standard DVB-RCS satellite interactive terminals, SatNet offers DVB-RCS terminal technology licenses. SatNet recognizes that terminal cost is the single greatest obstacle to mass market commercialization of satellite broadband interactive services. Further, given that DVB-RCS is a recent standard and that SatNet currently has the most mature DVB-RCS RLSS and corresponding terminal indoor unit, SatNet is prepared to both license terminal indoor unit technology and support validation of system-level interoperability. SatNet’s intent in licensing this technology is to foster competition in the terminal market, ensure multiple sources of supply consistent with the DVB-RCS open standard and thereby accelerate cost reduction and economies of scale in DVB-RCS terminals. > End-to-End Systems & Heritage In addition to supporting equipment deliveries, SatNet is uniquely qualified to produce, evaluate or optimize end-to-end systems architectures for satellite broadband interactive services. SatNet has over 40 years of experience in space hardware design for satellite communications, over 20 years of experience in leading-edge MF-TDMA development and over 10 years of experience in multi-media ground equipment development. SatNet pioneered the DVB-RCS open standard for two-way satellite broadband interactive services. SPREAD-singles 3/30/06 2:11 PM Page 7 DVB-RCS Terminals SatNet’s Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITS) provide two-way broadband access to homes and businesses within the satellite footprint and are fully compliant with the DVB-RCS open standard for broadband satellite networks. > Product Options to Fit Customer Needs SatNet currently offers terminals to serve enterprise and professional markets. SatNet complements these terminals with optional point-ofpresence (POP) solutions to tailor the complete terminal solution to each customer’s applications and needs. DVB-SCPC/RCS Terminals SatNet SIT Series 1000 • Software configurable to support SCPC or RCS Return Links DVB-RCS Terminals SatNet SIT Series 2000 • Designed to support a full range of features and performance SatNet SIT Series 3000 • Designed to minimize cost, while maintaining DVB-RCS compliance and performance SatNet SIT Series 4000 • Designed to support both DVB-S and DVB-S2 Satellite Interactive Terminals are designed to standard VSAT industry interfaces and can therefore be configured for use in C/C, Ku/Ku, Ka/Ku, or Ka/Ka band as required. > Leading-Edge Price/Performance DVB-RCS terminals will continue to be first in providing leading edge performance in 2-way broadband systems. As 2Mbps return channel terminals are entering the market, SatNet is already offering 4Mbps return channel terminals. This performance is offered at competitive prices – prices which were unheard of just a year ago. DVB-RCS is uniquely suited to deliver successive generations of satellite broadband access technology at progressively lower prices.
