Union County Parks and Recreation Newsletter January 2013 The Great Backyard Bird Count Saturday, February 16th from 10:00am-12:00pm Join us at Cane Creek Park to help us participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. We will have ranger led nature walks at 10 am and 11am. We will meet at the nature trail outdoor classroom. If we are lucky, we may spot one of the two bald eagles that reside in the park. Beginners and experienced birdwatchers are welcome. Bring your binoculars and identification guides. This is a free event that does not require preregistration. (Regular entrance fees apply.) DID YOU KNOW….. - That Union County Parks and Recreation now offers an Annual Entrance Pass for $40 for Union County residents and $60 for non-residents? It’s true! You can purchase this entrance permit at the Operations Center at Cane Creek Park. It entitles you free entrance to any of our parks when they are open. Just think; this pays for itself in ten trips! WHAT A DEAL!!! - That Cane Creek Park’s Campground is opened all year? True as well! Winter is one of the best times to camp! The air is crisp and the campfire feels better than ever! SO, GRAB YOUR SMORES AND COME ON OUT! FROM DECEMBER-FEBRUARY, CABIN PRICES ARE $30 a NIGHT!! Our staff has been working hard to develop a new nature trail and outdoor classroom for our community. Everyone from school and service groups to a family out for a day in the park will be able to use and benefit from this trail. It’s a great way to celebrate all the natural beauty of the park in an easily accessible way. Our hope is that folks using the trail will not only have fun, but learn something as well. SPOTLIGHT ON JESSE HELMS PARK Jesse Helms Park Soccer Complex opened for public use on July 25, 2009 and is located at 1505 Summerlin Dairy Road, Wingate, NC 28174. The park has the following amenities: (6) full-size “game” soccer fields 25’ x 35’ covered shelter with grill Concession Stand (1) Playground Paved walking trail (approximately 1/2 mile) Restroom facilities Four individual Concrete Picnic Sites 6 -Station Workout Platform We have a camping option for all types of campers! CHECK IT OUT! -Sites with Water, Electric, and Sewer -Sites with Water and Electric Please take the opportunity to drive through our Family Camping Area and see all that we offer for yourself! -Wilderness Tent Sites Please drive slowly through this area and remain in your vehicle. -Horse Camping Sites - Group Tent Sites -Cabins with Heating and Air Conditioning 5301 Cane Creek Rd. RESERVE YOUR SPOT AHEAD OF TIME PICNIC PADS We offer reservable picnic areas that have a concrete pad with a picnic table and grill. These are perfect for a water-front picnic with the family any day of the year. (12 person max.) Need something bigger? Try our: SHELTERS Perfect for family reunions, company picnics, and birthday parties! We offer a variety of sizes and locations to meet your needs! (150 person max for our largest shelters) Need something even bigger? Try our: FESTIVAL AREA AND AMPHITHEATER AT CANE CREEK PARK Weddings, concerts, company outings, and festivals are just some of the things that can be held in our rentable Festival Area. When you reserve this area parking is separate from other park patrons so you truly feel like you have the park to yourself! Our Amphitheater with panoramic views of the lake is a magnificent backdrop for any occasion! Water and electricity are available.
