Holy Sweet Vidalia Onions! It’s May already.
We stored up our winter and spring energy to provide a packed month of activities. We are so excited to
celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and we are having our 9th annual Senior Olympics
kicking off on the 5th at Paupack field on Gumbletown Rd. See your senior center manager for application.
This year we have a special sport kit for those participating.
This also coincides with National Salsa Month with our Cinco de Mayo Menu on May 5th. Robin loves this
time of year. Salsa is low calorie, low salt and delicious. We hope our gardeners produce some nice tomatoes for our harvest in August and September.
With May also being Older Americans Month, we are celebrating with our volunteer luncheon which will be
held on the 6th. Our Volunteers are compassionate and dedicated. Each brings their special touch to our
programs and we are grateful for each and every one.
We have many changes going on at the Agency, not the least of which is our procedures for consumers to
enter into the PDA Waiver. I commend our staff, supervisors, and families for having the perseverance to
get through these challenges. The Agency will be changing roles with regard to enrollment, assessment, and
service coordination procedures all, hopefully to improve access and streamline entry into the program.
You can check out www.dhs.pa.gov to see some of these changes and program updates.
Our Department of Aging’s State Plan on Aging is due for update for the coming year. We, at Pike County
Area Agency will be requesting all of you to fill out our survey of needs. This process allows us to get in
touch with what is working, what is needed, and who needs the services. We will be sending out the link via
email for our electronic readers as well. To take the state survey, go to WWW.Aging.pa.gov or call
717-783-6128.
Our Pet Assistance Grant provided through Meals on Wheels was a huge success. We would like to thank
our community partners for making it work so smoothly. Agway/True Value in Greentown, Westfall
Walmart, Pike County Humane Society, Channel 13, our volunteer HDM drivers and Richard Wilhelm and
Sue VanOrden who kept the program organized and focused. We were able to provide dog and cat food,
veterinary care, adoption assistance, and flea and tick control to over 40 people and 65 pets in the County.
Don’t forget:
Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Healthy Vision Month Low Vision Clinic at Blooming Grove on the 17th of May
May Vegetable of the Month
Vidalia Onions
They are sweeter than cooking onions and can be used a number of ways, high in potassium and very low in sodium,
there are only 60 calories in one ½ cup serving (plain).
Another Baked Vidalia Onion Recipe
1 medium to large Vidalia Onion
Margarine or butter
1 beef bouillon cube
Core out center of Vidalia Onion and fill with butter/margarine and bouillon cube.
Wrap in foil and bake in oven or on grill at 350° for about an hour.
USE CAUTION WHEN OPENING FOIL. Foil will be filled with hot steam.
Enjoy your tender and fresh Baked Vidalia Onion.
Check out Vidalia.com
Here are some of the most popular ways to extend their shelf life once you've purchased them.
*In the refrigerator, wrap separately in paper towels or newspaper. This is a good way to preserve the onions for a
longer time...or
*In the legs of clean sheer pantyhose. Place a Vidalia Onion in the pantyhose, tie a knot then repeat the process until
the leg of the panty hose is full.

Should I Have My Water Tested?
It concerns your health and the health of your family, so you need to
know some basic facts. In addition to illness, a variety of less serious
problems such as taste, color, odor and staining of clothes or fixtures are
signs of possible water quality problems. Other things to think about
include the nearness of your water well to septic systems and the
composition of your home’s plumbing materials.
Regardless of your water source, here are two situations that may require testing:
Do you suspect lead may be in some of your household plumbing materials and water service lines?
Most water systems test for lead as a regular part of water monitoring. These tests give a systemwide picture, but do not reflect conditions at a specific household faucet. If you want to know if your
home’s drinking water contains unsafe levels of lead, have your water tested. Testing is the only way
to confirm if lead is present or absent. Some faucet and pitcher filters can remove lead from drinking
water. If you use a filter to remove lead, be sure you get one that is certified to remove lead by NSF
International. For more information, visit www.epa.gov/safewater/lead, or call the Safe Drinking
Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. Are you considering a home water treatment unit? Find out what
is in your water and what you might want to remove before contacting potential dealers. Be informed
so you can make the right decisions. To help you, please visit: www.epa.gov/safewater/faq/faq.html#
Test water every year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH levels,
especially if you have a new well, or have replaced or repaired pipes, pumps or the well casing. Do
you expect to have a new baby in the household? Test for nitrate in the early months of a
pregnancy, before bringing an infant home, and again during the first six months of the baby’s life. It
is best to test for nitrate during the spring or summer following a rainy period. Do you have taste,
odor and staining issues? Test for sulfate, chloride, iron, manganese, hardness and corrosion, and
every three years. If you suspect other contaminants, test for these also. Have you had a chemical
or fuel spill or leak near your water supply? Test your well for chemical contaminants, such as
volatile organic compounds. Tests can be expensive; limit them to possible problems specific to your
situation.
Often county health departments will help you test for bacteria or nitrates. If not, you can have your
water tested by a state certified laboratory. Laboratories may sometimes send a trained technician
to collect the sample or to analyze the sample directly in you home. Ask if this service is available,
since you may obtain better samples and more reliable test results . You can find one in your area
by calling the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or visiting
www.epa.gov/safewater/labs.
Are you considering a home water treatment unit? Find out what is in your water and what you might
want to remove before contacting potential dealers. Be informed so you can make the right
decisions. To help you, please visit: www.epa.gov/safewater/faq/faq.html#hwtu and
www.epa.gov/safewater/wot.
Please call the Pennsylvania State Cooperative extension office @ 570-296-3400 for testing
information.
Charges may apply.

FREE GRIEF SUPPORT A professional counselor has been added to the staff of AAA to lead the
on-going grief support group, as well as help people one-on-one in all situations. Have you
been feeling sad and depressed over losing a loved one? Doesn’t it seem that you have a hole
in your heart. Your life has been turned upside down. How long will it take to feel better?
Talking helps in this major transition.
Please join us: The 2nd Wednesday of the month at 10:30 in Blooming Grove.
AARP DRIVER SAFETY CLASS
June 1, 2016 @ 1:30
In Blooming Grove
Formerly “55 Alive”, the new SMART DRIVER 4 & 8 hour defensive driving course is designed for qualified
drivers aged 50 and older. There are no tests and membership in AARP is not necessary. All automobile
insurance companies doing business in PA are required by state law to give a minimum discount of 5% to
all qualified policyholders age 55 and over who take the course. The discount is for a minimum of three
years. Always check with your agent to make sure you qualify for the discount. All classes are taught by
trained, unpaid volunteer instructors. The eight hour class is given in two, four hour sessions, and is
required for first timers and those who have not taken the class within the past 36 months. The one-day
four hour class is only open to those who provide evidence of taking the class during the previous 36
months. A $20 fee ($15 for AARP members with membership card) is charged for each class. Class size is
limited, so advance reservations are necessary for placement in any class. Call 570-775-5550. Please bring
your drivers license. Call 1-800-227-4669 or 1-877-866-3299 for other classes and information.
