The first Flag Day was signed into legislation by which President in 1949?
Happy June, wonderful warm tidings to you all,
The month of Summer Solstice, Father’s Day, and Flag Day. It is gardening time
finally. Mother Nature and her frost are a thing of the past. The gardening group
has put together a number of items for this year’s planting. We are looking for some
creative deer proofing ideas as well!
Our Agency is going through some changes with our procedures for enrollment for our PDA Waiver
program, for assessment of consumer for their level of care (necessary for Medicaid funded programs),
Ombudsman Services in our Long term care facilities (Twin Cedars, Milford Senior Care & Rehab, and Belle
Reve) for resolution and conflict free services. The Aging baby boomers have created a need to stream line,
condense, and in some cases, change the way we are doing business to serve the vast majority of need for
home and community based services in our County and across the state.
This month also provides an end to our fiscal year. This means the budget that was delayed is now
commencing already and it seems like only yesterday…. We had the good fortune of gaining additional
funds from another county who couldn’t spend all of the caregiver support funds and another to help with
our transportation funds. So we are proud to leave this fiscal year all paid for and looking forward to serving
consumers in the new fiscal year with these programs such as transportation, consumer reimbursement,
counseling, and personal care and home modifications. Our four year plan survey is out there for all of you
to complete and share your opinions. We use this tool to put the next programs together in the future.
Please take the time to fill this out as completely as possible and also share with your neighbor, Dr., Pastor,
or children. Each as the unique view of aging in place and where the needs are.
If you need an electronic copy log on to www.pikeaaa.org link on Pike County (Four Year) Plan Survey.
Upcoming events: Dingman’s Ferry/Bushkill Picnic at Camp Akenac June 10th 10am to 2pm. Music,
food, games, and plenty of fun. Call for rsvp. Elder Justice Day is June 21st. We have a great line-up of
speakers and information regarding safe guards, resources, and tips to avoid scams, exploitation, and
reporting mechanisms for these situations. We have three criminal cases right now pending charges and
sentencing.
Father’s Day is June 19th. Let’s say thank you to all of our paternal influences out there. My Dad would
have been 100 this year. Though I miss him, I treasure everything he taught me. (even keeping a car on the
road after 200,000 miles) Take the father in your life to lunch, buy him a beer, or just say hello and thanks
Nutrition and The Brain: Check out what Green Tea, Broccoli, and Turmeric have in common
We take it for granted that our body can regenerate cells that become injured or simply wear out and
die. For most of the 20th century, however, scientists were convinced that one organ—the brain—lacked
that ability – Now, recent research at Tufts University is finding amazing results with neurons in the
brain and regenerative properties.
FEED THE BRAIN:
By changing diet and nutrition, patients may be able to limit inflammation of brain tissue and prevent or
even reverse these degenerative diseases by giving neural stem cells
the ability to heal the damage. “All of the bioactive components in
our diet play a role in how cells can battle this tendency to become
inflamed,” says Steindler. In particular, he is experimenting with
three antioxidants, which he suspects may need to be consumed in
higher doses as we age in order to ensure healthy stem cell function—ECGC, found in green tea; curcumin, found in
turmeric; and sulforaphane, found in broccoli, Brussels sprouts and
other vegetables.
