March Greetings,
So many wonderful things happen in March, besides that Easter is early this year and falls on the 27th, and St .Patty’s
Day is the 17th, it is also Nutrition Month!!! Registered Dietitian Day is March 9th. See below for more info on our
activities for the month.
This year as strange as the budget process has been this year, we are able to provide some additional programs for
our Pike County consumers. We now are working with Counselors in the area to provide some mobile visits and head
up our grief support group. Isolation and loneliness are huge areas we battle in our community. If you or someone
you know is in need of these services, please don’t hesitate to call. This year, we are also offering Home Support for
homes to help eliminate falls and accidents in the home. Depending on eligibility, these programs may require a
home visit and a level of care assessment to be able to participate in them.
Our Federal budget for the coming year appears to have some positive news: Administration for Community Living
(ACL), HHS “…..ACL fared relatively well in this year’s budget, with a nearly $2.1 billion proposed budget that reflects
both discretionary and mandatory investments in core Older Americans Act programs”. These funds are directly
coming to the States for our Title III funding of nutrition, protective services, and other vital programs we provide
here in Pike. Good news! Please thank our legislators at the federal level for supporting Older Americans Act Programs.
This issue is our new newsletter editor’s first edition. Give Kathy your feedback or better yet, send her some subjects
you would like us to dive into. She can be reached at [email protected]. She and Linda found much on Scams
this month, unfortunately scammers work faster and harder than authorities can keep up. REMEMBER this simple
anagram; SCAM = STINGY, CHECK, ASK, MAINTAIN.
Healthy Steps is coming again, if you haven’t participated, this program has been proven to reduce falls, help with
compliance for mediation and Dr. visits, and promoted positive changes in health and wellness.
See page 8 for details.
Nutrition:
For National Nutrition Month, The Academy Offers Advice on Reducing Sugar, Sodium and Saturated
Fats to 'Savor the Flavor of Eating Right'
We will be providing information on much of these subjects throughout the month of March. You will be
surprised what you learn about what is in some of the common foods you consume.
MARCH FOR MEALS Our Home delivered meals program provides over 175 people hot, tasty, nutritious
meals to their door each week. That becomes 45,500 meals per year. With just the food service provider costs
that equals $218,400. Last year we took in less than $14,000 in donations. Funding for this program is
limited with Pike receiving less than $24,000 per year from the Nutrition Services Incentive Program (USDA
funds) This is $2,000 less than 2015 fiscal year. So the program is carved out of the remaining Lottery funds
we have and the County support.
Join us this year as we shed some light on this program. Our nutrition volunteers and drivers are fabulous.
They know how important it is to get out in all types of weather for their Meal consumers. Sometimes the
only visitor folks have all day, or even all WEEK! So the campaign kick off is March 2nd and will go all
month. We are hoping to increase volunteer involvement, donations, and hopefully increase the days we are
able to deliver in some regions.
We will be having some local celebrities out helping us “deliver”. Look for raffles, and our festivities in the
coming weeks in the newspaper and on the TV. If you would like to get involved or make a donation, contact
me at [email protected]. Or call Sue at 570-775-5550 ext. 1303.

**ALERT**ALERT**ALERT**ALERT**ALERT**ALERT**
AARP has recently provided information about a new Social Security Scam. According to the report, emails are being sent with the subject line, “Get Protected.” The
body of the email contains information about the Social Security Administration offering new features to help taxpayers protect their personal information and identities. This is a scam that the Federal Trade Commission recently discovered.
Identity Theft
Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information that could be used to
falsely apply for credit or for government benefits. Here are three common ways con
artists steal your identity.
Phishing
Someone contacts you via email and says there is some problem with your bank account and you need to verify the account with a Social Security Number, bank routing number or birth date.
Stealing mail and sensitive documents
Personal information is taken from your trash, your office or from social media websites and used to steal your identity.
Bogus Job Opportunities
Con artists post bogus job offers on various employment websites. The scammer
may use or sell your personal information provided in the job application.
Gold Coin Scam
You hear an ad on the radio that describes how the world economy is shaky and the
only thing you can really rely on during periods of economic uncertainty is precious
metals. You call a toll-free number and are pitched on buying gold and silver coins
that will undoubtedly go up significantly in value. What you are not told is that the
coins are being sold at a 300-500% mark up and you will lose money the minute you
buy them.
Free Lunch
The scammer invites a hundred people to a seminar, where he or she presents an unbeatable investment opportunity. You must sign up right then and there. You can’t
sign up later because he or she is leaving town in two hours, and so will your money.
Oil and Gas Scams
Someone calls and tells you they are drilling for oil off the Gulf Coast or in Mississippi, and they have this great new technology that allows them to find oil where no one
else has ever been able to drill. Ask if the caller is a registered broker and if the investment is registered with the state or the SEC. If not, don’t invest.

PRESENTS HEALTHY STEPS IN MOTION
Please join us for a healthier way of life.
A FREE EXERCISE CLASS FOR SENIORS
Healthy Steps in Motion is an exercise program that incorporates warm-up, balance,
weight resistance, strength training and cool down segments, as its program foundation.
HSIM was designed by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and is offered to older
adults at NO COST. It promotes regular physical activity, which provides many benefits
for older adults. Research has shown that older adults who practice weight resistance
training, improve their balance and coordination which may decrease their risk for falls.
Exercise can also reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancers, increase
bone density, strengthen the heart and lungs, reduce stress and boost energy levels.
Every Tuesday and Thursday ; March 1st, 3rd, 8th, 10th, 15th, 17th,
22nd & 24th at the Blooming Grove Senior Center, 150 Pike County Blvd, Hawley, PA
18428 from 12 to 1:00 pm
Let’s have fun and make new friends.
Remember the class is free!!
Call Lana to register: 570-775-5550
Ext: 1317
Regular exercise helps control blood pressure, bodyweight , and cholesterol levels. It reduces the risks of
hardening of the arteries, heart attack, and stroke. What’s more, exercise strengthens muscles, tendons,
ligaments, and bones to help fight osteoporosis. Keeping your body strong and limber reduces the risk of
injury and allows you to continue to enjoy the kinds of activities you’ve enjoyed your entire life. Staying
healthy will help you maintain your independence.
