News from the Classroom News News from the classroom: This week in science, we have been investigating the properties of materials. We have started to learn about making predictions and used these predictions to test whether the materials were waterproof, flexible, strong and Riordan have been reflecting on Remembrance and why we remember people who have sacrificed themselves for us in wars around the world. We have been focusing on World War One and the conditions that the soldiers found themselves in. Isabella Walter and Ella Davies both brought in details about their great grand-parents and the experiences they had in active service. The children have been very interested to learn about why we went to war and the challenges the soldiers had to face. This week in maths, Year 6 have been exploring the relationship between ratio and fractions. In order to provide context and an additional incentive for this learning, they have been using chocolate to model their investigations. On Monday, we worked on the 'Chocolate Conundrum', which asked children to order fractions and consider what would be there optimum choice amongst a range of different options. By the end of the investigation, several groups had managed to spot a recurring pattern, and used this to make very accurate predictions. Details of the Conundrum are available here: http://nrich.maths.org/34 Then on Tuesday, we explored how fractions link to ratio using multi-coloured chocolates. This was an equally successful session, as children moved on to consider how to work with triple and even sextuple ratios, a word some of them (including Miss Davis) struggled not to snigger at. On Wednesday, Miss Lobo's maths class went on a shape hunt around school to see if we could recognise any 2D shapes in everyday objects. We found many different 2D shapes such as an octagon (the wooden gazebo on the field), pentagons (in the quiet area on the playground), rectangles (the shape of bricks) and triangles (on top of the studio). We all enjoyed going around the school, spotting different shapes and working as a team!
