Rigitone Activ’Air – for a healthy room climate „Clean air, top acoustics, great look – it covers simply everything.“ Marcel Botsch, botsch architects office in Düsseldorf, ensures a healthy learning climate with Rigitone Activ’Air acoustic boards. Rigitone Activ’Air For optimum acoustics and a consistently healthy room climate 2 Rigitone Activ’Air: Good room acoustics, healthy room climate, great design Good room acoustics and healthy air are critically important for people‘s wellbeing. All the more so when you consider that we spend up to 90% of our time in enclosed spaces – whether at home, in the office, at kindergarten or school, in auditoriums or leisure facilities such as sports clubs. While we can clearly perceive good and bad room acoustics, we are often exposed to invisible pollutants, e.g. through vapours from carpets and other floor coverings, paints or adhesives, without realising it. Air pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can impact our wellbeing and significantly damage our health. 60% less formaldehyde Such VOCs, in particular formaldehyde, can be immediately – and most importantly – permanently removed from room air by the new Rigitone Activ’Air acoustic boards. Thanks to their unique active agent, Rigitone Activ’Air boards can permanently reduce formaldehyde by 60%. A lasting effect which consistently ensures very good room air and thus greater wellbeing. And last but not least, the attractive perforation design makes them real eye-catchers. Wherever they are installed. ✓ P ermanently removes 60% of formaldehyde from room air Room climate ✓ E xcellent room acoustics properties Quiet ✓ Jointless ceiling appearance ✓ Wide range of ceiling designs Design freedom with different perforations ✓ S ustainability Sustainability 3 Rigitone Activ’Air – room air cleaning with a patented active agent How Activ’Air works How Activ’Air works Rigitone Activ’Air boards contain a unique organic mineral substance. It can absorb formaldehyde from room air, convert it into harmless, inactive compounds and perma nently bind them in its structure. This ensures a sustainable reduction in formaldehyde without any risk of re-emission. Formaldehyde comes into contact with the board through the normal circulation of air: The board absorbs the pollutants and converts them into inactive compounds which are bound in the structure of the board. 1. Absorbed formaldehyde Proven long-term effect Rigitone Activ’Air is an innovative material with proven performance you can rely on. In a long-term test conducted in accordance with international standards, it was proven that the installation of Rigitone Activ’Air permanently removes 60% of formaldehyde from room air after just a short time and without any risk of re-emission. An import ant contribution to healthy construction which offers greater living comfort and has a long-term positive effect on people‘s wellbeing. Current simulation calculations also prove that Activ’Air boards remain effective for at least 50 years. 2. Conversion of formaldehyde 3. How is the air cleaning power achieved? We have developed Activ’Air to meet the highest air cleaning requirements and already added it to a variety of Rigips products. The active agent is highly effective at absorbing formaldehyde and converting it into stable, harmless compounds. 2. Does the air cleaning power alter the other board properties? No. The low concentration of the active agent in the board ensures that the characteristic properties of Activ’Air boards are not impacted. All structural properties including e.g. robustness, stability, non-combustibility, sound insulation or load-bearing capacity remain unaffected. 3. Is there a rule of thumb for calculating the surface area needed per room to achieve the full air cleaning power effect? Based on the measurements taken at the testing institute, the following estimate can be used to calculate the effectiveness of the Activ’Air board range. The panelled area is critical to the effective ness of the formaldehyde reduction. a. Ceiling = 0.4 – 0.5 m2/m3 = 60 % b. Wall = 0.8 – 1.0 m2/m3 = 70 % c. Wall + ceiling 1.2 – 1.5 m2/m3 = 80 % effects of formaldehyde on people‘s health in many publications. 6. Where can formaldehyde be found? Formaldehyde was frequently used in the manu facture of chipboard and plywood in the past. The elimination of formaldehyde from contaminated buildings is an issue particularly in older pre fabricated wooden houses. Smoking also releases formaldehyde, making a significant contribution to air pollution. Formaldehyde may also be used in the manufacture of pigments, adhesives or disinfectants. 7. What other potential sources exist? Formaldehyde can be found in many materials including a. Furniture, carpets b. Floor coverings and other fittings c. Construction products (e.g. chipboard, impregnated wooden materials, paints and varnishes) 8. What happens to the pollutants? It can absorb formaldehyde from room air, convert it into harmless, inactive compounds and permanently bind them in its structure. 4. Which pollutants have Activ’Air products been proven to reduce? The most well-known harmful VOC was used to prove the long-term pollutant reduction effect: formaldehyde (CH2O). 9. Can the pollutants be released back into the room air? No. The composition of the active agents has been selected to ensure that the pollutant remains bound in the board. This has been proven in tests (so-called desorption tests). 5. What actually is formaldehyde? is a colourless, pungent smelling substance which occurs in gaseous form at room temperature. Certain materials containing formaldehyde can contaminate the air in enclosed rooms by releasing vapours. The WHO refers to the harmful 10. Has the air cleaning power of our boards been verified? The effectiveness of our boards has been confirmed by an independent testing institute (Eurofins in Denmark). All stated concentration data are based on these results. 11 11. Is light necessary for the air cleaning power to work? No. The boards are fully effective even without sunlight. 12. Is there a time limit on the effectiveness of the boards? Simulations in laboratories have calculated that the boards will remain fully effective for at least 50 years. No deterioration in effectiveness is therefore expected within the usual lifetime of drywall structures. 13. Do special instructions have to be followed when installing the boards? No. The processing instructions for Activ’Air products do not differ. 14. Can the board be painted or wallpapered as normal? Yes. If vapour-permeable coatings such as emulsions, plaster or standard wallpapers are applied to the Activ’Air boards with air cleaning power, no significant deterioration in the air cleaning power can be expected. Airtight coatings such as tiles or metal film/vinyl wallpapers reduce the ability of the active agent in the boards to react with the air pollutants to varying degrees. 15. Do special measures need to be taken for subsequent recycling or disposal of the boards? No. The active agent and conversion products remaining in the boards are harmless substances in very low concentrations. The boards can be disposed of as usual in accordance with the valid regulations for plasterboards. 12 People just love to build. Clear and simple. Rigips.
