This booklet highlights many of the services available at The
Brenner Jewish Community Centre at Raine House. These
include a number of activities, ranging from arts and crafts,
discussion groups and entertainment to our community
friendship groups, women-only Pilates and culture club sessions
(pages 6-9).

We offer many support services to the local community. Our
home care service enables older people to remain independent
in their own homes. The Kadimah Centre for Wellbeing (JAMI)
offers care, support and advice for those with mental health
needs (pages 10-11).

You can enjoy a meat meal in our kosher café (under Kedassia
licence), and visit our kosher shop for all your essentials.
Every Friday, join our Shabbat experience lunch for only £6
where there is soup and a roast dinner, plus activities.
Transport is also available (page 4).

FACILITIES
& RESOURCES
The following services are available for the
community.
Kosher Café
Enjoy our kosher café and have a meat lunch
with family and friends.
All food is prepared freshly on site under
Kedassia supervision
Open Monday- Thursday, 12- 1.30pm,
Fridays, 12-1.30pm
Shabbat Experience
Join us every Friday for our Shabbat
experience: lunch, challah and blessings for
only £6. This includes a two-course chicken
kneidlach soup and a roast chicken dinner
plus all the centre’s activities. Transport is
available at a cost of £1.50 each way.
Join our monthly Friday Night Dinners at
AJEX house, for a Shabbat meal service and
candle lighting. Enjoy a three-course roast
dinner and refreshments for £12.

Kosher Shop
Our kosher shop is available at your
convenience for you to purchase all your
essentials. We stock a range of kosher food,
challah, smoked salmon, along with
household essentials such as Shabbat and
memorial candles, simcha cards, and more.
Open Monday-Thursday
10am-12pm, 1-2pm
The Salon
Visit our salon where you can get pampered
by our qualified and trained beauty
therapists and hairdressers. Many services
available including facials, manicures, hair
treatments and chiropodist appointments
are available monthly.
Booking appointments is recommended.
The Library
Relax in a comfy chair and enjoy a selection
of good books in our library. We offer a
lending service for you to borrow the books
at home. The Centre offers creative writing
sessions, book club and workshops. For more

ACTIVITIES
Trips
The centre organises a number of trips
throughout the year, from museum and art
gallery visits, theatre trips, days out at the
seaside to Brick Lane Music Hall and more.
Booking is essential. Look out for the next
trip in the ‘time in’ guide or sign up at the
centre.
Entertainment
Enjoy the sounds of our singers and
entertainers in the main hall and join in
with our sing-along sessions.

Transport
As part of Jewish Care we have our own
modern buses which are able to take
members to and from the centre each day
for only £1.50 each way*. We also arrange
trips to local shopping centres and
supermarkets on our buses. Book transport
with a member of staff.

Themed days
As well as trips, entertainment and activities
we offer many fun themed days and events
in the centre including French Day, South
American Day, mock seders, lighting the
Chanukah candles and blowing the shofar.
Card sessions
Learn how to play the classic card games
such as Kalooki, or practice with friends.

Arts and Crafts
Led by volunteers
Discussion
Led by volunteers, staff and guest speakers
Our fully equipped arts and crafts room has
all the materials you need to be creative.
Enjoy watercolour painting, mosaic,
knitting, tapestry, handcrafts, glass
painting, woodwork and more .
Open Monday - Thursday, 10am- 3pm
Friday until 1.00pm
Join our lively discussion group which
focuses on current topics in the news,
latest films, books, or take a trip down
memory lane.
Monday - Friday, 11am- 12pm
Computer classes
Led by volunteers
If you are interested in learning how to use a
computer, write a letter, shop online, surf the
internet or video chat with family living
abroad, and then why not join our computer
classes? You can book in a group session or
on a one-to-one basis with our volunteers.
We also have many touchscreen computers
and iPads, which makes computing even
easier.

Gentle exercise
Led by qualified staff
Stay active and healthy at our light exercise
classes, which can improve your mind and
wellbeing. We also offer chair-based
exercises, which makes the session even
more enjoyable.

Tuesday and Wednesday, 10.45-11.15am
A selection of games
The Centre has a selection of games for you
to enjoy. Pick up a cue for a game of pool, or
try your luck to beat the banker in Deal or No
Deal. Enjoy a word game, quiz or even take a
shot at our short mat bowls every Friday.

SOCIAL GROUPS
The Brenner Jewish Community Centre
offers many social clubs and friendship
groups, where the community can enjoy a
number of events and activities.
The Hillside Club
This is a lively friendship group for the over
50s who are ‘young at heart ‘. Enjoy guest
speakers, cultural events, trips, quizzes and
activities.

L’Chaim Centre
The L’Chaim group offers a therapeutic
programme for people living with dementia.
The programme is personalised focusing on
remaining independent, keeping active, and
helps to maintain a good quality of life and
enhance wellbeing.

Stay and Play
Stay and Play is our new afternoon session
for day centre members. Enjoy time with
friends and activities including film
screenings, cards and games. Transport is
available* both ways at £1.50.

HOME CARE
Services can include:
■ Personal care – support with washing,
bathing and dressing
■ Support with continence and toileting
needs
■ Support with meal preparations
■ Support with prompting and monitoring
medication
■ Help with essential cleaning, shopping
pension and prescription collection as
part of a full care package
■ Support in preparing Shabbat and high
holy days
■ Respite and sitting service
■ Sleep ins/waking nights
We cover Hackney, Islington, Enfield,
Southgate and Cockfosters. We also have
other teams who cover different areas.
Helping you
Jewish Care homecare service offers the
highest quality of care and can help you to
remain living independently in your own
home. We offer a personal approach and
can accompany you on shopping trips,
theatre trips, appointments and more. Our
home care service can also help with meal
times and light housework.

KADIMAH
The Kadimah Centre for Wellbeing
Kadimah supported by Jami and Jewish
Care, provides care, support and advice for
Jewish people aged 18 and over who are
experiencing problems with their mental
health.
The centre provides a wide range of social
and therapeutic services to support the
individual needs of people leading
towards independence and social
inclusion. The centre offers a recovery
based programmes and services which
people can access based on their
individual needs. Not all services are centre
based.

VOLUNTEER/ MEMBER
Become a volunteer
Volunteers are a vital part of the Jewish Care
team, we couldn’t do what we do without
them. There are over 3000 volunteers who
generously give their time to bring huge
amounts of warmth and a range of skills to
our centres and clubs.
Whether you are in full-time education,
working full or part-time, taking a career
break or are retired, we have a wide range of
volunteering opportunities for you at your
local Jewish Care centre.
New volunteers are always welcomed,
supported and provided with relevant training
and by giving a few hours of your time to help
us, you can make a big difference.

Become a member
Community centre membership costs £24 per
year. Members benefit from a daily reduced
entry fee of £5 (£6 for non members).
As a member you can benefit from all our
facilities, which include:
■ A café offering delicious kosher meals, (under
supervision of the Kedassia), vegetarian
options, snacks, drinks, cakes and desserts.
■
A salon with trained beauty therapists and
hairdressers.
■ Varied afternoon entertainment, showcasing
a range of music, dance and guest speakers.
■
A library to read or relax in.
■
A shop with a wide selection of kosher
products, cards and gifts.
■
A selection of trips throughout the year.
■
Communal celebrations of Jewish festivals.
We also offer a fleet of wheelchair accessible
mini buses, driven by our qualified drivers, to
help you get to and from the centre. This service
can be booked subject to availability and
meeting the criteria, at a cost of £1.50 each way.

The Brenner Jewish Community Centre at
Raine House loves to celebrate all simchas,
from birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and
more.
You can make your simcha extra special by

Friends of Brenner
Michael Rose (treasurer)
Friends of Brenner is a committee which
raise much-needed finds for the centre.
The group hosts many quizzes and social
evenings.

Youth Direct
After school youth programmes for
orthodox boys aged 9-13 to help develop
self confidence and life skills: with a range
of activities on offer.
