Silver Screen is a monthly film programme from access>CINEMA. Matinée
screenings take place one Wednesday afternoon per month. Annual
membership is €5 and tickets are €4 including complimentary tea/coffee before
the screening for members and €5 for non-members.
Jimmy’s Hall
Based on the true story of Jimmy Gralton, and the dance hall he opened
in rural Leitrim at a time when Ireland was on the brink of Civil War. It
was a place where young people could come to learn, to argue, and to
dream, but above all to dance and have fun. Jimmy quickly came to the
attention of the Church and politicians and they forced him to close the
hall.Returning from the U.S. a decade later, Jimmy vows to live the quiet
life. However, as he reintegrates into the community and sees the
poverty, boredom, and growing cultural oppression, he decides to
reopen the abandoned and empty hall, regardless of the opposition and consequences.
Harvey
Elwood P. Dowd (James Stewart) is a wealthy drunk who starts having
visions of a giant rabbit named Harvey. Elwood lives with his sister Veta
(Josephine Hull) and her daughter (Victoria Horne), and Veta worries
that Elwood has gone insane. In the process of trying to have him
committed, Veta admits that she occasionally sees Harvey herself. The
director of the mental home, Dr. Chumley (Cecil Kellaway), tries to
reconcile his duty to help Elwood with his own growing experiences
with Harvey. Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize play loses little of its whimsical
comedy charm in this screen translation starring James Stewart, Josephine Hull and Jesse White.

The 100-Year-Old Man Who
Climbed Out The Window
And Disappeared
Wednesday 11 March
Time: 8pm
Sweden, 2013, Swedish, 114 min, 15A, Dir: Felix Herngren
Allan Karlsson blows up the fox who killed his cat by hiding sticks of
dynamite inside a pack of sausages. Like much of the humour of this film,
it is broad verging on slapstick, but delivered with such deadpan panache
that it’s irresistible. Based on the Swedish bestseller by Jonas Jonasson, it follows the many misadventures past
and present of a man who, a little like Forrest Gump, succeeds in life despite evident drawbacks.
A whirlwind comedy of absurdist humour, zany happenstance and good old slapstick – Rotten Tomatoes
Violette
Wednesday 18 March
Time: 8pm
France/Belgium, 2013, French, 139 min, 15A, Dir: Martin Provost
The trailblazing feminist writer Violette Leduc gets a biopic worthy of her
complex life with Violette. Director Martin Provost (‘Seraphine’) once again casts
his sharp yet sympathetic gaze on an uncompromising woman artist, and once
more he has crafted a plum role that allows a gifted actress (Emmanuelle
Devos) to show the full range of her abilities. Provost hones in on the events in
Leduc’s life that most affected her writing‚ and vice-versa, in six elegant chapters.
Emmanuelle Devos triumphs in this sharply observed yet sympathetic biopic
of a trailblazing feminist author - Variety
Human Capital
Wednesday 22 April
Time: 8pm
Italy, 2014, Italian, 110 min, CLUB, Dir: Paolo Virzi
‘Human Capital’ gives the tired trope of cutting between overlapping
stories a welcome shot of adrenaline, using it not just to compare and
contrast tangentially related stories, but to show how people caught up
in their private dramas can overlook or misinterpret the people around
them—especially those who have less power, whether because of their
gender, their class, their age, or some combination of the three.
The film is extremely well written and intricately constructed, with fine
performances – Rotten Tomatoes

20,000 Days On Earth
Wednesday 29 April
Time: 8pm
UK, 2013, English, 97 min, 15A, Dir: Iain Forsyth, Jane Pollard
Nick Cave has long been one of the most fascinating and enigmatic
figures in the music and film world. ‘20,000 Days on Earth’ enhances his
mystique. This innovative drama/documentary features Cave as both
subject and co-conspirator, intimately documenting his artistic process
and combining it with a fictional staged narrative of his 20,000th day on
Earth. As a result, the film also explores the creative spirit.
Two Days, One Night
Wednesday 13 May
Time: 8pm
Belgium, 2014, French, 95 min, CLUB, Dir: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne
A tense dramatic situation and a subtly magnificent central performance from
Marion Cotillard add up to an outstanding new film from the Dardenne brothers:
impassioned, exciting and moving – a Twelve Angry Men of the 21st-century
workplace. Cotillard plays Sandra, a married woman with children who returns to
work at a solar panel factory after a breakdown, only to find that the management
have effectively made her the sacrificial victim to the rest of the staff.
It’s a rare film of unforced simplicity that will stick with you for a long time - Empire
Finding Vivian Maier
Wednesday 20 May
Time: 8pm
USA, 2013, English, 83 min, 12A, Dir: John Maloof, Charlie Siskel
The incredible artistry of nanny and closet street photographer Vivian Maier
came to light and went viral in 2007 when John Maloof discovered 100,000 of
her negatives in Chicago. Maloof and Charlie Siskel bring this formerly unknown
artist’s gorgeous black-and-white photos and remarkable life story to the big
screen. She was a mystery even to those who knew her. A secretive nanny in
the wealthy suburbs of Chicago, Vivian died in 2009 and would have been
forgotten but is now hailed as one of the greatest 20th-century photographers.
Tantalising and utterly fascinating - Rotten Tomatoes
Stations of the Cross
Wednesday 03 June
Time: 8pm
Germany, 2014, German, 110min, 15A, Dir: Dietrich Brüggemann
A 14-year-old girl’s commitment to the extreme tenets of a conservative
Roman Catholic sect is traced with a mix of compassion and irony in a film likely
to rile the faithful and the faithless alike. Dedicated to self-denial, young Maria is
tormented by the scrutiny of her fanatically observant mother and disconcerted by
her feelings for a boy whose appetite for music has not stopped at Bach cantatas.

Peggy O’Hegarty and her parents are packers. They squeeze fruit into tins, foxes

outside to find that winter has arrived… and everyone in her city gone! Ingenious
performer Louis Lovett leads the audience on an untamed adventure that

Saturday 25 April
VisuAl Art
Time: 10am to 5pm
Tuesday to Saturday
Hogg’s paintings and prints span the last ten years and highlight
his engagement with painting as an imaginative language and its
ability to give symbolic form to energies and emotions which
couldn’t otherwise be expressed. Pattern and colour are important,
as is the play between abstract and descriptive elements, a
dialogue between the known and the unknown.
Hearne’s paintings present a visual feast of colour, surface and
form. They reward careful investigation due to the complexity of
layered information drawn from sources as diverse as religious
iconography, contemporary fashion and architecture. The resultant
experience is sumptuous, engaging and ultimately enriching;
rewarding both the eye and the mind.
Expect an explosion of colour and pattern from two contemporary
Irish artists making visually arresting work.

The Source Gallery
endurance | resilience
A Curated @ Source project exploring Sport + Art
The Source is delighted to welcome visual art curator in residence Annette Moloney to the team in 2015.
Swimming, boxing and rock climbing are coming to The Source Gallery as part of a yearlong project that examines the
links between sport and art.
Developed by Annette, the visual art programme takes a looks at how and why individuals and communities get
involved in regular physical training and endurance sports, where human effort can act as a metaphor for surviving
times of economic or personal uncertainty.
During 2015 the gallery programme will work with artists who consider the relationship between human effort and
contemporary art. The artists themselves are involved in physical activity as part of their artistic research, where
running and climbing are used as forms of research along with drawing and photography.
Fitter Happier
VisuAl Art
Thursday 14 May - Thursday 25 June
The first exhibition in the curatorial residency is
developed in collaboration with a number of
contemporary visual artists, whose work considers
the human qualities of endurance and resilience.
We are looking forward to welcoming a number of
artists to Thurles including Dan Shipsides, Roisín
Lewis, Debbie Guinnane and Justin McKeown.
BIG CHEESE by Dan Shipsides
The exhibition will include the installation of a
functional climbing wall made from repurposed office desks; drawings based on long distance open water swimming
and performance work using familiar gym equipment.
In Fitter Happier the artists explore many aspects of human effort, endeavour and exertion, as well as the role of
daily routines and the social aspects of regular sports training.
The overall endurance | resilience programme will include a number public engagement events, which are free to
all, so keep an eye out for further information.
A second exhibition in Autumn 2015 will feature artists Roddy Buchanan and Fergus Byrne.

the life, the kids. But what do you do when everything you
ever dreamed of still isn’t enough?
