We’ve got a good selection of musical acts – the highly tipped Dublin songwriter Anderson who became famous for selling his album door-to-door, arrives for a solo show; Cork-born songwriter Mick Flannery presents his new album in another solo gig and we’ve opened up the auditorium for some tribute shows like Live Forever and Roadhouse Doors to give a more concert-type feel, so check these out on our brochure. Legendary Manchester poet John Cooper Clarke comes to visit us on May 4th; we have theatre with ‘The Corner Boys’, God Bless The Child’ and Brendan Balfe reminisces about the golden days of Irish radio in early June. Summer is a time for the kids and again we have a series of arts workshops and classes running over the summer months to keep them all occupied. Renowned Manchester poet and provocateur, Dr. John Cooper Clarke reads from his work. Clarke is a performance poet, movie star, rock star, comedian and social and cultural commentator. Mend & Makedo Theatre Co presents The Corner Boys THEATRE Friday 06 May Time: 8pm Price: €15/12 conc. Written by John MacKenna. Directed by Marian Brophy. Following their acclaimed sell-out tour with ‘Lucinda Sly’, Mend & Makedo Theatre Company return with ‘The Corner Boys’. The time is 1963. The place is an Irish village. For the two young women working in the local drapery shop the visit of John F. Kennedy is all important but for the corner boys the concerns are different - women, money and darker doings fill their lives. John MacKenna's play met with rave reviews when first staged ten years ago. This powerful play exposes the light and dark of Irish life in the sixties - the carnivals; the sodalities; the humour and the desperation. The play is intended for an over 16 audience. A wonderful piece of work - catches that time and that way of life perfectly RTE Radio 1 A powerful, funny play, with a dark twist in the gripping tale. The Nationalist Turning Pirate presents Anderson - Solo Saturday 07 May MUSIC Time: 9pm Price: €10 Anderson captured the music industry’s imagination last year, when a video of him selling his debut album door to door went viral, reaching an audience of over 100,000 people. Since releasing ‘Patterns’ at the close of 2015 his reputation as one of the most exciting acts in the country has been building at pace. His carefully crafted songs accomplish the rare feat of conveying classic melodies with contemplative, deeply personal sentiments, lending a unique texture to a timeless sounding record. Patterns appeared on a host of best album lists of 2015. "A work of grand beauty" - The Irish Times "Simply a beautiful record" - Tom Dunne page 5 Box Office: 0504 90204 Thurles Library presents Vincent Hannon: Celtic Seasons VISUAL ART Tuesday 10 to Tuesday 31 May Times: 10am to 5pm (later on performance evenings) Vincent Hannon trained in landscape design in the UK before returning to read for a BA at NUI, Galway. While practising landscape design he discovered the poetry of Omar Khayyám in translation by Edward FitzGerald. This developed an existing fascination with hinterlands where controls and wildness are interchangeable depending on the direction of examination. In recent years he has been exploring emigration from a visual artistic point of view. In this exhibition, 'Celtic Seasons', Vincent develops the theme of memory, its’ distortions and its’ ability to grip truths. The Bealtaine Festival presents A Walk in the Woods Wednesday 11 May FILM Time: 8pm Price: Free Photo: Anthony Woods Dir: Ken Kwapis, USA, 104 mins Cert: 15 In this comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer Bill Bryson (Robert Redford), challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail - 2,200 miles of America's most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquillity he hopes to find is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek - his long lost and former friend Katz (Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer. Syrian Night Donal Ryan and others share Syrian stories Friday 13 May READING Time: 8pm Price: Free - Donations welcome This event begins with acclaimed Tipperary author Donal Ryan reading an excerpt from ‘The Long Puck’, a story set in Syria and taken from his collection of short stories ‘A Slanting of the Sun’. Akram Shibly’s documentary, ‘Waiting at the Door’ which explains the current crisis from an insiders perspective will also be screened. As the war in Syria continues, and with people forced to flee their homes, all funds raised at this event will go towards supporting the education of Syrian children displaced to Lebanon and Jordan. This is an initiative of the Syrian families resettled in Thurles under the Refugee Resettlement Programme and supported by the Office of Migrant Integration. Everyone welcome! page 6 www.thesourceartscentre.ie Atlantic Wednesday 18 May FILM Time: 8pm Price: €9/7 conc./ €5 Film Club Members Dir: Risteard O’Domhnaill, Ireland, 2016, 80 mins Cert: Club In a collaboration spanning Ireland, Norway and Newfoundland (Canada), award-winning director Risteard O’Domhnaill (The Pipe, 2010) launches his new feature-length documentary. But their isolation is no spiritual quest and when a sailor arrives seeking justice for the crimes visited upon him as a child, the group's fragile grip on sanctuary comes tearing apart. Winner – Grand Jury Prize, Silver Bear, Berlin Film Festival 2015 God Bless the Child First Confessions are the Hardest! THEATRE Friday 27 May Time: 8pm Price: €18/15 conc. The short stories of Cork born Frank O'Connor are universally regarded as being classics of their kind. For the first time, ‘My Oedipus Complex’, ‘The Genius’ and ‘First Confession’ are brought together within a single full-length play. Meet young Michael, who goes into mortal combat with his father when he returns from the First World War, Larry, a genius who cannot understand why the world can't keep up with him, and Jackie, who has the grim task of not only making his first confession and communion, but must also deal with his very obstreperous grandmother. Richly evocative of Ireland in the early decades of the 20th Century, funny and moving and featuring memorable performances, ‘God Bless The Child’ is a hugely entertaining and uplifting night of theatre. Mick Flannery – Solo Saturday 28 May MUSIC Time: 9pm Price: €20 In the end of the day and the heel of the hunt, you’re left with the songs. Everything comes and goes, the shows and the tours and the applause and the acclaim. Everything else doesn’t matter in the long run. But the songs remain. Mick Flannery realised this a long time ago. With acclaimed collections such as ‘White Lies’ and ‘Red To Blue’ under his belt, this solo performance at The Source will be a chance to hear Mick showcase some of his brand new material from his upcoming album ‘By the Rule’. page 8 www.thesourceartscentre.ie Chronic Wednesday 01 June FILM Time: 8pm Price: €9/7 conc./ €5 Film Club Members Dir: Michel Franco, Mexico, France, 2015, 93 mins, Cert: CLUB Tim Roth stars in this honest film concerning the politics of palliative care. David is a nurse who works with terminally ill patients. Efficient and dedicated to his profession, he develops strong and even intimate relationships with each person he cares for. But outside of his work David is ineffectual, awkward, and reserved. It is clear that he needs each patient as much as they need him Pat Egan presents Brendan Balfe’s ‘And We’re Off Air’ Friday 03 June THEATRE Time: 8pm Price: €20/15 conc. How did Terry Wogan inaugurate young announcers? Why did the newsreader fall off the chair? What caused Larry Gogan to collapse in giggles? Irish radio wasn’t as serious as it sounded. In this new one-man show, Brendan Balfe recalls some of the personalities and eccentrics who became household names in Ireland. In his 50 years in broadcasting, Brendan has worked with all the greats and his memories and anecdotes add colour to the history of Irish broadcasting. His tales of Gay Byrne, Mike Murphy, Maurice O’Doherty, Dermot Morgan, and many others, steer just this side of the libel laws. He also tells of meeting such diverse personalities as Peggy Lee, Stan Freberg and Jimi Hendrix. His accounts of broadcasting legends -and their foibles- add up to a fascinating and ‘historically funny’ experience. ‘Brendan Balfe- a National Treasure’ – Sunday Independent Gerudo Valley MUSIC Saturday 04 June Time: 9pm Price: €10 Gerudo Valley are a three-piece Irish contemporary band, based in Thurles featuring Stewy Yeomans - Lead Vocals, Guitar, Paul Ryan - Vocals, Guitar and Sean Mongey - Banjo. This concert at The Source sees the launch of their debut album entitled ‘Tales From The Valley’ which features songs such as ‘It’s Been A While’ and ‘River Bend’, along with covers such as ‘Hallelujah’ and some traditional Irish tunes. The album was recorded in the Valley Lab studios from November 2015 to March 2016. Those attending will receive a free cd of the new album. page 9 Box Office: 0504 90204 The Survivalist Wednesday 08 June FILM Time: 8pm Price: €9/7 conc./ €5 Film Club Members Dir: Stephen Fingleton, UK, 2015, 103 min Cert: 18 Post-apocalyptic tales are a movie staple nowadays, but few have the lean intelligence and skill of ‘The Survivalist’. This accomplished Northern Ireland-set production pits a hardy, forest-dwelling loner (Martin McCann, ’71) against a pair of starving women who intrude on his isolated commune. Existence is reduced to primal trade-offs -sex for food and shelter - but loyalties shift and external foes demand desperate alliances. The audience can sing along to classics like ‘Champagne Supernova’, ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’, ‘Columbia’, and ‘Wonderwall’, but you can also expect to hear that nugget that Noel and the boys kept specially for a b-side. Some might say that playing festivals and other large-scale shows, Live Forever have honed their craft to offer a rock and roll experience that can roll with the originals. page 10 VISUAL ARTS www.thesourceartscentre.ie Elle Academy of Dance presents Lets Dance Thursday 16 June Friday 17 June Saturday 18 June FAMILY Time: 7.30pm (show 1) Thursday Time: 7.30pm (show 2) Friday Times: 3pm (show 1) & 7.30pm (show 2) Price: €12/8 conc/38 family of four Celebrating its 10th year, The Elle Academy of Dance returns to The Source for its annual show.
