Nebraska USA, 2013, English, 114 min, 12A, Dir: Alexander Payne A poor old man living in Montana escapes repeatedly from his house to go to Nebraska to collect a sweepstakes prize he thinks he has won. Frustrated by his increasing dementia, his family debates putting him into a nursing home until one of his two sons finally offers to take his father by car, even as he realizes the futility. En route the father is injured, and the two must rest a few days in the small decaying Nebraska town where the father was born and where, closely observed by the son, he re-encounters his past. The Misfits USA, English, 1961, 130 min, PG, Dir: John Huston Sophisticated, but emotionally crippled Roslyn played by Marilyn Monroe, has come to Nevada to gain a quick and easy divorce. When her landlady introduces her to aging broken cowboy Gay Langland (Clark Gable), she finally finds herself with a worthy partner. Meanwhile, Gay and his fellow horsemen Guido and Perce (Eli Wallach and Montgomery Clift) scheme to capture a herd of wild horses. Though megawatt star power and a brilliant script by Arthur Miller failed to turn The Misfits into box office success (probably due a legendarily troubled shoot), time and critical reputation have treated it very kindly. It was the final film for icons Gable and Monroe giving what many believe to be Marilyn’s strongest performance. Simmons), an instructor known for his terrifying teaching methods discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into the top jazz ensemble, forever changing the young man's life. But Andrew's passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession as his ruthless teacher pushes him to the brink of his ability and his sanity. Damien Chazelle’s bravura debut treats the drum kit as a theatre of war – The Irish Times Timbuktu Wednesday 30 September Time: 8pm France/ Mauritania, 2013, Arabic French, 97 min, 12A, Dir: Abderrahmane Sissako Abderrahmane Sissako confirms his status as one of the true humanists of recent cinema with this stunningly shot and deeply empathetic drama. Set in the early days of the jihadist takeover of northern Mali in 2012, the film is a stunningly shot condemnation of intolerance and its annihilation of diversity, told in a way that clearly denounces without resorting to cardboard perpetrators. This extraordinary film by the Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako premiered a year ago in Cannes, but has gone on to become, if anything, more timely and urgent. César Award for; Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Original Writing, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Cinematography. Glassland Wednesday 07 October Time: 8pm Ireland, 2014, English, 89 min, 15A, Dir: Gerard Barrett In a desperate bid to save his mother from a crippling alcohol addiction and reunite his broken family, John, a young taxi driver on the fringes of the criminal underworld is forced to take a job which will see him pushed further into Dublin’s dark underbelly. But will he be prepared to act when the time comes, knowing that whatever he decides to do, his and his family’s lives will be changed forever? Following his celebrated debut Pilgrim Hill, Glassland confirms Gerard Barrett as one of the most assured and talented young Irish directors working today. – Galway Film Fleadh 2014 page 6 www.thesourceartscentre.ie The Salt of the Earth Wednesday 14 October Time: 8pm Italy, Brazil, France, 2014, French, Portuguese, 110min, PG, Dir: Juliano Ribeiro, Salgad, Wim Wenders Oscar nominations for The Buena Vista Social Club and Pina attest to the way that the documentary seems to bring out the best in Wim Wenders. The Salt of the Earth is no exception as it pays tribute to the extraordinary life of photographer and environmentalist Sebastião Salgado. Working with Salgado’s son Juliano Ribeiro, Wenders has created a film entirely in keeping with the humility of the subject. Hauntingly beautiful images are matched with illuminating testimony to create an utterly absorbing portrait. The Shining Wednesday 28 October Time: 8pm USA/UK, 1980, English, 113min, 16, Dir: Stanley Kubrick Think of the greatest terror imaginable. In this harrowing masterpiece from Stanley Kubrick, is it fear of murder by someone who should love and protect you - a member of your own family? From a script he co-adapted from the Stephen King novel, Kubrick melds vivid performances, menacing settings, dreamlike tracking shots and shock after shock into a milestone of the macabre. In a signature role, Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, who's come to the elegant, isolated Overlook Hotel as off-season caretaker with his wife and son. Patrick’s Day Wednesday 04 November Time: 8pm Ireland, 2014, English, 101 min, 15A, Dir: Terry McMahon Patrick is a warm, open, twenty-six-year-old virgin schizophrenic. The object of his desire is Karen, a suicidal flight attendant, who has no idea the intimacy she shares with Patrick might reintroduce her to living. Patrick’s obsessive mother Maura doesn’t realize her own misguided love may be more dangerous than hate. Wild Tales Wednesday 18 November Time: 8pm Argentina, 2014, Spanish, 122 min, R, Dir: Damián Szifrón Wild Tales is a collection of six crazy, absurd and hilarious stories of people who are stressed out or depressed by the drive for success, competition and the inequality of the world we live in. With its underlying theme of violence and vengeance, this Argentinean black comedy-drama boasts an eclectic ensemble cast. Co-produced by Pedro Almodóvar, Wild Tales was Argentina’s submission to the 87th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category page 7 Box Office: 0504 90204 Winter Sleep Wednesday 25 November Time: 8pm Turkey, 2014, Turkish, English, 196 min, 15, Dir: Nuri Bilge Ceylan Aydin, a former actor, runs a small hotel in central Anatolia with his young wife Nihal with whom he has a stormy relationship and his sister Necla who is suffering from her recent divorce. The Arbor Wednesday 02 December Time: 8pm UK, 2009, English, 90 min, 15, Dir: Clio Barnard A housing project in Northern England known as The Arbor left an indelible impression on playwright Andrea Dunbar. She grew up there, named her first play after it, and based all of her subsequent work there.
