Village Link March 2013 - Grimston, West Norfolk
Village Link
March 2013
Grimston Schools Trust and the former First Schools
At the Grimston Parish Council
meeting at the end of January, Trevor
Stebbings said that plans that seemed
to be coming together for using Pott
Row and Church Hill school buildings
have had to be shelved, so the
Grimston Schools Trustees, who
own the two former schools, are
now beginning again to find
appropriate uses for them, and he
appealed to local people to come
forward with ideas.
While they used them, the County
Council paid all the costs of
maintenance and insurance. These
costs now fall on the Trust, so there
needs to be some income from
whatever uses the buildings are put
to. While the Charity Commissioners
will allow for quite different uses for
the buildings, they will expect some
money to be generated for
educational benefit to the village, for
example providing scholarships for
local families. .
So what are the greatest needs in our
community? Could this be an
opportunity for the setting up of local
workshops, providing employment?
Could they be useful spaces to hire,
without simply duplicating the Village
Hall? Could they be converted into
housing? Or for indoor sports? Is
there a way a library, art gallery,
cinema or theatre could be
established? The need for adequate
car parking and safe traffic movement
might be a limiting factor.
A more radical possibility might be to
sell both buildings, and the Village
Hall, and use the money to fund a
modern community centre. What
ideas do you have? You could come
with your idea to the March 4th
Parish Council meeting. The Trustees
would like to hear any suggestions,
provided they can be squared with
the
rulings
of
the
Charity
Commission.
It turns out that the extensive grounds
of Pott Row School are owned by the
County Council, not the Trust (added
on to the school to increase play
space), with a right of way behind the
Village Hall boundary wall.
Another complication is that Church
Hill School is a Grade 2 Listed
Building, so a total redevelopment of
that site can’t really be contemplated.
Part of the building was a headteacher’s house and the County
Council should have handed the
building back in the manner they took
it on. They have restored the Village
Hall kitchen which they altered when
they needed it for school lunch use.
Holly Meadows School has made a
lot of progress since the schools
were re-organised in 2011. But it’s
to be hoped that the buildings which
were for so long were a much-loved
part of the village community can
now find new uses which enhance
the community, fit for purpose in this
twenty-first century.

Thanks to the Old Bell, Grimston
At Christmas time The Old Bell held a
raffle and they were so kind as to
donate the proceeds to Little
Sunshines Pre School, an amazing sum
of £250! The staff and committee
6
were truly touched and very grateful
and have now purchased waterproof
overalls so the children can splash
about happily outside, and some new
learning games and puzzles too.

Greenfingers
On February 12th Charles Fosgate
welcomed members to the first
meeting of 2013 and gave members a
rough guide to the programme for the
year. Members were asked for their
preference of menu for the Annual
Supper in April. Jenny Haywood has
generously offered her front garden
for a plant sale on the morning of
Saturday May 11th. There are still a
few remaining places for the outing to
Gardeners World Live at the NEC in
Birmingham on June 13th. Contact
Dione Fosgate on KL 636963 if you
are interested. A visit to Mannington
Hall gardens is in the planning stages
for July 4th. Requests and suggestions
were sought for future speakers.
Liz Browne was then introduced as
the Guest Speaker. She has been
running the Urban Jungle Nursery at
Costessey for ten years. Her talk
was based on architectural plants and
easy-to-grow exotics, mentioning
that all plants not native to these isles
have at some time been considered
exotic. She mentioned in particular
tulip mania in the 17th century when
large sums of money changed hands
for one bulb. The most attractive
colourings were usually caused by a
virus. The Speaker was thanked for
her fascinating Talk. A large selection
of plants were available for members
to purchase.
Plant of the month winners were 1st
Margaret Gladman, 2nd Stephanie
Whitley and 3rd Ann Nicholson.
This month’s meeting will be on
March 12th, when Stephen Lovell will
be speaking on ‘The Four Seasons’.

The Archbishop is inviting as many
people as possible to join him on this
“Journey of Prayer”. After a service
of Holy Communion with the Bishop
of Norwich and the Bishop’s Staff
team, the Archbishop will begin his
pilgrimage in Norwich at the Forum
where he will lead prayers at
11.45am. He will then walk to
Norwich Cathedral, giving out
candles to members of the public
along the way, and inviting all who
wish to do so to join him in prayer at
the Cathedral.
From 12 noon to 5.30pm, the
Archbishop will be praying in the
Cathedral, and there will be several
different prayer “stations” for anyone
who so wishes to use. These will
include a children’s prayer space,
which schools will be invited to visit;
a prayer tree where prayers can be
written, prayed and hung on
the tree; a prayer map and
globe to include prayers for
the world-wide Anglican
Communion; prayer through
text messages; icons and
candles; and music. The
Archbishop’s pilgrimage will
conclude with Choral Evensong at
5.30pm before setting off to
Coventry.
The Bishop of Norwich, Graham
James, said, “I’m delighted the
Archbishop of Canterbury has
decided to prepare for the start of
his public ministry with a prayer
pilgrimage, and that he has chosen to
begin in Norwich. It will be very good
to pray with and for Archbishop
Justin and ask God to bless and
strengthen him in his new
responsibilities. Thursday March 14th
will be a special day for the city,
cathedral and diocese.
Nothing
quite like it has happened before, and
we are busily preparing to make it
special. Everyone who wants to
support our new Archbishop will be
very welcome.”
The five day pilgrimage continues to
Coventry, London, Truro and
Chichester.

On Saturday February 16th, the
Annual Lunch was held at The Anvil
public house in Congham. It is to be
hoped that everyone enjoyed the
meal. The next meeting at the Village
Hall is the A.G.M. on Saturday March
16th, when subscriptions of £5 will
be collected.
It is also when the Committee will be
elected (or re-elected).
A new

as Valerie Durrant will be standing
down.
If you would like to join the Good
Companions Club for the over-60’s,

Brand New Female Choir for King’s Lynn
Sing For Wellbeing is launching a
brand new Singing Group especially
for females who are aged between 15
and 45 years old. Beginning on April
15th the 12-week term will be held in
Kings Lynn on Mondays from 7pm –
9pm and there is a special discount for
the Choir’s very first term.
“He has shown that there can be
solidarity, support and friendship and
that lives can be changed in a positive,
life-affirming way. Working on the
same principles I feel that there is also
a place for Civilian women to sing
together
in
co-operative
and
supportive groups.”
Carol O’Neill is a Natural Voice
Practitioner, Qualified Counsellor and
founder of Sing For Wellbeing. She
explains: “The Lynn Female Vocale will
be a performing choir designed to
celebrate the female voice in all its
creativity, inspiration and passion. The
Choir offers women a chance to sing
and bond in an imaginative, informal
and fun environment where freedom
of expression is encouraged. There
has been a great surge in Military
Wives Choirs since Gareth Malone
made them popular in recent years.
Singing is known for its ability to
make us feel better as we breathe
more, expanding the lungs to support
the heart and lift the spirits. It
doesn’t matter if you can’t read music
and even if you have no experience
of singing in groups. It’s definitely
worth putting your brave boots on
and having a go.
Those who are keen to take part
should telephone 01328 838316,
email [email protected]
or visit www.singforwellbeing.co.uk.

Praying for You
If you would like church members to
join in your prayer for a concern you
have, you can note it down on a
‘prayer-leaf’ on the prayer tree in
Grimston Church, normally open
each day until at least 4pm. This
month, church members will be
remembering in prayer the people
who live in Gayton Road, Vong Lane
Grimston, Watery, Candlestick and
Elder Lanes.
16
Normal hours will be 10am-1pm and
2pm-5pm but Evening sessions for
local residents can be arranged if there
is adequate demand, and it is assumed
that there will be. These would
normally take place at a point in the
inquiry timetable after hearing the
cases for the main parties and round
about the time for the sessions on
Conditions and any S106 Obligations.
On any day with an evening session,
there would be no morning session
that day and she will sit from 2pm to
5pm and then have the evening
session from 7pm-10pm. March 26th

If you visit Israel and Jordan today to
see the biblical sites, you can be in for
a big disappointment. Endless sites are
claimed on what may be very spurious
grounds, given all the changes the land
has gone through since ancient times,
but there are certain things that you
can be quite sure of. The Lake of
Galilee and the Dead Sea are definitely
in the same place – although the water
levels will have often changed. And
nearly every pilgrim stops at the top
of Mount Nebo, East of the Jordan, to
look West as Moses did, just before
he died. There on the distant skyline
you can see the outer edges of
Jerusalem – though there weren’t of
course high-rise hotels visible when
Moses surveyed the scene, and nor
did he have binoculars or a zoom lens.
Moses did not enter the Promised
Land that he had been leading people
towards for the forty years since they
escaped from Egypt. It was for
Joshua, a much younger leader, to
take over as they entered the new
land.
But he gave a series of
addresses (lectures or sermons) to
the people about how they were to
live as they moved in and settled the
land. And these exhortations are
written up for us as the fifth book of
the Bible, Deuteronomy. He looked
back over their adventures and
lessons learnt in the desert
wanderings. He reviewed the Law
which God had given them. And he
urged them in the strongest possible
terms not to be so besotted with
prosperity that they forgot to love
God who had protected them all this
time, and brought them to the
promised land once more.
Jesus loved this book, and often
quoted from it. He singled out the
very greatest commandment, from
chapter 6, as the one thing to
remember most: “Love the LORD
your God with all your heart, with all
your soul, and with all your strength”
just adding ‘and love your neighbour
as yourself’ from Leviticus 19.

Incinerator update
I first wrote to the Lynn News about
my concerns over the prospect of a
waste incinerator 5 years ago, in
February 2008. Exactly 10 years ago, I
was preparing to leave for Kuwait as
an RAF Auxiliary to help bring
democracy to Iraq. During the
hostilities, I was given the role of
testing for the release of biological
warfare agents. Fortunately, none
were found, but I left the war with an
appreciation of how small amounts of
highly toxic substances, released into
the atmosphere, can risk many, many
lives. I also gained an understanding
of what countries are prepared to do
to secure vital resources, especially
crude oil.
With one big push from all of us, we
can win this.
The incinerator campaign has brought
these three themes back into my
life… It is abundantly clear that
society cannot continue to consume
materials and create waste in such
prodigious
quantities
without
consequence. To burn precious
resources and extract a token
amount of energy, when alternative
technologies to recycle them are
available, is nothing short of criminal.
The records show that King’s Lynn
suffers from poor air quality and poor
respiratory health. It is foolish indeed
to contemplate a waste incinerator
just up-wind of the town, whatever
the efforts are to clean the emissions.
For West Norfolk, this debate was
concluded 2 years ago, resulting in
one of, if not, the most decisive poll
in English electoral history. We owe
it to ourselves and future generations
to ensure that our voices are heard.
The Borough Council has released an
independent report confirming the
viability of their alternative proposal,
which could see 90% of our black bin
waste recycled.

On fundraising, three events between
August Bank Holiday and October
12th realised over £1000 profit. Jazz in
the Afternoon with the excellent Tom
Maddison Band was enjoyed by more
than 80 people, many not local. The
weather was kind, the atmosphere
very relaxed and with the usual high
quality refreshments and raffle, £525
was raised. Thanks to the helpers and
those who donated raffle prizes.
On September 22nd, a Coffee
Morning at Field House, courtesy of
Christine and Richard Moore, was
another great social and fundraising
success and raised £360. In October
we enjoyed a truly memorable
evening in church with Hugh Lupton, a
professional
storyteller
who
enchanted us with tales of a host of
long dead local characters whose
memories live on in legend. The event
raised £132.
Thanks to a large turnout for a church
working party in October, much work
was done outside and in. These events
are very well supported (possibly it
has something to do with the
refreshments!) and make a huge
difference to the condition of the
church and the churchyard. It was too
wet to cut the big hedges but this will
be done as soon as the ground
conditions allow.
There was no
evidence of any rabbits so we may at
last have achieved our objective of
rabbit proofing the churchyard!
What we are doing
Work has been completed to replace
missing and damaged louvres in the
Belfry. Stainless steel mesh has been
fitted to keep out birds. Detritus
accumulated over several years has
been cleared away. We paid £2250 to
the PCC to cover the full cost of this
work. Interestingly, this project was
completed just as the report of the
Quinquennial Inspection was received
which listed this work as ‘urgent’!!
The same report also listed as ‘urgent’
the need to replace a number of
missing roof slates, to re-fix others
which had slipped, to re-point failed
mortar joints between masonry and
lead flashing where the Nave joins the
Tower, Nave joins North Transept,
Nave joins the side aisles (both North
and South sides) and around some of
the Clerestory (top row of) windows.
In addition, the leadwork on the roof
of the South Porch was in urgent need
of repair as damp was evident in the
roof timbers. Finally, the rains of last
Summer and Autumn had again
demonstrated the inadequate size of
some gutters and downspouts, so that
overflow water draining down the
walls was causing potentially damaging
damp. Thus, the replacement of some
gutters and downspouts with larger
diameter was seen as urgent.
Whilst none of these repairs was
anticipated as unduly expensive in
isolation, scaffolding would need to be
erected for each job and the cost of
this would, in some cases, exceed the
materials and labour costs. It
therefore made good sense to seek
25
quotations for all these separate
repairs as one tranche of work. With
the help of the church architect, a
specification was prepared and put out
to tender to three companies. In
December, the PCC was able to
select the best quote on price and this
work has now begun, which explains
why the church is presently festooned
in scaffolding! It should be completed
in March. Including architect’s fees and
VAT, the total cost will be in the
order of £10,957 and we are able to
make available funds to the PCC to
cover the full cost.
Also in December, at long last, the
final documentation was completed
giving permission for a replacement
outer door for the South Porch. The
work was immediately put out to
tender to three companies and in
January, the PCC was able to select
the best quote on price. Manufacture
is already underway and the work is
scheduled for completion in late
March. Including all fees and VAT, the
total cost is in the order of £9425 and
again, we are able to make available
funding to cover this expenditure.
We have agreed to finance a low-cost
experiment with quartz heaters
located in the Chancel. This will
require permission from the DAC and
this may take some time to achieve. If
permission is granted and the
experiment is successful, quartz
heating for the whole church would
be the next step although we already
know this would require an upgrade
of the existing electrical supply. Watch
this space!

This is an impressive list of works
involving significant expenditure. It has
been made possible through your
support. ‘Thank you’ – and rest
assured, we are making a difference.

HAY FEVER
The hay fever season will start soon, so be prepared.
Order your repeat prescriptions
If you have previously had a prescription for hay fever treatments, you
do not need to make an appointment to obtain further supplies.
Written repeat prescription requests should be sent to the dispensary.
Prescription costs
Over-the-counter nasal sprays usually cost about the same as a
prescription charge. A month’s supply of antihistamine tablets usually
costs substantially more when bought over-the-counter than they cost
on prescription.
Start treatment for hay fever early
All treatments work better if started before the onset of the hay fever
season – late March or early April is a sensible time to start.

Church Electoral Rolls
During this month, Parish Church
membership lists are being renewed
throughout the Church of England (as
happens every six years). If you have
been a member of a Parish Church
here or elsewhere, you need to fill in
and submit an electoral roll form,
otherwise that membership will
cease. If you would like to be on the
membership roll, you should get hold
of a form in time to hand it in by
April 14th. To qualify you need to be
either a resident of the parish, or a
regular worshipper at that church (or
both). The forms are available in
church on Sundays, or from the
Rectory.
In Lutheran countries, church
membership is linked to paying the
voluntary church tax, and if you want
to be buried in the churchyard you
need to have been paying it. but in
England every body is welcomed!

Lent Appeal
On the back page of this month’s
Village Link there are details of a
county-wide appeal for work in two
parts of Uganda, where people from
Norfolk have been helping. Holly
Meadows children are taking part and
any other support from around the
village would be much appreciated.
A charity called World Shine
Foundation is building a dormitory at a
school in a poor part of West Uganda
so children won't have to walk up to 6
miles to school every day which can
be dangerous.
Last summer, the Revd Adrian Miller,
from Tasburgh near Norwich led a
team of over 20 people, mainly from
Norfolk to a school established by
World Shine Ministries in a poor part
of West Uganda at Rwentobo.
Children walk up to 6 miles into
school, and 6 miles back home again,
and this affects attendance and can be
dangerous - particularly for the girls.
The school has been designed so
dormitories can be added, and we
hope to raise enough money through
the Lent Project to secure the building
of the first of these so the children
living furthest from the school can be
educated safely.
The Oasis of Life Charity is building a
medical centre in Northern Uganda
30
aiming to bring hope, health and
happiness to a people devastated by
war over the past 20 years.
The north of Uganda has been
devastated over the past years by the
Lord's Resistance Army. It became so
dangerous that people had to leave
their own homes to seek refuge in
Internally Displaced People's Camps.
With the threat from the Lords
Resistance Army receding, the camps
are closing, but how do the people reestablish their communities when they
have nothing?
Freda Lewis, a retired teacher living in
Norwich, first went out to Lira as a
volunteer to give humanitarian aid in
the IDP Camps. She distributed relief
supplies to people on the verge of
starvation, living without hope of relief
or an end to their suffering. Appalled
particularly by the plight of the
children, she returned on her own.
And to cut a long story short, she
established The Oasis Of Life Charity
which raises money to alleviate the
despair and despondency of children
living in IDP Camps in Northern
Uganda. Working with the church
community in Lira and Steve Puleh
from Makerere University in Kampala,
it uses small scale projects to actively
make a difference.
