The New Village Link begins here
February 2013
WELCOME!
Welcome to the new Village Link – no
longer printed at the Rectory on a
machine which is now beginning to
show its age. It’s the fourth machine
we have used since Village Link began
in 1981 – printing over 19,000 pages a
month takes its toll. From this issue,
‘Minuteman Press’ on the Hardwick
are doing our printing, and as well as
improvements in quality, this means
that we are now released from the
constraints of an eight sheet edition,
so there will be more room for
articles and more space for
advertisers. So you can expect a
thicker edition from next month. If
so, I hope we don’t wear out our
faithful volunteer deliverers, without
whom Village Link would fizzle out.
It’s a tribute to our community that
we’ve never been short of offers to
do this monthly distribution. They all
deserve a medal, especially in the sort
of weather we are going through now.
As well as another upgrade of the
quality of the production, I am hoping
that having Village Link printed outside
means it will be less of a burden for
my successors, as I shall be retiring
some six months hence. My last
Sunday service will be on July 28th,
although I will still be doing various
things amongst the packing up
(officially holiday) after that.
Meanwhile we will need to gather
some help on the editorial team over
the next few months, so that all the
work doesn’t fall on one pair of
shoulders. When the Rev. Andrew
Thomas left in 1983, several different
people each took on part of the work.
Job-sharing is even easier now, with
the advent of email, so a team should
be quite viable.
I believe a community thrives on good
communication, helping us all to know
what’s going on, and how we can offer
to help eachother, so I’ve enjoyed my
part in producing Village Link, even
though it’s sometimes been a mad
dash to meet the deadline before the
team arrive to collate and staple all
the pages, and count out the bundles
for the deliverers. Now they only
need to do the last bit.
Having lived in the village for
approaching thirty years, Margaret and
I view the approach of retirement
with considerable trepidation – it’s
going to be a big wrench uprooting
ourselves after so long, and where our
family have grown up very happily.
We hope we’ll find as much
community spirit when we move to
Wellesbourne in Warwickshire, but
we realise there’s nowhere quite like
Norfolk!!
Meanwhile, now that Village Link will
have more space – does anyone have
a gift for setting puzzles or
crosswords, or writing about local
history, photos or memories from the
past ? ...

Greenfingers
The first Greenfingers meeting of the
year is on Tuesday February 12th at
the Village Hall, Pott Row, at 7pm for
7.30 when Liz Browne will be
speaking on Easy Exotics. Visitors
are always welcome.
Dog-lovers
Dogs being walked along the footpath
into Vong Lane which comes out
between Vong Farm and the school
are being allowed to foul the
footpath, and the men who cut the
farm hedge have been splattered in a
most unpleasant way. There are dogbins about - Please use them!
Charity Performance of Calendar Girls
The King¹s Lynn Players will be
presenting Tim Firth’s play ‘Calendar
Girls’ at the King's Lynn Arts Centre
from March 13th to 16th. It’s based
on a true story of eleven WI
members who posed nude for a
calendar to raise money for
Leukaemia Research. The Mail on
Sunday reviewer said ‘It is marvellous
theatre, guaranteed to make you
laugh, cry and come out singing
‘Jerusalem’ ’.
The Players are truly inspired by the
opportunity to present this fantastic
play, and alongside their production,
are supporting a local charity - The
Robert Foot Leukaemia Fund, which
has a website www.rflf.org.uk.
They are also holding a Charity Ball
and producing a Calendar for 2014,
to provide a legacy fund-raising
opportunity throughout next year.
For more details, visit the players’
web-site: www.kingslynnplayers.co.uk
Grimston & District W.I
The next meeting will be on Monday
February 18th at Grimston Village
Hall from 7.30. This evening will see
members enjoying a ‘Crafty Cuppa’. It
is an ideal opportunity to bring along
any craft that you are working on and
enjoy catching up with friends at the
same time, and no doubt more
chatting will be done than craft work!
Anyone who would like to find out
more about the WI but is not a
member will be more than welcome
to join in for the evening. You do not
have to bring along a craft item as
you can come just for a good chat
and of course a cuppa. The
competition is for ‘A Conversation
Stopper’.
Thank you on behalf of the teenagers in Nakwero!!!!
Thank you to everyone who came,

Can Bank
The can bank at the village hall is full,
but not only with cans. As there is a
mixture of cans and glass bottles, we
cannot find a commercial company
who will empty it.
It may be necessary to ask volunteers
to manually sort the contents so they
can be correctly recycled! This will
not be a pleasant task, so we would
ask everyone who uses it, in future to
only use it for cans. We will
investigate the possibility of a bottle
bank in the near future.

Praying for You
If you would like church members to
join you in your prayer for a concern
you have, you might like to note it
down on a ‘prayer-leaf’ on the prayer
tree in Grimston Church, normally
open each day until at least 4pm.
This month, church members will be
remembering in prayer the people
who live in Congham Road,
Massingham Road, Bell Road and the
Walnuts.
Births, Deaths and Marriages
Barrie W. RUDD, formerly of
Church Close) latterly living at
Docking House, died aged 76 on
January 11th. His funeral is taking
place at Mintlyn Crematorium on
Thursday January 31st at 10.45am.
Continuing disruption on the 1153 through Congham
Anglian Water were hoping to have
been able to re-open the road
through (or past) Congham by now,
but the severe weather has made it
very difficult. So we will have to use
the nearest alternative, Station Road
Roydon, for a little longer, to get to
Hillington or the 148 to go North, or
the Massingham Road to get further
14
in the Fakenham direction.
winter has only just begun!
And
Using by-roads is very pleasant at
other times of year, but these roads
may not be gritted or salted, so
extreme caution and patience will be
needed. Going via Knights Hill or
Gayton will be somewhat safer
options.
Incinerator Update - The Inquiry begins this month!
Occasionally letters in the papers
reveal how a few believe the modern
myth that no pollution escapes
‘modern’ Incinerator filters. If there
were no pollution you can be sure
companies would not waste money
building 85m tall stacks to get rid of
‘fresh air’.
Intensive preparation work is going
on for the Public Inquiry, KLWIN and
Cory Wheelabrator have been
requesting information from each
other and meeting to identify any
areas of common ground between
us. There are many procedures and
strict deadlines to be met before the
Inquiry opens on February 26th.
Some
information
has
been
exchanged and some not. KLWIN
have provided Cory Wheelabrator
with a report from independent
consultancy
Eunomia.
Cory
Wheelabrator have provided maps
showing whereabouts they think
their greatest concentrations of
Mercury, Lead, Cadmium and other
pollution would hit the ground.
Where the pollution lands and in
what concentration is important to
the Inquiry.
At the time of writing this update
Cory Wheelabrator are still not
prepared to release details of their
filter specification arguing they have
not chosen their supplier. This is
important and concerning because
legislation requires them to use ‘Best
Available Technique’ (BAT) filters,
unfortunately ‘BAT’ includes both
effective and ineffective filters. Some
16
fail to trap between 70-95% of the
most harmful particles. Back in
September at a trade exhibition Dr
Fleck, a senior official connected with
the Willows Incinerator, stated the
filter specification had been decided
and details would be provided.
However,
since
then
Cory
Wheelabrator have been unwilling to
provide the specification and
continue to say “..this specific request
for information is not considered
relevant..” Why they will still not
provide this information is not
known.
Children’s Page
It is essential people from across
West Norfolk come to the Inquiry,
listen to all the evidence and
understand the basis for the
inspector’s final recommendation. It
is free to attend. The sound quality
should be much improved from PreInquiry Lynn Sport event. The first
day of the inquiry will be at King’s
Lynn Corn Exchange starting 10am
Tuesday February 26th. Following
days will be at the Professional
Development Centre, Kilham’s Way,
next to the back of the fire station.
KLWIN’s fundraising events include
Bollywood style Curry Night Feb.9th
at 7pm, for tickets call 01553 840640.
The next KLWIN Coffee Morning
and Crafts is on Feb. 23rd 9am–12 at
Fairgreen Farms, Hill Rd, Middletion,
PE32 1RN.

Holly Meadows School
China has arrived in Holly Meadows
and we are having an amazing time.
All the children have had the
opportunity to meet and hold two
Cornsnakes that belong to Lewis
Savory in Year 6. He and his mum
brought them to school for the day
and visited each class answering an
encyclopaedia’s worth of questions.
We are very grateful to them for
their time and expertise. Next month
is the new Chinese Year of the Snake
and we felt it would not be right for
us to miss an opportunity to learn
from being close to a real snake.
Also, we have set up role play areas
around the school for the children to
have the experience of running a
Chinese Take-away. Their Maths
skills are improving by the day as they
calculate the costs and discounts that
are available to regular customers!
The younger ones are working on
mastering chopsticks and they are all
planning some great menus for our
Chinese meal. Some of the pupils
have already started Chinese dance
with a visiting teacher from
Springwood Academy and she will be
working with us over the next few
weeks so we can perform a Dragon
Dance.
I was delighted to hear that a former
pupil had read Village Link and has
made contact with the school as she
has two Chinese colleagues who will
come and work with the school on a
full range of Chinese activities from
cooking, writing, speaking, dancing to
creating with paper such as Origami
18

thrilled that the Link entry each

something with us. Thank you.
Our list of school Ambassadors is
growing and we have now presented
the coveted badges to Olivia Morris,
Nisha Sirju, Mason Higby and Ellie
Twite who join Jordan and Ewain in
the Ambassador’s “Frame of Fame”
on display in the entrance hall. The
staff and pupils are grateful for all
their help and support around the
school, particularly with setting a
great example to the other pupils.
We have survived the bad weather
so far, staying open every day and I
am delighted that so many pupils and
staff have managed to get into school
safely. Playing with friends outside,
making snowmen, painting the snow
and having a good, old-fashioned
snowball fight at playtimes makes the
cold much easier to cope with and
we all concentrate much better on
our lessons when we come back
inside again. The children’s Winter
writing is very creative and a pleasure
to read when they have had such
good first hand experiences.
We wish you all the best and look
forward to inviting you to another
community day in the near future as
the last World War II day was such a
success.

Prayer of the Month – for those who work in dangerous places
Heavenly Father, by your mercy,
defend the people who work in places

them if trouble comes: In Jesus’ name.
Explore the Bible
The book of the prophet ISAIAH
relates to a period of some 300 years.
Chapters 1-39 are set in the closing
years of the Northern Kingdom while
the Southern Kingdom was still
relatively settled. Isaiah worked in
Jerusalem, the southern capital,
warning its people that God's
judgement must fall on them because
of social injustice and religious
hypocrisy. He advised dependence on
God's guidance and protection rather
than on temporary and shifting
political alliances with foreign nations.
For a while Jerusalem was spared the
same fate as the Northern Kingdom.
Chapters 40-55 (sometimes called
Second Isaiah) are concerned with
the Jewish exiles in Babylon. The
message is one of comfort: God is
about to do something new and the
punishment and pain of the past are
over. The return to the land of Israel
will recall the deliverance from Egypt.
In the final section, set in the period
after the Temple has been rebuilt,
there is evidence that the people are
in danger of slipping back into old
patterns of behaviour. Alongside
warnings is a vision of the greatness
of God and his plans for the salvation
of the Jews, and, through them, all
nations. These later chapters of
Isaiah, especially the ‘Servant Songs’
in chapters 42, 49, 50 and 52 must
have been much in Jesus’ mind as he
thought about the role he was taking
on, to represent the people, and
suffer and die for them. ‘He was
despised and rejected by men, a man
of sorrows, and acquainted with
grief..’ – familiar words uttered by a
lonely prophet to Jewish exiles in
Babylon, convinced that their stormtossed nation had been abandoned by
its God. To them Isaiah brought a
message of hope, telling of a
mysterious ‘servant of the Lord’ who
suffers beyond human endurance for
sins he didn’t commit, yet who lives
again to witness to the deliverance of
those for whom he died. These same
mysterious words came to life as the
followers of Jesus saw them fulfilled
so spectacularly in the suffering and
death of Jesus.

The doors open and into the empty

scruffy men and women you have

scruffy people rushing around smiling
but they are only the Crisis Christmas

resemble the condition the guests
were in when they arrived.
Once again this year I had the pleasure

Christmas week. As a clown and
entertainer I go and make balloons for
the guests and if they feel like it I show
them how to create the balloons for
themselves.
This year it was different with many
homeless being people like you and
me, who have simply fallen on hard
times. I met guests who were
previously volunteers and also one
lady I remember from 5 years ago
who has quit her addiction and got a
home of her own. She was there this
year as a volunteer and I was blown
away by the difference in her.
As I sit here looking out at the snow I
just wanted to remind myself and
perhaps others that although times
are hard we have so much to be
thankful for.

Parish Registers and Family History
Over the years many people have
come to look at the parish registers of
baptisms, weddings and burials in
Grimston from 1552 (Congham 1581,
Roydon 1721). But it’s now a legal
requirement that old parish registers
are kept in the county record office
rather than in individual churches. Our
three local parish churches have been
holding out against this, because most
people doing research into family
history like to use the internet rather
than going to the county record office
or employing a researcher to do it for
them. So the plan was to have all the
registers transcribed locally first.
It’s a huge task, and much of it has
been done, but not yet all. Some
registers have only been indexed to
surnames. But now with the advent
of digital photography, every page of
the registers has been photographed,
so that people can see not only view
pages of the registers, but purchase
jpg copies that they can file or print
for themselves to keep.
The registers are now at the Norfolk
Record Office, but the Rector holds
digital copies, transcripts and indexes
to help people find what they want
much more easily than going to the
NRO.
