educational sites that are safe
and fun for learning. If you
know of any please email them
my way and I will check them
out. I hope to have a nice list
for kids to have for the
holidays.
ALL students need to bring the appropriate clothing for winter weather.
Rules:
55 degrees to 44 degrees, students need to have long-sleeves or jackets.
45 degrees and below, students are to have coats, hats, and gloves no
exceptions.
Any student missing these items will not be allowed to play with
friends freely. They will need to stay inside.
Once the snow flies students not having boots when playground
conditions warrant must remain on the cement while outside.
NO EXCEPTIONS
From the Mouths of Babes…
A fifth grader asked Father last week during his classroom visits,
“Does God love Satan? And if God loves Satan, do we have to love
him?” Hmmm, wonder what Father said to that one!

The Ambo
The ambo is the focus area we see the readers stand. It is from this area that we proclaim the word of God.
I H S is on our ambo. These Greek letters are the monogram of the name of Jesus Christ.
Three weeks ago I went around the church and took pictures of different items and areas. I plan to share
them with the students at prayers and have discussions about them. Ask a St. James student what AMDG
and INRI stand for and I bet they can tell you!!
I will be sharing information from the following source

Feel free to log on and check it out!
Washington County Riverboat Foundation
A huge thanks to the Washington Riverboat Foundation!! On Wednesday, November
16th, Diana Flannery, Suzanne Horak, Wendy Miller, Amy Vetter, Karen Brandt and I
attended the Riverboat Foundation meeting. It was a very exciting event as we were
sure we would be receiving something from the Riverside Casino. As the grants were
being awarded the excitement grew as the dollar amounts kept rising. St. James was
awarded their FULL ASKING AMOUNT OF $35,864.00!!!!! We had the privilege of
school board president, Mike Driscoll, handing us our check. Thanks to Home and
School and the St. James Memorial fund we have an additional $6,500.00. This brings
our total to $42,364. for the purchase of 15 MacBooks, 15 iMacs, 15 iPads, Applecare
protection on each and two days of professional development for our staff!!!! This is a
huge step in the right direction to bring our students into 21st century learning!!

St. James Students in the News and on the Go!!
Macy Driscoll, Taylor Brinning, Kellie Dallmeyer, and Halle Barkema made the 10 and under softball
traveling team. 4 out of the 11 girls are St. Jamesers!!
St. James School graduate Gabe Greiner placed first in muzzleloader at the State 4-H Shooting Competition.
Lauren Lukavsy was the flower girl in her Aunt’s wedding on October 29th and did an awesome job. I bet
she looked beautiful!!!
Great Websites for Kids and Adults!
Thanks to several teachers and Sara Thompson for sharing sites. Below are sites with short
explanations. I have many other sites that have been shared, but do not have the descriptors on them
once I have descriptors I will add them as well!
www.zoodles.com
Zoodles keeps your child safe by engaging them with fun and educational activities that have been played
through in their entirety by our team of educational experts. Your child is blocked from visiting any other
pages. Zoodles believes that advertising to kids is wrong, so we developed the Zoodles Ad blocker, a tool that
strips out the ads on third-party sites that are targeting your child. The ad-blocking feature is free for a trial
period and then available only to Zoodles Premium Members.
www.spellingcity.com
Parents, you are able to put your child's weekly spelling words into the site and then your child can use those
words by taking a test, or play games that require them to spell their own words! What a fun way to work on
spelling!
www.catholicanswers.com is a good one for faith questions.
www.familyeducation.com Family Education - This site has some great resources and information about
being a parent in general. But, specifically, If you search at the top of the page by typing in "reading," it will
lead you to great games, articles and ideas!
www.readingrockets.org Reading Rockets - This site has a huge amount of great information! If you click
the "For Parents" tab at the top of the page, you will find a vast amount of helpful ideas and games to keep your
child reading! Check it out!
www.professorgarfield.org Professor Garfield - This site is just plain fun! There are many games and
activities that kids will enjoy on all subjects. I would recommend checking out the "Reading Ring" to help
older students think critically about sequencing a story. It is a game of organizing Garfield cartoons that have
been mixed up. The boxing theme is interesting to boys especially. I also would recommend the "Transport to
Reading" section. These games are primarily for students K-3, but could be helpful to all students. The
games focus on phonics skills and other helpful word and stories strategies.
www.starfall.com opened in September of 2002 as a free public service to teach children to read with phonics.
Our systematic phonics approach, in conjunction with phonemic awareness practice, is perfect for preschool,
kindergarten, first grade, second grade, special education, home school, and English language development
(ELD, ELL, ESL). Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children.

Kidzone
John and Sara Thompson have generously donated a cell phone, charger and car charger for the
purpose of Kidzone. Kidzone directors will have this cell phone on them from the time Kidzone starts
until Kidzone is complete.
The phone number is: 319-541-9922. If your child attends Kidzone and you would like your
phone number to be added to the phone for emergency purposes, please let me know and we will have
your number added.
This will assist in the event of emergencies or if you accidentally get locked out!
Please thank the Thompson family for their wonderful donation and care for our kids.
Please review our illness policy!!! In order for optimum learning to take place, a child needs to have adequate rest and be feeling well. If a child is not feeling well, not only is learning inhibited, but s/he is more vulnerable to infection. Sending a child to school who is sick or is not fully recovered also puts the other children at school as well as staff at risk. It is in the best interest of all for a child to be kept home in the event of illness. The school staff regarding student health will follow the following guidelines; •
99 degrees is considered a fever. •
A child with a fever or who has vomited or has diarrhea will be sent home. The child should not return for 24 hours from the time s/he was sent home. Parents of any child returned to school before 24 hours has lapsed, will be contacted to pick their child up and keep them home for the remainder of that school day. •
A child who is sent home is to be picked up promptly by an authorized adult.
The Giving Tree
The “Giving Tree” has grown in Tobin Hall!!!! Please see the thank you placed on it for the items given
already!!!! Check it out and help St James!!!!
What is it??
Well, it’s a bulletin board between the Church and Tobin Hall resembling a tree. As the seasons change so
will the items on the tree.
We are looking at bridging the gap between St. James Church and School by trying to create a Parish
environment. Many times there are small items needed for the classrooms that Parish families and St. James
parents may have at home or can pick up while out. This tree will have an item needed with a date for return
placed on the tree. You may take the item off the tree, purchase the item and bring it back into the St. James
School by the date indicated!

Poinsettia Orders
Now that Thanksgiving is nearly here, we are all thinking of Christmas! Don't forget to
order poinsettias by November 29. They make great gifts for friends, neighbors, family, and
yourself! Pick up for these plants will be in Tobin hall December 2. There are many great
varieties and sizes this year!
Also, please consider helping decorate our Church with lovely poinsettias! In placing an
order in memory of a loved one, you will make our church beautiful and help support our
school. These memorial plants will be delivered just in time for Christmas decorating and
all names of those we are remembering will be listed in the back of church. If you have any
questions feel free to contact Lynn Horak at 653-4080 or [email protected]
On Behalf of Home and School, Happy Thanksgiving - We have much to be thankful for at

Attitude
There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the
mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. "Well,"
she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today." So she did and she
had a wonderful day.
The next day

she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that
she had only one hair on her head. "Well," she said, "Today I'm
going to wear my hair in a pony tail." So she did and she had a
fun, fun day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that
there wasn't a single hair on her head. "YEAH!" she exclaimed. "I
don't have to fix my hair today!"
Attitude is everything... As the saying goes:
"The kind of life you will have isn't determined by what happens
to you; it is determined by your reaction to what happens to you."
Have a Good DAY.
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some
kind of battle.
