Nomination Form
Nomination Form for the 2012 Community Award Credit union, building society or mutual bank name Heritage Isle Credit Union Ltd Name of Sponsor (if applicable) Rachel Hodge and Karen Hinds Name of nominated institution’s CEO or General Manager Annette Griffin Postal Address PO Box 1256, Launceston, Tasmania, 7250 Phone & Fax Numbers Ph 03 6334 9411 Fax 03 6334 9511 Email address [email protected] Credit union, building society or mutual bank history Heritage Isle Credit Union was founded by a group of Comalco (an aluminium smelter at Bell Bay in Northern Tasmania) employees in 1965 and since then we have grown to a membership in excess of 7000. Heritage Isle is a community credit union, open to all but primarily servicing the needs of residents of Northern Tasmania, with three branches in locations throughout the Tamar Valley. At Heritage Isle Credit Union our Mission Statement is: “To enhance the financial well-being of members by being their preferred provider of financial services of quality and value, in keeping with the organisation’s long term stability.” Community Award Nomination Form 2 Name the specific community activity that forms the basis of this nomination Vinnies CEO Sleepout for St Vincent de Paul Society This event entails CEOs congregating at a local sporting stadium and sleeping out on a winter’s night, on nothing but a piece of cardboard and a sleeping bag. The idea of this is to try and replicate the insecurity of members of our community who deal with being homeless every night. The fact that the homeless are denied the basic human right to appropriate housing, which leads to feelings of insecurity, vulnerability to illness and to violence is a cause that touched our hearts and warranted our commitment to the cause. “On behalf of Australia’s homeless, thank you to the 1,033 CEOs who rose to the challenge and slept out in capital cities across Australia on Thursday 21st June 2012. More than five million dollars will go directly to Vinnie’s homeless services across the country.” Our CEO Annette Griffin is participating in the Vinnies CeO sleep Out in June this year. Post-event comment, courtesy of www.ceosleepout.org.au and donate* here or online at www.ceosleepout.org.au donations are tax deductable * Community Award Nomination Form 3 “Thank you for rising to the challenge and helping to address the issue of homelessness. As you sleep out tonight with only a piece of cardboard to rest on and a sleeping bag to keep you warm, think of the many Tasmanians for whom this is a harsh reality every night. We hope that as you leave in the morning and head back to your families, secure jobs and the comfort of a safe place to call home, that you think about how we can all continue to work together to change someone’s life for the better. Tonight will raise crucial funds that help Vinnies provide material, educational and emotional support to many hundreds of Tasmanians doing it tough. May the investment you make tonight encourage you to think of ways that your organisation can make a real impact on addressing homelessness in the longer term.” Courtesy “Your Guide to Sleeping Out 2012” Community Award Nomination Form 4 How long has the CU/BS/MB been involved with this activity? The first Vinnies CEO Sleepout was held in Tasmania on 16 June 2011, 73 business and community leaders participated across Tasmania and $168k was raised. In 2012, the event was condensed to Launceston only, at which 52 CEOs took part. This year Tassie raised $116k. Heritage Isle’s CEO Annette Griffin participated in both events raising $1,300 in 2011 in a mere 7 days with an awesome effort in 2012 raising $9,168. Community Award Nomination Form Participation came about as a recommendation from Karen Hinds, a Branch Supervisor with Heritage Isle, who has participated in a Volunteer capacity in both 2011 and 2012. 5 Define the values that are exemplified by this community activity Participation in this event has many of the core values of Heritage Isle reflected, from staff involvement and team work to the support we received from the local community, in particular the business community. This event was touted as the first ever fundraiser held by Heritage Isle and one we are keen to continue. Heritage Isle are currently working hard under the guidance of a new CEO to establish firm ties to the community and to give back to the people who are loyal to our institution. The opportunity to develop partnerships from this event is one we want to embrace with both hands. We have held discussions with BLH Group Of Companies and LJ Hooker Launceston regarding the possibility of ongoing partnerships. This will include access to employees and their business and two-way referrals. The following key principles have shone through during the course of this activity; •Passionate staff •Community Engagement •Building Values •Key partnerships Has the program been a success and how has that been assessed? Success of this event has been gauged via a number of mediums; • Dollar amount raised • Second highest fundraiser is Tasmania from 52 CEOs • 70 attendees at Heritage Isle’s inaugural fundraising event • Number of donors to our auction (see Appendices Two and Three) • Community reaction and feedback • Clear demonstration of social responsibility “The fundraising side of the Sleepout really gave me a buzz, after a 5 minute phone call to Shane Gill I had a four wheel motor bike as a donation, I was like a kid I was so excited. I am very overwhelmed and very proud to have been involved as a Volunteer at the Sleepout event and to be nominating for this award almost makes me a bit teary with pride” From Karen Hinds, Beaconsfield Branch Supervisor Community Award Nomination Form 6 How have staff been involved in this community activity? The event was headed from our regional Beaconsfield branch. Tasks to ensure the best possible result from the experience included (but were not limited to); • Addressing a staff meeting introducing the activity and to create enthusiasm for the cause • C ollection tins at all branches plus in the community, staff at all levels demonstrated their passion for the cause by encouraging donation • C ontacted BLH Group of Companies, a local company with long ties to the Credit Union. The Director, Shane Gill had participated in the event in 2011. During discussions last year he had indicated that he had actual firsthand experience of homelessness when he was younger. Phone contact was made to discuss whether he would be willing to donate to our auction. We were astonished at his generosity, as he donated a $8.2K four wheel motor bike. This became our major drawcard. Shane Gill , from BLH Group of Companies donated a $8.2K four wheel motor bike. This became our major drawcard. •Coordinated advertising, including our website rotator, statement message, product of the month, local radio and newspaper. • Held a cocktail party with auctions (silent and called) as our major fundraiser. Business members were approached for donations of auction items for (see Appendix One). These letters were hand delivered to allow staff to not only convey our passion for the cause, but as an opportunity to network among our established membership. Community Award Nomination Form 7 • C old called, in person to businesses in the Launceston CBD, many of whom we had no relationship with previously. The response was overwhelming. This was undertaken by our CEO and Karen Hinds (head of project). This was an opportunity to establish a rapport with potential clients and again highlight Heritage Isle’s social responsibility values. • P ut together silent and called auction list and packaged lot numbers (see Appendices Two and Three) • Sourced an auctioneer • P ersonally issued invitations to all businesses that supported us by way of donations plus any interested members. This was a great way to encourage involvement by all branch staff. • O rganised Cupcake Day, for which branch staff made and sold cupcakes to members to raise additional funds. • Formulated a support email forwarded to CEOs network requesting online donations • A ddressed staff meeting post event with the results, but more importantly to try and communicate the way it made us feel to head this project. On Cupcake Day, branch staff made and sold cupcakes to members to raise additional funds. Community Award Nomination Form 8 “Best wishes in your fundraising efforts, Annette, and here’s hoping for a mild Tassie night for you! Cheers from all at Encore Theatre.” “Well done (again) Annette. Massive effort. Best wishes from the team at CGU.” “Good luck Annette! Big pat on the back for doing a ‘good deed’ as there are so many homeless and disadvantaged people in Launceston and the average person probably is very naive to notice. Will be thinking of you especially if it rains.” Di Brozek – TG Financial “Good luck Annette! I don’t know how you find the time and energy for this on top of everything else you do. Very inspirational! Well done and I hope you reach your target.” The Summers Family (Netball relationship) The cocktail party (with the silent and called auctions) was our major fundraising event. Community Award Nomination Form 9 Does this activity provide a point of difference for the CU/BS/MB in the community? Heritage Isle were one of only two Financial Institutions that participated in the event, from a possible 10 institutions across Tasmania. This clearly demonstrated a point of difference, namely; • social responsibility • community support • passion for a cause • local ties • building of relationships Does the community support the activity? Support for this activity has been overwhelming, this is particularly evident through; • the large donations from BLH Group of Companies • securing of an auctioneer at short notice when we had no established ties with this organisation • money raised • total number of donors 44 Do you have plans to continue this community activity? The CEO Sleepout now forms part of Heritage Isle’s Marketing plan, as one of four major events in our calendar. We will continue to establish firm strategies around these events to ensure we meet a clear set of goals. Other reasons why this community activity should be recognised by the industry? As a mutual, Heritage Isle’s management structure recognises that in order to ensure ongoing viability, first and foremost we need to ensure growth of our membership base. To achieve this we are working on establishing a set of core values which better represent our focus. Community ties and support are very important in this set of values and are clearly in line with the Vinnies CEO Sleepout event. The overwhelming feeling at the conclusion of the event is one of great pride in our achievements; the excitement of watching the tally board grow, the adrenaline that we took into our first ever fundraising event - the cocktail party and auction, cementing of relationships both with staff and with the community, establishment of partnerships that we aim to build our client base on in the years to come and none more important than the aches and pains felt by our CEO Annette Griffin and Volunteer Karen Hinds after sleeping out on their piece of cardboard. Community Award Nomination Form 10 “Again, well done for your efforts, I feel it’s so important to make an effort to help others especially in financially tighter times. We all get so busy doing day to day activities with our jobs and personal lives, it’s so important to take the time out to help those less fortunate. So well done, we’ll be thinking of Annette on Thursday night doing the CEO sleep out and wishing her well.” Nicole Edwards Business Development Manager LJ Hooker, Launceston “I think my most memorable feeling after this whole experience is that of adrenaline at the Cocktail party and auction , having to network with a range of people that had come out on a winter’s night to support both Heritage Isle and the Vinnie’s CEO Sleep out cause, trying to take entry monies, sell raffle tickets, talk up the motorbike, network and bid myself was such a moment of pride, not only helping a great cause but of the display of teamwork and that real sense of achievement. Well done HICU team!” From Rachel Hodge, Beaconsfield Branch Manager Community Award Nomination Form 11 As we so often take for granted our everyday lives, families & career, it is so rewarding to be able to provide homeless people the opportunity of a good meal or a warm friendly environment to spend the night. To see each year the increased number of children and women that are homeless, has given me the drive to stand up and build awareness of homelessness. To see the team work and enthusiasm displayed by my team was reward within itself. Each little win was celebrated no matter how small or large. We are united in our efforts and our goal has been achieved not with dollar value but the pride and relationship we hold within the community and the outstanding support of local people. I commenced my career 26 years ago at Aluminium Credit Union, now known as Heritage Isle. I have so many wonderful memories of the great personal relationships I have built with the community and staff at HICU, that I would not trade for anything. The continued support I receive from my team is unexplainable and touching, we will continue to demonstrate our core values and support our members the best way we know, through being focused, committed, dedicated and involved in our community. Without the commitment and dedication shown by Rachel & Karen we would not have achieved what we have. Their loyalty to HICU, leadership, heart and passion to this project gave it the success it deserved. “A true sense of achievement” Annette Griffin Chief Executive Officer Heritage Isle Credit Union Ltd Community Award Nomination Form 12 APPENDIX ONE CEO SLEEPOUT DONATION LETTER 1st Floor, 69 St John Street, Laun ceston 7250 12th June 2012 Dear Business Owner, Did you know Homelessnes s affects 7500 families in Aus tralia… including 34,000 children!
