Volunteering It Does a Body Good.
Another year is upon us and January
has already come and gone. As we look
forward to spring flowers, green grass and
warm sunlight - some members of the
community are looking much further ahead, to
August.
Of course, I am speaking of the annual Kelly
“Little Green Men” Days Festival. Planning
has already started. Meetings are already
taking place. The never ending hunt for
volunteers has begun.
As always, all volunteers are welcome to
assist with the festival.
Whether you can assist with building props,
selling drinks or just offering suggestions at a
meeting - all volunteers are welcome and
greatly appreciated. For volunteer information,
contact Joann at 270- 881-8843. You can also
send us a message on our Facebook page
titled Kelly “Little Green Men” Days or an
email at [email protected]. Our
next meeting is Tuesday Feb 21, 2012 at
Kelly Holiness Church on Kelly Church Rd at
6pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

members. A special thanks to Instructors Tom Beeker and James "JD" Smith.
Kelly Community Emergency Response Team

Kelly CERT recently received thousands in new equipment and supplies to ensure we are "Ready
and Prepared" for this winter season. Kelly CERT, CERT III is actively seeking new volunteers that
are willing to help the Kelly community in the event of any emergencies or natural disasters. New

Kelly Neighborhood Watch
The Kelly Neighborhood Watch remains active and successful. Sheriff Livy Leavel l reported
that due to the active participation of the citizens of Kelly that crime had decreased in the
community and EOC calls from citizens in north Christian county have increased about 50%.
The Kelly Community Organization, Inc committee voted to purchase 4 additional
Neighborhood Watch signs of the "blue eye" design (pictured above) to be placed on Johnson
Mill Road, Woodburn Hay Road, Cavanaugh Lane, & Sparkman Road. The Pennyrile
Regional Citizens Corps Council donated one sign to replace a damaged Neighborhood
Watch sign at the intersection of Johnson Mill Road and Woodburn Hay Road.
The Crofton Community held a Neighborhood Watch Training on Tuesday, November 1,
2011. CPT Chris Miller, Certified Neighborhood Watch Trainer from the Christian County
Sheriff's department presented the 2 hour Neighborhood Watch Tool kit training with more
than 100 Crofton residents in attendance. With Crofton onboard with Neighborhood Watch
their efforts will indirectly impact the Kelly community. The more thieves, drug users/dealers
and other criminals are captured the less likely they will commit crimes in our communities.
Soon the word will spread though the criminal grapevine that North Christian county is NOT
the place for them to go and commit crime....that those folks up there are fighting back!

Welcome To Kelly, Kentucky
The Kelly Community would like to welcome a new family to the neighborhood. John and
Tina Story have moved into the Kelly Community and are purchasing property in the 8200 area of
Madisonville Rd. John is retired from the work force and is looking towards spring to start a small
hobby farm. He plans to raise chickens and have a large garden to support his families self
sustainability. Tina is employed at Martinrea factory and greets everyone with a bright smile and
cheerful greeting. Also living with them are their daughter, Tiffany Guy and grandson Ryan. Tiffany
is employed at Douglas AutoTech Factory. Ryan is an adorable toddler and enjoys helping
grandpa around the house.
Take a moment to say hello to your neighbors. Wave if you see them outside and remember to
check on each other during disasters. It is our hope that the Kelly community maintains the old
fashioned values of neighbors helping neighbors. Volunteer with your Neighborhood Watch
program and CERT team to keep our neighborhood safe for your family and friends.
If you know of any new families to the Kelly Community, please send the information to us at
[email protected]. We would like to welcome all of our new residents and hope they
become part of the Kelly family.
Send us your news tip.

"Little Green Men" Days festival (cont)
The dates for the 2nd annual Kelly “Little Green Men” Days festival is Friday August 17
beginning at 5pm, and Saturday August 18 from 8am-8pm.
The Friday night portion of the festival is a special event added on for this year. The
evening begins at 5pm. The first event of the evening is the talented Kayla Nettles, recently
returned from the current season of American Idol. You may remember her singing the National
Anthem and a short set at the festival last year. This year she appears on stage from
approximately 5-7:30pm with a full band. From there, the night only gets better…..However, we
are not releasing any more information about Friday night yet. We can’t let all of our secrets out
this early in the year, can we? Stay tuned to our Facebook page for hints and announcements!
Saturday we once again get things started with all vendor booths being opened at 8am.
The day will be filled with surprises, contests and many more vendors than last year. Music!
Lots of music will fill the stage all day! During the opening ceremonies, you will hear Jordan
Carter show our pride with the National Anthem, then he will take the stage a bit later for a late
morning concert.
The ‘Glennie Lankford Outdoor Gospel Sing’ will be held in the afternoon. We have the honor of
having 3 Nails 4 Given performing for us. Be sure to join the community in praise! Keeping the
music going, for the late afternoon concert we welcome a former OSU Basketball star turned
Country music artist. Towering at 6’10”, you can’t miss Matt Marinchick - and you won’t want to!
Finally, as the evening winds down and the air cools off a bit, we present to you the headliner
artist of the festival. Enter Bryan Edwards. With strong faith and deep southern roots, Bryan
has been called ‘country music personified’. But then again….music is not all the festival has to
offer. There will be many surprises at this year's festival. Details will be released throughout the
summer.
If you haven’t already, Please make your way to our Facebook page and ‘LIKE’ the page.
Then, if you would kindly ‘SHARE’ the page.
Please help us spread the word about the festival. Remember, this is YOUR festival, to support
YOUR community. Proceeds are going towards the planning, building and maintaining a
community park for you, the residents of Kelly KY. A community park, learning center and fire
department substation are the ultimate goals of the Kelly Community Org, Inc. Show your pride,
support your festival and support your community.
For information on future Kelly “Little Green Men” Days festivals, to volunteer, or have any
other questions, contact Joann Smithey at 270-881-8843 or Frank Brown at 270-885-1530.

Uncovering a scam
The Senate is investigating deceptive sweepstakes
practices. These companies target the elderly and make
them think they will receive a bunch of money, but in
reality they never see any of it.
The most popular of these scams is called Social
Security.

She simply replied, "No peer pressure."
Redneck wants to fight
There were some backwoods hillbillies living across the river
from each other, who feuded constantly. John hated Clarence
with a passion and never passed up a chance to throw rocks
across the river at Clarence. This went on for years until one
day the Corps of Engineers came to build a bridge across that
river. John was elated; he told his wife that finally he was going
to get the chance to cross over and whip Clarence.
He left the house and returned in a matter of minutes. His wife
asked what was wrong, didn't he intend to go over the bridge
and whip Clarence? He replied that he never had really seen
Clarence up close and didn't realize his size until he started
over the bridge and saw the sign: "CLEARANCE 8 FT 3 IN"

Volunteering
It Does a Body Good
Perhaps the first and biggest benefit people
get from volunteering is the satisfaction of
making a difference in their community.
However, there is also growing research that
shows volunteering provides individual health
benefits in addition to social benefits.
Those who volunteer have lower mortality
rates, greater functional ability, and lower
rates of depression later in life than those who
do not volunteer.
Some of these findings also indicate that
volunteers who devote a “considerable”
amount of time to volunteer activities (about
100 hours per year) are most likely to exhibit
positive health outcomes.
from nationalservice.gov
Volunteering is a fun and easy way to explore
your interests and passions. Doing volunteer work
you find meaningful and interesting can be a
relaxing, energizing escape from your day-to-day
routine of work, school, or family commitments.
Volunteering also provides you with renewed
creativity, motivation, and vision that can carry
over into your personal and professional life.
Consider your goals and interests
You will have a richer and more enjoyable
volunteering experience if you first take some
time to identify your goals and interests. Start by
thinking about why you want to volunteer. Also
think about what you would enjoy doing.
Volunteer opportunities that match both your
goals and your interests are most likely to be fun
and fulfilling for you.
Tips for Getting Started Volunteering
First, ask yourself if there is something specific
you want to do.
For example, do I want…
…to make it better around where I live
…to meet people who are different from me
…to try something new
…to do something with my spare time
…to see a different way of life and new places
…to have a go at the type of work I might want to
do as a full-time job
…to do more with my interests and hobbies
…to do something I’m good at
The best way to volunteer is to match your
personality and interests. Having answers to these
questions will help you narrow down your search.

Many people volunteer in order to make time for
hobbies outside of work as well. For instance, if
you have a desk job and long to spend time
outdoors, you might consider volunteering to help
plant a community garden, lead local hikes, or
help at a children’s camp.
