Endowment Council Chair John Stock, a local attorney and parent of four, was our host for the casual event held at the Columbus Brewing Company. Attendees included local professionals in the banking, insurance, financial planning, accounting and legal fields. Scott Hartman, Director of Development at the Catholic Foundation, came to answer questions about the various endowment options available to BWHS donors. “In meeting with our Endowment Council, all agreed that the biggest impact to the Bishop Watterson Planned Giving program will come from heightening awareness of the opportunities available to leave a lasting legacy to future BWHS students,” John observed. “With this event, we began the process of networking with financial professionals, including those in banking, accounting, financial planning, and law, to provide information about the planned giving opportunities available to help Bishop Watterson.” In partnership with the Catholic Foundation, BWHS offers many planned giving opportunities including bequests, beneficiary designation of an IRA, 401(k) or life insurance policy, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, charitable gift annuities, and gifts of appreciated assets. Those donors who demonstrate a commitment to the future of our school with a gift to our planned giving program will become members of the Pope John Paul II Legacy Society, entitling them to unique honorary gifts, invitations to exclusive recognition events, and special appreciation at the Heritage Day Mass and luncheon held in the fall each year. The Council plans to host more of these events, with the concurrent goal of developing a Scott Hartman, Catholic Foundation Director of Development Financial Advisors Network Membership Directory for distribution to the Bishop Watterson community. If you are a Watterson alum or parent who serves in any of these capacities and would like to become more involved with this project, please contact Jen Bernard Rasor ’81 in the Advancement/Alumni Department to add your name to our list of advisors and to receive invitations to the upcoming Financial Advisors Network events. A Touch of New Orleans Fr. Tony Ricard recently brought a touch of New Orleans to Bishop Watterson High School. A nationally known speaker and pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea in New Orleans, Fr. Ricard challenged students to remember that they were created in God’s image and to live their faith by serving others. The senior leadership team invited Fr. Ricard to Bishop Watterson after hearing his keynote address during the National Catholic Youth Conference which was held in Columbus in 2007. Senior leader Molly Vlahakis said, “Father Tony has a special talent of opening teenagers’ eyes to all the possibilities of our faith. He is able to connect this message of God’s love for us to a more current viewpoint of life. He just has a carefree way of getting you to feel comfortable. His method is different than a Sunday sermon, but his message is still true and heartfelt.” Fr. Ricard shared with students the ongoing struggle of his parish and parish community to recover after Hurricane Katrina. He stressed how important it has been for Our Lady Star of the Sea to call people who lived in the neighborhood back to the community. There have been many struggles, Fr. Ricard said, as they have worked to rebuild their parish, their community and their lives. Bishop Watterson students are raising funds to benefit the parish in their recovery. Eagle Review Newsletter - June 2009 5 would never know why I did the things I did. My cancer experience truly made me who I am today. Alumni Spotlight Carolyn Koncal ‘98 Carolyn Koncal graduated from Bishop Watterson High School in 1998 but entered here as a freshman with a larger question than “who’s homeroom will I be in?” Her concerns and mission were to beat cancer! Carolyn continued her education at The Ohio State University where she graduated in 2002. This is her story and how she dealt with this illness and how she turned it into something positive as well as into a career. Zoology degree in 2002. During my last year at Ohio State, I completed an internship working with Dolphin Carolyn’s Story: While still in the hospital with my original diagnosis, I realized there was a reason I was picked by God for this. I knew I was going to lose my hair, and I was all right with that since I didn’t like it anyway; it was much too thin. I also knew, as an 8th grader, I would not have to complete my science fair project and that was a happy moment. Part of those early moments were mixed with emotions; I had classmates who came to the hospital to surprise me on my 14th birthday, but others who did not know what to make of this and as they continued with their uninterrupted lives, I became isolated. Starting Watterson bald made me stand out from everyone, and being known as the bald one was not always a great way to be known. As much as I enjoyed my high school years, I did feel different than my classmates. I viewed life differently than they did; my priorities had changed. After high school I decided to go to O.S.U. and graduated with a 6 Carolyn Koncal Therapy. I saw how animals could be used to help people and decided to go back to school for a Recreational Therapy degree. I knew that I could make a career out of combining my desire to help others and my love of animals if I became a Recreational Therapist. During graduate school, I also got first-hand experience on how animals can help when my dog became a certified therapy dog and we visited hospitals and nursing homes. I was also fortunate to intern with adult cancer patients and realized then that my world had truly become entwined with the cancer world. I always knew this because as I tried to hide my cancer from people I met, I realized that if they did not know that part of me, they Over the past 5 years, I have started to focus more on increasing cancer awareness. I joined Team in Training, which is part of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and ran my first half marathon (13.1 miles) to raise $5,000 for cancer research in honor of Jon Koeninger. Jon was a Watterson student who died December 26, 1995 from undiagnosed leukemia, the same diagnosis I had. Jon’s dad is one of my first memories of realizing why I was still alive and had survived cancer. I was able to help him realize that as a parent there was nothing he could have done differently to keep his son from getting cancer. I just remember him telling me that the doctors and nurse told him this, but that I was the first person he believed since I had leukemia, too. A few years later I trained again and continued to raise awareness and money for Team in Training. I ran my second half marathon in memory of the one girl who became my friend during my clinic visits who died before she was 21. In 2006, I moved to Chapel Hill, NC to work as a Recreational Therapist and now work with pediatric cancer patients; I use my experience to help my patients, as they too become members of what I call the “cancer community.” While in Chapel Hill, I have become chairman on the Adolescent and Young Adult workgroup for the NC Comprehensive Cancer Program. This past May, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet many other cancer survivors through the I’m Too Young For This! Cancer Foundation, also known as i2y. i2y is a one of a kind organization dedicated to young adults Eagle Review Newsletter - June 2009 affected by cancer. I have become a passionate member of this organization, because I know first hand how cancer can isolate you from the rest of the world. I want to make sure others don’t have to wait as long as I did (I waited 14 years) to find a group like this one. i2y is only two years old and I want to make the world aware that i2y is out there. I hope anyone who is reading this article and knows someone who could benefit from i2y will visit their website www.stupidcancer.com for additional information. On February 28, 2009, I lost my hair again. This time on purpose; I shaved my head at a St. Baldrick’s Foundation, head shaving event. St. Baldrick’s raises money for childhood cancer research. I have shaved my head for three reasons: 1. I’m a childhood cancer survivor. Cancer research helped save my life and I want to make sure research continues until we have a cure. 2. I have shaved my head in support of my friend, Amanda, who was 28 when she passed away after fighting pancreatic cancer for five years. 3. I loved being bald. I always knew one day I would shave my head again and February 28th was the day! I have always viewed my cancer as a blessing and often thank God for the wonderful opportunities I’ve had because of it. I look forward to what the future brings. Jason Janoski ‘82 Jason, founder and CEO of Columbus based creative services firm, Attaché, has been named the recipient of the National Biomedical Achievement Award for 2009 by the American Red Cross National Headquarters. Janoski traveled to Washington D.C. to receive his award in a ceremony on March 26. An active board member for the Central Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross for the past six years, Janoski first began volunteering in 1998. “I’ve been a blood donor since high school,” said Janoski “and, initially, I simply wanted to use my creative talent to increase donorship. But over time, as I’ve learned more about the organization, I’ve been able to contribute more as well.” A major area of focus for Jason has been the leadership of a joint committee among area hospitals and the Red Cross to further solidify and strengthen their partnership to better serve patients in need. “We are learning more about our customers every day, and exploring challenging topics”, Janoski said. his work with the regional High School Scholarship Program which recognizes young donors for their contributions. “The Red Cross is willing to change and grow and stretch…to do things differently. That is a difficult process, but the payoff can be enormous, and I admire their ability to challenge themselves in that way,” said Janoski. “Working with the Red Cross, everyone is willing to explore the unknown. That is fun and exciting for me, and I get to learn a lot, too.” Jason Janoski He interacts with key hospital leadership on behalf of the Red Cross, and ensures the entire team maintains a focus on patient care. His skills in communications, marketing, sales and relationship management have been vital to the group. “When parties have different interests or ideas, he has the uncanny ability to bring a unique perspective to the solution process,” said Dr. Ambrose Ng, CEO of the Central Ohio Region. The money provides food for the hungry and loans those wishing to start a new life. From just passing the bowl around twice a week, Mr. Fry’s classes have been able to Faculty Spotlight Mr. Michael Fry, 13 year veteran freshman theology teacher at Bishop Watterson High School, recently received the Jessing Alumnus of the Year Award from the Pontifical College Josephinum, located in Worthington. Mr. Fry had studied at the Josephinum Theologate in the early 1980’s pursing course work for a Masters of Divinity and studying for the priesthood for the Diocese of AltoonaJohnstown, Pennsylvania. In addition to his studies he participated in the drama and music program as he pursued service and developed a love for the history of the Josephinum and its founder, Msgr. Joseph Jessing. Michael Fry In the 1990’s the Josephinum’s archivist, Msgr. Gerald F. Durst, retired from this position shortly before his death. This retirement opened the way for the Josephinum to hire Mr. Fry for this position, part time, as he continued to teach full time at Bishop Watterson. Mr. Fry did his master’s thesis on the archives of the Josephinum. 8 During his time as archivist Mr. Fry has preserved the “treasures” of the Josephinum. Aided by the knowledge he received in getting his Masters in Library Science with a specialty in preservation of historical materials from Kent State, he has sorted and inventoried many of the items of the Josephinum’s history left by his predecessor. In addition he has transferred many photos to CD’s, preserved correspondence and records in fireproof safes and non-acidic folders and organized the massive task of ordering the original drawings and blueprints of the present Josephinum structure. As archivist, Mr. Fry contributed to the Ohio Memory Project for the bicentennial of the State of Ohio; the submissions provided by the Josephinum can be seen at www.ohiomemory.org, searching under “Jessing.” Because of this dedication to the Josephinum, over and above the requirements of the job and because of his excellent rapport with the alumni, the Rector of the Josephinum, Msgr. Paul Langsfeld, awarded Mr. Fry this honor on their fall Alumni Day in mid-October. Operation Rice Bowl by Joseph Meeks Every Wednesday and Friday during Lent, Mr. Fry, a theology teacher at Bishop Watterson, has been passing around a “rice bowl” in all his classes. Operation Rice Bowl is just one of the many ways that Catholic Relief Services raises money. The money, after being collected and counted, goes to places as far away as the raise $411.23 for this great cause. Mr. Fry told his freshman students that they have made an excellent Lent by giving alms, fasting and praying. Class of 1962 Celebrating the past, present and future…The ’62 “girls” meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month at Bravos on Hayden Run for dinner at 6:00 p.m., but in December it is usually at Jennie Diorio Murnane’s lovely home in Worthington. Our mystery guest this year was Santa! aka Jim Tippett ’62 with his wife Peg, who is our honorary member. Our little group has expanded; all of the gals of ’62 are welcome and in the past year several have joined the original “regulars”. Missing from the picture are Sally Miller, Phyllis Rawlins Harper (who came after the picture was taken) and Linda Pyle Mahoney who passed away in January ’09. Each time we meet, it is a reaffirmation of the gifts of God: family, friends and faith which Linda modeled in every way. On a happier note, Kathy Strickfaden married Bobby Fracasso in February ’09. Track and Cross Country 5k Run The 3rd Annual Bishop Watterson and Whetstone Alumni Track and Cross Country 5k Run will be held Saturday, July 25, 2009. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Whetstone track and loops around the Park of Roses. The fun summer event is open to all students and their families from both Bishop Watterson and Whetstone High Schools. Many alumni in the past have participated in this event. For more information contact the cross-country coaches at either school or Matt McGowan at [email protected] or (740) 587-0376. Last year’s race results and photos were posted on www.runohio.com. He would love to see Half Way Home take off and start making some real money, but for right now it is a work in progress. Student Spotlight Latin News Maggie Wilson, a freshman from Immaculate Conception Parish, earned a perfect score on the 2009 National Latin Exam. Maggie does not have any previous language training. The last time this was achieved was four years ago. Maeve Wall, a senior from Immaculate Conception Parish, Caitlin Masty, a senior from St. Brendan Parish, and Maria Ricaurte, a senior from St. Peter Parish, have all earned their fourth consecutive gold medals and will receive the prestigious Oxford Classical Dictionary. There were also three other gold medal winners; Caitlin Willett, Lyndsey Faherty and Alyssa Morell. Congratulations to all of our Latin Scholars! Patrick Cantwell, a freshman from St. Andrew parish, started a skateboard company. Patrick has been skating for about two years and had the idea in the back of his mind to start a skateboard company. He located a website that made it possible to do this. He designs the merchandise, they sell it on their site, and he gets a portion of the profit. It was the perfect way to start a company with no actual manufacturing to worry about since he just provides the artwork. With the site he makes mainly skateboard decks and shirts with his graphics on them. Since he started the company he has not had the money to advertise his product. So for now he sells his product through a free webhosting site with the address www.halfwayhome.webs.com. Eventually Patrick would like Elaine Berman, a senior from Immaculate Conception parish, says, “Dance is what I am made of and I can’t wait to do it the rest of my life. This is my senior year and dancing has been my main priority within and outside of Watterson.” In school, Elaine has been captain of the dance team, involved in the drama and spring musical, and even choreographed a piece for the spring choir. Elaine played Cha Cha DiGregorio, the obnoxious dancer, in the musical Grease, her favorite role to date! Elaine has also played one of the six merry murdereresses in The Cell Block Tango, from the Broadway Chicago, in the talent show. Outside of school, she has interned as a dancer with the grand show Vaud Villities. Besides working, Elaine has volunteered to dance for a Christian show called Miracle Dancer which raises money for women with cervical cancer. Her prior training was with BalletMet Columbus, where she performed The Nutcracker yearly. Elaine will be attending The Ohio State University and majoring in modern dance. Jazz vocalist/composer, Laura Brunner ’02 (currently residing in New York City) and actress/singer, Erin Thomas ’97 (currently residing in Chicago) traveled back to Watterson to perform and impressed the audience with their talented vocals. Band students served as wait staff and mingled with guests. Over $10,000 was raised to benefit the furnishing and finishing of the new Band Room. Vision 2012 Retreat Dear Friends of Watterson, Having just attended our third annual planning retreat, and as I step down as the chair of the Steering Committee, I would like to reflect on where we have been and list some of the accomplishments we have achieved! In 1997 or so, Ron Shay, our original advancement/alumni leader, pulled together a group that helped him advance the school by working with him primarily on fund raising ideas. This group tossed around the idea of doing a major addition to the school, the first since the 22 ’70’s. A plan was developed and a price tag of over $10 million was thrown out. How in the heck would we ever be able to do this? Our previous history with fund raising only netted us around $1 million 10 years earlier. In 2000 when Marian became principal, she brought with her the belief that we could achieve much more! The advancement committee started to meet more regularly and a feasibility study was performed. The results found, after talking to many friends of Watterson, that there was strong support for the school but it was not very vocal or visible and that they thought that our fund raising potential was around $4 million. Over time a commitment was made to move ahead with fund raising and construction, with Phase 1 of the plan breaking ground in 2005 and finishing in 2006. With this under our belt, we decided to think longer term. What is our long term dream for Watterson? How can we make it a reality? So in the summer of 2007 we had our first planning retreat. Several of the advancement Eagle Review Newsletter - June 2009 committee and school leaders attended, led by Michael Colburn as our facilitator. There were about 15 of us and we answered the question “What is our vision for Watterson in 2012, five years down the road?” We came up with several exciting ideas. Most importantly, we understood that we needed to develop the volunteer leadership at Watterson to help us achieve this vision. We needed to develop committees with friends of Watterson who have specific skills to help us achieve our goals! With this in mind we established several councils; Marketing, Facilities, Alumni, Advancement and Capital Campaign, and a central Steering Committee, to coordinate the overall activities. Over the last few years we have had two more retreats where we have measured our progress against our stated goals. What we have learned is exciting! First, we have confirmed that What have we achieved through all of these efforts? I believe that the most significant achievement so far is that a large number of people now BELIEVE that we can achieve our vision for Watterson because we have laid the right foundation of having a strong What caused them to do this? It became pretty clear for me. They invested in creating a strong vision, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and they put a tremendous amount of effort into building the supporting structure to make it a reality. It teers all working together to create an exciting, welcoming, Catholic environment that really made me as a parent want to have my son attend Watterson. The Marketing Committee helped take this event to a higher level because of the expertise and passion of several First Row: Marian Hutson, Lynn Winters, Deacon Chris Campbell, Laura Fisher and Michele Brown Second Row: Chris Hilty, Angela Thurman, Jen Rasor, Rob Camp, Jim Cunningham, TinaMarie Donnelly, Jane Boeckman, Dan Eddingfield, Julie Keckstein and Tim Bender Third Row: Suzy Echenrode, Bill Weisner, Ginny O’Connor, Joe Hill, Rick Jeric, Jonathan Fortkamp, Michael Colburn, Tom Benadum, Greg Bauer, John Echenrode, John Stock, Leo Grimes, Sam Merkle and Dan Lorenz Not Pictured: Deacon Frank Iannarino, Vince Lombardo, Jim Negron, Shawn O’Reilly, Mike Roark and Ed Walsh there is a huge untapped resource available to us of very talented friends of Watterson. Second, when we organize them properly and put them on the right council, their energy can be harnessed to do great things, to take Watterson to the next level and achieve our vision! Third, there has been the need to adjust our structure and to integrate with other parts of the school, such as school board, and to add councils, Finance, and IT and perhaps a Co-Curricular Council. Fourth, we have seen the need to change. This has taken strong leadership. Marian and the leadership staff have opened the books, adjusted the way things are done, and developed new habits with the input of these councils. organization with a clear vision! It is not just Marian’s vision any more; there were 35 people who invested all day at our third retreat because they believe! This past winter I spent many hours watching and reading the John Adams HBO series and reading the book about his life. One of my take-a-ways from that experience was the courage and sacrifice with which he and so many others acted. He was in Philadelphia planning for the future of this great country while his wife and kids were back in Boston with all kinds of sickness killing a large percentage of the population, and knowing full well that they were risking everything they had on a dream. is not by luck that the United States of America is a great country! With the clear vision and the organization that could help obtain this vision many people were willing to do whatever it took for this country. I believe that what we have been doing is similar. Watterson has been the heart of our Catholic community for over 50 years now. We have the opportunity to help ensure that it not only continues to exist, but also continue with a strong heart. This heart is loud, and it is leading our Catholic community to be the best it can be! I had an opportunity to witness this first hand over the past few months. My son, Andrew, will be a freshman this year. We attended the Open House, and I was amazed at what I saw. Students, staff, parent volun- Eagle Review Newsletter - June 2009 people. When we look at the vision for Watterson we see a place where the students, staff and parents have a great Catholic experience that carries over to their involvement with Watterson and their Catholic community for the rest of their lives! To me this Open House was a great confirmation that we are getting there! Greg Bauer will be stepping into the leadership of the Steering Committee. He will do a great job and I look forward to supporting him by helping develop a plan for 2015! Thanks and may God continue to bless Bishop Watterson High School!
