Foundation Update - Anoka Technical College
Fiscal Year 2014 Foundation Update KENT HANSON, Ph.D. VERNE McPHERSON PRESIDENT: ANOKA TECHNICAL COLLEGE PRESIDENT: ANOKA TECHNICAL COLLEGE FOUNDATION CEO: TOLERANCE MASTERS PRECISION MACHINING Welcome to the Anoka Technical College Foundation Update! I can’t say enough about all the good people who have helped us serve thousands of students since the establishment of the Anoka Technical College Foundation in 1987. First and foremost, I want to thank you for your dedication and support of Anoka Technical College. Our students and communities thrive because of your advocacy and encouragement. This Foundation Update reflects the strong support Anoka Tech’s community has shown throughout fiscal year 2014. This is a very exciting time at the college. Anoka Tech, along with its aligned institution, Anoka-Ramsey Community College, has developed a Strategic Plan focused on five goals: Goal 1. Commit to Student Success Goal 2. Promote Academic Excellence Goal 3. Foster a Vibrant, Sustainable Organization Goal 4. Establish a Strong Identity and Reputation for Excellence Goal 5. Strengthen and Extend Meaningful Partnerships The Strategic Plan will help guide us into the future, a future in which higher education becomes increasingly important to a good quality of life, where funding for higher education becomes increasingly scarce, and your support becomes increasingly crucial to the success of public higher education in Minnesota. This year, Anoka Tech has received several large software and equipment donations. These types of contributions are a direct reflection of your support of the college and its foundation. Last year was a banner year for the foundation, awarding $91,250 in scholarships to 113 deserving recipients, while providing more than $8,000 in crisis grant support for 46 students with time-sensitive needs such as food and transportation. Program support consisted of nearly $10,000 in financial assistance to a wide variety of programs on campus, while the foundation also worked diligently with faculty and the business community to secure more than $207,035 in in-kind gifts of equipment and software. Whether through your business, or through personal contributions to the foundation, your generous support has made an incredible difference in the lives of our students, faculty, and subsequently the strength of our academic programs. The upcoming year holds promise for the foundation with a talented and committed board, Cheryl Kish now serving as the Executive Director, and Pete Gravett on board as the Development Director. Pete has more than 20 years of experience in development. He has served as the Executive Director of a non-profit nature center, and a technical education instructor during his 11-year tenure at Groves Academy. Let’s have a great year! Please accept my sincere appreciation for your support and involvement. My door is always open to you and your suggestions to strengthen Anoka Tech’s partnerships within the communities we serve. 2 3 Scholarship Recipients Allina Health Scholarship Kelli Graleske Keith Whalen Crystal Lehn Tonya Mages American Welding Society Scholarship Brandon Schmit Anoka Kiwanis Club Scholarship Jacquelyn Keocher Anoka Lions Club Scholarship Milinda Geroux Anoka Rotary Club Scholarship Santana Orlando Lonni McCauley - Anoka Technical College Employees Scholarship Krista Lazzari Crystral Yaekel Ed Babcock Part-Time Scholarship Susan Makera Shelley Swanson Andrea Anderson Kathleen Boschee Bank of Elk River Scholarship Mitchell Carlson Bank of the West Scholarship Matthew Hesse James Larson 4 Mr. & Mrs. James Barthel Scholarship James Hoppe Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Barthel Scholarship Joshua Norman Caterpillar Paving Products Scholarship Tyler Aherns Zachary Brown Spencer Cadwell Andrew Larsen Suzanne Lindberg Charles Parrish Jesse Smith Dennis Thiel Rachel Volkmuth Andrew Wieland Andrew Zeece Connexus Energy Scholarship Lindsay Barker Anthony Tamngwa Coon Rapids Lions Club Scholarship Abbey Driscoll Lauren Erie Sally Happe Hermal Page Coon Rapids Rotary Club Scholarship Mary Heiss Cretex Companies Scholarship Stasia Tschida Herman & Adeline Danner Scholarship Matthew Lewno Suzanne Lindberg Depo International Scholarship William Boes Tammy Mathwig Distinguished Scholars (Andersen Foundation) Scholarship Erin Keran LoriAnn Rouleau Tammi Lentz Federal Premium Scholarship Rebecca Haensel Melissa Lundgren Rachel Smith Valerie Arnold Federated Insurance Scholarship Jill Brown Fridley American Legion Post 303 Scholarship Jessica Marlow Getting Started Scholars Scholarship Anthony Gunter Nicholas Heck Hunter Procai Andrea Schold Great River Energy Scholarship Laura Rutherford Chelsea Mevissen Bonnie Gruber Memorial Scholarship Kevin Minkkinen Susan Hanson Memorial Scholarship Joel Chambers Paradigm Reporting Scholarship Shambrie Kiene Walter Rasmussen Foundaton Scholarship Shylynn Camp Invest In A Lasting Legacy Scholarship Dawnelle Hesse Sharon Warren Part-Time Scholarship Terrianne Seehafer Riverside Manufacturing Scholarship Joshua Hultberg Paul O’Black Tom Kingston Scholarship Jeremy Nelson Kopp Presidential Scholar Scholarship Jennifer Crill Philip Kirby Dawn Larson Shawn Murray Bettina Remme Kyle Sherer Katerina Yevdokimova Alexander Xiong Mary T., Inc. I received the Pentair Scholarship through the Anoka Technical College Foundation. It was an honor to receive the support, and the process inspired me to complete my program to the best of my abilities. The money paid for my classes and my books. I am so thankful to have this school and this support! 6 Stephanie Saggerson Accounting and Information Technology Management programs As a recipient of the Ramsey Lions Club Scholarship, I was able to pay for my tuition and textbooks for fall semester. This relieved a large financial burden, and enabled me to become more involved in Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society that develops scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship among its members and communities. I am honored to be recognized by a service group with the sole interest of improving every aspect of the community I live in. Thank you to the Ramsey Lions Club and the Anoka Technical College Foundation for sponsoring my education, investing in my future and allowing me enriching life experiences! 7 Foundation Highlights Tuition per credit: $166.99 Foundation Age: 27 years old Scholarships Awarded: 113 Largest Programs Scholarship Amount Awarded: $91,250 Crisis Grant Awarded: 46 Crisis Grant Amount Awarded: $8,162 Awarded to Five Academic Programs for Equipment: $9,397 Unique Programs Health Technology Information Technology Management Practical Nursing Medical Assistant Medical Coding Specialist Automotive Technician CNC Manufacturing Technology Broadcast Captioning Judicial Reporting Occupational Therapy Assistant Golf Course Grounds Management Health Information Technology Multimedia and Gaming Information Technology College Quick Facts In-Kind Equipment/Supplies Donations to Academic Programs: 12 In-kind Donation Amount: $207,035 Foundation Financials College Financials Fiscal Year 2013-2014 Donations $152,453 52+9+381H 61+3+2772H Fiscal Year 2013-2014 Investments $2,771 Rent, Sales and Other $1,497,242 1% 38% Where the Money Comes From $400,504 Fundraising $38,245 Operations $23,821 7% Scholarships $91,250 27% $9,397 8 Tuition and Fees In-kind $207,035 Other Grants $8,947 $155,303 Student Services $1,604,021 Physical Plant Operations $2,037,599 17% Where the Money Comes From 41% 4% 32% 7% Where the Money Goes 5% $207,035 Instruction $9,019,496 $993,368 State Appropriations $7,586,028 Scholarships/Financial Aid $5,013,158 21% 38% In-kind State Grants 1% 13% $23,489,145 61% $3,931,427 $23,675,230 8% Where the Money Goes 2.5% $9,667,165 2.5% $340,450 Equipment 52% 10% 17+4+32416B 21+13+753881B 6% Federal Grants 7% Institutional Support $2,998,923 Academic Support $1,542,490 Auxiliary Enterprise $1,118,155 9 Philanthropists $100,000 & Above Allina Health Systems Caterpillar Global Paving Products Connexus Energy Elk River Machine Company** Graco, Inc.** Kopp Investment Advisors Ramsey Lions Club Benefactors $50,000-$99,999 Amada America, Inc. ** Elmer L. & Eleanor J. The gift, with a retail value of $559,000, will allow every Machine Technology student to train with GibbsCAM educational CNC programming software, a widely used industry software. This donation will directly impact the manufacturing skills gap identified by the Minnesota Department of Education (DEED). According to DEED, manufacturing accounts for 13 percent of Minnesota’s private sector jobs and almost 15 percent of the private sector’s output. Further, the same 2011 DEED survey indicated that businesses need employees with more training in computer skills, and that technical schools, such as Anoka Technical College, provided the most effective education and training. Sherry Butcher Wickstrom, Anoka Technical College’s Dean of Academic Affairs, said: “Our graduates in the machine trades already are in demand. This generous gift will ensure that our machine technology students have additional skills, knowledge and practical experience that will leave them even better prepared for a successful future.” Sally Anderson, President Excel Accounting & Consulting, LLC David Harn, Factory Manager Caterpillar Global Paving Products Josh Headlee, CEO Accelerated Innovations Sharon Jones, Vice President Product Development & Quality Federal Premium Duane Lowe, Director of Operations Federal Cartridge Company Rich Lord, spokesman for Midwest CAM Solutions and Gibbs and Associates (third from left) presents (from left) Anoka Technical College and Anoka-Ramsey Community College Foundation Executive Director Cheryl Kish, Anoka Technical College and Anoka-Ramsey Community College President Kent Hanson and Anoka Technical College Foundation Vice President Verne McPherson with a donation of GibbsCAM educational CNC programming software. Gifts of Appreciated Securities, Stocks and Bonds Securities, stocks and bonds provide considerable tax advantages when transferred to the Anoka Technical College Foundation before they are sold. If you have held your securities for more than one year, you may find that your gift will provide a twofold tax benefit, creating an income tax deduction as well as helping avoid the capital gains tax that would have been due on their sale. If you wish to transfer stocks from a broker’s account, the Anoka Technical College Foundation has an account with an area brokerage firm. Have your broker call the Anoka Technical College Foundation for more information. You also may make a gift of mutual funds, nonmarketable stock, or closely held stock. Contact the Anoka Technical College Foundation for information about giving these types of securities. Gifts of Equipment and Materials Anoka Technical College encourages and appreciates in-kind donations of equipment and materials if they can be used to benefit college programs and services. In some cases, an equipment or material donation may enable you to make a significant gift with outstanding tax benefits. Gift Pledges Anoka Technical College welcomes gifts through a personal pledge—a formal statement of intention to make a gift to the college. 14 With a pledge, you may complete your gift by making regular payments over time, allowing you to give more generously than you originally may have considered. In addition, each payment on your pledge is eligible for an income-tax charitable deduction. Matching-Gift Programs An easy way to double or even triple your donation to Anoka Technical College is to find out if your company has a matching-gift program. Such programs typically match all or a percentage of employee contributions to charitable organizations, making the employer a partner in employees’ personal philanthropy. Simply obtain a matching-gift form from your employer’s personnel office, complete it and provide it to the Anoka Technical College Foundation with your contribution. Yes I’d like to make a gift to the Anoka Technical College Foundation Annual Fund Campaign Outright Gifts When you make an outright gift to the Anoka Technical College Foundation, your contribution may be put to work immediately—either providing funding for current programs or creating a reliable source of future income by expanding the college’s endowment. An outright gift may be comprised of almost any asset of value. Planned Gifts To learn about deferred or planned gifts, including leaving a gift to the college in your will or naming the college as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, please contact the Anoka Technical College Foundation. Many planned gifts have tax benefits to the donor. The foundation will work with you and your financial advisor to ensure your financial goals and gifts are recorded as you wish. The Anoka Technical College Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
