TO FIN CLIP 10,000 TROUT FOR THE UPPER MERCED RIVER. THE SNOW PACK SHOULD KEEP THE WATER COOL ENOUGH FOR THEM TO SURVIVE THE SUMMER MONTHS. SEE YOU THE 23RD. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY (DATE: TBD - Club will choose dates as a Group at this Next Meeting) From: Rob Grasso Park Aquatic Ecologist Yosemite National Park Hi All, As some of you may know, the first recorded fish plant in Yosemite was by an early homesteader named Horace Kibbie, who planted rainbow trout in Lake Eleanor in 1877. We have long assumed that these fish might be of native Tuolumne River origin. Well, now might have a chance to find out. We are collaborating with researchers (John Wooster & Devon Pearse) from NOAA/NMFS to collect fin clips from Lake Eleanor rainbows to be used in genetic analyses. I'd like to see if we could get some volunteers to help with the effort. We are looking at the second half of June to do a one or two day trip out to Eleanor and collect fin clips. Please respond to this post if interested and weekend (June 17-19 or June 24-26) you would prefer and we'll pick the weekend with the most available. We will likely have both kayak and shore anglers (let me know your preference) and we will provide you with all the materials and training you would need onsite. We may also electorfish Frog Creek, but that may depend on the number of anglers that sign up, feel free to spread the work but make sure to cc me so I can get an accurate count. Best. Rob 2 President’s Message (Continued) Also a reminder that club member Cindy Lashbrook is hosting her annual pick and gather river fair festival on Saturday, June 4th. The MFFC will be on hand to provide a casting clinic and information booth for interested attendees, signups will be available at the meeting. Not too long ago I went fishing by myself on the Merced River for a few hours, upon returning to my vehicle I discovered that I had a flat tire and a yellow CHP tow notice plastered across my windshield. To make matters worse, the sun was rapidly setting on my misfortune. Fortunately I was able to patch up my tire and be on my way in no time. I know, I know; Only in America, however this predicament does provide us with reaffirmation that preparation is fundamental for success. We can’t always rely on somebody being there to bail us out, should we find ourselves in an adverse situation. I believe that one should be prepared on any trip with the four F’s of survival: fire, food, first aid and filtration for water. Having the ability to access any or all of these crucial necessities are paramount to surviving should the situation arise. Remember to ration water and food when out in the field and keep your cell phone on if traveling alone, emergency first responders will have an easier time finding you if you have the phone on and in your possession instead of locked up back in the car. We must never forget how spontaneous Mother Nature can truly be, therefore being prepared for anything and having a plan is a good recipe for success. I always prepare for the worst, hope for the best and let the Almighty Father take care of the rest, I shall leave you with the words of John Wooden to close: “Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail” “Tightlines and safe passage” -MB- Remember to Renew Your Club Membership for 2016! 3 The Tight Line Newsletter The Tight Line is the Official Newsletter of the Merced Fly Fishing Club.
