The ship was transporting Italian and German civilian internees and German POWs to Canada when she was torpedoed by a U-boat. Bodies from the ship were to be discovered at dozens of points all the way from Mayo to the Outer Hebrides, where remote coastal communities buried the men. Rathlin is one of those locations. Our event is growing more and more as people become aware and spread the word. There is no pressure to come along or to bring anything except a smile but people have an inbuilt desire to meet new people and share what they can. ..................................................................................................................................................................................... brings communities together but can help cement those bonds year on year. Ours serves to remind us how dependant on our neighbours we really are throughout the year and gives everyone a chance to repay a kindness to those we know or make new friends for the future. minute and strong and vibrant the next, Dublin Folk singersongwriter Aoife Scott has become a force to be reckoned with on the Irish folk and traditional scene. With an impeccable pedigree as a member of the legendary Black Family, which includes her mother, Frances, and her aunt, Mary, Aoife is steadily rising to the top of the traditional and folk music scene, while garnering acclaim and recognition both here and abroad as she hones her craft. With family roots deep in Rathlin, Aoife has been surrounded by and immersed in music from an early age, listening to her grandparents, mother, aunt and uncles making music around the fire. Aoife moved to the west coast of Ireland several years ago and her passion for the native Irish language spoken there is reflected in her choice of songs. A good friend of the Maritime Festival we are delighted to welcome Aoife back to bring this year’s events to a close. Here’s to next year!
