August HAA Members Show
‘Angel Rutherford’
Featured Artist & Chairperson
for the month of August
Open Reception
August 5th, 3:00-5:00 P.M.
—- at the Sierra Vista Mall Gallery —-
“Feed Me” by Angel Rutherford
I am fairly new at the HAA, I think it was about 7 years ago that I entered some of my photography
into the open judged show of the HAA, and won second, third prize and an honorable mention. I guess
that got me hooked, I became a member and immediately got involved in taking classes in different media
that were being offered. This was a very tuff time for me as my beloved husband Mickey, my soul mate
became very ill and shortly after passed away. The fellowship and encouragement I received from my fellow artists helped me a lot over these trying times. Now, I consider the HAA my extended family, we are
there for each other and despite of my involvement in many things in this wonderful community, I can
hardly wait for Thursday and Friday, my days in the HAA Studio in Hereford, to arrive, days I spend with
my friends the other artists creating our dreams. We have lunch together and we look at each others
works and get good advise, praise and sometimes critic. All this makes things happen for me, I would
never find the time to paint at home, there are too many distractions. My thanks go out also to all of these
experienced artists who really made it happen that this show came together. To name a few, Liz Horning
who inspires me with her amazing floral paintings, Edie Manion who creates the most wonderful pastels,
Trilby Arnold who taught me scratch board engraving ad is always so encouraging, Claudia Apperson and
Barry Midgorden and Joan Wakefield that gave me drawing lessons and taught me to see, Harlan White
and Mary Okert that made me see different ways, Jack Miller and Charles Marlowe that gave me lessons in
oil, Sherry Harig who introduced me to acrylic, Geoff McLeod and Pat Dunbar and Carole Reilley and Angus Bowie Wilson that introduced me to watercolor. All these wonderful people shared with me their
knowledge and open my heart to art and enriched my life.
This show will be of my version of Watercolor, Oils, Acrylics, and Scratch-board engraving.

Happy August to you all,
With no demonstrations or
members' meeting this month,
August should be be pretty quiet,
with one exception. Our regular "dine
with the artists" get together has
been moved in both time and place from the studio on Astro St. to the
home of Les and Mary Stafford on
Stafford Lane, off Ramsey Canyon
Rd., and it will be on August 11. But
this one will not be a potluck. The
Staffords are, most generously,
supplying all the food, so it is very
important, if you plan on attending,
that you RSVP no later than
August 8. Call 803-6510.
Art in the Park is coming up on us
really, really fast. There still are
spaces available for more vendors,
but the longer you wait, the less
choice you will have in your location.
Bill Willis is looking for volunteers to
work in shifts monitoring the RV
parking lot, and of course, Edie will
be needing volunteers in the Info
Booth. We also will need a crew to
do some polling of the vendors.
Art in the Park is the one event that
keeps the HAA solvent. Without it we
could not pay for most of the things
we do, so at the risk of sounding like
a broken record or, even worse, a
PBS pledge drive, we're asking for
your donation, not of money, but of
time. Just a few hours, once a year.
That's all we ask. Now back to our
regular programming.
Keep on creating.

Curators’ Message from the Mall Gallery
Sue Olivo
Just a few words this month about titles and the “comment book.”
Elizabeth has been wonderful getting all our title cards ready for your artwork
when it comes into the Gallery on “trade day.” Unfortunately, there are several
people who routinely miss the Monday deadline and that leaves Elizabeth working twice as long at something that should be accomplished in one sitting. The
printer at the Gallery doesnʼt work as well as her computer and printer. So, if
she tries to use the one we have it doesnʼt work and she has to go home to
print the titles and then come back another day or two. Also, the trade day is
too busy for her to do it that day; therefore, we will not be able to accept any
artwork, if the titles havenʼt been sent to Elizabeth on Monday or before.
Regarding the “comment book” at the front desk, we do appreciate your comments, but we do not want anything ugly written about anyoneʼs work. Letʼs
respect each other and our creativeness. If something is really bothering you,
please call one of the curators so we can solve your problem.
Angel Rutherford is the
“Featured Artist” this month. Be sure to attend the reception August the 5th. Lorna Zerba provides a fantastic feast you wonʼt want to miss. Thanks Lorna for all
your hard work!
Trade day is August 29th.
See you then
Photos courtesy Chasity Seibert
If adding or changing artwork the last
Wednesday of the month (August 29th)
please send titles, medium and price to
Elizabeth Line
[email protected]
803.0195
Send by e-mail or U.S. mail two days prior to
deadline. She will have your title cards ready
for reviewing and for attaching to artwork
before hanging.

Angel Rutherford is the featured artist for August
at the Huachuca Art Gallery at the
Mall at Sierra Vista
Angel was born in Germany to a Dynasty of Dancers and Actors
and grew up behind the stages of the largest German speaking
Theaters and Television sets. Her parents had homes in Berlin,
Hamburg and Zurich; she went to schools in Berlin, Recklinghausen, home of the largest Theater Festival in Germany, and in
Zurich, Ascona and Neuchatel, Switzerland, she got her education
in four languages. She studied Theater for 4 semesters in a famous acting school in Berlin.
Angel got an interest in photography at the age of 16, that’s when
“Datura at Carr Canyon”
she bought her first camera, a Pentax, and is mostly self taught.
Her Family used to travel a lot and Angel saw the world at a young age, her camera always ready, she also
lived in England, France, and the Canary Islands, Spain.
Her photographs, one taken in Taiwan “The Chinese Gardener” and “Inquisitive Minds” (a photo of her dog
at her pond), are found in 2 individual Coffee Table Books issued by the International Library of
Photography.
Angel came to America almost 30 years ago and lived several years in Fairbanks, Alaska, where her husband Mickey worked for NASA. She absolutely loved the Alaskan Wilderness, for her it was a photographer’s heaven. Here she also started to garden and to enjoy taking images of wildflowers and wildlife. In
1996 the Rutherford’s moved to Sierra Vista. In 97 Angel became a Cochise County Master Gardener and a
member of the SV Area Gardeners Club. Her qualification is in Desert- and Water Gardening. She also has
a monthly column in the “Herald” and has taught “Pond building and maintenance” classes at Cochise
College.
I am a board member of the Huachuca Art Association and a member
of the Tombstone Art Association. I am on the board of the Friends of
the Huachuca Mountains and AARP local chapter 3123, a Cochise
