The design of the bridge with draw features and a stronger foundation caused
it to cost more than others at the time, but it still only cost about $54,000.
Everyone felt it was money well spent.
Written By: Shirley Spearow
The date was Nov. 6, 1912. The scene was very different
from the present entrance to Brazoria. The big bridge
over the Brazos River connecting Bailey’s Prairie to the
business section of Brazoria, (now known as Old Town),
was decorated with lots of bunting, and the American
flag proudly waved above it all. Hundreds of people from
all over the State, gathered on the bridge to witness its
christening. A band played and many decorated tables
were piled high with food and set for the
huge barbecue Brazoria provided for all.
The old wooden ferry which had carried
people and wagons back and forth for so
long was anchored nearby. No longer did we
have to help pole and tug the vessel across the
turbulent water. It would soon be forgotten,
but never missed.
Time rolled on and the town grew and changed. The river slowly washed
away at its west bank. Gulf storms and river floods took their tole on the
businesses as well, and many moved to New Town, by the railroad. Then on
Saturday, June 21, 1935 about midnight, the pilings gave way and the 100 foot
span on the Brazoria side fell in the water.
The Brazoria people pleaded with commissioners’
court for a new bridge. Finally they agreed, but they
would have to pass a bond election to pay for it. Only
land owners could vote on property tax issues. To
ensure the passage of the bond issue, a barbecue was
held under the pecan trees by the election booths. The
bond carried 4 to 1. Work Prgress Administration
(WPA) funds were applied for. By the time the
commissioners learned that a requirement for WPA
money was that the bridge had to be on a farm to
market road, core samples had already been taken.
The decision was made to build the new bridge by the railroad bridge, and
connecting it to the street into the new business section of town.
Texas highway officials had just heard about the new farm to market road
system connecting major highways for rapid shipment of produce and other
farm goods. None had been designated as such, yet.
Lead Commissioner C.W. Massey and Precinct 4 Commissioner W.H.
Brigance, made many trips to Austin to convince State highway officials of
the importance of the bridge in this historic area. The state officials finally
agreed and in 1938, Brazoria-Bailey’s Prairie road became the first farm to
market road in the state of Texas. It connects highways 35 and 36.
The bridge was built using local labor, and both WPA, and bond money.
The steel and concrete structure
was completed on November 27,
1939, before the embankments
and road were built.
Thus people throughout the county
called it the bridge to nowhere.

Faith is Alive in Brazoria
There are approximately forty Churches in Brazoria that represent the
faith of the citizens of Brazoria. There are congregations that represent
a variety of denominations. Each Church has a unique ministry to offer
to the citizens of Brazoria that are members, to visitors or even to those
that never enter their doors.
Brazoria First Assembly
Brazoria First Assembly is located at 601 S. Market St. and is Pastored by
Dale Frankum. Sunday worship services are held at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
in the Church Sanctuary. Your children can be a part of Babiez-N-Bloom or
Kidz K-Nect on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. These ministries are designed
to nurture and develop the whole person. They will have fun, learn to
have healthy relationships and discover their God given uniqueness. On
Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. your youth will encounter a dynamic youth ministry.
It is designed to develop healthy young adults prepared to contribute to our
world. We offer Kidz-Zone on Wednesday that focuses upon “Respect.” For
all adults who want to be challenged, grow and contribute to our world we
have Bible Study in the Church Sanctuary.
Brazoria First Assembly is actively involved in our community. Brazoria First
Assembly hosts annual events which include the Easter Egg Hunt, Celebrate
America, School Supply Drive and Winter Wonderland. For more information
please contact the church office @ 979.798.7585 or [email protected].
