PROUDLY ANNOUNCING!! PALS member wins Best in Show at the PoconoArts Members Exhibition for her sculpture “I’ll Stand By You” The sculpture will be on display for the months of June & July at the Eastern Monroe Public Library Gallery - 1002 North 9th Street Stroudsburg, PA 18360. New Exhibit in the Gallery at Pocono Comm. Theater and Cultural Center through June 28th "Untraveled" featuring the art of Susan and Stephen Washington Susan says her new work has evolved from her experiences with abstract collage and explores opportunities for creating visual flow across space. This flow is eluded to through torn dress patterns, unraveled threads, acrylic and graphite. She hopes to encourage the viewer to explore the untraveled territory as if through a passage of time, a land or complex visual thought processes. Some images are encapsulated in epoxy which fuses the layers and creates an event that is unknown until the epoxy is poured. Some have been left glass-like with intentional imperfections to show the artistic involvement. Others have been wet sanded and a few pieces left with a mix between gloss and matte varnish for dimensional effect. These paintings are meant to be explored in all dimensions. She has had her own personal journey with each of these pieces. However, she leaves it up to the viewer as to what the journey means to the viewer. Stephen's new work is about the creation, distribution and viewing of digital data in the 21st century. These pieces begin as digital photographs of power and telecom hardware on utility poles in his neighborhood. Then he imports these photographs into editing software and duplicates them into multiple layers which are then manipulated to create painterly passages of pixels. Each layer is then added and subtracted from each other as both negative and positive images until the desired state of abstraction is achieved. The image is then sent to a printer using the local telecom infrastructure captured in the original photograph. He then mounts the pigment print and hand coats it with a thick layer of clear epoxy to emulate the glass screens on cameras, tablets, smartphones and monitors/television screens through which we view the majority of the visual images we are presented with each day and through which these images are initiated, evolved and are presented online. The portrait of a large, rural southern family’s attempt to grapple with their mother’s desperate decision to make her newborn son into the daughter she will never have When the seventh child of the Peace family, named Perfect, turns eight, her mother Emma Jean tells her bewildered daughter, “You was born a boy. I made you a girl. But that ain’t what you was supposed to be. So, from now on, you gon’ be a boy. It’ll be a little strange at first, but you’ll get used to it, and this’ll be over after while.” From this point forward, his life becomes a bizarre kaleidoscope of events. Meanwhile, the Peace family is forced to question everything they thought they knew about gender, sexuality, unconditional love, and fulfillment. Wednesday, June 4, 2014, 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Ballroom, William Way Community Center, 1315 Spruce Street in Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA - On May 20, 2014, in the case Whitewood v. Wolf, Federal District Judge John E. Jones III struck down the Pennsylvania law that precluded same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania and refused recognition of same-sex marriages from other states or countries. But what does this all mean to members of the LGBT community? Find out at this meeting. A panel of distinguished attorneys and law professors will be on hand to provide a general overview of: the decision and legal rights and responsibilities that come with it; adoption and parenting; divorce; recognition of out-of-state marriages and civil unions; resources for low-income couples; and how Pennsylvania’s anti-discrimination laws might (or might not!) protect you from discrimination based on your marital status. Bring your questions! Co-sponsored by: the ACLU of Pennsylvania, Mazzoni Center, the Philadelphia Bar Association LGBT Rights Committee, and the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations http://www.aclupa.org/news/2014/05/29/town-hall-marriage-equality-pennsylvania-what-does-it-really Note from the Geek: Paradox - that will be the theme this week. Presented with the Fermi paradox has set your Geek to wondering about the paradox phenomenon in general. We know "x" but, what about the contradictory "y?" They can't both be true at the same time and yet they are -- given the proper set of circumstances. So then, does merely believing something is true make it true? Or, does it become "true enough for me"? Is myopic observation and followed by a filtered acceptance of facts actually a survival skill? If we know how it's done, is it still magic? Possibly, the road less traveled should be the one between awe and cynicism. 2015 / ISSUE 6 PAGE 7
