Dear Readers
I was thrilled to be invited to London by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust [SSAT] this term. The event
took place at BAFTA headquarters on Piccadilly and was organised to celebrate the top ‘most improved’ schools
nationally. Aylesford figured in the top 350 schools from a total of 4000, for progress in GCSE outcomes at 5A*C. It is quite ironic after writing to you a short time ago outlining my view that education should be more about
process than relative whole school outcomes.
However, we must accept the

GIFTED AND TALENTED INITIATIVES
We would like to thank all our students who are gifted and talented in some way or other! That is what this
Newsletter demonstrates on a regular basis, there are some more examples of how we try to draw these talents
out.
National Maths Challenge
Gifted Mathematicians from Year 10 were recently entered into the Intermediate UK Maths Challenge in
February. This competition attracts over 100,000 students nationally. The results have just been released and
we were very pleased with the performance of our budding Mathematicians. The certificate for best in school and
a gold certificate went to Peter Davies. Recipients of silver
certificates were: Eleanor Lees, Andrew Partridge and Liam
Rutter. Year 8 will be entering the Junior Level UK Challenge in
May.
Visit to Think Tank
Four students from Year 7 were nominated by their Science
teachers to attend an event at the Think Tank in Birmingham on
Saturday 1st March. Alex Cossey 7KDD, Will Baldwin 7WLF,
Amber Ridgway 7WLF and Katie Morris 7MCD took part in a
Tomorrow’s Achiever Master Class ‘Genes in a Bottle.’ All children
had a fantastic time and brought home many souvenirs including
their own DNA set made into a necklace.
Year 9 Visit to Coventry University

University for a University Experience day. This visit forms part of
the Aim Higher programme that the school coordinates, raising
aspirations for students. Students took part in many activities including a product design workshop where they got
to make masks and were also taken on a tour of the campus. Everyone enjoyed the day, which is evident from
their comments; “I learnt that there are a lot of different people at University “- Helena. “I enjoyed mixing with

Toyota Technical Challenge
A group of seven students entered the National Toyota Challenge. This is the
view of one of these students: “The event our systems and control class at
Aylesford School, Warwick took part in is known as the ‘Toyota Technology
Challenge.’ In the event we built a PIC (Programmable Interface Chip)
miniature buggy. This involved us soldering on components to a circuit board
that was provided, we designed and built the buggy around this and finally programmed it. The Aylesford team has already won through the first round and
will now take part in the regional finals in Derby on the 28th April where it will
have to detect obstacles and manoeuvre around them. “ Jack Morris, Year 10

ENTERPRISE DAY AND INTERNATIONAL DAY
Year 10 Enterprise Day
Year 10 had a very successful Enterprise Day on 6th March. The students were involved in a range of activities
designed to enhance their understanding of the skills required in the workplace.
The highlight of the day proved to be an enterprise competition entitled ‘Rollercoaster.’ This activity involved
students constructing a rollercoaster out of paper, which required the skills of creativity, leadership and teamwork.
The competitive spirit was very visible as teams were judged on how slow a marble ran through each
rollercoaster.
Students were positive about the day, here are a few of the things they said:
“I have enjoyed working with people that I haven’t worked with
before. I particularly enjoyed designing the rollercoaster” – Dan
“I have learnt how to work in a team and overcome problems” –
Vicki
“I have learnt about communication which will help me when I go
for interviews and write CV’s” – Liam
“I have learnt that life can be hard and you need to be prepared”

International Day
A favourite event in the Year 8 school calendar is International Day. This year, International Day took place on
Tuesday 11th March. All students in Year 8 abandoned their normal timetable to take part in a range of special
workshops led by invited visitors to the school.
The workshop presenters came to share their knowledge, experiences and culture with Aylesford students.
Activities included Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, the oriental martial art of Tai Chi, line dancing from
the USA, traditional tribal drumming from Africa, a special presentation about the culture and food of
Sierra Leone and costumes and traditional sitar music from India.
As you can see from the pictures below there was a strong emphasis on active involvement from all the
students! Look out for more photographs in the local press and on our school website. The event was an outstanding success! Many thanks to all the students and staff who made the event so enjoyable. Mr M Payne

Drama
Local playwright talks to students about her work
Sixth Form Drama and Theatre Studies students had the rare
opportunity to interview local playwright, actor and film director,
Debbie Isitt, when she visited the school on Monday 3rd March.
Debbie Isitt, who lives in Coventry, is perhaps most famous for
directing and writing the hugely successful British film Confetti
which hit cinemas a couple of years ago.
The Year 12 students have been studying one of her plays,
‘Matilda Liar,’ in class as part of their course and a group of
Year 13 students have also chosen to perform this piece for
their practical exam in a couple of weeks time. The students all
had the opportunity to improve their coursework grades by
asking Debbie a range of questions about her work. The Year
13 students also had the privilege of gaining feedback from the
writer herself as they asked if they could present part of their
interpretation of her work to her in person. Debbie was only too pleased to watch the presentation and even took
the time to not only compliment the students on their work but to suggest how they could improve it further!
We are always striving to inspire our students and I was extremely grateful to Debbie for finding the time to come
in and meet us.
Mr J Prince
A six-legged nightmare!
Year 12 and 13 Drama and Theatre Studies students
visited the Birmingham REP theatre on Tuesday 26th
February to see a production ‘Metamorphosis’ by Lyric
Hammersmith theatre company. The play is adapted
from a story by Franz Kafka about a man who wakes up
one morning to discover he has turned into an insect.
His family are at first repulsed by him and lock him in his
room pretending he is not there. Repulsion turns to
resentment when they try to rent out a spare room only to
fail when the visitor discovers the family’s dark secret.
Darkly comic and profoundly moving, this hugely
acclaimed and imaginative production combined jawdropping aerial action, a gravity-defying split level set
and a mesmerising score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.
A ‘Splendid’ production
Year 13 Drama and Theatre Studies students visited
Bablake School on Wednesday 27th February to
experience a Brecht performance and workshop with
Splendid Productions theatre company. The event was
specifically designed to prepare the students for one of
their exams in the summer in which they have to analyse
a Brechtian production which they have seen. The students mixed extremely well with their Bablake colleagues
to produce some interesting work during a one and half
hour intensive and specialist workshop. The production
itself was superb and will serve as perfect preparation for
the summer.
We were extremely grateful to our colleagues at Bablake
who allowed us to attend for free, as it would have cost
their school a significant amount to hire the company in.
Thanks also go to Miss Greaves for organising the
opportunity.

DEPARTMENT NEWS
Food Technology
Licence to Cook
This is a heading you may have seen in the news recently from the Department
of Children, Schools and Families. It is a national initiative led by the British
Nutrition Foundation, Design and Technology Association and Specialist
Schools and Academies Trust.
The scheme refers to an entitlement for every young person to learn basic
cooking skills and nutritional theory by the time they are 16. The Key Stage 3
curriculum (Years 7,8 and 9) will work round four key competences, namely, diet
and nutrition, food safety and hygiene, basic cooking skills and consumer
awareness.
This initiative is designed to help tackle the problem of childhood obesity by
equipping students with food and nutrition knowledge and skills to make informed
choices. A key focus is an emphasis on getting back to basics for example
using simple quality foods, simple preparation techniques, foods in season and
locally sourced where possible.
At Aylesford our Food Technology programmes already cover most of these requirements, although consumer
awareness and budgeting will need to be incorporated in more detail. We also have a whole school approach to
food and nutrition and have been awarded Healthy School status which demonstrates the school’s commitment to
this subject. For more information visit www.healthyschools.gov.uk and www.schoolsnetwork.org.uk

Student Success
Two students from the school were recently entered for
the Midlands Counties under 17 athletics championships
at the NIA. Jess Lowe competed in the 200m relay and
60m hurdles and Josh Guest in the high jump. They
both did very well and Josh gained a silver medal for his
performance in the high jump.
A week after the event Josh improved his performance
further, winning the open event and reaching sixth place
in the UK rankings.
Jess summed up
what it meant to be
given the opportunity
to compete in the
county championships. She said “It
was a great experience to be selected
knowing that
England’s athletes
train and perform at
this venue.”
RE
Year 10 recently went on a trip to the Holocaust
Museum in Nottingham. Not only was this an educational and interesting trip but also a once in a lifetime experience. The students had the opportunity
to listen to two survivors of the Holocaust. They
delved in to their traumatic and emotional experiences and really put the devastation of the Nazis
into perspective.
We also had the chance to participate in memorials
and show our respects for those lost in the horrific
events of World War II. At the end of the day we
had a chance to discuss all the current genocides
that have occurred quite recently in foreign countries
and how we can never let history repeat itself. I
would definitely recommend anyone and everyone
to go on this trip. Vicky Heritage and Alice Rosser
Fencing
Students at Aylesford have recently been given the
opportunity to participate in a new activity at lunchtime
and afterschool, fencing!
Students from Year 7 up the Sixth Form have been
receiving free tuition and lessons from a qualified coach
every week and many have shown real talent with a
sabre.
Any student interested in experiencing fencing, please
see Mr Brannan for details.

Music
County Chamber Music Festival Concert
This took place on Thursday 6th March, in our main Hall
and am pleased to report that 8 groups from Aylesford
School took part. It was an enjoyable evening of music
making and we are grateful for the input from County
Music Service for the event. Students from Year 7
through to Year 13 performed; they did a great job. Of
these groups, Sixth Form band ‘Vehicle’ were also
invited to play in the county-wide Chamber Music Plus
Concert in Bedworth Civic Hall on Tuesday 11th March at
7.30pm. Well done to everyone who took part; it was a
very long day for us all but great to show off the many
and varied musical talents here at Aylesford School. I’m
very proud of how hard so many of our students have
worked this year to demonstrate how successful our new
specialist Music status is.

Primary School Performances
Children from Westgate, Barford and Newburgh Primary
schools will be taking part in a performance of Nick Burt’s
‘Androcles and the Lion’ at Aylesford School on Friday
14th March at 4.30pm.
Encore!
After the Easter holiday, we are starting a new
activity on a Tuesday after school. We are inviting
children from Aylesford School and all of the
Primary schools in our extended schools cluster, to
take part in a new singing club, called ‘Encore!’
which aims to sing in a variety of languages and
provide an opportunity for students to have fun
whilst building both their language and music skills.
Singing is really good for you! It builds stamina and
improves breathing, and it helps build confidence in
performing and presentation skills. The club will
take place in the main Hall at Aylesford School,
beginning at 3.45pm and ending at 4.45pm. It’s
free to join, so why not come along?
Wigmore Hall Jazz
On Friday 22nd February, we were very fortunate to
welcome to Aylesford School a fantastic Jazz trio,
comprising piano, double bass and drums to work
with some of our students. They are linked to the
education department of the Wigmore Hall in
London and this was the first time they had worked
outside the capital on such a venture. They were
based in Warwickshire for a week and spent their
final day with us – and what a great day it was.
Our students learned a great deal about the Jazz
genre and the performance relationship between all
three of them and it was amazing to see their
improvisation skills at first hand. They worked with
three groups in the morning, consisting of the
current music exam groups in Years 10, 11, 12 and
13 and also with current Year 9 students who have
opted for the music courses next year. The final
session in the afternoon saw all groups come together for one big performance. Special mention
must go to Sam Swallow and Martin Clarke for
their valuable contributions. The day is summed up
by James Thomas (Year 13) who says: “Not only
did we have the opportunity to watch some fantastic
musicians, but we were also able to play with them
and learn from them in terms of how to connect with
one another.” Well done to all those who took part!
They will take part in workshop sessions with me, Simon
Phillips and Nick Burt, the composer of ‘Androcles.’
Children will also be sharing some of the class project
work they have been doing with me, and using the
instruments provided by our successful bid to the
National Lottery fund. This is our first big Primary school
music performance at Aylesford School and we hope it
will be the first of many!

Student Learning Council Training Day
Members of the SLC were invited to attend a one day training event on Monday 10th March. The objective of the
day was to help the Council members to run a highly effective Council.
The training took part in Silas Marner and was delivered by Elaine Moore from the Warwickshire Education
Business Partnership.
Throughout the day, students defined the role of a School Councillor, discussed what skills and qualities were
needed to be an effective Councillor and took part in team building exercises.
All students found the day to be very rewarding and felt they had gained a lot from the experience.

Sixth Form Stars
Year 13 Maths students have now completed four out of the six modules for their ‘A’ level course.
Kevin Ray, Ian Hayes, Becky Birdsall, Jenny Wong and Louise Sutton are all working towards top ‘A’ grades
and deserve recognition for their diligence and application. Keep it up!
Speed Debate Result
13STT = 73
12PRR = 76
The two teams contested a fiercely fought debate with no quarter neither sought nor given. Alice Chamberlain
and Laurence Pavier proposed the motion:'This House believes animal testing to be a necessary evil in pursuit
of medical advances.’ In response Lucy Smith and Samera Hussain opposed the motion with all four
students well prepared for the cut and thrust of speed debating. Although, narrowly edged out by their younger
counterparts, 13STT did have the debater of the match in Alice Chamberlain.

Our two Young Enterprise companies exWhy and New Horizons traded throughout a busy Saturday 8th March
at the heart of Leamington’s shopping zone. Having set up on Friday evening, both teams were ready for the off
first thing the following day.
New Horizons were innovative in offering a digital picture service with a variety of frames available. The service
was provided with a technical team processing the pictures and a sales team interacting with the public.
With exWhy the focus was on their ‘music shop’ which included the sale of CD’s featuring our very own ‘Vehicle’
and other local bands. They represented themselves and Aylesford School with great aplomb. Following their
practical efforts company members took two YE examinations leading to an enterprise award. The remaining
elements are the composition of a company report and a presentation evening profiling the years activities.

At just after 4pm on Friday 8th February the Aylesford Snowsports Trip left for a week of skiing and
snowboarding at one of Europe’s premier venues; Davos in Switzerland. Forty-eight students and six
staff survived an epic coach journey through France, Germany and Luxembourg.
On Sunday morning, under beautiful blue skies, experienced skiers and boarders led the way from our
accommodation down the hill to the ski lifts whilst the first timers looked in awe at the size of the mountains and hoped all they had learned at the Snowdome would be enough.
By the end of day one, the busy chatter indicated that everyone had a great first day. After dinner, the
Sixth Form students went by train to Klosters to go bowling at a Hotel in the town. Despite the fact that
it was quite possibly the worst bowling alley in the known world, everyone enjoyed the novelty. It was a
good way to celebrate David Greger’s birthday.
In the evenings we had great fun at the outdoor ice-rink and joined in the chants supporting the town’s
ice hockey team HC Davos as they thrashed Zug 7-2. On the Wednesday night, everyone’s brain cells
were given a workout by Mr Brannan’s ‘Not in the Pub’ Quiz.
One memory of the trip that will last a long time is that of Kat Cowlard’s spectacular crash. No
damage was done, except maybe to the yellow box she ran into! The video has already gone to
You’ve Been Framed, but if you ask Mr Darren nicely he might show you a sneak preview.
Following the clear out of the rooms on Friday morning we went out for our last day on the slopes.
Although tired, the enthusiasm for being out there was still obvious. Everyone wanted to do more challenging runs, including the very steep black run from the top of the mountain for the advanced skiers.
The beginner skiers group completed a run in 15 minutes that had taken two and a half hours on the
first day.
Overall, a brilliant week and plans are already being made to repeat the experience next year.
