We’re Here for You—and Your Success.
“
Everyone I met was
searching for something;
some already knew what
they were looking for
while others hoped they would find
it during their stay there. College
wasn’t just full of classes —it was
a class in itself.
”
— Vladimir Neykov, digital artist, from Bulgaria
“
I loved (my) classes and I learned so much
from them.… Faculty members…remain very
important in my life. When I was feeling
down or when I was feeling lost, (they) were
always there for me. We also had a lot of
fun together, whether we went on a trip or
attended a party! Without (them), I don’t
think I would be where I am today.
”
— Naomi Osawa, graduate with a Political Science
degree from SUNY Binghamton, from Japan
At FM we are committed to helping you reach your educational goals. We do this by
creating an informal but respectful relationship between students and teachers, a
relationship that promotes both learning and personal adjustment to a new environment.
Teaching and advising are our most important activities. We are a small institution
and you will be treated as an individual, benefiting from a student/faculty ration of
20 to 1. Nearly 150 international students, representing 20 countries, are enrolled
annually, making up five percent of the college population.
You Can Get There from Here: Transferring for
a Four-Year Degree.
When you graduate, you have the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at an
almost unlimited choice of institutions. Students have continued their studies at
universities within New York State, such as The State University of New York at Albany,
SUNY Plattsburgh, Syracuse University, City University of New York (CUNY) and many
others, as well as colleges out of the state, such as Florida State University or the
University at Berkley.
English as a Second Language (ESL).
FM offers a full-time Intensive English Language Program for students who need to
improve their language ability before beginning a college degree or certificate
program. The program is also intended for those who want to study English for career
or social purposes before returning to their countries. Students receive 20 to 25 hours
of instruction each week. On arrival, a free English placement exam is given to
determine the level of English study you will need.
Combined ESL and Degree Program Admission.
If you intend to continue studies on the FM campus after ESL
study, single admission can be granted for the English Language
Program and an academic degree or certificate program.
Admission as a full-time student to an academic program is
contingent on the successful completion of the ESL Program. The
required TOEFL score of 61 on the internet based test (or 500 on
the paper based test) is waived when the dual admission option
is chosen and the ESL Program is successfully completed.
FM Accreditation.
Fulton-Montgomery Community College is a unit of the State
University of New York, the largest public university system in
the world. It is accredited by the Middle State Association of
Colleges and Secondary Schools and its programs are supervised by the New York State Department of Education.
FM International Students Application
(If the application is not enclosed in this pocket, you may download and print a copy at
www.fm.suny.edu/international)
Step-by-Step Instructions for Admission.
1. Fully complete the International Student Application for Admission. Please make
sure that all your documents bear your name exactly as written in your passport and
academic records.
2. Fully complete the Certificate of Financial Responsibility. Study for one academic
year (10 months) or longer requires a minimum of $20,000 U.S. per year (documentation
for the first year only is required). Study for one semester requires a minimum of $10,000.
Students studying only for short periods need to pay in advance for each month of study.
Estimated Individual Student Costs per year (40 weeks):
Tuition & Fees (2 semesters) = $ 8,000
Health Insurance*
= $ 1,000
Textbooks & Supplies
= $ 1,000
Room, Meals, etc.
= $ 9,000
Personal Expenses
= $ 1,000
(Also includes: refundable security deposit and utilities)
*Health insurance coverage is mandatory. Students will purchase a College recommended
plan upon enrollment.
If a student wishes to have family members (spouse or children) accompany them, the
following additional amounts must be included in the financial support: $3,000 per year
for spouse; $1,500 per year for each child. Please write a separate note to include with the
application if dependents will accompany the student. The name, date of birth and gender
of each dependent must be listed in the letter.
3. Enclose all required documents as specified in their original form or as certified copies.
Documents must be written in English or be official certified translations.
4. Submit original TOEFL scores if applicable. The campus TOEFL code for FMC is 2254.
Students are NOT required to submit a TOEFL score. The information can be helpful though
if scores are available. Students without a TOEFL score of 61 or higher on the internet
based test (or equivalent) will be tested upon arrival for appropriate English studies.
5. Enclose the completed and verified Student Immunization Record Form — only required
for students studying for a semester or longer. Can be sent later as it is required for
enrollment — not admission.*
6. If you are currently studying in the United States, please have your current International
Student Advisor submit the Foreign Student Transfer Form.* You should also send all other
documents as stated on the application form.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. If an application is received less than 4-6 weeks
before the term begins, consideration for admission for that term can not be guaranteed.
Applications received late will be considered for the next session unless otherwise indicated.
Academic Programs terms start: Fall semester
Spring semester
Late August
Late January
*Forms are available from our website: www.fmcc.suny.edu
Please follow links to Future Students and then the International Students homepage
Challenging and Supportive, too.
At FM, students are encouraged to discover their individual talents and abilities.
In the classroom, you will encounter a disciplined course of study with the support
of professors and the camaraderie of peers. You can expect to enjoy learning in
a setting that is always challenging but never intimidating. At FM, education is a
lesson in interaction, in discovering not what to think, but how to think.
Great Location.
FM is situated in the small, rural and historic community of
Johnstown, New York, approximately 65 km from the state
capital, Albany. Upstate location offers a convenient four-hour
drive to Montreal, Canada, New York City and Boston.
Our beautiful setting offers you a healthy environment for
your studies. Four seasons are enjoyed on the campus, with
average temperatures of -5C in January and 25C in July.
Excellent Facilities.
The FM campus includes a classroom building, an extensive library and media center,
television production and art studios, a modern gymnasium and athletic facilities,
including soccer and baseball fields and official size swimming pool. The college
has state-of-the-art computer labs, a professional kitchen, theatre and other
teaching and learning facilities.
Friendly and Fun.
The Student Activities Board plans
many campus events, including
cultural, social, educational and
recreational activities. You may
also participate in any of the
college’s dozens of clubs and
organizations. The campus environment is small and intimate, yet active and
spirited. You will have the chance to get involved and make a difference. Besides
leaving here with a degree, you will leave with friends.
Plenty of Action.
Win or lose, there’s nothing like the excitement of a great
sporting event to make you feel like part of the team. You
can find it all here — at a Raiders basketball game or
soccer game, a regional baseball championship or in a wide
offering of other sports activities on campus.
In
order to complete your application, please be sure to submit:
Application form
Secondary school transcripts
If applicable, transcripts from other educational institutions
Completed Certificate of Financial Responsibility
If applicable, TOEFL score (TOEFL campus code for FM is 2254)
If you are transferring from WITHIN the United States, also include:
