ASCONA – DOLCE VITA
UNDER SWISS PALM TREES
Ascona is not known as the ‘Pearl of Lake
Maggiore’ for nothing. The romantic little
town is known internationally as an exclusive holiday destination with e
 xcellent
cultural offerings.
Ticino forms the southern part of Switzerland. Ascona
is located here, directly on Lake Maggiore, opposite
Locarno and west of the Maggia estuary. The sunkissed town, which is home to around 5500 residents
over an area of roughly 5 km², stretches out towards
the south-west along one of the long sides of the lake.
A road leading up the hillside connects Ascona with
the village of Ronco s/Ascona located on a plateau
high above the lake (351 m). The road along the shoreline leads to Porto Ronco, Brissago and eventually the
Italian border.
At 196 meters above
sea level, Ascona
is the lowest town in
Switzerland.

History
HISTORY AND
CULTURE
A prehistoric cremation cemetery from the
Bronze Age dated approx. 800 years B.C.
is evidence of the first settlers in Ascona.
Subsequent settlers included Ligurian
tribes, Lepontic Celts and the Romans.
In the 1960s, Ascona was considered one of the
most popular holiday destinations in Europe. In fact
so popular that the German car manufacturer Opel
named one of its cars the ‘Ascona’.
The historic centre of Borgo expands outward from
the 16th century church of San Pietro e Paolo. Its bell
tower is the symbol of the town. The many narrow
and winding lanes filled with boutiques and all kinds
of shops lead downwards towards the Piazza on the
lakeside promenade of Lungolago. With its palm
trees, patrician houses, and lake-facing arcades and
cafés, it is considered the smartest promenade
on Lake Maggiore. The view of the lake is unrivalled!
Monte Verità, or the ‘Mountain of Truth’, overlooks
Ascona. Unconventional thinkers founded a colony
here at the start of the 20th century that attracted
celebrities from all over the world, such as Hermann
Hesse, Paul Klee and James Joyce. Today the mountain is home to a seminar centre for the universities
of Lucerne and Zurich. A museum tells the story of
the unconventional colony.
“I don’t only love the
countryside and the
climate, I also love the
people of Ticino.”
H. Hesse
Hermann Hesse came
to Ticino in 1919 as
the ‘funny German with
the straw hat’.

HEAVENLY
VALLEYS
NATURE
Wild gorges and idyllic villages: a simple,
pristine natural environment awaits you
in the valleys of Ticino.
Valle Maggia
Swap the palm-lined banks of Lake Maggiore for the
foothills of the Alps: steep cliffs, the crystal clear
waters of the Maggia River and deep-green countryside. At 586 km², the Maggia Valley is the largest
valley in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland.
Here you will discover highlights such as the famous
church of star architect Mario Botta in Mogno. Or
take the high road to explore the old Walser village
of Bosco Gurin, whose inhabitants speak a medieval
Alemannic dialect.
Valle Verzasca
Unspoiled nature, steep slopes, the rich emeraldgreen waters of the Verzasca River and many little
waterfalls make the Verzasca Valley a wonder of
nature. A popular attraction is the 220-metre-high
dam in Vogorno, one of the highest in Europe.
Visitors are also captivated by the romantic ‘Ponte
dei Salti’ stone bridge in Lavertezzo. The Verzasca

in times past. Traces of this past, which are reflected
in the simple beauty of the buildings, also bear witness to the hard lives of the local inhabitants. Today,
the idyllic setting warms the heart of every visitor.
Nature
Centovalli
Extraordinary countryside, high mountain ranges
and exciting architecture make the Centovalli region
a charming place. The name Centovalli means ‘a
hundred valleys’ because a vast amount of little side
valleys branch off from Centovalli. The valley is bordered on both sides by mountain ranges reaching up
to 2188 metres in altitude. The church tower of
Intragna is the symbol of the ‘Terre di Pedemonte’
region. The famous and majestic 18th century bell
tower is a fine example of the architecture of the region and protects the gateway to Centovalli.
‘Lake Maggiore Express’
(mid-April to mid-October)
Castles, picturesque countryside and resplendent
nature provide amazement for visitors – the ‘Lake
Maggiore Express’ tour is a rail and boat excursion
which will remain long in the memory.
First you cross one of the wildest and most romantic
Centovalli railway
regions of Ticino on the picturesque Centovalli rail-

way. Then you will be enchanted by the Italian town
of Stresa and the Borromean islands before heading
back to Ascona on a boat. During the boat trip, you
will enjoy excellent views of Cannero Castle and the
Brissago Islands accompanied by a refreshing breeze.

WHAT A
PANORAMA!
ACTIVE
From mid-December to mid-October,
the mountain environment of CardadaCimetta offers a fantastic 360-degree
panoramic view and invites you to
explore the area with your hiking shoes
and backpack.
You will be impressed as soon as you step into the
modern cable car: in just under five minutes, you will
find yourself climbing from Orselina at 395 m above
sea level to the Cardada mountain station at 1340 m
above sea level.
From here, you can access a wide range of hiking
trails to suit different preferences. Would you prefer
a leisurely walk across the hills or are you looking
for the challenge of a difficult mountain walk to the
surrounding mountain peaks? Mountain hiking trails
lead from Cardada and Cimetta to the Cima della
Trosa (1869 m) and Madone (2039 m), both offering
spectacular Alpine panoramas.
Cardada is ideal for families, allowing them to have
fun together in the mountain air and explore a new
environment. For example, with a picnic or on the
‘play walk’ with its original, educational and exciting
games for children, spaced out at regular intervals
along the 1.2 km route.
And while the children explore the teepees at the
Indian village in the forest between the mountain
station and the chairlift, parents can enjoy some time
together as a couple.

FROM HOUSE
WINE TO THE BEST
MERLOT
CULINARY
Classics from Ticino, Italian wines or maybe even an organic wine? Our in-house
Enoteca leaves no wine desire unfulfilled.
Monte Ceneri divides Ticino into two geographical
zones which influence the winegrowing of the region: the Sottoceneri, the more southern area where
the terroir tends to be loamy and chalky, and the
northern Sopraceneri area surrounding Bellinzona
and Locarno, where the geology is characterised
by granite and gneiss rock.
The natural conditions in the Sottoceneri area give
its wines volume and velvety tannins. The minerals
typical of the Sopraceneri area give the local wine
structure and character, a pleasant level of acidity as
well as good ageing potential.
Try our house wine ‘Villa Saleggi’ as a classic red
Merlot or as the less well-known Bianco Ticinese variant. The white press of the red Merlot grape impresses connoisseurs with its mild acidity and velvety
palate with citrus fruit aromas.
Whether you fancy a house wine or an award-winning, premium Merlot: The cellar of our Enoteca
holds the right wine for every occasion. Also ask
about our certified organic wines.
We arrange guided wine
tastings for you at our
Enoteca or at wine shops
in the surrounding area
(e.g. Vini Delea). See the
weekly programme for
details of times and
places.

PLEASURE IN THE
GROTTO
CULINARY
A creamy risotto with a juicy piece of
meat, homemade pasta and other
delicacies of ‘Cucina nostrana’ await you
at the Osteria Grotto Villa Saleggi.
The name ‘Grotto’ refers to the natural rock caves
where the rural population of Ticino used to store
wine, ham and cheese. Over time, many farmers
transformed these ‘storage caves’ into social meeting places for tasting wine and other products.
Although our Osteria Grotto Villa Saleggi is not a
rock cave, it is still a typical Grotto offering regional
delicacies in a cosy atmosphere combined with
warm hospitality.
Our house specialities of ‘sirloin steak cooked on
a hot stone’, creamy risotto and golden polenta are
just a few tempting examples of ‘cucina nostrana’ –
the native cuisine.
Also try our homemade pasta and our many seasonal specialities. And, in summer, a fine pinch of
Ticinese air is also added to your dish on our
