From
the Desk of… Michael Lawrence, General Manager & COO
Without question, this year’s July 4th Celebration was one of the best
in recent memory! Just in case you missed the party (and there were not
many who did!), this was the first year we have used wristbands to
identify Members and authorized guests. As a joint initiative of the
Entertainment Committee and Management, the Board of Governors
gave total support to the plan of ensuring that only Colonial Members
and guests could enter the grounds and Clubhouse, and food and beverage charges could only be made to member accounts. Members could pick
up wristbands for their immediate family (colored red, white and blue)
and as many as they wanted for other family and friends (colored blue).
By day’s end, more than 2,000 member bands and 3,000 guest bands were
distributed! Clearly, the famous Colonial Fourth of July Party reaches out
to perhaps the largest single Membership event of the year.
According to the feedback we’ve received, the membership greatly enjoyed the food and beverage…the poolside DJ who moved to the 18th
Hole later in the day…the numerous children’s activities held inside the
Clubhouse…the perfect weather…and, of course, the fireworks, which
Special Events Manager Alexis Groesch had timed perfectly with the
music (with a much better sound system than before). One of the reasons
our fireworks show was so good is that Alexis contracted 30 minutes of
fireworks (the same amount as previous years) to be ignited within 25
minutes…her strategy worked perfectly, as it was an eye-boggling light
show. It was quite a party.
Now, here’s a story that will certainly make you as proud as I am of one
of our Staff Members – Mr. Kris Carrasalis, one of our busser/servers
who helps in the Cork Room, banquets, 19th Hole and pool. Last month,
I received an email from Banquet Manager Sue Tennis who was told the
story by long-time Member Susan Nix…
“Mr. Lawrence… I am writing to you at the request of Mrs. Susan Nix
who told me today that last night she had given “a couple of dollars” to Kris
for helping her with some to-go dinners. When she came to Breakfast this
morning, Kris asked Susan if he could speak with her. Kris explained that
when she gave him the two bills last night, one was actually a $1 bill…as she
intended…but the other was a $100 bill…and he gave it back to her! She was
quite taken aback and touched by his honesty, and asked me to promise I
would let you know.” Sue Tennis
Of course, I personally followed up with Kris to let him know how
proud we were of him, and he was pleasantly embarrassed concerning
all the attention. As he said, he was just doing what he knew was right”.
Kris is not alone in his “do-the-right-thing” philosophy and personal
character. His story is really the story of many, many of the staff members
here at Colonial who go out of their way to make your club experience as
warm and welcoming as it can be. And, thanks to Susan for passing on that
wonderful story to us.
And now for a little update on our on-going Capital projects…
Pool recap: new furniture installed…old furniture sold…new pool
vacuum installed…steps re-tiled…new diving boards installed…new, larger
towels in use and being better finished with our new dryer. Feedback has
been very positive. We have an estimate from Marvin Electronics for a plan
to install a much better sound system that can be built on-to over time.
The goal is to replace the three outside speakers and stereo system that we
have had for almost 20 years, and to add to the system as we can afford to.
As you know, the key to a good sound system and quality fidelity is more
speakers at lower volume, and that’s how we can have a good sound system
for around-the-pool enjoyment (inter-club contests and dive-in movies, for
example) and not disturb our neighbors on Country Club Circle.

Turf Talk
By Scott Ebers, CGCS, Golf Course Superintendent
I really hate the August newsletter. I really don’t want to talk about the
greens because it’s so hard to guess what we will have in August. Although I
can say that this year to date has definitely been a struggle and it will not go
down as one of my favorites. I have decided to revisit last year’s restoration
now that we can see most of it in its fully grown in state and have had some
months to fully digest the changes. Here is what stands out to me as the
primary achievements of the work.
Consistency: This has always been a great golf course, but there were
significant areas that lacked consistency from hole to hole or feature to
feature. We used to have artificially elevated and misaligned tees that did not
relate to each other very well, whereas now we have consistent, uniform tees
set in the ground. We used to have four different kinds of retaining walls on
Nos. 9, 10, 13, and 16 lakes, now we have an elegant native stone that is
grassed over the top so it is never played on top of. We used to have bunkers
that were barely functional and very inconsistent from bunker to bunker,
and now we have beautiful, functional bunkers that drain well and can
be exceedingly playable hours after a heavy rain.
Coherence: To me this is similar to consistency, but reflects a more subtle
overall impression of how well all eighteen holes fit together. And again, while
the “old” golf course was fine, it didn’t have the coherency of a Master plan
where every element is brought together by one visionary, in this case Keith
Foster. Keith’s insistence that the renovation not be a reflection of him, but
rather the original architectural intent, really pulled together the coherence of
the golf course, especially the teeing grounds and the green surrounds.
Removing the masses behind some greens, accentuating the fall offs, using short
cut, and lowering the overall green surrounds has made all the green complexes
look more “pushed up,” more old school. The tees are set down into the ground
more and make the trees and bunkers framing the fairways seem taller and more
menacing. The hazards are much more visible and imposing from the tee shots
on 1, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, and 17 than they used to be and all of them “tell”
you precisely where and how your ball should be aimed and shaped.
Elegance: Obviously a very subjective thing, but to me the restoration
helped pare down some extraneous elements, dialed up the drama of the
bunkers, and dialed in the overall look and classic feel of the golf course. The
golf course is very transparent, very simple, and yet very beautiful at the same
time, a task often botched with a “modern” restoration. Some of my favorite
visual “improvements” are: the second shot on No. 1, the tee shots on No. 5,
and No. 6, the first and second shots on No. 7, the third shot on No. 11, the
tee shot on No. 12, No. 13, No. 14, and No. 16, and the second shot on No.
18. To me, when I look at the “before and after” pictures it is obvious how
much more striking and beautiful these shots are than they used to be. And
while few of them have been altered dramatically with respect to their shot
values, it does add to our enjoyment, I think, when we play golf on a course
that is pretty, as well as challenging.
Function: Finally, we clearly advanced the functionality of many elements on the golf course that we struggled with before. The most obvious is
the day to day playability of the bunkers, and when it rains, especially when
it rains a lot, I still have to pinch myself when we go out onto the golf course
and find no ponds in the bunkers and sand remaining on the faces. I would
guess we spend anywhere from 1/5 to 1/10 the time in repairing our bunkers
after a rain than we used to, and they are much, much more playable when
we are through. We no longer have the water stream across No. 1 after a rain
that destroyed the first fairway bunker; the water now goes around it and
finds a drain. The added length helped put fairway bunkers back in play for
the longest hitters and, hence, adds to the strategic functionality of a great golf
course. The low wet areas on No. 11 and No. 14 fairway landing areas have
been eliminated and both tee shots are more challenging. The uniformity and
levelness of the tees are much improved. In short, I believe the restoration
combines the best attributes of form and function, and I am still really thrilled
with the results. I hope you are, too.

Golf Rules Refresher….
It’s hard to write this article on July 3 knowing we have had a very hot
and humid summer so far. So what is my prediction for this August? What
I can predict is an uncrowded golf course waiting for you to play with your
fellow members or some of your favorite guests. I can predict that we will
have an abundance of summer apparel that has to be sold to make room for
the new fall lines.
Now that you all have read my predictions, you can see they are guesses
based on my 23 years at Colonial Country Club. August at Colonial is
generally slower than most months be it school, vacations or just the heat.
I personally enjoy playing knowing that every hole has a tree that will shade
you and greens that will hold shots from the fairway or rough. With the
lower rounds this month it is a great month to get around the course fast.
It is also a great month to invite one of the pros to play golf with you or
your foursome. My assistants and I are always looking for a game and a
chance to get to know you better.
We have very few tournaments scheduled - one to be exact - and it is
only nine holes (August 7 at 6:00 p.m.) The first two Twilight events were
very fun so call the golf shop or check the club’s website for the details of this
twilight event.
The golf shop’s annual summer sale starts August 1 and will continue
through the end of the month. This is a great time to save some money or
use your golf shop credit because, I promise, we have plenty of cool things
on sale from which to choose. Thanks to your support we are able to keep a
fully stocked golf shop with the latest apparel from golf’s major suppliers.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer, and we look forward to
seeing you at the club.

There are several practices that are not allowed at Colonial but are
continually occurring. I am going to briefly summarize the rules to reinforce
them and, hopefully, alleviate future violations. These all have to do with
the conditioning of the course, as well as the overall enjoyment of the
majority of members.
1) Keeping all four wheels of your cart on the paths around tees and
greens. Most people always park their cart with two wheels on and two
wheels off the path or with no wheels touching the path. The proper
procedure is to keep all four tires on the paths around tees and greens at
all times.
2) Cutting across holes number two and three when driving to the Driving
Range. The correct practice is to take the path around two green and
three tee box.
3) Once you arrive at the range keep your cart on asphalt or concrete
not up on the tee box. Many players are observed driving their cart
either right next to tee box (west end) or right behind the tee box (east end).
4) Not registering with the golf shop or starter before playing regardless
of the number of holes. This includes playing a few holes on the way to
the range or returning from the range.218 All players are required to let
either the starter or the pro shop know you are playing regardless if you
are only playing one hole.
5) Practicing on the golf course. Practice is prohibited at all times on the
course. An occasional extra tee shot on par 4s or par 5s but extra shots
into greens are not allowed.
6) Not fixing ball marks or raking bunkers properly. As my father taught
me, “leave the course in better shape than when you arrived.”
7) Allowing faster players to play through regardless if they are a twosome.
8) Completing your round in less than four hours. Always be ready to
play when it is your turn to prevent unnecessary delays in the round.
9) Observing handicap cart rules.
10) Wearing proper golf attire. Collard shirts, shorts at least three inches
from the knees and no Cargo shorts.
11) Picking up your balls when you finish on the practice green. We try
to keep them picked up but many times the staff is busy with other jobs.
The Board of Governors has asked the golf staff to enforce these
rules and to record violations. Repeat offenders will be dealt with by the
Head Golf Professional, General Manager, and the Executive Committee.
Thank you for taking care of your club and respecting your fellow
members.
Ladies on the Links
By Gail Friedman
It’s 104, my brain is fried
I thought I played the ball as it lied
But maybe I moved it under a tree
So I could get some shade on me
The sweat is getting in my eyes
Where are the clouds in these sunny skies
On down the fairway I do go
Energy lacking, a little slow
I am parched, I feel like hell
I approach the divot where my ball fell
I give it a nudge, it's too hot for pride
No big deal, my brain is fried
As I continue to play my game
I remember those words “Take Dead Aim!”
Then thru the sweat I think I see
My ball take a dive so grace-ful-ly
And then a miracle happens here
the waters part, no longer there
my ball arises for me to hit
into a very sandy pit
But it is so hot and a dust storm ensues
I'm afraid my sight I do lose
and during that convenient vision gap
my ball finds the grass beside the trap
My hallucinations continue to flow
How many strokes, I do not know
But I'm on the green rolling towards the hole
Bank shot off the flagstick into the goal!
A record low for me today
as I play the ball as it lay?
But remember it's 104
And my brain isn't functioning anymore!
Here are our winners who braved the heat and kept their brains intact!

Weighty Matters
By Tamara Zrostlik, Fitness Director
FLU SHOTS AVAILABLE
I think exercise is the cheapest medicine we have. In this unstable economic time, our lives can be a mixture of worry, anxiety over finances, or
just the fear of the unknown. Stress happens to everyone. It’s important to
know how to respond to it. When stress is present, cortisol is secreted into
our bodies. Sometimes it has positive effects such as small bursts of energy
and lower sensitivity to pain. However, if stress isn’t alleviated, the body
continues to pump out more cortisol which causes higher blood pressure
and lower immunity. Exercise increases the body’s ability to cope with stress.
It puts you in a more relaxed state because it helps to control blood pressure
and reduce anxiety. Exercise can be as simple as hiking, jogging, walking,
and biking. Joining a group exercise class can also be productive not only
physically, but emotionally and socially. Give yourself 5 minutes of quiet
time each day to concentrate on breathing and quieting your mind from the
external world. Get the proper amount of sleep each night. Seven to nine
hours of sleep a night has been found to be average for most people. Finally, feel good by doing good. Helping others during these hard times provides a feeling that you are not alone. Face these difficult times head on and
you will find yourself in a much healthier state of mind and body.

As August continues we hope to be completing our resurfacing project on the outdoor courts. Although it was a long
project with the BRAND NEW fencing AND the BRAND
NEW courts, the end result is well worth the wait. I know it
is an unwelcomed disruption to most but let’s please remember how fortunate we are to get not only new fencing this year
but also to get brand new courts each and every year.
We are starting to gear up for fall leagues so please check
with the shop if you are interested in USTA or Interclub play.
We have several USTA teams playing out of Colonial this

Interclub will most likely start on Tuesday, September 1 and
USTA will begin play on Friday, September 4. As always, if
you are interested in coming down to play on either Tuesdays
or Fridays, please call the tennis shop prior to your arrival to
check court availability.
Come down and enjoy big discounts in the tennis shop
this month as we make room for all of the great fall merchandise arriving shortly.1411 Enjoy savings on apparel items as
much as 75% off and racquets up to 50% off!
We will be having our Interclub Kickoff event on Tuesday,
August 25 at 9:30 A.M. If you would like to register for
this fun event please call the tennis shop. This is open to all

By Alexis Groesch,
Special Events Manager
Why is it whenever August comes around I find myself asking “Where
did the summer go?” Seems like the summer is endless when school gets out
in June. . .vacations planned, camps booked. . . .and then all of the sudden,
summer is over! Unlike summer vacation though, events at Colonial are always going on!
Even though August is the end of summer, it marks the start of football
season . . . and tailgating! Be sure to contact our Catering Department at
(817) 927-4204 or visit us online at www.colonialfw.com for this year’s tailgating menu to plan your party. This is going to be a great year for football!
Summer Fun and Sports Camp are, alas, coming to an end this month.
Our littlest members will learn about the “History of the Game” and about
some of the greatest golfers, including the legendary Ben Hogan, and they
will also learn about “Endangered Animals” in Summer Fun this month.
They will also learn how to interact with authority and the importance of
time management. In Sports Camp, our little athletes will be fine-tuning
their skills at tennis, soccer, basketball and many other sports. If you haven’t
signed up for one of these camps yet, there is still time to get your registration forms in. Forms are available at the Front Desk or on our website,
www.colonialfw.com.
Come celebrate summer 2009 at our Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social
on Saturday, August 22 from 11:30 A.M. – 2:00 P.M. on the Front Lawn.
We will have fun activities for the entire family, as well as live entertainment!
Let’s also celebrate summer at our upcoming “Summer in the Andes:
Wines from Argentina & Chile” Wine Tasting on Wednesday, August 19
from 6:30-8:30 P.M. JR Clark, from the Fort Worth Central Market, will
host the class and share with us some of the amazing light, summer wines he
sampled on his recent trip to Argentina and Chile.
Our Ladies’ Luncheon Series has had some wonderful speakers this
summer, and the speakers we have scheduled for the upcoming months
are no different. On Thursday, September 17, we will have Dave Lieber,
“The Watchdog,” from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram here to share with us
“Moving to Texas: Is the Bark Worse than the Bite?” On Thursday, November 19
we will play host to another fantastic fashion show by Luskey’s/Ryon’s to
get us all ready for the 114th Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo! Be sure to
watch for more information around the Clubhouse, in your upcoming
Columns, and on the website for our August and October speakers, as well!
Our Culinary Theme Night series has some fun, flavorful events
planned in the coming months. What better way to celebrate summer than
enjoying delicious lobster at our Lobster Festival Culinary Theme Night
on Thursday, August 27. Next month, I hope you can to join us for our
“Beale Street Blues Barbecue” Culinary Theme Night on Friday,
September 18 and finally – in celebration of Halloween – on Thursday,
October 22 join us for our “Murder Mystery” Culinary Theme Night
and see if you can figure our “Whodunit.”
Are you 50 or better and single? Are you interested in meeting fellow members and friends that are 50 or better too? Join us on Wednesday, September
16 for our “50 or Better” Senior Singles Night. We will have a member sign
bar and complimentary hors d’oeuvres along with live music. This is a great
opportunity to meet some new faces and enjoy an evening at your club.
12
And kids. . . be sure to mark Friday, October 30 on your calendar and
join us for our Fall Festival at the Club. There will be plenty of activities,
food and fun for everyone! Be sure to watch for more information in the upcoming Columns and on our website on this event.2034
Even though summer is coming to an end, the list of activities for the
membership at Colonial is still going strong. If you have any suggestions of
events you would like to see, please let me know. I look forward to seeing you
around your club!

Tennis Court progress: still anticipating completion by August 15th,
even though we experienced unanticipated problems during construction,
such as accidentally cutting electricity cables and water distribution lines for a
few courts (hard to see through concrete!). At any rate, it’s looking great so far!
Nursery recap: completed…well received…and looks fantastic! Many
thanks (again) to Mrs. Lynn Allen, who devoted a lot of her personal time
in helping us design the facility and select the right equipment. By the way,
the pricing is only $6 per child per hour, and the second (or more) child
from the same family is only $3 per hour. We hope that young families that
wish to visit the Club for dinner, tennis, pool or to work out, or for one of
our many special events, will take advantage of this Member-only amenity.
Fitness Studio progress: have completed the relocation of (old) fitness
equipment to the new Fitness Studio location (formerly the Outrigger dining room). After the completion of the new Fitness Center, the Fitness Studio will be renovated. We are glad to announce that the
construction/renovation of the Fitness Center is back on schedule…we had
lost a few days when Facilities Director Bill Ward suffered what was believed
to be a heart attack…but don’t worry! After very careful follow-up care, the
doctors reasoned that Bill’s EKG’s (which were discovered when he was being
prepared for rotator cuff surgery) were not as bad as first indicated, and that
he will be okay – as long as he takes his medicine!
Card Room recap: completed and with much positive feedback from
the ladies. By the way, we will be working with the Chef to design a few a la
carte sandwiches and salads that Rose can serve to the ladies in the Room.
We’ll have more details available as we work them out.
And…
The 18th Deck: clearly, and understandably, the weather has been too,
too uncomfortable for outside lounging…especially on the west side of the
Clubhouse! Don’t worry…we are not abandoning this picturesque venue!
Everyone agrees that it will be the perfect watering hole come the end of
summer and beginning of September.
Well, back to working on the 2009/2010 Annual Budget…see you
around the Club.
