THE SOUND OF GLARUS
Germany/Finland/Switzerland 2009
What has Swiss cheese in common with world music? What is the world famous drummer Billy Cobham
doing in the Swiss mountains? Are alphorns comparable to a breathing therapy? And what is a double
yodel?
All these questions are answered in THE SOUND OF GLARUS.
A goatherd plays blues on his harmonica in the loneliness of a Swiss alp. The alphorn starts and allows
communication over the impregnable mountains like it is said in Swiss tradition. The double yodels appear
like in a cliché, until all sounds unite with the rhythms of the world famous drummer Billy Cobham to the
„Sound of Glarus“.
The music documentary of Mika Kaurismäki explains the term „world music“ and makes it understandable.
The movie leads the spectator into this universal language of music in an impressive and sometimes
bizarre way. Music does not require an explanation. It withdraws itself from the evaluation, because each
kind of music reflects a special culture. Simultaneously, music succeeds in connecting cultures.
The documentary unfolds an exemplary discussion about world music by using traditional Swiss music and
its typical instruments.
Billy Cobham together with Swiss musicians succeed in converting folkloristic traditions and techniques in
modern arrangements and to unite all these different elements on stage. An impressive presentation of
universal music – globalisation in a different way.
