From the Office of Institutional Advancement
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
You may have recently received a letter from Dr. Edward Gere introducing you to the Monsignor Donovan Fund.
“Previously known as the SJ/MDHS Annual Appeal, the Monsignor Donovan Fund is the foundation of philanthropy for
St. Joseph/Monsignor Donovan High School and named in honor of our beloved founder, Monsignor Lawrence Donovan.
Though the name has changed, the critical area of support remains the same: tuition assistance and unrestricted giving
for the high school’s greatest needs.
Monsignor Donovan was a visionary and his dream of providing a continuing Catholic education for the children of
Ocean and lower Monmouth Counties became a reality in the fall of 1962. Almost fifty years later, the dream of this active,
dynamic pastor has culminated in a high school in which the parish and the local community take great pride.
How pleased Monsignor Donovan would be to see his students living their faith on a daily basis! They build houses,
mentor the young, support the elderly, embrace the needy, and feed the poor. Monsignor Donovan students are academic
achievers. The Class of 2010 was awarded $19.6 million in college grant and scholarship money – more than any other
high school in the Diocese of Trenton. MDHS is also the home of many outstanding and award-winning high school
athletes, performers, and artists. Monsignor Donovan would be thrilled to witness our Griffin Spirit!”
On behalf of Dr. Gere, I encourage you to make an investment in The Monsignor Donovan Fund. By doing so, you are helping
to continue the tradition of excellence started by Monsignor Lawrence Donovan. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

A Message from Dr. Gere
Wrestling Room—a Griffin First!
Dear Graduates, Parents and Friends of SJ/MDHS:
St. Joseph/Monsignor Donovan High School
has a rich 48-year history. Over those
years, the school has been blessed by the
tremendous growth of the faculty, staff and
student body, our numerous athletic and
co-curricular activities and our academic
program, all of which occurred in a facility
that did not expand simultaneously. The
infrastructure that was developed in 1962
remains virtually unchanged. There is an
exception, however.
Over the past several months, the passion of
three MDHS wrestling coaches (Neil Saunders ’94, Keith Koehler ’95 and
Brian Ventrella ’90), has energized the administration, alumni and parents to
support them in a project that was once just a dream. With the help of many
hands and generous hearts, a former locker room in the basement has been
converted into the school’s first ever dedicated space for the wrestling team.
Thanks to much hard work and commitment, the wrestlers will no longer
have to practice in the school cafeteria!
As you can see, the project is physically complete. So far, an estimated total
of $11,200 has been donated in labor and materials to fix walls, complete
plumbing and electricity, and prepare the ceilings and floors, and that doesn’t
include the value of donated manpower! The school is indebted to all those
individuals who believe in the wrestling program and in Monsignor Donovan
High School.
To financially complete this project, the school needs to raise additional funds
to cover the expense of the wall mats. I invite you to lend your support to
this project and to the wrestling team, whose season begins on December 18,
2010 at the Colt Classic. Thank you for your consideration.
God Bless!
Edward G. Gere, Ed.D.

Class of 2010 Makes School History!
During a ceremony held on June 14, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Church in Toms River, 227
students became Monsignor Donovan High School’s newest graduating class. The graduation
began at 5:00 p.m. with a Baccalaureate Mass and was followed by commencement exercises.
Reverend John P. Bambrick, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church and director of Monsignor Donovan
High School presided over the Mass. Reverend Patrick McPartland, MDHS chaplain served as the homilist. The
ceremonies were also attended by Mrs. JoAnn Tier, Superintendent and Secretary of Catholic Education for the
Diocese of Trenton.
Class Valedictorian Kirby Costello offered the Honors Address to the graduates and guests. Kirby now
attends Georgetown University. Maria Moresco, Salutatorian, delivered the Farewell Address at the Senior
Awards Ceremony held on June 10, 2010. She attends Columbia University. Sean Milana, who is currently
studying at Auburn University in Alabama, was the recipient of the Bishop George W. Ahr Medal in recognition
of outstanding commitment to Christian values.
The Class of 2010 earned a record $19.6 million in college scholarship and grant money. This was also
the highest monetary award for 2010 received by any other Catholic high school’s graduating class in the
Diocese of Trenton.
Katie DeTuro signed a NCAA National Letter of Intent to attend and play soccer at Virginia Tech. Meagan
Brosnan received an appointment to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Special award recipients included Hannah Garafano and Rose Garofalo who both received the Spirit of
St. Dominic Award. Kevin Carter and Katie DeTuro were each awarded the Griffin Award. The Monsignor
Donovan Spirit Award was presented to Nicholas Colucci and Kirby Costello.
The Administration also recognized Erica Fitzpatrick, Kimberly Julien and Maria Moresco as National
Merit Commended Scholars. Additionally, Julien was also recognized as a Finalist in the 2010 National

The Class of 1980 30-year reunion was held on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Patio Bar in Point Pleasant Beach.
We all met there for drinks and food. We had a great turnout and a lot of fun. We had about 50 people show
up and as a result of us all being together, we have all stayed in touch via Facebook.® Those of us who were in
town early, met up the night before the reunion at Sunsets.

Class of 1990
20 year Reunion
Contributed by Anysia Marcell Kiel ’90
The Monsignor Donovan class of 1990 celebrated their 20th reunion
on October 16, 2010 at the Spring Lake Manor. Mina Ciafre Lorusso
organized the event with the help of committee members Jennifer Dolan
Curatolo, Anysia Marcell Kiel, and Susan Scott Buchenberger. The
well-attended reunion was nostalgic, uniting friends from all over the
country. It was a night of sharing old memories and creating new ones.
The Class of 1990 honored their deceased classmates (Craig Doscher,
Michael Fuccile and Heather Rose) with a memorial table of photos,
flowers, and a moment of silence. They also held a gift auction and
collected money for the families of the deceased classmates.
A great time was had by all. They can’t wait for the next get together.
Thanks from the Alumni Office to Mina, Jennifer, Anysia, and Susan.

Boys Soccer Alumni Game
Saturday, November 6, 2010
Contributed by Coach Mike Kearney ’80
Under a gray sky on the green fields of Whitty, Griffin Boys Soccer Alumni gathered Saturday, November 6 for
an afternoon of nostalgia, laughs and spirited competition. Participants included players from the inaugural team
from the mid 1970s, to the relative youngsters from this century’s squads. Following the action, and presumably
prior to the ice baths, players and families were refreshed by the Boemio brothers at the Sawmill in Seaside Park.
Some points of interest from the day:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
The Class of ’03 was best represented with Tom Frazzitta, Tom Gannon, & Tom Longo
(players not named Tom were blackballed)
Frazzitta, Gannon & Longo were joined by two teammates from their Shore Conference
Tournament Championship team, Justin McGrath and Tim Brennan, both from the Class of ’04
The youngest players were Nicholas Panariello ’05 and Pat Kennedy ’06
The oldest to take the field was Tim Kearney, Class of ’79 (didn’t look a day over ’80)
Other players who should have known better were Bob Dolan ’88 and Tom Brown from the Class of ’81 (neither suffered any discernible injuries)
In attendance was Kevin Kearney, Class of ’78, the first Griff to ever score a varsity goal, and the first
to be honored as an All County player (and the first old guy bright enough not to participate)
Michael McCullion and Christopher Luongo represented the Class of ’96 along with their
old teammate Josh Simpson ’95
Two members of the ’92 team that shut out CBA in an historic SCT tilt were on the field: Adrien Campelo, ’93 and goalkeeper Keith Stryker, ’93
Several of the alumni have gone on to coach, including youth coaches Bob Dolan for Manchester /Lakewood and Tim Kearney in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; high school coaches Keith Stryker (TREast) and
Justin McGrath (Pingry); and St. Joe’s & Donovan coaches Kevin Kearney, Josh Simpson,
Mike McCullion and Tom Frazzitta
