F ROM THE P ASTOR
Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Have you ever experienced an overwhelming sense of peace or gratitude while looking out from a beautiful
vista? Perhaps you have felt a mystical chill as the winds of a storm approach? Maybe it was during a
conversation or hearing an old song that your heart suddenly felt at ease and you knew that everything
would be ok? I pray you have had such an experience. I believe that such special experiences are the
presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst.
The Bible has many different ways of describing God and the same is true about the Holy Spirit. The Holy
Spirit is described as being a mighty wind, fire, a dove, breath, even flaming tongues. In John 20:19-22, after
his resurrection, Jesus appears to his disciples hidden in a small room in Jerusalem, who are trying to avoid
the authorities and escape with their lives. Jesus offers them peace, and then he reminds them that “as the
Father has sent me, so I send you.” He proceeds to breathe on them and says, “receive the Holy Spirit.”
We also remember the story of the birth of the church from Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit descends upon the
disciples on the day of Pentecost. A violent rush of wind from heaven filled the house where the disciples
were staying; tongues of fire appeared among them and rested on each of them. The Holy Spirit gave them
the ability to speak in a wide variety of languages. The disciples then went out into Jerusalem to the great
varieties of peoples living there and shared with them God’s deeds of power. Everyone was amazed. On
May 24th, we will celebrate Pentecost—the birth of the church!
The apostle Paul not only celebrates God’s presence with us in the form of the Holy Spirit, but he writes
about many of the gifts of the Spirit that Christians are blessed with, and the unique ways we honor God
by using these gifts.
It’s quite a gift to know that God’s Holy Spirit is among us and has blessed each of us with special abilities.
On May 17th, we will celebrate the many wonderful ways that God uses us and our gifts in our church and
beyond. Though our church is small, we are mighty in our gifts—we have wonderful cooks, we have people
who have unbelievable musical abilities, we have people who visit people in their homes and give them
comfort, we have teachers who relay the story of the gospel in a variety of creative ways, we have people who
donate items to our church and to various ministries in the community, we have people who give of their
time to do repairs around the church, we have many people who serve in various service organizations
throughout Monroe, and the list goes on and on.
I encourage you to consider sharing some of your gifts with our church and the greater Monroe community.
The good news is that our gifts usually give us a great sense of joy—and others, too. We not only honor God
when we share our gifts and live into our calling, but we find that each and every one of our gifts are
important in the world! May the Holy Spirit continue to move among us in new and mysterious ways!
Thanks be to God!
-Jesse

and graduate schools, our Sunday School Teachers and Students, as well

IN OUR CHURCH AND BEYOND!
SERMON SERIES
Throughout May and into early June,
Jesse will be spending
5 Sundays focusing on
Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.
Ephesus was the Roman capital of Asia
Minor (modern day Turkey) and a center
of commerce and religious pilgrimage.
Ephesians is a letter full of many themes,
including reconciliation between
Jews and Gentiles, and there is even
a sense of greater harmony and
unity in the universe.
Jesse will be incorporating some
interesting videos and activities into
the sermon time, so be sure to join us!
SAVE THE DATE!!
Annual Planning meeting for Deacons and Elders
Our annual planning meeting for Deacons and Elders will be
on Sunday, August 23rd at the home of Donna Schluesche.
We will gather at 4:00 p.m. for a time of fellowship and
games. Dinner will be at 5:15 p.m.; brats, hot dogs, buns,
and soda will be provided, Please bring a dish to pass, a
folding chair and your calendar.
After dinner, we’ll take some time to plan worship and events
for the 2015-2016 program year. Be sure to come prepared
with ideas that you have discussed previously with your
committees.
DO YOU LOVE COFFEE AND CARE ABOUT TREATING PEOPLE FAIRLY?
Café Justo is a coffee grower cooperative based in Salvador Urbina,
Chiapas, Mexico. They market a pure, organic coffee which is grown,
harvested and marketed in the spirit of justice. Their goal is to provide
incentives for people to remain on their family lands.
We will soon begin serving this delicious coffee at our coffee hour as well
as having pound bags available for purchase. This unique ministry was
started by a Presbyterian Young Adult Volunteer and a Catholic priest.
It is supported by the PCUSA and is a integral part of PCUSA Border
Ministries. In fact, we hope to bring some of our members to experience
life on the border and all the fantastic ministries that are happening
there. For more information: http://www.justcoffee.org/

MISSION NEWS
Green County Interfaith Food Pantry
Because there are fewer food drives during the summer and children are home from school, our area
food pantry has an increase in the number of clients coming for food. If you are able, please consider
donating food items throughout the summer for families in need. Thank you!
Pentecost Offering
We will be taking the “Pentecost Offering” on Sunday, May 24th. The money that is collected is
dedicated for programs that benefit children, youth, and young adults. 1/3 of Pentecost offering
stays with the local community. This amount is directed to go to the summer youth programs of the
Monroe Department of Parks and Recreation.
Mission Brainstorming Session
Tina Duemler, chair of our mission committee, is seeking interested individuals to join the Mission
committee to brainstorm special projects for our church to be involved in. If you have any suggestions
or would like to join the mission committee, you can contact Tina
at [email protected]
UPC Garden
We are trying our garden once again this year. The produce collected
from our garden is donated to the Food Pantry. If you are interested in
helping to maintain the garden, contact Lois Baker or Al Hudson.
We are interesting in having folks available to water the garden, and
pick produce, etc. Thanks!
S TAY C ONNECTED
Do you receive our weekly E-news?
We send out a weekly email letting folks know what is happening at UPC
in the coming weeks. Please contact Lisa if you would like to receive
this weekly E-news—we want to always keep everyone in the loop!
If you have changed your email address, or any other info, please let
Lisa know.
Once a month, we attach the minutes from Session meetings in our
weekly E-news as well. Review them so you know what sorts of
business we are discussing and acting upon in Session.
Are you planning a special event at the church?
Perhaps a party or an event for a social service organization? We are
always happy to have our facility used. For any proposed event, we
make sure the date is available and then Session approves the event.
There may be a small fee depending on the amount of use and the
purpose. You can easily check our webpage to check our

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION...
12 Choices to fend off Burnout
By Vicki Davis (teacher and blogger)
*
Choice #1: Choose to Be Happy
First, happiness is a choice. Choose to be the first one to smile at everybody you meet. Choose to greet
others by name. Use happy triggers—those things that always bring you joy—to boost your mood when
you get upset.
*
Choice #2: Choose to Disconnect
We are making a dumb use of our smartphones. Instead of freeing us up to go anywhere anytime,
they've tethered us to a hamster wheel. Usually, I check email twice a day. I deleted my work email off
my smartphone after several evenings because of an angry email. (We all get them.) Unplug once a
week. Be a human being, not a human doing.
*
Choice #3: Choose to Be Mindful
Mindfulness is being called society’s next wonder drug. Some meditate or practice yoga -I pray every morning at 5:00 A.M. for at least 20 minutes. I find a sense of peace that centers me upon
what is important.
*
Choice #4: Choose to Make Time for Sleep
Sleep loss harms your thinking, your health, and your mood. Psychologist Norbert Schwarz says,
"Making $60,000 more in annual income has less of an effect on your daily happiness than getting one
extra hour of sleep a night." Realize that watching your favorite movie may not be restful when you're
exhausted. Go to sleep early with your cell phone in the kitchen where it can't wake you.
*
Choice #5: Choose to Get Outside and Get Moving
Boston University psychology professor Michael Otto says,
"Usually within five minutes after after moderate exercise, you get a mood-enhancement effect.
" Exercise is shown to be a powerful intervention for clinical depression, diabetes, and anxiety.
Even five minutes of green exercise (outdoors) is also shown to boost your mood.
So get outside and exercise.
*
Choice #6: Choose to Be Grateful
Research studies have shown that keeping a gratitude journal will "increase your long-term well-being
more than winning a million dollars in the lottery." I keep a joy journal by my desk and write in it every
day.
*
Choice #7: Choose What to Overlook
"The greatest remedy for anger is delay." - Seneca
Understand that you're working with others who are almost (if not more) burned out than you. Therefore,
count on everyone being fussy, cranky, and tired. Let it go. Studies show that patients who've had heart
attacks can improve their well-being by practicing forgiveness and working to be less angry. Sometimes
our biggest enemy is the perfect person we try to be. My kids will be happier eating a frozen lasagna
from a happy Mom than a home-cooked meal served by a witch.
*
Choice #8: Choose the Battles Worth Fighting
Choose to fight only for what matters.
*
Choice #9: Choose What to Do Next Time and What to Stop Doing
Arthur Gordon says to learn to say "next time" instead of "if only." Make the mistakes of your past a
signpost, not a hitching post. Remember your mistakes, but keep your eyes facing front toward your
current surroundings. There are times to say, "There will not be a next time. Enough." Some places
should be left. Some relationships should be severed. Some organizations should become part of your
past. Not all the time, but sometimes.
*
Choice #10: Choose to Enjoy the Relationships That Matter
Don’t be so busy making a living that you forget to make time for living. You have relationships and
hobbies. Keep them in your life.

On Friday night, April 24th, a total of
33 youth from UPC, St. Victor’s, the
United Methodist’s, and Grace
Lutheran gathered for a lock-in at
Grace Lutheran. We had a great time
getting to know one another, playing
lot’s of games, enjoying the middle
school gym, sharing in worship together, etc. It was so successful that
we hope to come together twice a
year. A big thank you to Tiffany
Emberson for all of her tireless
faithful work on behalf of our youth
and children.
We know it can be very exhausting!

Be a gardener.
Dig a ditch, toil and sweat, and turn the earth
upside down and seek the deepness and water the plants
in time. Continue this labor and make sweet floods to
run and noble and abundant fruits to spring.
Take this food and drink and carry it
to God as your true worship.

A NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH UW EXTENSION OF GREEN COUNTY
Our Session has entered into a partnership with the UW Extension of Green County!
The UW Extension’s “Eating Smart, Being Active” program will be using our kitchen
and fellowship hall for their classes.
The “Eating Smart, Being Active” program is led by Lisa Messer, a Nutrition
Educator who works for the Green County UW Extension. The program is a series
of 8 lessons offered to adults in our community seeking to learn how to obtain and
prepare healthier food options and how to be more physically active. The lessons
include ideas for quick, easy, healthy, and low-cost meals; opportunities to prepare and taste healthy
ecipes; fun ways for families to move more; and tips to save money on groceries.
Although the dates have not yet been confirmed, these classes will most likely be held on Tuesday mornings at 9am in June and July. We are very excited to enter into this relationship and become even more
involved in our community!
AN OFFER FROM THE VENTURE SCOUTS
“And They’ll Know We Are
Christians By Our Love…”
The Venture Crew 1812, who meet every other week in our
Fellowship Hall, have offered to provide help to members of
our congregation with various tasks around the house—
moving, raking, cleaning, etc. These young people want
to give back to the community and are very hard-working
(though most are only 15, so they’ll need some guidance
and some tasks will be better left to the professionals!).
If you have a task or two that you would like help with, please
contact Tamara Richardson—[email protected] She is the adult advisor to the Venture Crew 1812.
Although these young people are looking to give back, it might be nice to offer them payment for their
work as college is getting so expensive and these young people could surely use the financial
assistance.

MUSICAL UPDATES!
Sunday, May 3, at 3:00 p.m. at the
Monroe Arts Center, The Bel Canto Singers
will present their spring concert,
"The Roarin' 20's, A Musical Journey,"
directed by Allen Redford. The concert will also
feature a jazz combo. The Bel Canto Singers
rehearse here at Union, and several of our choir
members are part of the group.
We hope you join us!
We are happy to announce that we will soon be upgrading to a CD
recorder in worship! Our cassettes are getting worn out and it’s time to
embrace a better technology. So, CDs will be available for those folks
who can no longer make it to worship. The quality of the recording
should be much, much better. Our hope is to eventually begin videoing
our services and making DVD copies available, but we need to identify a
person who would like to serve as our videographer and sound person.
If that person is you, or if you have a suggestion, please let us know!
Frequently, when you drop by the church you’ll find music playing in both Lisa’s office and Jesse’s office.
What can we say—it just makes the day more joyful. Indeed, we are a congregation that appreciates
music. So, we thought we’d offer a few YouTube recommendations…
Lisa’s pick:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSJbYWPEaxw
Jesse’s pick:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh6dUlJ_xw4
Perhaps you’ll like at least one of these songs—maybe even both of them!

M EMBERSHIP AND C HURCH L IFE
THANK YOU to everyone who provided the delicious egg casseroles and all of the different rolls,
breads, milk, and juices for our Easter Breakfast. THANK YOU to all the committee members for making
this such a special event.
Our next event is an ICE CREAM SOCIAL that will be held during fellowship hour on May 17th,
In “RECOGNITION” of our members and friends who give so much to our church and community.
Be sure to join us immediately following worship.
Sunday, June 14th we are having worship at Northeast Park followed by a potluck. This will be
a very informal event; bring your own table service and a dish to pass, and the church will provide
brats, hot dogs, buns, and lemonade. Contact Nan Edmunds with any questions.
On Sunday, June 21st, Marilyn and Bill Ross have graciously invited us to have coffee hour
after worship in their beautiful garden. After worship, we’ll simply walk to their home and enjoy
fellowship and their many beautiful flowers and plants.
SUMMER FELLOWSHIP AND COFFEE HOUR
COFFEE HOUR IS HELD IN FELLOWSHIP HALL FOLLOWING MOST WORSHIP SERVICES.
We know that many folks will be traveling this summer and so we want to make sure that our coffee hour is
easily maintained through the summer months. So, we ask you to bring in any snacks at any time and place
them in the freezer in the kitchen. We are only wanting snacks that can be served on a napkin, so we won't
have any clean up! Collectively, all of us will be providing our refreshments over the Summer! Many providers
will create less that each of us would need to provide.
While the committee is pleased to serve the drinks, we will rely on the rest of us coming to church to provide
the "goodies." There will be NO SIGN UP SHEET. B RING WHAT YOU CAN WHEN YOU CAN .
Examples of types of refreshments: Coffee cakes, cookies, small muffins, fruit, cheese, vegetables, pretzels,
donut holes, etc. Remember that store bought is perfectly fine!
Amount to bring: Any amount is fine. A few dozen would be great! Just place in the kitchen freezer.
Whatever you provide for your fellow parishioners is very much appreciated. Thank you for your generosity!
In September, we will begin enjoying a meal
together at a local restaurant once a month
on the 3rd Sunday . This will be very informal;
no reservations required—if you want to join
us for a meal, do so. We will try different
restaurants and enjoy fellowship and good food
together.

YOU TOOK MY PARKING SPACE AT CHURCH
THIS SHOULD WAKE US UP…
ONE DAY A MAN WENT TO VISIT A CHURCH, HE GOT THERE EARLY, PARKED HIS CAR AND GOT OUT. ANOTHER CAR PULLED
UP NEAR THE DRIVER, GOT OUT AND SAID: "I ALWAYS PARK THERE ... Y OU TOOK MY PLACE " THE VISITOR WENT INSIDE
FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL, FOUND AN EMPTY SEAT AND SAT DOWN. A YOUNG LADY FROM THE CHURCH APPROACHED HIM AND
STATED, T HAT ’ S MY SEAT! YOU TOOK MY PLACE!
THE VISITOR WAS SOMEWHAT DISTRESSED BY THIS RUDE WELCOME,
BUT SAID NOTHING. AFTER SUNDAY SCHOOL, THE VISITOR WENT INTO THE SANCTUARY AND SAT DOWN. ANOTHER MEMBER
WALKED UP TO HIM AND SAID, T HAT , S WHERE I ALWAYS SIT ! Y OU TOOK MY PLACE !
THE VISITOR WAS EVEN MORE
TROUBLED BY THIS TREATMENT, BUT STILL HE SAID NOTHING. LATER AS THE CONGREGATION WAS PRAYING FOR CHRIST TO
DWELL AMONG THEM, THE VISITOR STOOD UP, AND HIS APPEARANCE BEGAN TO CHANGE. HORRIBLE SCARS BECAME VISIBLE ON
HIS HANDS, AND ON HIS SANDALED FEET. SOMEONE FROM THE CONGREGATION NOTICED HIM AND CALLED OUT!!!
W HAT HAPPENED TO YOU ? THE VISITOR REPLIED AS HIS HAT BECAME A CROWN OF THORNS,
AND A TEAR FELL FROM HIS EYE..... I TOOK YOUR PLACE.
WHEN YOU READ THIS, SAY A PRAYER.
MAYBE WE CAN GET THE WORLD TO START THINKING OF WHO TOOK OUR PLACE....
