“Gamification…. A Way to Enhance Engagement at Your Show” Buffy Levy, Events Director, SmithBucklin ([email protected]) June 3, 2015 gam·i·fi·ca·tion ˌɡāmifəәˈkāSHəәn/ noun the application of typical elements of game playing (e.g., point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity, typically as an online marketing technique to encourage engagement with a product or service. "gamification is exciting because it promises to make the hard stuff in life fun" Why Use Gamification? • • • Attractive to event organizers because it gets attendees to behave the way you want them to behave, see what you want them to see and take action where you want them to take action. A way to do make the games we are already doing (passport to prizes, scavenger hunts, etc) feel more innovative and exciting to attendees (and exhibitors). People like games because they aren’t just watching; they get to be part of something and get in on the action. How Do I Start? What’s the Process I Should Follow? • • • • • Determine your objectives! Don’t game to game – have a reason and a need for it. o Generate buzz, energy and vibrancy on the show floor and within the conference community overall o Promote a certain area on the show floor, perhaps one with a concern of less traffic o Encourage interaction between exhibitors and attendees o Encourage interaction between attendees and attendees o Enable meaningful networking and discussions o Help retention of educational content o Encourage attendees’ use social media activity around your event Work with your mobile app company to match the gaming functionality they offer that best meets your objectives. Don’t make the game too complicated – people won’t use it. Encourage folks to use it -‐-‐ participation is key! o Offer prizes o Use a leader board display winners o Display material on screens throughout the conference – top Tweets, top trends, most viewed exhibitor profile, highly rated session, post with most comments, etc. Measure your success and use the data to make improvements for next year. Reuse large banners – remove reference to the year, Association logo vs. Conference logo. Capitalize on existing convention center and hotel sustainability programs. ! ! ! ! Reduce or eliminate quantity of printed consumables on-site. Utilize mobile app provided by most show organizers that scans QR codes linking exhibitor’s information If you must print, use post‐consumer recycled paper with vegetable‐ and soy‐based inks on all printed materials. Choose food that is regional & local – domestic beer and wine ! ! Participate in donation programs to contribute left over building supplies, hands outs and food to local community groups such as schools, senior centers or Habitat for Humanity.
