Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 5, 2016 You changed my mourning into dancing; O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks. — Psalm 30:12, 13 Pastoral Region news… New Parochial Vicar Announced. On May 21st, at the Ordination Mass of the Priesthood, Archbishop announced that our pastoral region has been assigned Fr. Jason Williams. Fr. Williams, 34, spent six years in the Navy on a Nuclear Submarine before he entered his studies for the priesthood. Fr. Williams has many interests, including running, hiking, playing the organ, piano, violin, as well as woodworking. On behalf the parishes of the region we congratulate and welcome Fr. Williams to our Parishes. Fr. Jamie has also reported that Fr. Dave Sunberg will now be assisting in our pastoral region. Fr. Sunberg was the former pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes and recently was appointed spiritual director at the seminary. We welcome Fr. Sunberg to our parishes also. Needed: Plas c Grocery/Store Bags! You know all those plastic bags that you accumulate and don’t quite know what to do with except over whelm our landfill? Well, we have a ministry of crocheting sleeping mats for homeless folks here in Cincinnati. The mats provide a slight cushion to the hard ground as well as providing protection against dampness and dirt. But a 36” x 80” mat with a carrying strap takes about 700 bags to finish. Everyone can participate in this endeavor by bringing in your used bags: all sizes accepted. If you would like to learn how to make a mat, please contact Paula Voborsky, OFS. Adult Ministry events… Our next event is lunch at The School House Restaurant on June 9 from l-3 pm. Reservations are required. Transportation available. Please welcome Layla Marie Schnirring, daughter of Michael & Gina Schnirring who will be baptized today at our 9 am Mass. Welcome Michael and Gina who are new parishioners to our parish community. From Paula’s desk. . . Make sure you have your reservations for Fr. Dave and Fr. Paul’s farewell dinner in to the parish office by June 6. Tickets will not be sold at the door. June 19th at 11 is Fr. Dave’s final mass. The music ministry is pulling out all the stops. Be there for this gala event. Hospitality will follow. Fr. Paul’s last Mass will be June 26th. We all should have recovered from our wonderful Summer Celebration in time to get to the 11 am Mass to wish Fr. Paul a fond farewell. Speaking of the Summer Celebration, it looks really exciting this year. Plan to come and celebrate. The first part of the evening is family friendly. I look forward to seeing all of you there. Bring a stub from your Raffle tickets and get in free! Let’s Face the Facts and Tell the Truth about Abortion Abortion is not about "a woman making a decision about her own body". The child in the mother's womb is a separate, human being with its own heartbeat, DNA, blood type and finger prints. About 50% of the time; the child is not even the same gender! * The vast majority of abortions are done as a form of birth control because the baby is "inconvenient", "too expensive" or a "burden", Very few abortions have anything to do with the health of the mother and less than 1 % is performed as a result of rape or incest * "Leave it up to the woman to decide" totally destroys equality before the law, because it constitutes a complete removal of protection from the child, who is considered a "nonperson". It also ignores the coercion women frequently confront from boyfriends and abusive husbands. * Abortion has two victims---the baby and the mother. Many women who have abortions suffer both physically and mentally. Depression, anxiety, infection, sterility and even death are not uncommon. The incidence of breast cancer also increases significantly in women who have had an abortion. The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass for couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 4:30 pm at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral. Please let the parish office know if you will be celebrating 50 years of marriage. Couples celebrating their 25th or 50th wedding anniversary should call the parish office by June 15, 2016. If we took someone off that still needs our prayers or someone that needs to be added, please call the parish office. First Reading — Elijah revives the son of a widow (1 Kings 17:17-24). Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading — Paul explains God’s call to him to preach to the Gentiles (Galatians 1:11-19). Gospel — Jesus raises from the dead the son of a widow in the city of Nain (Luke 7:11-17). NEXT WEEK’S READINGS JUNE 12, 2016 First Reading — The LORD forgives David for taking the wife of Uriah, and for having Uriah killed (2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13). Psalm — Lord, forgive the wrong I have done (Psalm 32). Second Reading — If justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing (Galatians 2:16, 19-21). Gospel — Jesus forgives the woman because of her great love (Luke 7:36 — 8:3 [7:36-50]). HOPE AND LIFE Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News.
