AARP Driver Safety Training
The AARP (American Association of Retired Persons)
Driver Safety Course is a six-hour driving refresher.
Although anyone 18 years old with a valid NY State
driver’s license is welcome to attend, the class focuses
on the driving strategies and safety of those 50 years
old and better.
Taking the class has several benefits: first and most
important, your driving will improve because you refresh your driving awareness; you may reduce your
insurance rates up to 10%; and you may reduce up to
4 points assessed on your license due to prior DMV
penalties. If you are a Senior, you will learn strategies
to help you drive longer. If you have aging family or
friends you will learn how to help them to remain safe
on the road.
A class is scheduled for October 3, 2015 at the Tuscarora Town Hall, 1094 Gill Road (Freeman) from 8:30
AM to 3:30 PM. The fee for the class is $20 for AARP
members and $25 for non-AARP members.
Signing up for the class is necessary. Please call Sue
Dunn (instructor) at 607.359.2068 to register.
Addison Area Christmas Food Baskets
During this Christmas season many volunteers from our community will be working together to organize food
baskets for local families and individuals in need. Last year we served 200 families. Much of this project is
supported by donations of food and volunteer time, but monetary support is needed to make this a viable project.
The food baskets provide a complete meal at Christmas time. Each basket usually includes, milk, eggs, butter,
cheese, bread, potatoes, a turkey or ham, and other items to complete a nice meal. Other non-perishable
goods such as pasta, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, jelly, soup, canned fruit, vegetables, and cereal are
also often included.
Many of the non-perishable goods are donated through local food drives. Community members, churches,
organizations, businesses, and volunteers also donate other significant items such as boxes, storage, and
space for the event.
While many of the food items, time and other expenses are donated, the perishable items are purchased. We
also purchase most of the non-perishable items needed to complete each basket in order to be able to serve
all those who depend on this effort. We hope you will consider supporting this annual community event by
contributing to local canned food drives, volunteering or through a monetary donation. Any and all contributions are always greatly appreciated. Thank you.
If you are interested in supporting this please send monetary donations to:

Woodhull Senior Citizens
Woodhull Senior Citizens took 2 trips this summer
and they were very enjoyable by all. We took a trip
to Alexandria Bay and took a 2 hour boat ride, plus
got to tour Bolt Castle after our delicious meal there.
Our second trip was to New York State Country
Music Hall of Fame at Cortland Country Music
Park & Campground. We toured the Museum and
then went to The Opry Barn there, for some good
Country Music and dancing followed by a delicious
Ham Dinner and A Tribute to Charley Pride impersonator. A fun day for all and we enjoy our trips we
get to take every year.
We want to send out an acknowledgement to the
towns of Cameron, Troupsburg, Tuscarora and
Woodhull for the financial support we get from them,
and to Pat Herrington, for the awesome job she
does as our trip coordinator. We truly appreciate
everything that is done, to make these trips possible
for our group. We appreciate everybody that works
so hard to make this all possible.

Tuscarora & Valley Schools….
I would like to take an opportunity to welcome each of you to the 2015-16 school year. We have had many renovations and upgrades at our school buildings. I can’t wait for each family/community member to see the changes. Ask
your Knight about some of the changes they have noticed.
Goals for this year include my commitment to each student, their family and our community. Please look for my
weekly newsletter that comes home with your child as well as our monthly calendar of events. I encourage each of
you to become involved in your school community. We have many opportunities for you to be a part of your child’s
early and elementary years in school. Some ways you can be involved include:
• The Jennie Mose Family Resource Center
• The PTA/PTO’s at each building
• Ice Cream Social/Membership Drive
• Valley Frog Jumping
• Grandparent/Parent Luncheon Week
• Title I Parent Information Night
• Meet & Greets
• Art Fair - “Stroll the Halls & See the Walls”
• Open House/Orientations
• Hands-On Math/Science Fairs
• Dinosaur Museum
• Monthly Valley Family Events
Just to name a few.
We model and teach character traits in our schools beginning with our youngest Knights. We follow the “Knight’s
Honor Code” that aligns with our Positive Behavior al Inter vention Suppor t (PBIS) bee’s.
“Be Respectful
, Be Responsible
, Be Safe
, Be Kind
, Be Honest
, and Be Healthy
.
We use the term, KHFOOTY (Keep Hands, Feet, Other Objects to Yourself). This aligns with our instructional practices
through a variety of events and assemblies encompassing a
positive belief system, citizenship and a strong work ethic. Our
students learn the PRIDE of being a Knight from the moment
they enter our school.
We are committed to a strong foundation for our youngest
Knights Pre K – fifth grade. Our preschool children have an
opportunity to attend school full day in an appropriate social,
developmental and educational setting. Our youngest Knights
then transition to the elementary years, where we encourage
thinking, acting, performing and learning to their fullest potential. Students are engaged at all levels, using 21st Century
learning strategies to promote their educational experience. Expectations are high, full of rigorous, relevant instruction in order for each student to advance on the trajectory of career and
college readiness.
ABOVE: Madelyn Hoad, Dwayne Meade, Caidyn Jones, Ava
Knowles, Sarah Lyons, Kerrigan Driskell, Kobe Watson, Marshall
Brewer, and Calab Abbott remind our students to use KHFOOTY.
At Valley Early Childhood School the vision is:
We Value All Lifelong Learners in their Early Years
At Tuscarora Elementary School the vision is:
We are committed to the lifelong success of every child
Together we can build a strong school community. Please feel free to check out our website at:
www.addisoncsd.org and get involved in our schools.

Dear Addison Community: The information below is meant
to give everyone in the District a brief overview and update of the
various “new” locations and availability of those locations as the
school year opens up in a few weeks. A key component of this
information is the availability of certain fields. Although many, if
not all, of these new fields look like they are “ready” for use, in
fact they are not. They need two to three growing seasons and
must have no play or foot traffic on them. The District is respectfully asking everyone to avoid getting on these fields until the appropriate time.
Thank you in advance for your full understanding and cooperation!

Merritt Russell “Russ” Price Jr., 77, of Cty. Rte. 129, Woodhull, formerly of Jasper, died very suddenly
on Sunday, September 13, 2015 in Greenwood, NY as the result of an auto
accident.
Born in New Berlin, NY on Nov. 1, 1937, he was the son of the late Merritt
Russell and Mattie L. (Murphy) Price. Russ attended Jasper Central School
where he graduated in 1954. Following high school he attended Rochester
Business Institute.
On April 15, 1961, Russ and the former Deanna R. Thomas were married

Upon retirement from farming, Russ and Deanna moved to Woodhull. Russ
spent much of his life involved in sports, either playing, coaching or attending
his children’s and grandchildren’s athletic events. His love of sports, though,
paled in comparison to the love he had for his family and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Deanna Price at home, his children and their spouses, Merritt & Julie
Price of Salisbury, MD, Laurie and David Black of Charlotte, NC, Thomas and Britt Price of Jasper, Marita

September Troupsburg Board
Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 7PM followed
by the Pledge to the Flag. As there was no public
input the Board moved to the Consideration
of the August Minutes. After some corrections
the minutes were approved as amended and
Supervisor Newberry read the Communications
from outside sources.
Following the Communications the Board moved
on to the Official’s Reports. Supervisor Newberry
presented the Board with the monthly operating
statement, the Water & Sewer reports, the monthly
phone bill charges, the monthly Dep’t. electric,
fuel & other usages charting, the bank statements
and any issues concerning these and other
expenses as needed. Highway Superintendent
Ron Button presented his reports to the Board
concerning highway repairs, any equipment issues
or other matters and he also gave the Water and
Sewer reports. The Clerk, Justice and the Code
Enforcement Officer reports followed these.
Under Old Business the Troups Creek repair
work was discussed. New business concerned
water shut-offs, how billing is handled, a slight
modification to the form residents of the Water
District must fill out before turn-ons or shut-offs
can occur, and a discussion on extending the water
district beyond it’s current limits. The contract
between the Elementary School and the Town
was approved to maintain the Verdin clocks in
their respective places (Memorial Park and the
school) with considerable savings to the Town.
Budget work has started and a special meeting will
be held in the near future to try to comply with the
State’s new Budget Tax Cap set at 0.73% instead
of the 2.0%. The near impossibility of meeting this
unrealistic number presents a daunting task for the
Board to meet.
Next came Budget modifications and resolutions
allowing these to occur followed by a motion to pay
the bills, the audit of vouchers and the meeting
adjourned at approximately 8:20PM.
Supervisor David “Jay” Newberry

Dear Editor,
It is with sadness that we write this letter, we had purchased the property at 145 Front Street with all
intensions of restoring the former Cowley Hill Farm house. However after looking though the house, its
deteriorated condition, getting estimates to partially restore and completely restore this old house that
hasn’t had any renovation since 1944, we have decided that it would never be worth the investment
needed for where it is located. Please understand it is not cheap, the investment required is hundreds
of thousands of dollars. We have decided that bringing a grocery store and small shopping plaza
would better suit the needs for Addison. We are offering the house, free of charge, to anyone that can
move or completely tear it down and remove it. Anyone wanting to rebuild the house in Addison or the
surrounding area will be given 1st choice. We realize people have been passing the house for many
years, it is a fixture, but we also realize that it is now a commercial area, completely surrounded by
business in all directions, and with the 10,000 cars a day passing by the front yard, it doesn’t make a
desirable location for a house. We hope that you understand we do love the old house, but we also
feel that it will not do this house any justice to be restored at its current location.
Anyone interested in the house please contact Brian @ 607-359-3363.
In closing we would like everyone to know we have tried many avenues to find resolve for this house,
including offering it to the Addison Historical Society, the person we spoke to at the historical society
knew the house very well, said they could not afford it, we further explained that we were going to
donate the house to the historical society, and again it was reiterated that the historical society could
not afford to fix it up or maintain it even if it was donated to them. If anyone has solutuions to offer,
I will ask you to come see me in person, not hide behind a computer or address this thru the media.
We want this house to be a home again, we don’t want to see it fall down around itself any longer.
Brian & Lisa Crane

(9/13/15) 2 Kings
2:9-14 & 1 Kings 19:1920; To expound upon
Elisha and Elijah, we
go a little further. When
Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s
spirit, Elijah said, “You
have asked a difficult
thing.” Two points here
are (1): The greatest
pain brings the greatest power. When Elijah was taken up the
bottom dropped out of
Elisha’s world. He cried
in despair and tore his
clothes. Asking God to
use you and then doing it go hand in hand.
There was a professor
who once said when
his bottom dropped out
that he was better, not
bitter. Elisha went on
to do much more that
Elijah. (2): The call of
a lifetime to serve God
came to Elisha while
he was planting in a
field. Elijah tossed his
cloak at Elisha and kept
walking. Elisha ran
after him. The person
that God wants us to be
interested in is sometimes going past. The
question for us is will we
run after that person?
How many times does
an opportunity come
our way and we don’t
run after it? We see
a downtrodden person
on the street and we
walk by. We see tears
in someone’s eye and
we don’t stop to help.
Will you be like Elisha
and run to help or walk
by? Don’t wait for a
call of the Lord to knock
and ask. We need to
watch for the opportunity and then run after
it. By doing this you
will be serving God.
Our services are in the
Baptist Church at 9:30m
and we welcome you to
worship with us Sunday
morning.

The Inspired Word of God
There is so much written in the Bible about all the different situations and emotions that mankind encounters
each day. The Bible is, and will always be, the best way for us to learn about living a happy and virtuous life, and
receiving salvation in order to spend eternity with our God in Heaven. The Bible has a multitude of different topics
that are just as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. It tells us about love, faith, hope, forgiveness,
mercy, pride and almost any other topic you can think of. Not only does the Bible give hope and comfort to the world,
it also is the Good News of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. God wants His people to be happy in this world and
to be a shining example of His great love. True and lasting happiness is not determined by one’s possessions or
status in life, but by the relationship and love that they have with our Heavenly Father. The Bible tells us that the
joy of the Lord is our strength, and to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer.
Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. R.S.V. Psalm 119:105

Addison’s Businesses, Institutions, and Buildings
Addison’s First Church Buildings
Presbyterian: Part I
HURRY - TIME IS RUNNING OUT!
General knowledge indicates that the Presbyterian Church was founded in 1832,
forty-one years after the founding of the settlement of Addison (Middletown until 1808)
by Samuel B. Rice. According to reports the first years were wild, when loggers, raftsmen, and lumbermen were the predominate segment of Addison’s society. Many of
these individuals were transients, following the work wherever it led, harvesting the
white and yellow pine, hemlock, and virgin growth hard wood forests of the area.; and
then moving on. Visits from itinerant clergy were few and far between.
By 1832, Addison had become more settled with many businessmen and their families forming the core of a more cultured society. These men had come from older cities
where the rites of religious services formed a large part of their lives. The missed the
structure and guidance of routine religious practice on the frontier. They wanted their
children to grow up disciplined and useful to them selves and their fellow citizens In
September of 1832, five men from the settlement of Addison rode to Bath, New York,
, where a Presbyterian Society was already established, and received a charter. The
Rev. A. Donaldson and the Rev. E, D. Wills helped with rhe organization.
Interestingly, a few days earlier on September 3rd. 1832, a dozen people met at the
little red schoolhouse on Goodhue Street, and organized the First Methodist Church.
Rev. Thomas Wheat and Henry Wombough were chosen as co-chairmen of that
meeting. Among the group were a few Presbyterians
who, not to be out done by the Methodists, organized the First Preasbyterian Church
in Addison later in September. The reason that the Presbyterians are given credit for
being the first church organized in Addison is because the previous First Methodist
Church, formed in 1827, and its congregation moved to an Orr Hill location, technically,
outside of the settlement of Addison.
Original members of the First Presbyterian Church of Addison were: Porter and Mary
Ellen Phelps; Elihu and Eliza Anne Whittenhall; William Hoyt; John Shumway; Mrs. Mary
Scofield. There is some evidence that Lemuel and Harriet Searles were. also, part of
that original groupl. Meetings from 1832 to 1837 were held in the “little red” or Curtis
School house at the corner of Goodhue and Front. In 1837-1838, a “tabernacle” was
constructed by the Presbyterians and Methodists on the north east corner of what is
today Wombough Park and directly across from today’s (2015) Presbyterian Church.
No regular services were held until 1835, when the Rev. D. B. Butts of Erwin Center preached in the school house and “tabernacle” on a monthly basis. Prior to this ,
1832-1835, services were held when a minister “rode” through on his “circuit.” (Corning
Journal, May 18,1882). By 1839, The Presbyterian Society had twenty-three members.
Porter Phelps and wife Mary Ellen moved from Addison in May 1835. Elihu and Eliza
Anne Whittenhall moved from Addison in 1843 to Kansas Territory. John P. Shumway
moved to Minnesota in 1844. Shumway and newcomer Joel D. Gillett, who joined
the congregation in 1836, were elected elders in 1836. William Tarbell and William
MacDowell were elected in 1840. Col. Tarbell, later, moved to Pennsylvania. William
MacDowell moved to Westfield, Pennsylvania circa 1845-1846 and died there in 1875.
Dr. Bradley Blakeslee was elected an elder in 1845. E. Van Tuyl was elected in 1857.
Calvin Cowley was elected in April 1862 and died in 1876. Seth Mullen served as
elder from 1857 to 1862. In 1872, David B. Winton and Martin Wilbur were elected.
In October of 1835, a young man from Colchester, Connecticut settled in Addison,
being drawn by the lumber and timber business, and became a member of the Presbyterian Church. His name was Joel D. Gillet. No other person in the early history of
the Addison Presbyterian Church has influenced that denomination, or in fact, the early
history of Addison with the exception of William Wombough, so intensely.

Hunger Action Month
What is food insecurity and what does it look like in our community?
Food insecurity refers to a lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy
life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally
adequate foods.
Food insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time, food
insecurity may reflect a household’s need to make trade-offs between important
basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.
You may not worry about buying enough nutritional foods for your family but your
neighbor might. The child sitting next to your child in school might be distracted
because they don’t have access to healthy foods. These things affect everyone.
Let’s look out for our neighbors, our friends, our family members.
Throw a few extra things in your grocery cart this month for the Addison Community
Food Pantry food drive. Thank you!
