GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy
County announced recently that it
has been awarded a grant from CVS
Pharmacy to install a drug collection
unit at the Grundy County Sheriff’s
office. The unit will provide residents with a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of
unwanted, unused or expired medication, including controlled substances.
According to Grundy County
Sheriff’s Deputy Zach Tripp, the
new unit is intended to reduce the
amount of unneeded medicine in
residents’ homes and decrease prescription drug abuse, which has
soared in recent years, especially
among teenagers. More than 70 percent of teenagers say it is easy to get
prescription drugs from their parents’ medicine cabinets, according
to a 2014 Partnership for Drug-Free
Kids study.
The new unit will also help Grundy County prevent the contamination of local landfills and water supplies from unused medication.
Tripp said safely disposing of
unused medication is critical to protecting our children and our environment
“Grundy County is proud to partner with CVS/pharmacy and we
thank them for their commitment to
help residents reduce the amount of
unneeded medicine in our community,” he said.
The new Drug Collection Unit
represents one of 1,000 Units CVS/
pharmacy and The Medicine Abuse
Project (MAP), a five-year initiative
of The Partnership for Drug-Free
Kids, are providing across the country. This innovative donation program is the largest retail pharmacy
effort of its kind to date and supports
MAP’s goal to prevent a half million
teenagers from abusing prescription
medication by the year 2017.
Grundy County’s new Drug Collection Unit site is open to the public 24 hours per day, seven days per
week. Drugs can be dropped off with
no questions asked. Grundy County
residents and CVS/pharmacy customers can also inquire about the
Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program at the toll free
phone number 1-866-559-8830 or

GRUNDY CENTER — Phil
Dicks, pastor at the Grundy Center United Methodist Church had a
challenge.
At the Annual Conference earlier this year, Bishop Julius C. Trimble, who oversees the Iowa Area
of the United Methodist Church,
asked Dicks and other area ministers to launch a creative program
for Iowa children called “Change
a Child’s Story.” The program
outlined by Trimble was for local
churches to give time to read to
children and give them books to
read.
“This is something that we all
can be a part of — changing a
child’s life by helping a child to
be able to read,” Trimble wrote.
“It’s not about politics. It’s about
a passion for children and closing
the gap between those who are in
poverty and those who succeed in
the educational journey of life.”
Seeking a local angle, Dicks met
with Bobbi Jo Paige, the church’s
lay delegate to the Conference,
about creating a small lending library that could make books available to children year-round.
“A great example of this was
from (church member) Denny Dolmage who several years ago created a small lending library outside
of his house that allowed children
or adults to take a book or leave a
book and make it a hub for sharing
books for people to read,” Dicks
said. “It met with great success.
The thought was to create a model
of such a mini-lending library for
our community ... located at our
church and available 24/7. Simple.”
Dolmage designed the library
based on the look of a typical Iowa
church. He used a picture of the
former United Methodist Church in
Morrison as a guide and included
elements of the first Grundy Center
UMC building.
“He then actually built the model church complete with stained
glass windows,” Dicks said.
The local pastor said there is
a major difference between the
Lending Library and the public li-
brary located next door.
“The difference of this plan ... is
that children can keep these books
or bring books from home to gift
out (or lend) to other kids,” he said.
“It is a great plan of recycling of
good books without the accountability for returning. It is all based
on, 1) take a book, 2) bring a book
to share or 3) take a book and leave
a book. Simple. Free library and
encourages reading.”
The new lending library has
been placed on the south side of the
church near the entrance to its main
parking lot.
GRUNDY CENTER — The
Grundy Center Main Street Committee is seeking one and all to be
part of a photo that will be part
of the group’s presentation to the
Main Street Iowa Board of Directors, which determines which cities
receive Main Street Iowa status and
potential funding.
At 5:30 p.m. Friday, just after
the Felix Grundy Festival parade,
Main Street Committee members
are asking everyone to stick around
for the photo, which will be shot in
front of the Center Theatre.
If Grundy Center is selected as
a Main Street community, it will
lead to access to consultant services
provided by the Iowa Department
of Economic Development’s Main
Street Program that will help sustain and grow Grundy Center’s
main business corridor. The designation could help restore buildings
and attract new businesses, shoppers and visitors the the community.
The photo will be taken from
overhead by photographers in
bucket trucks. It will take about 15
minutes.
Dennis Dolmage designed the Methodist Church’s new Lending Library to look like a traditional Iowa church.
It is similar to one he put at his own home a couple of years ago. The library will be located on the south side
of the church near the parking lot. (Courtesy photo)

Grundy Center Community School
District named finalist for America’s
Farmers Grow Rural Education grant
ST.LOUIS — Grundy Center Community School District has been
announced as a finalist in this year’s America’s Farmers Grow Rural
Education program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. Grundy Center
Community School District is among the top districts in Iowa in the running
for grants of $10,000 and $25,000.
Earlier this year, farmers nominated their local public school districts to
apply for Grow Rural Education grants. Once nominated, school districts
were eligible to complete applications requesting funding for a specific
math or science project that will enhance curriculum in their district. This
year’s applications were again very competitive. A panel of math and
science educators evaluated all of the applications and selected the strongest
submissions as finalists.
“Making it to this stage of the process is a great accomplishment that
requires a lot time and effort,” said Michelle Insco, Monsanto Fund program
officer. “There is still more to do before we announce our winning school
districts, but this year’s finalists submitted impressive applications. The
Monsanto Fund is grateful for their focus on improving math and science
opportunities for their students.”
Next, finalist applications will be reviewed by the Grow Rural Education
Farmer Advisory Council. The Advisory Council, made up of farmers from
across the U.S., will select this year’s winners, who will be announced in
early August.
Last year, Grow Rural Education invested $140,000 in public school
districts across Iowa to improve math and science curriculum. Since 2012,
Iowa school districts have received $470,000 through the program.
Projects funded over the last four years have helped school districts across
the U.S. upgrade technology and scientific lab equipment, build greenhouses
and outdoor classroom learning environments, update teacher and curriculum
development and other math and science related initiatives.

From The
Cheap Seats
I’ve been really fortunate through my life to see a lot of our great nation.
With family in New England and Florida, having lived in both the Great
Lakes region and the rural Midwest
plus the opportunity to visit places like
Hawaii and Colorado, I’ve seen more
of the country than most 45-year-olds.
Over the weekend I had a chance
to see another part of the country
that I had heard a lot about from
several friends in the past, northern
Minnesota.
Over the past few years I have
made a point of taking a long weekend
or two during the summer to visit
someplace that I have either enjoyed
in the past or that I have wanted to
see. Two years ago that was a place
in Illinois that I have enjoyed in the
past and last year it was a similar

place in Ohio. With the significant and
unexpected changes in my personal life this year, the trips have become more
fun and meaningful.
One of the things I learned quickly about Lynnette was that her favorite
place in the world was her parents’ cabin in northern Minnesota. As she
described it I could tell it was as close to Heaven for her that she’ll ever get
on earth. As I listened to her I knew this was a place that, if things worked
out, I would like to visit someday.
Someday proved to be over the long holiday weekend. I had pointed to
this weekend as a possible time to visit, simply because I knew it was a time
when Lynnette was always there and that the holiday fell at a time that was
somewhat convenient to be gone from work. It was a trip that I knew I would
be making for awhile and one that I was looking forward to just as much as
the ones I took to Chicago and Washington, D.C. in June.
Their cabin seems to be about the right distance from home. It’s far
enough away that it felt like I was on vacation yet close enough that I could
drive up early in the morning and still have most of the day to enjoy.
On the way up, seemingly just past Minneapolis, I saw the topography
change from the corn and soybean fields that are so familiar to us in Iowa to a
landscape that reminded me a lot of the area we lived in Michigan when I was
a little boy. Gone were the rolling hills and endless waves of grain; in their
place was a much flatter landscape featuring many of Minnesota’s 10,000
lakes often separated by lush forests of tall pine trees. An added bonus for
me was that the highway I took paralleled the former Northern Pacific (now
B.N.S.F.) Railroad main line.
As I negotiated my way to a place tucked away enough that you would
have to know where you were going to find it, I was greeted by Lynnette and
her mom ... and was so interested in what I was seeing for the first time that I
said hello and then drove on without bothering to pick them up. I was nearly
a block away before I realized what I had done ... heck of a nice guy I am!
What I found at their home was a large but peaceful lake that has enough
size to be a popular place for water skiers yet one that has enough nooks
and crannies that fishing is also a popular activity. Bird watching is popular
among local residents, with bald eagles, blue herons, loons, ospreys,
Baltimore orioles, hummingbirds, goldfinches all among birds I saw during
my few-day visit.
A highlight for me was seeing the origin of the Mississippi River, which is
located in Itasca State Park a few miles from where Lynnette’s parents’ cabin
is located. As you may have heard, the river starts about the same width as
our Black Hawk Creek. It’s hard to fathom that until you have seen it with
your own eyes. I stand a touch taller than 5-foot-7 and am sure I could have
touched both banks of the river had I lay across it.
The Fourth of July is a big deal in the town nearest where their home is,
and part of the celebration is a parade of boats along the banks of the lake.
Thirty boats, maybe more, were decorated in red, white and blue with most

people aboard waving flags. It was unlike anything I’d seen before.
A big part of this trip was meeting members of Lynnette’s family, many
of whom I had heard about but never met. Her brother, who had flown in
from California only a couple of days before my arrival, greeted me with a
great homemade smoothie made from a variety of fruits and vegetables. Any
time you meet people for the first time, particularly when they are friends or
family of somebody you have feelings for, it can be daunting. I’ve been doing
that a lot the past few weeks and by the end of my third day in Minnesota I
was pretty overwhelmed. Everybody was extremely nice and conversation
was easy, but I confess that by the time I left I was ready to see people I know
a little better.
The only bad part of this trip was coming home. I get very emotional at
goodbye time, to the point where I usually leave in the middle of the night
so that nobody sees my tears. That wasn’t an option Sunday, as I wanted to
attend church with the family before leaving. Let’s just say it went just as I
feared it might ... As I prepared to pull out from the church I noticed someone
standing behind the car staring. It turns out that Grundy Center kindergarten
teacher Abby Hendershot is the lady’s granddaughter and that she recognized

With Felix Grundy Festival weekend upon us, be sure to get out in support
of Grundy Center’s largest community event.
This will be my sixth Felix Grundy Fest and it has come to be a weekend
that I look forward to. From my work with the paper (mainly photos) to the
volunteer stuff I do all weekend with Lions and Dollars for Scholars, I stay
hopping. This year I am also helping with the spelling bee. These events are
fun for me, as they get me out into the community to see people. For the most
part I have the whole weekend down to a science of where I need to be when.
This year I want to point out a new event that our Grundy Center Lions
Club is doing, as we’ll be screening for KidSight. If you have children
or grandchildren under the age of 5, bring them to the Grundy County
Courthouse between 2 and 3:30 p.m. and club members will take a picture
of their eyes with our special camera. The picture is then transmitted to Iowa
City, where they will be reviewed by an expert. If issues are found, you will
be contacted with information about the need for a formal vision screening
by an optometrist.
The Lions will also be out during the Operation Threshold Family Fair
from 11 to 1 p.m., promoting areas that we support. This would also be a
great time to enquire about becoming a member of the Grundy Center Lions
Club. Lions are the world’s largest civic organization. Be sure to bring the
children out to meet our friendly Lions mascot as well.
I would also like to invite you to the annual Dollars for Scholars Breakfast
and All-School Reunion from 7:30 to 10 a.m. This is our only major fund
raiser. All of the money after expenses goes to scholarships for Grundy
Center High School’s graduating seniors.
To The Editor,
As the community of Grundy
Center looks forward to its annual
celebration this weekend, there is
potential for another celebratory occasion in our near future. A dedicated committee of volunteers has
spent the last 18 months preparing
an application for the Main Street
Iowa Board of Directors with the
goal of being chosen as one of its
communities. If Grundy Center were
to be selected, it would mean access
to a variety of consultant services
provided by the Iowa Department
of Economic Development’s Main
Street Program to sustain and grow
Grundy Center’s Main Street. This
designation has the potential to help
us restore our buildings, attract new
businesses and more shoppers and
visitors to Grundy Center.
The recent support from building and business owners has been
outstanding and now we are seeking
your support. You can have a part in
this historic opportunity by joining
your friends, family, neighbors for
an All-Community photo on Saturday, July 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the
Center Theater following the Grand
parade.
Our goal is for the Main Street
selection committee to see and feel
how Grundy Center can come together in support of their businesses
and community as hundreds of residents line up in front of the Center
Theater. This video will play an important role in the Main Street Committee’s presentation in August.
It is just 15 minutes of your time
and it will have a huge impact on
the success of the application and
Grundy Center’s future. See you at
the Theater -- There will be a large
boom truck with camera awaiting
us!

Day full of agriculture planned
for Grundy County Fair
Soil health and cover crop workshops are coming to the Grundy
County Fair this year on Wednesday,
July 22, 2015! The day starts at 7:30
a.m. with the Tri County Ag meeting. Eat a hot breakfast and hear
the grain market update from ISU
Extension Farm Management Specialist, Steve Johnson, and IPTV’s
“Market to Market” host Mike Pearson, then hear from Steve about his
take on the crop lease outlook for
2015-16. At 9:00 a.m. Secretary of
Agriculture Bill Northey will kick
off the soil health workshops. You’ll
learn from experts about cover crops
and livestock usage; herbicide considerations; aerial seeding; new
overseeding machinery for ground
application; cover crop seed selection; and how cover crops can fit
best with seed corn, and with corn
and soybean production.
Other
speakers include Fred Abels, Grundy County Farmer and SWCD Commissioner, Jamie Benning, Iowa
State University, and several farmer
experts regarding using cover crops
for seed corn, conventional corn and
soybeans and livestock usage. End
the event with a hearty lunch and get
ready to make your fall cover crop
decisions.
Another exciting addition to
the day will be the chance to walk
through and participate with the
Iowa Conservation Station from
Iowa Learning Farms!
RSVP for the noon meal to Lauren Zastrow, [email protected] or (515) 232-5661 by Friday

4-H and youth summer assistant
hired at Grundy County Extension
Grundy County Extension &
Outreach is excited to announce
the hiring of our 2015 4-H & Youth
Summer Assistant, Chelsea Martens.
Some residents may have gotten to
know Chelsea in our office as she
was our school to work intern this
past spring as well!
Martens is from Toledo and grew
up at the Tama County Fair in 4-H.
She holds an Associate’s Degree
from Marshalltown Community
College in Elementary Education.
This May she graduated from UNI
with a Bachelor’s Degree in Leisure
Youth and Human Services. While
working toward her degrees Chelsea focused on outdoor recreation
including canoeing, backpacking,
trends and issues in the outdoors
classes and much more!
Martens says, “I am extremely
thrilled to be continuing my time
at the Grundy County Extension &
Outreach office as the summer assistant and look forward to meeting
even more 4-H families from Grundy County! If you haven’t met me
yet, please stop by and do so!”
Center Theatre’s Reel-to-Reel

John Cusack and Elizabeth Banks.
This movie is rated PG-13 for language, running approximately 120
minutes in length. Held-over at 7:30
is the #1 movie in the nation, Jurassic World 2D, starring Chris Pine.
This movie is rated PG-13 for violence, running approximately 120
minutes in length. There will be no
weekend matinees this week.
*FRIDAYS ARE 50 cent Fridays
at the Center Theatre! attend a movie on Friday evening and receive
your choice of MEDIUM popcorn
or any drink for just 50 cents!*
Love and Mercy presents an
unconventional portrait of Brian
Wilson, the mercurial, songwriter
and leader of The Beach Boys. Set
against the era-defining catalog of
Wilson’s music, the film intimately
examines the personal voyage and
ultimate salvation of the icon whose
success came at extraordinary personal cost. Brian Wilson (John Cusack), the leader of the Beach Boys,
wrote more than 15 top 40 hit singles
including the ground breaking 1966
“Pet Sounds” album before suffering a nervous breakdown during
the making of its follow-up album
“Smile.” He struggles with mental
illness, but Brian manages to persevere as an artist with the love and
support of his wife Melinda.
Due to great audience response,
the Center Theatre will continue to
hold Jurassic World, but this week
it will be shown in 2D only. In the
new film, 22 years after the events
of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now
features a dinosaur adventure park,
Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. This new
park is owned by the Patel Corporation. Owen (Chris Pratt), a member
of Jurassic World's on-site staff,
conducts behavioral research on the
Velociraptors. Jurassic World's attendance rates begin to decline and
a new attraction, created to re-spark
visitor interest, backfires. When the
massive and mysterious Indominus
rex stages an escape and disappears
into the jungle, order turns to mayhem and guests turn into prey. Dinosaurs escape into the open, skies
and water to engage in an all-out war
for survival and no corner within the
world's greatest theme park is safe
anymore. Don’t miss the fun and excitement of the reigning #1 movie in
the country, Jurassic World 2D, this
week at the Center Theatre!

Grundy County Conservation
Director
On Saturday, June 20, Grundy
County Lake was the place to be for
the annual Fishing Derby.
Again this year, Peoples Savings Bank contributed to success by
sponsoring along with the help from
Scheels, All Sports, and Blain’s
Farm & Fleet.
Twenty-seven people of all ages
registered for the event. Their five
dollars didn’t guarantee them catching a fish but they were guaranteed a
door prize!
And as it has been for most fishing derby dates, this one again included rain. The day started out nice
at 6 a.m. but radar showed a storm
moving in from the West. And sure
enough, the ominus clouds that began to gather produced a downpour
but for a relatively short amount of
time. Shortly, folks were back out
wetting their lines again. The second
round of rain saw some of the people
in boats already plenty wet so many
of them just stayed out and weathered the storm.
As you might expect, it is hard to
dampen the spirits of a fisherperson
when they are doing what they like
best. Whether you were fishing from
a boat or the shore, it was an enjoyable time. Most were registered in
the event. Some were just out chasing the elusive big one and enjoying
the day.
At the 1 PM close of the derby,
the following anglers won their respective largest fish categories: Bass
– Dan Schipper, Catfish – Rafael
Morales, Panfish – Kevin Johnson.
Rafael Morales won the catfish
category with a respectable 4.60
pounds. Rafael is a very well-known
face at Grundy County Lake logging
countless hours with a line in the water. Dan’s bass weighed 1.71 pounds.
Kevin Johnson’s panfish won with a
weight of .70 pounds. Kevin is no
stranger to the fishing derby winner’s circle having won largest bass
and largest catfish in previous years’
events. This year, it completed Kevin’s attempt to win his own “triple
crown”.
Each of the winners received an
impressive fishing gear package tailored to their fish category which included rod, reel and other gear. Everyone went away with a door prize
and good memories. That’s what the
fishing derby is all about.
Went to the baseball game last night and the crowd was behind the team
all the way to the exciting finish. DNH wins over AGWSR. The bleachers
were full and this part of the fan club is behind home plate. Love these
fans!!
Baseball games
If you have been staying at home
when the DNH Wolverines have
been playing baseball you are missing a lot of fun. These boys are playing their hearts out and the fans are
showing up in force.
Games have been played July 6
and 7 in Dike and on Friday, July 10
you can catch DNH playing another
game at home against Union.
Tournament time starst for baseball on July 14 at Parkersburg starting at 7 pm. A win will allow us to
play again on the 18th.
Pitch fast and straight hit hard
and long and have fun. The fans are
behind you all the way. Go Blue.
Softball
tournament time
The DNH softball team played
July 8 at Denver and with a win they
will play again at Conrad on Friday.
Keep the games going and play to
win and have fun.
Fans love to watch and are behind you all the way. Good luck.

Project update
Everything is still on target to
start construction on the ball diamonds on Monday, July 6
We had two very exciting partners join us this week.
Ubben Building Supplies will
be providing any supplies/materials
needed for the project at cost. We
really appreciate their generosity
and know this will streamline the efficiency of the building process.
Central Iowa Water Association
also stepped up and will provide
all the materials, supplies and labor
needed to get water to/from the site
for complex needs. This is a huge
value to us and we greatly appreciate
this organization's positive response
to our complex needs.

best shot with an open division and a

get signed up by calling Robert Biersner at 319-989-2170.
Keeping up with the Jones
The Jones have found a way to make sure all ten kids have their own
seat when it comes to travel. Bill and Pam and the kids needed a new
way to transport the entire family without the pile up method. They
are now enjoying the new ride. A Ford 2015, 15 passenger Transit Van.
Everyone is happy, the kids have assigned seats and Mom and Dad are
enjoying the ride. This was a trip to the library with Pam at the controls
and my first view of this cool way to get from here to there.

50 years of gardening
Jim and Berdene Biersner have
lived in the same house for 50 years
and we have all watched as Jim has
spent his free time planting a very
successful garden. His garden has
also been a 50 year project. For the
first time this year I have watched
his previous weed free garden turn
into an extraordinary luscious green
patch of grass. What was the best
part of gardening Jim? He will always remember learning gardening
tips from his Father Allie Biersner
and watching his garden produce
bountiful harvests.
Jim started his garden on the back
of his lot and as we all know it was
always weed free. His favorite garden tool is the 4 pronged long handle
fork. Jim informed me he has had
just about all vegetables in his garden on time or another. He had the
favorites, tomatoes, potatoes, beans,
cukes, onions and peppers. Some
years he would try cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli. His all time favorite that he will miss the most is
the sweet potato. He can remember
when he experimented with growing peanuts. They just didn't catch
his fancy. In case you are wondering about sweet corn, well it took up
too much room so he left corn to the
farmers. He might have forgotten a
few other garden crops but one thing
is for sure and that is we will miss
watching his garden grow. The extended family members and neighbors will have to get their veggies
at the store. The garden has filled
many fruit jars and freezer bags for
the family.
So what do we see in the back
yard? Flowers, grapevine and rhubarb and one potted tomato he just
couldn't live without. With that
grapevine, Jim has found that he
can make several wreaths each year.
I found two home made wreaths
hanging in the garage and his special
seasonal wreaths were in storage.
He has a couple of good reasons
for giving up on gardening and we
can all relate to the fact that with
age, bending, kneeling and the inability to get off the ground is way
too much work.
With the decision to have extra
time on your hands, now what do
you do Jim? "I have this nice green
John Deere riding lawn mower and
I spend as much time on it as I did
in the garden." How is that possible?
I mow my lawn and then head to
Jim Jr's yard and then trailer over to
grandson Brodie's and with plenty of
daylight and gas left, I finish the last
lawn at grandson Luke's house. He
has had a very busy spring and he
knows that with each shower of rain,
he will be back in the saddle again.

News from the Wellsburg Library
A pizza party with prizes made our
final summer reading program event
pretty special. With fantastic participation the conclusion was fun for all.
As we were waiting for the pizza to
arrive we enjoyed hearing the true
story of Scarlett the Cat to the Rescue:
Fire Hero. Then those with perfect
attendance were given a prize of ear
buds. They included Alex Bausman,
Madeline Bausman, Leah Beving,
Clay Buseman, Landen Dennis, Carly
DeVries, Claire Diamond, Colton
Diamond, Ali Gerbracht, Gavin Gerbracht, Eleanor Martin, Alex Meyer,
Kenleigh Murra, Eli Rose, Braelyn
Schafer, and Sidney Schafer.
After enjoying pizza, juice boxes,
and cookies, the preschoolers received
their prizes. This was followed by
the drawing of winners in grades K - 4
for a variety of lego prizes. The more
books an individual reportedly read,
the more chances there were for that
individual to win a prize.
In addition, we are asking each
child who participated in the summer program to stop by the library
to pick up a coupon for a free child’s
admission to Barn Stahl Farm. Other
contributors that made this year’s program such a super success were Arby’s @ the Mill, Grainway, People’s
Savings Bank, Snittjer Grain, Van
Heiden Tiling & Construction, Wellsburg Ag, Wellsburg Insurance, and
the Wellsburger. Our sincere thanks
is extended to these businesses.
To encourage continued summer
reading, reading Bingo forms were
sent home at the conclusion of the
pizza party with kids in grades K 4.
All those in grades K - 4 are eligible
to "play" so if your child didn't get
one of these forms last week, please
stop by the library to pick one up.
All those attending the pizza party headed home with a pretty super
prize last week.
Making a super power wand completed the Story Time portion of “Every Hero Has a Story” last week. These preschoolers also enjoyed the
stories of Super Red Riding Hood and Hero Dad and meeting the ladybug puppet.

Picnic-Wiches With Greek Artichoke-Beet Relish
FAMILY FEATURES
P
erk up your next picnic with these deliciously different sandwiches and salads that are super easy to prepare, plus they can be made ahead.
Condiments make the difference between a good sandwich and a great
sandwich. Grab a jar of sliced pickled beets, the sweet-tangy homemade flavor
makes them a perfect base for quick relish to embellish all kinds of sandwiches.
For a Greek-inspired relish, chop and toss the beets with marinated artichoke
hearts and olives. Add to a basic turkey sandwich for a gourmet twist. Wrap
up brunch favorites smoked salmon and cream cheese in a flour tortilla with a
chopped pickled beet-red onion-caper relish. Delicious any time!
Pantry staples, such as 3- or 4-bean salad and German potato salad, are handy
head starts to fabulous salads. A can of bean salad, cooked tortellini, veggies and
basil pesto make a picnic-perfect salad in minutes. German potato salad paired
with grainy mustard and sliced steak becomes a rustic entree salad to serve atop
convenient packaged greens.
Patio party or potluck in the park, these new picnic picks will bring compliments.

Cougar's struggle
offensively during
winless week
ACKLEY – AGWSR hitters
managed just 10 combined hits in
three games while dropping a trio of
games last week.
Two of the losses were shutouts
against the top two teams in North
Iowa Cedar League West Division
play, 7-0 to West Marshall and 16-0
to East Marshall. AGWSR also fell
4-3 to Iowa Falls-Alden in nonconference play.
AGWSR (4-15 overall, 2-10
NICL West) fell at Dike-New
Hartford Monday (details in next
week's paper) and hosted West
Marshall Tuesday before wrapping
up its regular season with a nonconference game against North
Butler Wednesday.
West Marshall 7, AGWSR 0
West Marshall sophomore pitcher
Cody Mead threw a four-hit shutout
as the Cougars dropped their sixth
straight conference game.
The Trojans scored the only run
they would need in the first inning
and were in control throughout the
night.
AGWSR's offense consisted of
four singles, two of which came
from Caleb Bartling.

DIKE – The Wolverine baseball
team went a perfect 5-0 in the most
recent week of play, shutting out
Grundy Center 14-0 and HamptonDumont 4-0, and besting Oelwein
6-3 and BCLUW 12-2, 18-6.
The Wolverines (17-6 overall,
9-3 NICL-West) sit third in the
conference going into the final week
of regular season play. They were
scheduled to host AGWSR Monday
and Don Bosco Tuesday, and will
play East Marshall at Gilman
Thursday before returning home
against Union Friday.
“We are really clicking on all
cylinders right now and it’s pretty
fun to sit back and watch the boys
go out and play with energy and
passion,” Dike-New Hartford head
coach Sean Leonard said. “They are
playing hungry and with something
to prove each night. The guys are
genuinely pulling for each other.”
“Offensively, we are getting
production from everybody in the
lineup,” he said. “Defensively,
we are feeding off of each other.
We have made some great plays
through this stretch. Our pitching
has been phenomenal. Everybody
is playing with a lot of confidence.
We still make mistakes and we can
still improve. But, right now, we feel
pretty good with how we are playing.
It’s not about wins, it’s about playing
well and competing. And that’s what
the boys are doing.”

Tri-County
baseball team wins Traer title
The fifth-sixth-grade Grundy Center Tri-County Baseball Team won the championship last week in Traer.
The team had to win every game to stay in the winner’s bracket. It played Dysart first, winning 9-1 with
Dayne Zinkula pitching. Its second game was a 6-0 victor over North Tama with Logan Knaack throwing
a no hitter. In the Championship game, Grundy Center met Gladbrook-Reinbeck for the third time in a
