SPECTACULAR
OPENING WEEKEND!
Dear Friends,
Each program I will conduct this season has special meaning to
me and to my time here in Tucson. Alain Lefèvre’s performance on
opening weekend will mark the 10th anniversary of the first time he
played the Gershwin Piano Concerto with the TSO, putting us on a
new artistic direction which culminated in the recording of our CD.
Der Rosenkavalier is simply the most beautiful love music ever
written and I am looking forward to conducting it in a community
that I have loved for so many years.
Mahler took Beethoven’s final work, a “farewell” quartet and
transformed a goodbye into a work looking to the future and all
its possibilities. It seems an appropriate time for both me and the
TSO to perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 as we all look ahead to
the future.
Regards always,
George Hanson
Music Director & Conductor

Bernstein was a great mentor and personal
friend. He was my most important musical
influence and I treasure the time I spent with
him. Alain made a great contribution to the
artistic development of this organization.
He brought to us the most important artistic
project in our history – our first internationally
released CD recording. He’s an exceptional
artist and a great friend.

Vadim Gluzman and I became good friends after he gave the most
exciting performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the
TSO that I’ve ever heard. When we learned that he would be
performing the Prokofiev Violin Concerto with the Berlin
Philharmonic, we knew we wanted to have him come back and
perform it with us. As it turns out, after he performs it with the
TSO in December, he’ll go directly from Tucson to Berlin the
following week.

Conducting a work by a favorite composer with whom he worked, Leonard Bernstein, and
reuniting with his friend, pianist Alain Lefèvre, makes the opener one of the highlights of
George Hanson’s final season with the TSO. This classic American program kicks things off
in high style with Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from the 1944 musical, On the Town,
George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto performed by Mr. Lefèvre and concludes with the
essential American symphony, Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3.
Friday, January 16, 8:00 pm and Sunday, January 18, 2:00 pm
Richard Strauss’ Presentation of the Rose/Final Trio from Der Rosenkavalier is one of the most
sublime moments in opera. The beautiful music of the three female voices which has made it an
audience favorite for a century will be sung by Katie Van Kooten who returns to the TSO after
her debut in Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis; Heidi Grant Murphy from the Metropolitan Opera and
rising young mezzo-soprano Angela Brower. In partnership with the Tucson Desert Song Festival

Chee-Yun, praised by The New York Times as, “a talented instrumentalist, with the kind
of high-gloss tone that pulls sensuously at the listener’s ear,” makes her TSO debut
performing Tchaikovsky’s breathtakingly beautiful Violin Concerto, one of the most beloved
violin concertos ever written. Grieg’s Norwegian Dances and Nielsen’s Symphony No. 2
paint a portrait of Norway’s people and culture.
Classic 3: Rachmaninoff & Dvořřák:
The Power of Romance
TSO PREMIERE!
Friday, February 13, 8:00 pm and Sunday, February 15, 2:00 pm
“A beautiful, life-affirming program with two of my favorite heroic masterpieces surrounding
a one-of-a-kind American classic from 1983”– David Alan Miller. Kimberly Toscano, TSO
principal timpanist, makes her solo debut performing William Kraft’s Timpani Concerto No. 1,
casting a spotlight on an instrument of the orchestra most often seen from a great distance.
“The piece explores the extent of the instrument,” explains Toscano. “It is a masterfully
composed work and an extremely rewarding experience for performer and listener alike.”
Mahler: Symphony No. 3
Friday, March 13, 8:00 pm and Sunday, March 15, 2:00 pm
An exciting mix of some of the most powerful works of the Romantic period with a
celebratory opener from one of America’s most innovative composers: Javelin (composed
for the 1996 Olympics) is post-minimalist Michael Torke’s best known work; 1997 Van
Cliburn Gold Medalist Jon Nakamatsu makes his TSO debut performing Rachmaninoff’s
Third Piano Concerto, considered a pianistic feat. A love of trains and the romance of train
travel inspired Dvořřák’s seventh symphony.
Classic 4: Brahms and Prokofiev
TSO PREMIERE!
George Hanson brings his tenure as Music Director and Conductor to a fitting and
inspiring close with Gustav Mahler’s massive Symphony No. 3. By doing so, he continues
his acclaimed conducting of Gustav Mahler’s work that has identified him as a “Mahler
specialist” in Europe. The Symphony No. 3 may provide the finest illustration of Mahler’s
musical philosophy that, “The symphony must be like the world. It must embrace
everything.” Perfect music for a springtime evening or afternoon, it was composed in the
summer on the shores of beautiful Lake Attersee in the mountains outside Salzburg with
the sounds of nature, man and emotions. A great ode to nature!
Classic 8: Haydn and Bruckner
George Hanson, conductor • Vadim Gluzman, violin
David Danzmayr, conductor • Josh Roman, cello
TSO PREMIERE!
Friday, December 5, 8:00 pm and Sunday, December 7, 2:00 pm
A concert of lush musical contrasts: Israeli violinist Vadim Gluzman returns to the TSO for
the first time since standing ovations and rave reviews greeted his debut in 2010. His recent
performance of Prokofiev’s Spanish influenced Second Violin Concerto was hailed by The
New York Times as “a workout that balanced thoughtfulness and visceral power.” A new
work by TSO Composer-in-Residence Dan Coleman opens the program and the soaring
crescendos of Brahms’ First Symphony bring the concert to a powerful close.

composer’s very special spirituality. Nicknamed “Romantic” by Bruckner himself, the fourth
is his most popular work and one of the cornerstones of Austrian music. Josh Roman,
called, “A cellist of extraordinary technical and musical gifts” by the San Francisco Chronicle,

Mahler was inspired by Beethoven’s final string
quartet to write his third symphony. Beethoven
wrote this quartet as a farewell: Mahler took this
“goodbye” and created from it a whole new world,
full of wonderful possibilities. It is my favorite
orchestral work and an appropriate one to conclude
my years in Tucson – a community which has
meant so much to me and to my family.
