combination of compelling artistry, technical finesse, and
engaging personality has secured his place as one of the most
sought-after cellists today.
Dear Music Lovers & Supporters,
I am glad to welcome all of you to another year of great
symphonic music. This season, a Romantic spirit will
resound through every concert of our series. From the
warm sounds of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, to the anticipated
return of Mary Scott Goode in Rachmaninoff’s Second
Piano Concerto, and finally the raw & sensual appeal of
Orff’s Carmina Burana, countless variations of Romance
in music will be yours for the taking.
TSO is also proud to continue established traditions
and create new ones. This year, our Christmas Family
Spectacular will feature Holiday Pops performed in
a brand new venue: The John Thomas Theater of the
Sullivan Performing Arts Center. I am very excited about
the new musical possibilities offered by this new space.
Student Concerts at the Perot will again provide our

In our opening concert, through the music of Felix
Mendelssohn (1809-1847), Johannes Brahms (18331897), and Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904), TSO invites you
to begin this new season with masters who defined the
Romantic style. First understood as antithetic to Classical
attributes such as symmetry and balance, Romantic
music slowly came to represent the unpredictable,
sometimes irrational, and often emotional aspects
of musical composition. Despite Mendelssohn’s and
Brahms’ regards for the techniques and styles of the past
and Dvořák’s interest in nationalism in music, there are
lyrical and majestic qualities to their art that can only be
described as Romantic.
I am also especially excited to collaborate with cellist
Zuill Bailey, one of the leading young musicians of his
generation. TSO strives to bring to you the best and
brightest, and we are keeping this promise with Zuill’s
visit and performance.
Looking forward to seeing you all on November 10th
at 6:45pm for our first Preview Talk and concert of the
season.

I am principal horn of the TSO as well as the orchestra librarian. As principal
horn, I play the 1st horn parts and supervise the rest of the horn section,
working on playing together both rhythmically and stylistically. I have lived
in Shreveport, LA, since 1983, where I am principal horn with the Shreveport
Symphony and the Music Librarian at the Hurley School of Music at Centenary
College. During the summer months, I perform with the Des Moines Metro
Opera Orchestra and the Cabrillo Festival in Santa Cruz, CA. I am also active as
a composer and my music has been performed in the U.S., Mexico, and Great
Britain. I am married to TSO principal flutist Sally Horak. We have 2 children,
Greg and Gretchen.

As orchestra librarian, I am responsible for ordering music for all the TSO
concerts, either using parts from our library, purchasing parts we don’t own,
or renting parts that are not available for purchase. Preparing the music is a
multi-step process and takes several weeks to go from player to player. Once
the music arrives, the wind, brass, and percussion parts are distributed to the
musicians playing those parts. The string music first goes to the concertmaster
who “bows” the part. The bowing of parts has to be coordinated among all the
strings to ensure as much uniformity of sound and articulation as possible.
This means that, for the most part, all the string players’ bows are moving
up and down at the same time. A bow stroke that travels left to right is a
downbow, right to left is an upbow, and the concertmaster marks his part
accordingly in pencil with a V stroke for an upbow and a sideways bracket-like
mark for downbow. These bowings are then transferred to all the 1st violin
parts, and a part is given to each of the string principals, except for the bassist.
The violin 2, viola, and cello principals then bow their respective parts from
the violin 1 master part, so the string sections are coordinated as much as
possible. The principal bass player bows his part from the principal cello part,
since the cellos and basses are often playing in octaves with one another.
Once I have all the bowings from the principal strings, these are transferred to
each part. Since the bowings are often adjusted during rehearsals, each string
stand must have a marked part, not a photocopy.
After the concert, the librarian collects the music and mails rental parts back to
the publisher. Lost parts are expensive to replace, so I must take care that each
part is numbered and tracked according to who has what part. Occasionally I
have to track down an errant player who has forgotten to leave the music on
the stand after the concert. Thus, the librarian’s work is not finished after the
last note of the concert, but only when the parts are safely back to the library
or the publisher!

Composer Felix Mendelssohn is credited for resurrecting
Johann Sebastian Bach’s forgotten masterworks,
namely the St. Matthew Passion, and reinstating the
Baroque master as a marking figure of music history.
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
After listening to a performance of Victor Herbert’s
Second Cello Concerto at a New York Philharmonic
concert, Dvořák became convinced that he could write
a piece for the instrument, although he never believed
up to that point that the cello was meant to be featured
in a concerto.
It took Brahms forty years to find the courage to
write a symphony after Beethoven’s nine masterful
contributions to the canon. Hence Brahms’ First
Symphony is sometimes referred to as Beethoven’s
Tenth!
