For Worship and For Witness Morning Worship Service
For Worship and For Witness Morning Worship Service June 19, 2011 twocitieschurch.org 1 Thank you for joining us this morning. Please be sure to get your name tag at the welcome table. There are blank name tags to fill out for guests. If you have any questions about Two Cities Church or the worship service, please ask one of our greeters or worship leaders. A nursery is available for children ages 0-4. It is straight down the hall on the right from the main entrance. Older children are encouraged to stay throughout the service. A Kids’ Worship Program is available at the welcome table to help them participate more meaningfully. Please don’t worry if your kids are a bit wiggly or make a little noise. It won’t bother us. However, if you feel your child needs a “break” at any point during the service, feel free to take them to the back of the room or to the hallway. We do ask that a parent be with children outside of the nursery at all times. After the service, please stay to visit with friends and meet someone new. Prelude When the music begins, please take a seat and quietly prepare for worship. Welcome Please take a moment to fill out the welcome card in your worship program to let us know you were here. Place the card in the offering plate later in the service. Call to Worship Leader: From Psalm 118 The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. . . O loving Father, forgive us our pride and blindness for Jesus’ sake. Give to us a greater sense of humility about who we are. Help us to see how desperately we need your mercy and grace. By your Spirit renew us, and make us to be the men and women you want us to be. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. Silent Confession Words of Comfort and Assurance “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13, 14) 6 7 8 9 Old Testament Reading Numbers 13:25-14:25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, "We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan." But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, "Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it." 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are." 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, "The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them." 30 1 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?" 4 And they said to one another, "Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt." night. 2 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them." 10 Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel. 5 And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done 11 10 among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they." But Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people. For you, O LORD, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 16 'It is because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.' 17 And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 18 'The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.' 19 Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now." 13 Then the LORD said, "I have pardoned, according to your word. 21 But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD, 22 none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, 23 shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. 24 But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. 25 Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea." 20 Prayers for the Church and the World Sermon Scripture Psalm 98 A PSALM. 1 O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. 3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 11 4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! 5 Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD! 7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! 8 Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together 9 before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity. Preaching of God’s Word Rev. Adam L. He descended into Hell. The third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. (n.b. the word "catholic" means "universal" and the word "quick" means "living") The Lord’s Supper Instructions The Lord’s Supper is the family meal of Christians. We invite all who are followers of Jesus Christ and baptized members of his church to participate. If you are not a follower of Jesus Christ, or are not prepared to share in the meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer using the prayers below. We hope this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. We use wine in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Grape juice is also available in the cups at the center of each tray. A Prayer for Those Searching Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and lead me to the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. A Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weak and sinful, but through you, I am loved and accepted. I thank you for taking my place in death in order to offer me forgiveness and renewal. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and my Lord. A Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. 14 Offering of Our Gifts and Lives Don’t forget to fill out the welcome card and place it in the offering plate. Romans 15:13 Benediction “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Closing Song Based on Psalm 117 (Sung to the tune of “All Creatures of Our God and King”) From all that dwell below the skies, O let Jehovah’s praise arise! Alleluia! Alleluia! And let his glorious name be sung, in every land, by every tongue! O praise him! O praise him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Great are the mercies of the LORD, and truth eternal is his Word; Alleluia! Alleluia! Ye nations, sound from shore to shore, Jehovah’s praise forevermore! O praise him! O praise him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! 15 Announcements Helping with worship: Nursery: Today (?); Next Week (?)
