Dolphin Tale 2
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20TH, 7:00 PM
“This high-flying, Oscar-nominated
documentary, which tracks the seasonal
flight patterns of dozens of different birds
from all seven continents, is a soaring
achievement. Filmmaker Jacques
Perrin’s nature travelogue was shot over
three years, and uses state-of-the-art
video technology to capture stunning
life-and-death sequences of avian
adventure.” (msn.com). 2003. 89 minutes.
The tale of Winter the dolphin continues
in “Dolphin Tale 2”. Join us for a special
screening of this family favourite at the
Painswick library. Winter, a dolphin who
was rescued and fitted with a prosthetic
tail, may have to leave her home and
start over at a new aquarium after she
loses her tank companion. Since US
regulations say she cannot be housed
alone, time is running out to find a new
companion for Winter. 2014. 107 minutes. – 9:00 PM

Circle of Readers promotes a love of reading and selfesteem. This program is aimed at building the reading
skills of 6-9 year olds. Under the supervision of library
staff, participants read with a volunteer for the first part
of the hour. The second part of the program involves a
group activity and finally everyone comes together for a
reading circle. We all work together as a group to read a
certain number of books, and when we reach our goal
we celebrate!
Online registration for these five week sessions begins
on Tuesday September 8th at 10:00 am. A link to the
Survey Monkey registration form will be posted on the
Parents and Teachers page of our website. Please
register for only one session and library location per
child and have your library card on hand. Registrations
will be accepted without a library card but preference
will be given to library card holders. Completion of
the registration form does not guarantee a spot in the
program. Successful registration applicants will be
contacted by library staff starting September 14th. For

[email protected]
Join library staff as they participate in the MacLaren Art
Centre’s celebration of Carnegie Days! Listen to tales of
adventure and discovery! By identifying with characters,
whether animal or human, picture books allow children
to experience new adventures as stories unfold. Classic
characters such as Clifford, Babar and Madeleine and
newer favourites like Olivia and Franklin continue to
inspire children. At this library program, children will enjoy
stories, songs and rhymes and then have fun making art
in a related craft. A great time for the whole family! At
Downtown, this program replaces the usual Saturday
10:30 am Drop-in Storytime. Fun for the whole family.
Free. No registration required. For information contact the

Paws 4 Stories
The Barrie Public Library is very pleased to partner
with St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs to offer “Paws
4 Stories”. This St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog
Community Service was introduced to assist in helping
to improve the reading skills of children by having a child
read to a Therapy Dog. The idea of a child reading to a
dog has been around for many years. There is evidence
that children quickly improved their reading skills and
comprehension and gain confidence and self-esteem
in their relationships with others. Current Therapy Dog
teams have completed a minimum of 40 visits in the adult
Therapy Dog program, have been recommended by the
Unit Coordinator and have successfully passed the Child
Test Evaluation, including the Paws 4 Stories module.
Children between the ages of 6-10 years may register
to read to a Therapy Dog for 30 minutes. Children may
initially register for no more than two half hour reading
sessions during this Fall session This will enable more
children
to participate in this
popular program. The
primary goal of this
program is to connect
children who are
struggling with reading,
social skills or personal
confidence to practice
reading in the safe,
non-judgemental
companionship of a
dog. The Therapy Dog
volunteers are not teachers and do not teach reading but
will do their best to support the children as they read to
the dog. Library staff, Therapy Dog volunteers and the
children themselves will work together to find reading
material for the child.
For the Fall of 2015, this program is being offered during
the month of October at the Downtown location on
Tuesday evenings October 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th.
Children can choose either a 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm or 7:00
pm - 7:30 pm timeslot. Because the dogs may change
from week to week, children will simply be paired up with
whichever dog is available when they arrive. To register
for your one or two half hour reading sessions, visit an
Information Services Desk or call 705-728-1010 ext. 7019
starting Monday September 14th.

Reel Time Films: Uyghurs, Prisoners
of the Absurd
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 6:45 PM - 8:45 PM
Downtown Angus Ross Meeting Room
Join us for a screening of this compelling
documentary from the National Film Board:
“Uyghurs, Prisoners of the Absurd ” Filmmaker:
Patricio Henríquez. This is the incredible odyssey
of a group of men from China’s persecuted Uyghur
minority who were detained in Guantánamo as
terrorists. Part human drama, part political thriller,
this thought-provoking documentary exposes the
cold logic of post–September 11 geopolitical game
masters who flout international law as they shift
their pawns. This film will be preceded by a short
film directed by Theodore Ushev, “Blood Manifesto”:
All over the world, idealist revolutionaries shed their
blood to denounce injustices. Yet blood is also the
very symbol of life. Sketches drawn using filmmaker
Theodore Ushev’s own blood explore this paradox.
Why fight for ideals, noble though they may be, if
you must die for them in the end? Are rebellion and
insurrection egotistical deeds, or are they lessons
in pure altruism? 2015, 98 minutes + 2 min short film,
Rating: 14A
Reel Time Films: The Dance of the Words
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Painswick Massie Family Program Room
Join us for a screening of this compelling
documentary from the National Film Board:
“The Dance of Words” Filmmaker: Yves Étienne
Massicotte. How would you feel if your child was
born deaf? For Chantal Deguire, it meant that
her son could be a meaningful and central part of
the community with which she herself so closely
identifies. Meet Chantal and other creative young
artists in Quebec’s deaf community. These
emerging artists show how they are using the
arts to build a deaf culture that makes them
proud. This film will be preceded by a short film
directed by William Canning, “For You, Mr. Bell”,
which profiles Alexander Graham Bell, inventor
of the telephone and pioneer in many other fields
of technology, and tells the story of a man whose
main concern was finding a way to alleviate the
problems deaf people faced

Alison Pick. Alison is most recently the author of
the moving memoir Between Gods. As a teenager,
Alison made a startling discovery: that her paternal
grandparents, who had escaped from the Czech
Republic during WWII, were Jewish--and that most
of this side of the family had died in concentration
camps. When Alison is diagnosed with depression,
she begins exploring this side of her family history.
During her quest to discover a sense of self and a
sense of worth, she begins to believe that returning
to her family’s Jewish roots would be a step in the
right direction. Between Gods has been nominated
for the 2015 Forest of Reading Evergreen Award.
