The Courier Volume 87, Number 2 White Plains, New York 10605 DECEMBER 2010 Community Service Club Gives Back by Ethan Burg The Community Service Club is a group of students who get together every week after school to do good things for the community. The club is run by Mrs. Levin at Highlands. The club recently collected and donated backpacks for homeless people who often move from place to place and have to carry their belongings with them. Usually these people have to put their personal belongings in shopping bags or garbage bags which aren’t as strong. They can’t afford to buy something better to hold their items. Mrs. Levin’s daughter also works for a charity called Midnight Run which gives food, clothing, shelter, and toiletries to homeless people. Mrs. Levin would like to congratulate everyone for collecting almost 150 backpacks and duffel bags. These will be a good replacement for the sacks and garbage bags they currently use. The bags will be given out at the next Midnight Run just in time for Christmas. Mr. Sanchez, a social studies teacher who just returned from deployment, come in and talk about his experience, and the members of the club wrote letters to other soldiers who were working hard for our country. In addition, the club made 95 Halloween goody bags filled with candy, toys, and handmade cards to give to children who were at Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla and couldn’t go trick or treating. They also had The community service club is still coming up with new things to do to help our community. If you have any questions or need help with future activities, please see Mrs. Levin at Highlands, Room 363. Most recently, they joined up with the animal lovers club and had a service dog come in and learned about what the dog did for the community. Seventh and Eighth Graders Dance the Night Away By Maria Cortezano Our 7th and 8th grade dance was a huge success this year! Everyone had tons of fun despite the number of people that attended. We got a nice mix of both Highlands and Eastview students. It seems that a lot of people purchased food and drinks throughout the course of the evening. Our music selections included top 10 songs and it was lots of fun for everyone, including the teachers. You could catch a few of our teachers even dancing along with us! The S.O.’s dance committee plans to include more decorations, music Eastview S.O. officers (left to right) Aneri Cuther, Michelle Chin and Chris Dagher have been very busy. In addition to helping plan the dance, they’ve also helped plan a food drive and a toy drive. and a theme for the next dance. The date for the next 7th and 8th grade dance is March 4th and the next 6th grade dance will take place on March 18. Check back for more fun activities from the S.O.! Eastview Students Salute Veterans with their Voices by Jenie Jasne This year, Eastview held a Veterans Day celebration. All the choruses performed. It began with a flag presentation, and a performance of “Taps. The 6th grade chorus performed “Everyday Heroes”, while the 7th grade chorus performed “We Will Not Forget”, and the 8th grade chorus performed “Bless Our Troops”. Everyone simultaneously, (vocally and in sign-language), performed America”. “God Bless In between songs, Cardon Furry, Josephine Mercado, Chris Dagher, Annick Tabb, Jared Rogovin, Raina Kadavil, Michelle Chin, and Aneri Suthar made speeches about Veterans’ Day, and veterans. Following the celebration, a reception was held for all families, friends, and veterans. Mrs. Levin is the advisor of the Community Service Club Sixth Graders Give Thanks The Harvest Feast: The Thanksgiving celebration at Highlands Middle School By Ben Malcomsen The Harvest Feast at Highlands Middle School, a 6th grade Thanksgiving celebration, is really a wondrous occasion. All of the 6th graders bring in a food that represents their heritage, family, or country and share it with the rest of the grade. You can imagine how much food there is. There was everything from red velvet cake to California rolls, a kind of sushi invented in California with all-cooked ingredients. There were Spring Musical: three separate feasts; one for team X, one for team Y, and one for team Z. A student on team X (like me!) named Jose Mendez said,” I made papusas. They are from El Salvador.” Another student on team X named Giovanni Velásquez stated his opinion on the Harvest Feast. He said,” I think the Harvest Feast is a really cool place to chill with your friends, eat food from all around the world, relax for a little bit, and maybe miss two periods of class.” I completely agree. And I think that we should all thank Mr. Jones, a 6th grade Social Studies teacher, for organizing the whole thing. World News: Fire Devastation in Israel By Hadar Arens By Lauren LaPlaca The school play is back Highlands and Eastview again! The play this year is a new one that you may have never heard of, but I’m telling you that it is a very cool, very awesome, and a very modern play. Dear Edwina Junior is written in a style similar to Schoolhouse Rock Live and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown. The whole cast of the play can tell you how much we have fallen in love with it. Now I’m going to give you a little sneak peak of what this play is all about. Edwina Spoonapple is the creator of the show “Dear Edwina.” It is an advicegiving show hosted in her own garage. Then the day comes when the talent scout of the Kalamazoo Advice-A Palooza festival comes. She is very nervous and extra stressed this day. She and her friends work together to make this show the best ever! Her friends are very different and have different talents which sends different messages to the audience. This is what makes it very funny or serious. She has some obstacles to overcome throughout her show, and when she finishes her show and it has a shocking ending. I’m sorry but I cannot tell you anymore. You can figure out the story by coming to the Highlands auditorium March 24th and 25th by coming to see this fabulous play. Don’t miss it! A few weeks ago, on December 2nd a fire began unexpectedly in the State of Israel, in the Middle East. About 17,000 people were evacuated from their homes to a safe place, for a while, until this catastrophe was over. In addition, 40 people died in the fire. Mostly, prison guards which had died in the fire. The fire was located in the city of Haifa. The Carmel Mountains, in the northern part of Haifa, were burned. The fire travelled 4,290 ft in less than three minutes. An orphanage for kids also burned down, if you would like to donate money to this cause, please visit the following web site: www.bbc.com.uk/news/worldmiddle-east-11901750.html Page 2 Editorial: ROAR Tickets What do you think about ROAR Tickets? Some people say there is no point to these tickets. While others LOVE ROAR Tickets. Why is there such a big difference in opinion? We set out on a mission to find out. We asked some kids about the subject of ROAR Tickets and we got all different kinds of opinions. People believe there should be better prizes. For example, instead of getting a certificate (which some people like, but others don’t), they should offer a homework pass for one class. Don’t you think that’s better? Now…about doing good deeds—though doing good things is not something you do just to get rewards, if someone IS caught doing something good, the tickets should be useful. Even an extra point or two on your next quiz would be useful for one of your classes. Another thing, when you get a ROAR ticket, make sure you give it to the teacher The courier at lunch when they call for them. It’s frustrating because some kids just walk up to the front of the line during lunch when they call for Roar Tickets, even if they don’t have one. Some other opinions we got about ROAR Tickets were that they are not fairly distributed or distributed AT ALL! Some kids even say that mostly the bad kids get the ROAR Tickets and the good kids are never recognized. Others say that teachers forget to give them out, which gets their hopes up for nothing and makes these tickets meaningless. Those are some examples from kids that don’t like ROAR Tickets. Though there are kids that don’t like ROAR Tickets there are many people that do like them. Some kids think that it is nice to be recognized for doing the right thing. They say that it feels good to be appreciated for the good things that you do. But out of all the people that we interviewed, only a few like ROAR Tickets. As a result, a group of students recently met with teachers and administrators to discuss what the school can do to change the tickets and make them more desirable. The meeting was very productive. Stay tuned for the new and improved Meals on Wheels Program Delivers Food and Warm Smiles by Jack Ryan Looking for some community service that will make you feel good about yourself? Well, look no further. Meals-on-Wheels is a program that brings one hot meal and one cold meal, with a beverage, to someone who is not able to go out or cook for themselves. Just imagine, it’s a school holiday, you are planning to go out with your friends, and your parent tells you that you are taking time out of your own schedule to deliver food to people in need. “No way!” you might say, but trust me; the feeling of doing a good deed that is helping others is a great one. It is usually for elderly people that can’t go out or cook, but it is also for people that have disabilities, physical and/or mental. Mealson-Wheels can give you something to feel good about, and I hope that some people will consider giving their time if the opportunity arises. ROAR ticket! [email protected] By Allison Jasne Ms. Irvine, the new Earth Science teacher at Eastview, is rocking Earth Science! She is one of many 8th graders’ favorite teachers because of her outgoing and freeform style of teaching. I got the chance to ask her a few questions, and some of her responses were really funny! She isn’t one of those uncool, 90,000 year old teachers, a “hip” teacher who isn’t, or a bore. Read the rest of this article to find out why. She has always taught in White Plains in the high school, Highlands, and now Eastview. If she could establish a school club, the would want to do something related to rain gardens, volunteer clean-up days, energy conservation projects, and recycling initiatives. The Courier Managing Editor Drew Smiley Ms. Irvine Rocks Earth Science! Ms. Irvine has many hobbies: she likes to knit, cook, travel, read, and says, “Oh…and I’m pretty good on the Wii too!” She has varying music taste. “Oh no… that’s like asking me which of my children is my favorite. IMPOSSIBLE! Let’s be general by decade…70’s: I listened to a lot of Led Zeppelin and Lou Reed. 80’s was all about Van Halen, U2 and I have to admit I was a big-haired heavy metal rock babe. Madonna did NOTHING for me! 90’s: I had my kids so I was a bit more mellow and into Pearl Jam and Gun’s and Roses. Lately…I find myself listening to a lot of Breaking Benjamin, my old Queen albums, Van Morrison and Jeff Buckley…a real mix of stuff like that. Sorry...I just CANNOT answer the question simply… lol” I asked her what she expects from her students. She said, “I expect students to try, to be willing to struggle, to take responsibility for their own learning and academic advancement and to reach out to me when they need help. I’m here to guide kids through what they need to know to be successful in Earth Science. I can’t do the learning for them. So I’m not interested in excuses…If you try and fail, that’s fine by me. Just please be willing to try again and don’t give up until you get it. I’ll be here to help.” Corrections The November article about floor hockey was written by Harry Seymour. It was mistakenly credited to Drew Smiley. The headline for the article about Senora Alfonso should have read “Buena Suerte”. It was misspelled in the previous issue. Lo sentimos! Page 3 The courier Highlands Teacher Spotlight: MRS. LYONS Eastview Staff Member’s Hidden Talent Revealed Mrs. Lyons By Elana Mariani Mrs. Lyons is one of the many favorite teachers at Highlands. I interviewed her and found out many interesting things. Mrs. Lyons teaches ELA to Team 7F students. She is starting her thirteenth year teaching, but her seventh at Highlands. Although she has always been an ELA teacher, that was not always her favorite subject. Believe it or not, her favorite subject as a kid was History! Or at least it was History until eleventh grade when Mr. Paccione, her English teacher, stoked her passion for English. Interestingly enough, there is another teacher in this school who had him -- Mrs. Torres! She is also an ELA teacher but she teaches on 6X. They both agree that he really inspired them. She got her start as teacher when she was selected for a program called “Teach For America” where she learned many new skills. They placed her in New Orleans to teach seventh and ninth grade. She then immediately fell in love with teaching Mr. Bala By Jordan White Mrs. Lyons credits her eleventh grade English teacher, Mr. Paccione, for inspiring her to teach. middle school. After the program, she knew that it was her destiny to teach ELA. Mrs. Lyons chose seventh grade because they are not the youngest in the school, and not the oldest, either. Now, she loves teaching middle school. She really feels lucky to be able to work here at Highlands with such a great staff and students. Mrs. Lyons is an awesome teacher! Although it may seem like Mrs. Lyons is always teaching or reading, she does do other things. When she has free time, she enjoys taking spinning classes, reading on her Kindle, keeping up on the news, and just spending time with her family. Being outside also makes her happy. Her guilty pleasure is reading magazines. Her favorite genres are historical fiction, fantasy, and reading about real people such as biographies and autobiographies. She likes reading about education, too. I asked Mrs. Lyons which she liked more—reading or writing? She answered that it all depends. She finds that reading is relaxing, but writing is By Julia Chen Shaun Davis By Luis Aguirre Shaun eventually Mr.Bala said that he learned how to draw well in the sixth grade when he was in Africa. He told me that his father would buy him a coloring book and made him copy the pictures to the best of his ability instead of having him color He said that the length of making pictures depends on his mood. If he is not feeling very happy, it will take longer for him to complete a picture and if he is in a good mood then the picture will get completed faster. Sometimes it takes 5 days and sometimes it takes 5 minutes. He says that he’s been doing art in Mr. Wallace’s classroom on his board for ten years. Mr. Bala also stated that if he starts to do a picture and he messes up, he doesn’t give up he just tries again. He says that if he puts his mind to it, he can do it. He also says if someone or something is bothering him, he’ll just draw it and he’ll feel better. He also said that he loves what he does. Eastview Welcomes New Family and Consumer Science Teacher the ocean. She likes to travel Mrs. Hunt around the world, and her Popular Highlands Custodian Boasts an Interesting Past Shaun Davis has been a custodian at Highlands for ten years. Many students know him as a hard working and friendly member of the staff, as well as a mentor to many students. What a lot of people don’t know is that Shaun has a very interesting past. Shaun used to work as a public relations person and party planner for famous people, and he actually went on tour with P-Diddy and his crew in October of 1997! Shaun says the best cities to visit were San Antonio, Texas and Detroit, Michigan. When I interviewed Mr. Bala, the first thing that I asked him was,” How do you make the pictures that you draw on the board?”He told me that he pictures the animals in his head. Like if it was an animal then he would picture it and when he looks at the paper or the board, in this case, he can see it so he does ghost images. Ghost images are when you do faint dots or like slashes. in the pictures. And he also said that his father chose hard pictures to draw. Mrs. Hunt is a new teacher at Eastview. She teaches 6th and 8th grade Family Consumer Science classes. Mrs. Hunt’s hobbies are swimming and painting. She absolutely adores being outside, and Mrs. Hunt likes just about any outdoor activity. Mrs. Hunt’s favorite place to spend her free time outdoors is near water, particularly dream place to go to is Ireland. Mrs. Hunt also loves animals, and she has a black Shih-poo puppy named Cali. So far, Mrs. Hunt thinks Eastview is a great place to be. She says that the teachers and students are a pleasure to work with. You can find her at Eastview 7th and 9th period in room 105, and you are welcome to stop by and meet her anytime. Please give Mrs. Hunt a warm welcome to Eastview! Mrs. Crawford is Back and Better Than Ever! By Kenric King Shaun shared with us a picture from one of his many cross-country tours. He says working with the students and staff at Highlands is ten times more rewarding than anything else he’s ever done. left the public relations field for a more stable job. He has a beautiful 8-year old daughter, and he is a big collector of sports cards. In addition, Shaun is a graduate of Highlands Middle School! We are thrilled to have him here at Highlands. Mrs. Crawford is a 6th grade math teacher. She left the school for five years from 2005 to 2010. During that time she had three boys. Her oldest son is Matthew, who is now nine years old. Then Mrs. Crawford came back, but then she left again to have her middle son Jake, who is now five. Then she was off having her third son Haden, who is now two. Now Mrs. Crawford is back teaching 6th grade. She used to teach a few periods of 7th and 8th grade and for the rest of the day she would teach 6th. Mrs. Crawford started teaching in 1997, and has been teaching for 13 years. Can you guess what subject has always been her favorite? You guessed it--Math is her favorite because she likes getting either a right or wrong answer. She teaches math because she likes to teach young people about what she loves. Many students, including Derrick Cosby say she is a wonderful teacher. Page 4 The courier Eastview Seventh Graders Experience a Taste of Colonial Life by Brent Skeete The 7th graders at Eastview Middle school celebrated Colonial Day on November 23, 2010. Colonial Day was started to give 7th graders a better appreciation and a more practical understanding of US colonial history. Students at Eastview spent Colonial Day learning about the day to day life of the colonists. Students created quilts similar to those that were made and used during colonial times. The same sort of patterns and colors were incorporated into the quilts. Students also baked special colonial cookies made of flour, eggs, nutmegs, butter and other ingredients used and produced in colonial days. Finally, the 7th graders enjoyed a flavor of the music used during colonial times through listening to a musical piece played by Ms. Linda Russell of the New York Council for the Humanities. She entertained the students with a folk song on her “English guitar”. All in all, Colonial Day at Eastview turned out to be fun and a great success. The celebration provided an excellent learning experience for all participants! The American Music Awards rocked the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 21st, 2010. There were so many amazing artists and performers I don’t know where to begin! First, here are a list of the artists and what category (or categories) they won (in no particular order): Lady Gaga – Favorite Female Artist (Pop or Rock Music) The Black Eyed Peas – Favorite Band, Duo, or Group (Pop or Rock Music) Justin Bieber – Favorite Album (My World 2.0; Pop or Rock Music); Favorite Male Artist (Pop or Rock Music); Artist of the Year; T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist of the Year Brad Paisley – Favorite Male Artist (Country Music) Taylor Swift – Favorite Female Artist (Country Music) Lady Antebellum – Favorite Band, Duo, or Group (Country Music) Carrie Underwood – Favorite Album (Play On; Country Music) Eminem – Favorite Male Artist (Rap/Hip-Hop Music); Favorite Album (Recovery; Rap/Hip-Hop Music) Usher – Favorite Male Artist (Soul/Rhythm & Blues Music); Favorite Album (Raymond v. Taylor Swift, Carlos Santana, Gavin Rossdale, New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys, Rihanna, Ne-Yo and DiddyDirty Money featuring Sean “Diddy” Combs, Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Bon Jovi, P!nk, Dear Tigress, I have been playing basketball since I was 5 years old and I really hate it. Problem is that my dad thinks I love it and he expects me to play for the school on the modified team. I would rather do other things. How do I break it to him without disappointing him? -Staying in the Game Dear Staying in the Game, The American Music Awards Rock the House! By Allison Jasne Dear Tigress... and Usher were among the spectacular performances of the night. Some special moments included Katy Perry singing her latest hit “Firework” with the first verse performed by a choir of young boys as she descended sitting on a “firework,” and Justin Bieber performing his latest hit “Pray” (although personally, it looked like he had a really bad stomachache because he kept crouching over). One rather strange one was Miley Cyrus performing a rather gloomy and subdued song dressed in very somber attire – she wore a dark black cloak with a hood, and was bathed in red and black light while her band behind her was completely dressed in black. The bizarre thing was she had walked the red carpet in a strapless, short, silver sequined dress! So, while the “Bieberheads” of America jumped for joy as he won all of the awards he was nominated for, the sane people watched in disgust, shook their heads, and silently hoped other artists would get those awards they deserved next year. What you honestly have to do is take control of your life. If you’re only playing basketball to please your dad, that isn’t good. First, you have to confront him – gently! Find a time and place where you and he have time to chat privately – trying to talk to him while he’s on the phone and trying to feed your infant sister isn’t going to work. Next, explain your reasons: you want to use the time more productively (like on your schoolwork), you’d rather play soccer (or another sport), and you generally would like a little extra “me” time on your schedule. Also, find out why he thinks you enjoy basketball: Do you lie to him about your feelings about playing basketball? Does he have a personal reason? Was he a basketball star only to have to quit because of injury? Does he want to see you carry on the legacy? REMEMBER: Listen and be open-minded. Stay firm and don’t chicken out. Be willing to compromise, and don’t let him threaten you or punish you for speaking your mind about your life. (BTW, try watching Jump In, a Disney movie about a teen confronting his father about his father’s ideas about his life and his own desires.) Grrr….. -Tigress The Tigress would like wish the entire WPMS community a happy and stressfree holiday season! Animal Lover’s Club Hosts a Unique Visitor By Daniella Oria and Elana Mariani The Animal Lover’s Club (ALC) is a club open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Ms. Pietsch is the advisor of the club. The ALC meets every other Monday from 2:45-4:15 in room 214. In the ALC you will do research and you will have the opportunity to learn about animals. Ms. Pietsch wants to guide the ALC for many reasons. One reason is that she has five cats and is a vegetarian, so obviously she loves animals. She wants each person to learn more about other animals, not just the common ones we see every day. For example, instead of learning about just cats or dogs, she wants her club members to know about exotic animals you don’t see every day. Ms. Pietsch’s favorite animal is the elephant because she says they are caring and smart.. As a kid, Ms. Pietsch loved Dalmatians (and still does!) At a recent meeting, the ALC held a unique visitor in attendance. The special visitor was a READ dog named Molly. Molly is a black lab and her job as a READ dog is to help children who have trouble reading, or have no one to read to. By listening to students read, she helps them build confidence and fluency. She is also known as a therapy dog. A very important message to all others: the AKC wants everyone to be kind to animals, because animals don’t have a voice to express their feelings. Animals have to be treated with the same care as you would treat a human. It’s not too late to join and help spread the word! The ALC is continuously collecting pet food and supplies. Anyone who can help donate anything would be great appreciated! Please drop off your donations to Mrs. Pietsch in room 214. International Club Serves up Lots of Diversity about different cultures. They learn about Puerto Sra. Patricia Wahl Rico, Mexico, Colombia, is a sixth grade Spanish Italy, Brazil, France and teacher. She came to the Dominican Republic Eastview on December through music, food, and 21st 2004. In 2005, she crafts. became the advisor for The food is Sra. the International Club. The International Club Wahl’s favorite part. The is exciting because students love cooking students get to learn and eating the food they by Kenric King make. Unfortunately, they don’t make dinners for the international club. They do perform every year at the International Dinner, though. The performance will be amazing so stay tuned for future details about this upcoming Eastview event! Molly is a black lab and her job as a READ dog is to help students build fluency by listening to them as they read aloud. Page 5 The courier Book Reviews Movie Review Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 By Danielle Herman Just recently, I had the opportunity to see the movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, and I absolutely LOVED it. This movie definitely did the book justice. The previous movie, Harry Potter and the HalfBlood Prince, didn’t go on the lines of the book, by J. K. Rowling, very much. Many important events and details were left out. To prevent any details from being left out, the seventh and newest movie was split into two parts. It was definitely a good decision, because very few details were left out. The movie had lots of action, magic, drama, and a little romance. After the death of Professor Dumbledore at the end of the previous film, Harry and his friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, decide to not return to Hogwarts for their seventh year. Before Dumbledore died, he left them a job to do. That job was to destroy Voldemort’s horcruxes, objects in which he can contain his soul. Once they destroy all of the horcruxes, they can destroy Voldemort himself. While they search for the horcruxes, Voldemort begins to grow more powerful. He takes over the Ministry of Magic, and later Hogwarts. Ron, Hermione, and Harry are now not only restlessly searching for horcruxes; they are on the run from the Ministry of Magic itself, which should be protecting them. As they continue to struggle to stay safe, jealousy builds among the group. An exciting feature of this movie was all the new and returning characters. One of the best was the long awaited reappearance of the house elf, Dobby, voiced by Toby Jones. He appeared in the second movie, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and was supposed to appear in the 4th, 5th, and 6th Harry Potter movies. But he was left out. Another character who was left out was Prime Minister Rufus Scrimgeour. He was supposed to make his first appearance in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but didn’t. He newly appeared in the latest film, portrayed by Bill Nighy. Other returning characters that weren’t in the last film include Griphook (Warwick Davis), Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody (Brendan Gleeson), Vernon Dursley (Richard Griffiths), Kingsley Shacklebolt (George Harris), Mr. Ollivander (John Hurt), Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs), Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton), Petunia Dursley (Fiona Shaw), Rita Skeeter (Miranda Richardson), Fleur Delacour (Clémence Poésy), Madam Maxime (Frances de la Tour), and Kreacher (voiced by Simon McBurney). There are also several new characters. Those include Xenophilius Lovegood (Rhys Ifans), Gellert Grindelwald (Jamie Campbell Bower), Mr. Granger (Ian Kelly), Mrs. Granger (Michelle Fairley), Charity Burbage (Carolyn Pickles), Yaxley (Peter Mullan), Pius Thicknesse (Guy Henry), Dolohov (Arben Bajrakteraj), Elphias Doge (David Ryall), Mundungus Fletcher (Andy Linden), Bill Weasley (Domhnall Gleeson), Auntie Muriel (Matyelok Gibbs), Albert Runcorn (David O’Hara), Reg Cattermole (Steffan Rhodri), Scabior (Nick Moran), Mafalda Hopkirk (Sophie Thompson), Mary Cattermole (Kate Fleetwood), Gregorovitcht (Rade Serbedzija), and Bathilda Bagshot (Hazel Douglas). Those who have read the books, this movie will not be a disappointment. For those who haven’t read the books, you’ll have to tell me. If you haven’t read the books or seen the movies, I would recommend doing so, because if you don’t you’ll be very confused when watching the movie. But either way, you’ll enjoy the fast-paced action, excitement, and magic. Ever had a passion for art? Do you love designing outfits? And also love to shop for clothes? Once again, Greg Heffley survives another Diary—I mean journal—no diary. Wait! I think it’s a journal. But it says “Diary” on the front, so it’s a diary, not a journal. The Ugly Truth has the same themes as the rest of the series. In the beginning of the story, Greg and his best friend Rowley Jefferson are now x-best friends because of something that happened over the summer. Greg is looking for a friend to hang out with, or as Rowley calls it, someone to PLAY with. Kinney introduces a few new characters in this book, mostly from Greg’s family. I think this book is hilarious! It made me laugh a lot. For example, Greg was the assistant flower boy for Manny, his little brother at his Uncle Gary’s wedding. Rodrick takes his picture, humiliating Greg. Greg always gets involved in weird situations like this, embarrassing himself. I suggest that you read it as soon as you can. And when I did read the book it had…………. wait a minute…I can’t tell you the rest of the story! You are going to have to read it and share your thoughts with others. If you get a chance, try it out. Because there are so many choices! You just need to pick something that suits your taste and is appetizing to you. Visiting this restaurant can be for casual dinners or special occasions, but it can get a little pricey. However, you get a lot for your money, which is a great thing! A Cheesecake Factory favorite is the avocado eggrolls with this amazing dipping sauce. They are mouth-watering and delicious and definitely worth recommending. The Cheesecake Factory Pictures in the Dark by Patricia McCord Reviewed by Ceara Gilmartin This book follows two sisters, Carlie and Sarah. Carlie is fifteen and Sarah is twelve. The girls live the typical American life in the 50’s; dad works while mom stays home and takes care of the children and cleans. However, this story has a twist—the the mom neglects the girls. Who does the cleaning? The children! Their father is afraid to say anything, and the girls don’t even dare say a word (they just ignore it). The mom suffers from a serious mental illness-- bipolar disorder. In 1950’s, people were not aware of this disorder so they just considered the person “upset”. Bipolar Disorder actually causes severe mood swings like the ones Carlie and Sarah’s mom experienced. Will they ever escape? Will they survive? Who knows? This book is for 7-8 graders. If you ever wanted to know where the Christmas tree came from, (or if you want to know where the big fat man in a red suit came from), you’ll find it here. The origin of Christmas came from the Christian Bible. The bible says that Jesus Christ was at midnight on December 25. The date probably came from the Roman holiday celebrating the birth of Mithras, the roman god of solders who was born on the same day. Romans were, at one point, Christians. They probably put the date as the day of Jesus’ birth due to the previous god having worshiped. Both Jewish people and Christian people believe that one day, a messiah, or savior, will come to lead the world to worship god. He got his image was gained from Thomas Nast, an American cartoonist who drew Santa in a Civil War camp handing out gifts to the soldiers and kids. Saint Nick was connected to Christmas probably through his popularity with the Churches. The tradition of giving gifts came from past holidays involving giving gifts. When the church grew, and Christmas became popular, people gave gifts on the holidays. The church was mad at this and tried to stop people from giving gifts. When they asked for a Christian justification, the justification leaned in favor of gifts. Yet, this was not the biggest save for gift giving. After Christmas went into a state of decline, Victorian England brought back the popularity. If they didn’t do this, Gift giving would have declined to not existing. And so we applaud the Victorian English. Happy H French: joyeuses fêtes Indonesian: senang liburan Christians believe that Jesus Christ was the messiah. The Jewish do not. The Christmas tree comes from a tradition in the Middle East, in which they would go to a forest, cut down an evergreen, and lug it home to decorate it. They chose the evergreen tree because it was a sign of hope and new life in spring, during the beginning of which, is barren. And through all this cold barrenness, the evergreen lived on. Evergreen boughs and mistletoe were used as decorations. Now, the Christmas tree is one of the most recognizable signs of Christianity today. Santa Claus came from the minor saint, Saint Nicholas. After a long series of events and rumors of miracles, his popularity jumped greatly, and then plummeted to a restriction of only Dutch, who called him Sinterklaas, the Dutch way of saying Saint Nicholas. When the Dutch went to current day New York City, they brought all their customs with them, and Sinterklaas was changed to Santa Clause, An Inside View: Chanukah By Allison Jasne Chanukah means “dedication” in Hebrew, and the story of Chanukah is a story of dedication and determination. Chanukah starts on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and lasts for 8 nights. On those 8 nights, Jewish families gather together, light the Chanukah candles, play the game of dreidel, and eat latkes and sufganot. Latkes are potato and onion “pancakes,” and are especially delicious with applesauce or sour cream. Sufganot are jelly-filled sugar donuts. Dreidel is a game played with a small “spinning top” with four of the Hebrew letters on them. They are especially delicious with applesauce or sour cream. Sufganot are jelly-filled sugar donuts. Dreidel is a game played with a small “spinning top” with four of the Hebrew letters on them. They are ( נnun), ( גgimel), ה (hey), and ( שshin). They stand for “Nes gadol haya sham,” or “A Great Miracle Happened There,” in Israel. In Israel, however, they say “Nes gadol haya po()פ,” or “A Great Miracle Happened Here”. The story of Chanukah begins in Israel thousands of years ago. Israel was ruled by the Syrian King Antiochus. He didn’t like the Jews because they refused to worship the Greek gods. He treated them harshly and cruelly. Finally, a Jew named Mattahias, or Mattisyahu, took his many sons and a band of Jews who wanted to escape the persecution. One of his sons was Judah Maccabeus. He led the revolt and battle against the Syrian army. Although the “Maccabees,” as they were called after their leader, were badly outnumbered, they managed to hold on for 3 years and ultimately won. This was the first miracle. When they reclaimed the Temple, they cleaned it thoroughly and found only enough oil to last for one day. However, when they lit it, it burned brightly for eight days, enough to make new oil! This was the second miracle. Today, families gather together, kindle the lights, eat the delicious food, and remember the valiance and miracles of the Festival of Lights. We are hard-core wall-ball players, and we play every day. The rules are if you throw the ball against the wall and someone catches it, the thrower is out. If you throw the ball against the wall and someone touches it and drops it, the person who tried to catch it has to run to the wall. If someone picks up the ball and throws it to the wall and it gets there before the runner, the runner is out. If the ball gets to the wall after the runner the runner is safe. Those are some of the basic rules of wall-ball. “My favorite part of Wall-Ball is that you get to have fun and anyone can play” says Steven Serna. There are a lot of fun parts about Wall-Ball, but players share the same idea about Wall-Ball—it’s simply fun to just go out during recess and have some fun. Modified Basketball By Luis Valenzuela Modified basketball is slamming into the hoops of Eastview and Highlands for another great year. This great sport (open for 7th and 8th graders only) has been coached by Guidance Counselor Mike Sally for many years. I interviewed Mr. Sally, and asked him what is different this season from last season. Salley says there are a lot of things that have changed this year. First thing is that there will only be one team this year instead of two, so doing this will cut some players if they try out. We also asked Mr. Salley what kind of training (drills) he uses. He said that one of the drills they use is the 20/20s, plus they also do a lot of running, conditioning and skill building drills. Finally, we asked him what things he was going to change (if any)this year when approaching his players. He said he is not going to change a thing, but one thing he is going to stress is teamwork, leadership skills, making sure that one kid is ready to step up for the team, one who is also ready to play and ready to take one for the team.
